I’m not sure if I’ve reblogged this before but here is is again as a) appreciation for food offerings and b) appreciation for other not-Athens-centric reconstructions and practices. Diversity and food are two of my favorite things, and @thegrapeandthefig has an amazing blog. And now I’m hungry.

While most of my Athenian-focused peeps are busy preparing the Theogamia, I'm celebrating the Posideia. The festival was attested on Thasos in the 4th century BC, but the details are otherwise unknown. For reconstruction purposes, I used the details given by this inscription (CGRN 199) from Delos - without going into painstaking details, Delos was once under Parian control and Thasos is religiously affiliated to Delos via its mother-city (Paros) -
I thankfully found a recipe that fit a great number of the ingredients listed in the inscription, so I rolled with that, only replacing the wheat with barley.

Aphrodite
Three-sided relief with a scene of weighing ("the Boston Throne"), Greek Classical Period, ca. 460 BC, marble, Dolomitic from the Greek island of Thasos, 82x161 cm
Museum of Fine Arts Boston Inv. 08.205
The most satisfying interpretation of the enigmatic scene on the front panel of this three-sided marble relief casts Aphrodite, on the left, in her role as a goddess of fate. Her son Eros, the winged figure at center, holds a scale, whose crossbar (now missing) was made separately, probably out of metal, and attached into three slots cut in the stone. The weights of the scale, visible on either side of Eros, are sculpted with two young men whose hands are bound above their heads. At the right, the sorrowful female is Demeter, goddess of grain, who is identified by a pomegranate, an emblem of agricultural fertility.  (MFA)
