Cora knew a few good diners around town. She had a fondness for any establishment that retained its retro decor- along with the atmosphere-, but she decided to go with Mickey's Dining Car, the last dining car in America. Its unique location, along with good classic fare with large portions were all wins in her book. A short drive after found the pair sitting in a plush red booth, looking over the menus. The prices were affordable- and the accompanying pictures gave her a good idea of what she was ordering.

She ordered some loaded fries, along with pancakes and sausages. A milkshake was definitely a given- though she blushed when she noticed the*two* straws when it arrived. "...Would you like to share my milkshake while waiting on your order?" She asked.

Eddie motioned for her to take the first sip. She obliged happily, sighing as the first sip of malty sweetness hit her tongue. She felt his eyes on her, but didn’t bother hiding her food-induced bliss.

Cora offered the glass to him, shamelessly paying him every bit of attention as he had her. The fluorescent lighting of the diner highlighted a few lines on his face she hadn’t noticed before. They did little to distract from his attractiveness. Her eyes were drawn to his lips as they wrapped around the straw. Her fingers brushed against her own lips absentmindedly, feeling the ghost of the kiss they’d last shared. That was a kiss that wouldn’t be forgotten for a while.

“I haven’t had one of these since high school,” he exclaimed with a fond smile.

“And when was that?” Cora quipped. She wasn’t expecting an actual answer, but a part of her wanted to know just how old he was. Or at least to dispel some of the mystery surrounding him.

He chuckled and looked away in what might have been a hint of embarrassment. Then his eyes flitted back to her, composure impeccable once more, to look her up and down.

“Probably before you were even born,” he said.

Cora laughed but said no more. He was gauging her reaction, and although she didn’t usually go for older guys, she figured there was no harm in testing the waters. Especially considering how well things were going so far.

“So you’ve a taste for the good old days I take it?” He looked to the interior decor of the diner, from the black and white pictures of 1960s Americana lining the walls to the shiny red vinyl cushioned booths.

“You can’t deny there’s a certain charm to it,” Cora said, taking in the atmosphere.

“No, I agree,” he added. “Life was perfect. Families stayed together and marriages lasted, the media was civilized, people were civilized.”

Cora paused. “I’m not sure if life is ever perfect, but the grass is always greener on the other side, right? Sometimes anything but the here and now is better…”

There was a silence that hung in the air around them. For a moment neither spoke, as if each lost in their own thoughts. Cora quickly brought herself out of it.

“I hope that wasn’t too much of a downer.” She took another sip of the milkshake.

“No, not at all. I appreciate women as introspective as you.”

There was something in the way he said it that made Cora question his sincerity, but she brushed it aside. Perhaps there was such a thing as being too cautious, even if she had good reason to be. Besides, things had been going well otherwise.

Par épisode, dans ma vie, je me suis sentie comme une serpillière.

Toute une partie de ma vie j’ai fuis des hommes. J’ai fuis un beau-père autoritariste, un copain violent, un coloc égoïste, un collègue oppressant sexuellement. Même en ma demeure, même dans mon bon droit, j’ai préféré partir. J’ai toujours eu peur des hommes, de leur bêtise, de leur capacité à aller toujours plus loin dans la connerie. J’ai eu peur de leurs violences, leurs insultes, leurs coups. Alors j’ai tout fait pour me faire oublier, je me suis faite toute petite, j’ai souri, j’ai été sage et polie et à chaque fois qu’il fallait se confronter à leurs bassesses, j’ai pris mes jambes à mon cou.

Jamais je n’ai porté mes droits fièrement comme un étendard et bien souvent ça m’a fait me sentir comme une serpillière, quelqu’un sur qui l’on marche et qui ne dit rien parce qu’elle pense que c’est dans son essence de serpillière d’être écrasée et de fermer sa gueule.  

Il y a quelques mois j’ai rencontré un homme, un vrai, un qui ne se contente pas d’être un être vivant, c’est un être humain avec le cœur et les valeurs. Un de ceux qui te donne espoir en la race humaine. Cet homme-là un jour m’a pris dans ses bras et il m’a dit que j’étais une femme merveilleuse, il a dit aussi « je sais que tu es forte et juste » ou quelque chose du genre. Quelque chose qui voulait dire « ne doute pas de ta valeur et de ton droit à exister ».

Ce soutien me donne envie d’être la femme et la féministe que je souhaite être. Car non ce texte n’est pas un message de plainte ou un message de haine. J’ai juste pris conscience que j’ai le droit et la loi de mon côté et que je peux m’en saisir comme d’une arme à chaque fois que la connerie s’incarnera dans un proprio vénal ou dans un voisin menaçant.  

Je n’ai plus envie de ramper, d’être la gentille serpillière qui fuit en souriant ; j’ai envie d’être une femme, un être humain.

Sous prétexte que nous sommes des femmes on nous menace, on nous terrorise, on nous malmène parce qu’on n’a pas toutes l’énergie d’être des guerrières, parce que nous préférons nous tourner vers ce qui nous fait du bien que vers la lutte mais au fond nous savons ce qui est juste, qui a raison et qui a tort…

Toute une partie de ma vie j’ai fuis des hommes pensant être une serpillière, aujourd’hui je sais que je n’en suis pas une et que les hommes qui nous font chier sont ceux sur qui on peut s’essuyer les pieds en toute quiétude en partant, la tête haute, portant à bout de bras l’étendard de nos droits.
