My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way has a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic with "anime inspired" art and a villain that goes back to the original '90s toys
By George Marston published June 24, 2024
Mikey Way is turning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' greatest love into their worst enemy

My Chemical Romance is one of the most popular bands of the last 20 years, and in the time since their last official release, several of the group's multi-talented members have branched into comic storytelling - including bassist Mikey Way, whose latest comic is a short in the upcoming anthology comic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, and Green #2.
A veritable teen idol of his own thanks to My Chem's beloved presence in the punk and emo scene, Way is tapping into a deep-seated love of both the TMNT and their personal favorite food of pizza for a story that captures the youthful energy of the Turtles in a way that only someone who was there for their meteoric rise and pop culture presence could.

"I was a massive Turtles fan as a kid! Being born in the '80s, wave one of Turtlemania hit when I was about eight years old, so safe to say I was all in," Way tells Newsarama. "My older brother was into the black & white comics early, so I was at least aware of the Turtles prior to that big boom, but my fandom really came alive with the original cartoon series."
"Followed up by the Playmates toy line and then into the live action movie, it really checked every box imaginable for me," Way explains. "The characters and the world building had something for almost everyone. While I was initially into Michelangelo, (because of his name and the nunchucks) I grew into way more of a Raphael fan. He's got more layers as a character in my opinion."

Way's brother is, of course, Gerard Way, singer of My Chemical Romance and founder of the DC imprint Young Animal, which published Mikey Way's first comic, Collapser, which was co-written by Shaun Simon with art by Ilias Kyriazis. For TMNT: Black, White, and Green, Way collaborated with artist Nikola Čižmešija and colorist Lee Loughridge, whose art you can see in the newly revealed pages from the story seen here.
"I love Nikola’s style so much!," Way says. "He has this fantastic anime inspired quality to his work, and it lends itself perfectly to a Ninja Turtles story. I was floored by his pencils and he was a pleasure to work with."
As for the content of the story itself, it all comes down to something that many fans of the TMNT probably love as much as the Turtles do themselves: pizza. Way brings in a classic villain, Pizza Face, who first appeared in the original TMNT toy line in 1990 as a villainous pizza chef, before being revived in the 2012 animated series as a mutated pizza blob.

"I wanted to do a story that was an ode to '80s horror, with a nod to Candy Man or the urban legend of Bloody Mary," Way says of why he chose Pizza Face.
"The character of Pizza Face fascinated me as a kid, because he looked like the mascot on most Pizza boxes mixed with a 'Freddy' or 'Jason'," Way continues. "That mythology I created in my head as a kid really stuck with me. When the opportunity arose to write a Ninja Turtle story, it was literally the first thing that popped out of my head."
And yes, Mikey Way does have a favorite pizza place:
"Star Tavern in Orange New Jersey. Hands down the greatest there is, in my opinion."

Though Way's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Green story is only eight pages, Way does plan more comics to come very soon - though he's not quite ready to say exactly what just yet.
"I feel like I have more stories that I want to tell," he hints. "At the risk of sounding vague, I would say one can expect an announcement of some sort very soon."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White, and Green #2 is on sale now.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE
The Black Parade is Dead!
At this point, MCR needs no introduction. The band led by Gerard Way is an icon of current punk-rock and every day thousands of fans around the world join their "carnival". The good news is that the quintet will release The Black Parade is Dead! this month and we will invite you to its launch!
BY: XABIERA SAN MIGUEL B.
When My Chemical Romance visited South America with their world tour last February and we learned that Chile and Argentina were included in the tour, we perfectly understood that thousands of fans would fulfill their dream of seeing their favorite band live, however, not all of them could attend the event, and for that reason, when we found out that the CD+DVD The Black Parade is Dead! would be arriving in record stores on July 5th, we got our act together and got ex-clusive tickets for the launch. Yes, just as you read it, we will invite you to the premiere of My Chemical's new material…, but first things first, you should first know what all the musical fuss is about.
Why not miss The Black Parade is Dead!
To begin with, this is the second live DVD in the career of the quintet from New Jersey, which began its history in the winter of 2001. The first was Life on the Murder Scene and was released in 2006.
The dual-format material includes completely live images and sounds, and compiles two concerts from The Black Parade World Tour, but they are two completely different concerts from each other.

As this is a limited and collectible edition, edited especially for fans, the material comes in a digipack (cardboard box with two compartments, one for each disc) and includes a booklet.

2005 mcr newsletter [email] about the founding of skeleton crew
"SKELETON CREW ONLINE
To whom it may concern,
Hello friends, this is Frank from My Chemical Romance. First of all, I would like to thank you all for helping my dreams come true. I cannot express my undying
gratitude for your support of this little band. You have made it possible for four kids from New Jersey and one from Chicago to make a difference in this world. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the depths of my polluted New Jersey heart, thank you.
Ok, so now that the mushy stuff is out of the way I wanted to tell you about something that's going on in my life. I am clogging up your inbox with junk mail to let you know that I have embarked on a new creative adventure. Over the past few years, I have met lots of extremely talented people… tons of them. The thing is, I have not only become friends with these people, but I have also become a huge fan of the art they create. When that happens, the next logical step is to figure out how to work with them in the best capacity. So I wanted to start a company or companies that would be able to showcase the talents of my friends, my heroes, and the people who inspire me to live each day of my life as if it were my last. What I came up with was Skeleton Crew (skeletoncrewonline.com). Skeleton Crew is a record label, book publisher, and clothing design company. I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well do it all. I have always had a passion for record collecting, especially rare releases. If I'm a fan of the band I have to have it all, it's a sickness really. So Skeleton Crew Records will put out limited edition releases, colored vinyl, picture discs, and things I would want as a record collector. Basically whatever the band wants to do, we will put out. Some of the bands you might have heard of, some of the bands you might not have. The one thing they will all have in common is that I like them, which means they are worth checking out. (I have wanted to start a record label of my own for years, I'm really excited.)
Skeleton Crew Publications will release books written or illustrated by musicians, artists, athletes, and just all around interesting people who have something to say. I want to create a different forum where art and ideas can be presented. With media some of these artists have not experimented with or explored yet. I think this division of Skeleton Crew is the most interesting, and the one to definitely keep your eye on. We will not censor any of the artists, they will have full reign over what they create. (Again the only thing the authors may have in common, is that I am a fan.)
Last, but not least, is Skeleton Crew Clothing. This is not a t-shirt company! I can type it again if you didn't read it the first time…this is not a t-shirt company. I have nothing against t-shirts, some of my best friends wear them, and I enjoy them as well. All I'm trying to say is that Skeleton Crew is a clothing design company; we are in the process of developing a fall/winter line that will involve more than just screen printed t-shirts. You will be able to wear nothing but Skeleton Crew products for weeks straight to any occasion or destination and never think twice about whether your uniform is comfortable, appropriate, or fashionable. The designs are rad, I must say so myself. There are teasers on the website for you right now, but we'll keep you in anticipation of the clothes for a little bit longer.
This is a business that has a greater good in mind, Skeleton Crew will donate a portion of all profits to different charitable organizations, decided upon by the artists we work with. I have a feeling you guys are gonna enjoy what we come up with; at least I hope you do. Skeleton Crew will have a booth on upcoming Warped Tour dates on the East coast. I will drop you guys a short email letting you know when exactly that will be.
Until then, go to the site, skeletoncrewonline.com, you can email us for additional information. So far it's been really fun and hard just developing this project, I can't wait to get things rolling and hear what you guys think. I created Skeleton Crew from my heart and with my friends so I hope you check it out. Thanks for reading, I'll see you at the show.
keep the faith - frank m.c.r. & s.c.."

Ok last adam post (lying) he smokes and is a fucking freak because he lived in New Jersey in 2004. What I'm saying is he definitely heard about american rock band My Chemical Romance and probably listened to their second studio album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge feat. your favorite tracks like Helena, I'm Not Okay, and Thanks for the Venom. If you read between the lines this means he listened to Guys like us in Prison and that song is about gay sex.
I just need to know if 9/11 happend in the saw universe.
Edit: yeah if Saw 1 didnt happen on September 10th, 2001 this would have been a great fucking post (thank you @dollcandyblog)

About Me ╰(*°▽°*)╯
Hello, my name is Paige, and I LOVE music. So much so that I decided to make a blog, and while I do plan on posting mostly music related things, I will also post a little about my life.
Enough about why I started this blog. I just know you guys are reading this to see if you want to follow me.
Here's the breakdown:
My favorite bands are My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Pierce The Veil, Panic! At the Disco, L.S. Dunes, and many more!

“Are you ready?” Gee asks as he stands in front of a mirror holding a flat makeup brush in one hand.
“You’re seriously asking me that?” I complain from the couch, looking at him in the mirror. I haven’t forgiven him for splitting up the band. I don’t think I ever will. My Chemical Romance saved me, it was my life, my reason to live, but he destroyed it. He killed it. Me.
“Baby, come here,” he waves me over gently and I get up, grudgingly. “I’m sorry I hurt you,” Gee cups my face gently. “You know I wasn’t coping, you know I was starting to get bad again.”
“I know that Gerard. I can’t be mad at you for ending the band, I know that, but I’m certainly allowed to be mad that it’s over. It’s easy for someone like you to write a new album and move on by yourself because you’re a singer. People like Mikey, Frank and I, we’re not you or Ray. We can’t just straight away find another opportunity. You gave us that opportunity, not many people are gonna give us another chance. But I’m happy for you Gee, I really am. This new album is gonna do great things.”
Gerard just stands there listening to me. He watches tentatively, paying attention to every word I say. I’ve just opened up in a way I wish I could take back. I want him to act like I didn’t say anything. I want us to just go back to being happy.
“You know I love you, right?” he asks, shocking me. My eyes go watery. I’m so tired of feeling like I’ve lost my entire world. “You’re going to find more work Lo, you’re going to find a group that appreciates your talents. And if you don’t then we’ll work on your music together,” he kisses my lips gently.
“I love you too Gee. I know you love me, I’m just tired. Forget I said anything, you know me, I just go off when I’m tired,” I sigh, closing my eyes.
“I know baby, I’ve known you since you were twelve,” he laughs. The sound of the crowd gets louder as Mark, Gee's manager comes into the room.
“You’ve got about 3 minutes Gerard,” he sticks his head in through the doorway.
“Thanks Mark,” he responds, “I’ve gotta head out now, sorry. I’ll see you after Lo, I love you,” he kisses my forehead, grabs his cellphone and rushes out the door, leaving me alone.
It’s different being backstage and not the one up there. It’s been about 2 years since I was on a stage, the feeling of adrenaline and excitement turning into loneliness and quiet. Gerard’s dressing room is the same size as the band’s used to be, except now instead of having four other people in it, it’s just him. He’s the star now. I flop down onto the couch and turn on the television, showing a live stream of the show.
“Lola?” I hear a voice come from the doorway, a familiar voice. Turning around I see a face I haven’t seen in months. Mikey. My best friend Mikey. Gee’s brother.
“You’re here? Mikey–wait what? Gee said you were busy?” I mumble in shock.
“I’m never too busy to see you Lola, you know that,” he walks into the room and shuts the door gently. He’s tall, taller than I remember, sitting next to me on the couch.
“I thought you were in Jersey, Gee said you were taking time off?” I question, looking over at him. He sits there, quieter than usual. He’s normally more energetic, excited to talk about the latest and greatest comic book he’s reading.
“I came to tell you something, I just couldn’t keep it in anymore, I had to come.” Now I’m worried. Mikey’s never like this.
“Mikey, you know you can tell me anything, you’re my best friend,” I sigh, glancing at the television as the outside screams get louder. Mikey grabs my hands softly, his fingertips calloused from playing bass. “You’re worrying me.”
“No, don’t be worried! Please,” he looks distraught, “I–it’s just hard to tell you this given… Gerard and I… and Frank… I–”
“Mikey spit it out!” I snap, overstimulated by the loud television, my own stress and Mikey sitting in front of me mumbling every three words.
“I–I, uh…” he sits forward and cups my jaw, linking his lips with mine. I gasp into the kiss which he takes to his advantage, pushing his tongue into my mouth. This is wrong. This is wrong. Gerard is out there preparing for one of the biggest moments in his career while his brother is making out with his fiancé in his dressing room. Mikey’s other hand grips my neck, gently pressing me forward.
“What the fuck?” a voice shouts from the corner slamming the door shut. Mikey pulls away quickly, faster than he pulled me in. It’s Frank. Fuck. “What the actual fucking hell are you two doing? Mikey Way I swear to god,” Frank grabs Mikey by the arm and forces him against the wall.
“Don’t hurt him Frank, please. Gerard will kill you if you hurt him,” I cry.
“Don’t try me Lola. You and I both know Gerard is going to die inside when I tell him you’re cheating on him,” Frank snaps.
“Mikey?” he walks in. The scene, a large dressing room. His ex-bandmate, holding his brother against a wall while his fiancée sits on the couch crying. “Get off of him!” he shouts trying desperately to pry Frank off of Mikey.
“You’ve got no fucking idea what these two have been up to Gerard. I walked in on these two with each others’ tongues down their throats,” Frank shouts back. Gee looks like he’s going to throw up. He looks like his whole world is falling apart and being burned to the ground.
“I–no. No Lola wouldn’t do that,” he looks at me, disappointed and broken.
“She didn’t,” Mikey says, “I kissed her. It was an accident.” An accident? Him kissing me was an accident?
“Bull fucking shit,” Frank pushes him further into the wall, earning him a wince from Mikey.
“Accident?” Gerard takes a minute to process what’s happening. I can tell he’s trying to decide whether he’s angry or disappointed or sad. “Go fuck yourself, are you serious right now? That’s the excuse you’re going to give me?” Bingo. He’s pissed as fuck. “You’re my fucking brother Mikey. I’ve given you everything from the day you were born. You’re my brother and you did this!” He shouts at his little brother, his entire body showing his anger. The only sign of his sadness are his hands, his index finger and thumb tapping each other desperately, an anxiety coping mechanism he uses often. “Get him out, get him out now! Security!” Gerard shouts as three tall men escort Mikey out of the room.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Frank says, running out quickly after Mikey.
Gee’s fingers continue to tap as he sits down on the floor, avoiding the couch.
“Did he really kiss you?” he rests his head in between his knees. After a show like this, he doesn’t need conflict in his life, it destroys a person like Gerard.
“Yes. He did. I didn’t like it, Gee.” I move to join him on the floor. He looks weak, his body shaking gently.
“I–I can’t believe he’d do something like this. I can’t believe you let this happen.”
“I didn’t let anything happen Gerard. You left, he came in and said he needed to tell me something and then he just grabbed me. I might be upset that the band broke up but I would never do anything to hurt you Gee. You’re the love of my life,” I sigh. He lifts his head, looking at me with a damp, red and puffy face.
“I love you Lola. I’m so sorry I hurt you. I’m sorry my brother did that to you. I’m sorry that I’ve ruined everything by breaking up the band,” he starts to weep, crying desperately.
“Oh no, no honey, don’t cry,” I wipe away his tears as he rests his head on my lap.
“I’m so tired, Lo. I just want to go to bed,” he continues to cry in my arms, exhausted from the last six months. “Can we go back to our hotel? I feel like shit.”
“Yeah, we can go Gee. I’m sorry the day ended like crap for us,” I sigh, getting up with him. Tomorrow will be a better day, I know it. He leads on my side, almost too tired to walk himself, eyes half closed.
“I need to kiss you Lola. I need you,” he stops in the middle of the hallway, looking like he’s about to collapse from exhaustion. I nod and we slip into another room where we can get some privacy. He grips my jaw in the same place as Mikey did, except Gee’s touch is more desperate and loving than his brother’s. Gerard stops an inch away from my lips, scanning my eyes desperately to tell if I really love him. He tucks a strand of my bright pink hair behind my ear before kissing my lips gently. We both know we’re going to grow old together, regardless of what happens in our future. We’re made for each other.
“You’re mine. You’ll always be mine. Mikey isn’t going to take that away from me,” he sighs, pulling away softly.
“I know that Gee. I know.”

Its 2002 and you are the drummer of the little band My Chemical Romance.
You are secretly dating Gerard and the rest of the band just thinks you and gerard are just good friends (since you’ve know him since like 9th grade)
Its 7:34am and you just woke up. Ray is making some coffee.
“Hey (Y/N), you ready for tonight’s concert?” Ray asks you.
“Yes!! I’m pumped!” You laugh.
“Sweet!” Ray says.
“I’m gonna go change out of these pajamas.” You say.
“Ok!” Ray says.
You walk into the backroom with the beds and stuff and open a drawer and grab jeans, black hoodie, and a korn shirt.
You look over and see gerard sleeping his bunk.
You walk over to him and rub his back. “Gee.. wake up.” You say softly.
He groans and wakes up. “Huh..?”
“Wake up gee.” You say.
“Oh, morning.” Gerard says, smiling at you.
“Come here.. i wanna cuddle you..” gerard says.
“Shh!! Remember we can’t let them know we are.. you know.. also ray is in the next room.” You whisper.
He groans. “Fine..”
Frank walk out of the bathroom. “Oh morning (Y/N).” Frank says.
You jump. “Oh! Hey.”
“What did i scare you?” frank smiles smugly.
“A little..” you roll your eyes.
“I should get changed.” You walk away from them.
You go in the bathroom and change.
~
It’s around 11:36am.
“Hey what should we get to eat?” Mikey says.
“Hmm.. i don’t know.” Gerard says.
“I saw a diner down the street, we should go there.” You say.
~
You guys get to the diner and walk in.
“Ahh, it’s warm in here.” Frank says.
You giggle.
“Fuck.. i hate Jersey winters.” Mikey says.
~
You guys are eating lunch in no time.
Gerard touches your shoe with his on purpose.
You glance at him wide eyed pissed a little.
Gerard just smirks and goes back to eating his food.
~
It’s about 5:36pm and you guys are driving to the venue to set up.
You guys park and hop out of the van.
“Lets unload this bitch!” Frank yells.
You giggle.
~
about a hour later you guys finish unloading and setting stuff up.
You start testing out your drums.
“Yo, (Y/N)! You gotta get your makeup on!!” Gerard yells.
“Oh shit! Right!!” You hop off your drum seat and run to the dressing room.
“Thanks for telling me, Gee..” you say out of breath.
“No problem.” Gerard says.
~
You guys start it off with Gee just speaking.
“Hi guys! We’re My Chemical Romance from New Jersey! I’m so excited playing with you guys!” Gerard says. “Alright! Lets start with our first song..”
You guys start with our lady of sorrows.
~
Its gotten up to song the last song on the record.
You look over and see frank rolling on the floor and jumping. You snort.
You focus on playing the drums. Until frank jumps and crashes into you. You hit your head pretty hard.
The only thing you hear before you pass out is “OH SHIT- (Y/N)!” From Gerard.
~
You wake up in a unfamiliar place.
“Gee! She’s awake!” You hear a voice that sounded like Frank’s say.
“Wha..?” You open your eyes and see Gerard.
“Hey.. how are you feeling (Y/N)..?” Gerard says softly.
“I-i’m fine.. wha.. what happened..?” You look over to a guilty frank.
“I- i jumped into you.. i’m so sorry (Y/N).” Frank says.
“Wheres Mikey and Ray..?” You ask Gerard.
“They are in the waiting room.. Mikey almost puked seeing you bleed everywhere.” Gerard giggles.
You giggle.
“How long have i been out?” You ask.
“Oh.. like.. 2 hours? Yeah 2.” Gerard says.
“Really! Oh my god!” You say.
Frank giggles.
“Also we got a hotel! So we can sleep comfortably and you don’t have to complain to be about your back hurting from the bunks!” Gerard says.
You laugh. “They do hurt my back!! I feel elderly when i wake up!” You say.
“Elderly?” Frank laughs.
“Yes! Like my back feels the same as your grandma’s!” You laugh.
The nurse walks in. “Hey you two- oh your awake (Y/N)! Yeah you just have a slight concussion but your fine if your going home with anyone.” She says.
“Oh i’m going to a hotel with those 4. We are touring around here so.” You say.
“Ah okay.” She says. “You’ll be free to leave let me just take out this stuff out of your arm..”
She takes the IVs out of your arm and you tense up from the pain.
“Alright! Your set!” She says.
You get up wobbling a little. Frank helps you stand up.
“You good?” Frank asks.
“Yeah.” You say.
You guys walk out to the waiting room to grab Mikey and Ray.
“Hey! She’s ready to go!” Gerard says.
“Oh hey (Y/N)! Are you okay..?” Ray says.
Mikey is sleeping on ray’s shoulder. He rubs his head to wake him up.
“Huh..?” Mikey mumbles.
“It’s time to go Mikey. (Y/N) is okay.” Ray whispers to mikey.
“Okay..” mikey puts on his glasses and gets up.
You guys leave the hospital and get in the van.
You lay your head on Gee’s shoulder and fall asleep.
~
“Hey.. (Y/N) we’re here at the hotel.” Gerard says.
“Okay..” you say.
You guys get out of the car and walk into the hotel.
“Hello!” Ray says to the lady at the table.
“Hello.” She says.
“I booked 6 rooms for us. Its under the name Ray.” Ray says.
“Okay..” the lady starts typing. “Yeah.. we only have 5 rooms open..” she says.
“Oh.” Ray says.
“That will be fine!” Ray says.
“So sorry that happened we got over booked a little..” she says.
“It’s fine..” Ray says. “Okay so.. we gotta share rooms by 2 people.. got it?”
You guys nod.
“Okay.. I’ll stay with Ray.” Mikey says.
“I’ll stay with Gee.” You say.
“I’ll stay with the tour manager.” Frank says.
“Sweet. Heres your guys’ cards.” Ray hands you guys’ the key cards.
You and Gerard get on the elevator to go to your guys’ room.
“Okay heres our room, Gee.” You say.
“Kay..” he says.
You unlock the room and walk in.
Gerard drops his bags and flops on the bed.
“C’mere..” Gerard puts out his arms.
“Hold on..” you say.
You undress from your bloody-ish clothes.
You climb into bed with Gerard and cuddle up to him.
“I love you (Y/N)..” Gerard Says.
“Love you too..” you say.

What are 5 things that make you happy? After you answer, pass the question to the last 10 people who reblogged your posts! Let's spread positivity!🌻
Thank you!!! ♥♥♥
Tom Hiddleston. We all know that was coming, huh? Well. Tom Hiddleston. Just in general. Every time a picture or gif of him crosses my dash or whenever he does something. It all brings me joy.
Running. I used to be really into it a few years ago, and then I hurt my back and whatnot. But I recently joined the YMCA because they have a running track upstairs and I've started my Couch to 5K program from the beginning again. I'm on Day 4 and I hope I'll be able to make it all the way to 5K again.
Eating. I love food. I love that all this money-sucking shit like DoorDash was invented because now I waste all my money on stuff like that. Oooh I want a burger? Well guess what? Now I can have one!!! I'm trying to be more normal about all this and cook my own food and stop wasting money but in the end it's just really nice to know I have such access to burgers and whatnot, you know?
Reading. In 2019 I started reading more. I think by 2022 this was a result of me watching a lot of BookTube. Which I'm sure many people may complain is stupid and repetitive etc but I personally find it a lot of fun. Some books I pick up from BookTube recs, some are just pulled from the tons of books that I've picked up from library sales over the years. I'll read a wide variety of genres, but my favorite is romance tbh
Music. I used to go to a ton of concerts and I haven't been to one in a long while, but they're so important. My current favorite band atm is My Chemical Romance. They were a favorite of mine back in 2004, then I stopped listening to them a lot, and then I got back on my bullshit, so here we are now, right down to the lyrics from Famous Last Words tattooed on my arm. Go hard or go home. (Plus they're from New Jersey so they get special ♥ from me. And Gerard Way is my soulmate, not in a I'm-so-attracted kinda way just in a way where I want to get together and smoke a cigarette and talk about 9/11 kind of way. It makes sense to me, leave me alone.)

Light:
That's certainly an interesting performance. Not that I really listen to any bands at all, so...I don't think I can provide a very correct opinion on music, so don't come flaming me or whatever.
I will add that MCR's lyrics to songs are also equally interesting, though, especially Thank You For the Venom.
L:
oouhh.. they're pretty neat. oddly helps me focus better. i like them. it's a shame they've gone inactive.
never listened to many mcr songs-- other than some music clips i've overheard throughout the years-- but i might look into them more if they're similar to this band. seems neat.

mcr's longtime agent
Matt Galle: "There were also a couple of local acts I was dealing with that I liked and was taking a chance on and I had SkateFest going on in, I want to say 2002. I was friends with a group called Thursday and they’d played the festival the year before. I used to promote their shows around the area. Geoff, the singer, said, ‘I just produced this band’s demo and they’re amazing. I’m putting them on my label. My agent doesn’t really like it and they need an agent to help them with touring. The band is called My Chemical Romance.’ So I talked to My Chemical Romance and told them, ‘I want to see you guys live. Can I put you on my festival?’ I put them on SkateFest the following year. Nobody knew them at all and they totally won over the crowd. I called them the following week and told them, ‘I really want to do this. You guys are amazing,’ and they took a chance on me.”

Galle: "What was it that connected? The sincerity and the message [My Chemical Romance] were sending across. They were hitting a lot of real topics and some of them were uncomfortable for people. They were going into areas that not a lot of other people were going. They were just dudes from New Jersey who didn’t give a shit about anything. They just wanted to play great music and spread their message. And people could tell – people could see they weren’t out to just grab a cheque. They never were."

After the interview we [Gerard Way and the interviewer] talk even more about Jersey, and I take a moment to thank him for his work, explaining that the band especially meant a lot to me. He's kind and gracious, talking about how the band's families all got together recently and how great it was.

My Chemical Romance’s first reunion show was a personally moving experience for Matt Galle, the band’s longtime agent. “It was very emotional to see them back. [...] You never knew if it was going to happen again or not.” [...] According to Galle, the first real discussion of a reunion tour happened in early summer 2019 at a meeting at Way’s Los Angeles home; the band had a specific vision for the return, one that didn’t include a comeback album or media blitz. “It was always a less-is-more thing – they just wanted to play the music for the fans,” says Galle.

The Eternal March of the Black Parade
Twenty years after their debut album and more than a decade after the critics dismissed them, My Chemical Romance stands as one of the greatest rock bands of the 21st century. How did we end up here?

My Chemical Romance is touring again, Paramore and Jimmy Eat World are headlining a major festival this fall, and there’s a skinny, tattooed white dude with a guitar dominating the charts. In case you haven’t heard, emo is back, baby! In honor of its return to prominence—plus the 20th anniversary of the first MCR album—The Ringer is following Emo Wendy’s lead and tapping into that nostalgia. Welcome to Emo Week, where we’ll explore the scene’s roots, its evolution to the modern-day Fifth Wave, and some of the ephemera around the genre. Grab your Telecasters and Manic Panic and join us in the Black Parade.
Our story starts in New York City on September 11, 2001. It just does. Suspend your disbelief; respect his audacity. But is it really so hard to believe, and is it really so audacious, that Gerard Way—then a 24-year-old New Jersey native, NYC art school graduate, and creatively stifled Cartoon Network intern—would choose that awful, vulnerable, crushingly human moment to reimagine himself as something immortal, someone superheroic? “That felt like the end of the world,” he told Newsweek in 2019. “It felt like the apocalypse. I was surrounded by hundreds of people on a dock on the Hudson River, and we watched the buildings go down, and there was this wave of human anguish that I’ve never felt before. Since then, I’ve continued to think about what we would do at the end of the world if we knew we only had a little time left.”
Standing on that dock, what Gerard decided he would do was channel his shock and grief and newfound sense of immediacy into the ultimate rock-star origin story. “Something just clicked in my head that morning,” he told Spin magazine in 2005. “I literally said to myself, ‘Fuck art. I’ve gotta get out of the basement. I’ve gotta see the world. I’ve gotta make a difference!’” So he hooked up with a drummer friend from high school named Matt Pelissier (the first of several drummers, alas) and wrote an anguished, furious, and yet startlingly tender pop-punk song called “Skylines and Turnstiles.” It starts like this.
You’re not in this alone Let me break this awkward silence Let me go, go on record Be the first to say I’m sorry Hear me out
Gerard sang and played guitar, though he struggled to do both at once. (It’s harder than it looks.) Slowly, he found other bandmates: Ray Toro and Frank Iero on guitars, plus his own younger brother Mikey Way on bass. Thanks to his gig working at Barnes & Noble, Mikey also contributed a band name: My Chemical Romance, an improvement on the title of an Irvine Welsh book. The band signed with a tiny label called Eyeball Records and released, on July 23, 2002, their debut album, called I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, produced by New Jersey punk deity and Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly, who’d already mastered the dark art of combining the rawest possible materials into something impossibly gargantuan.
This broken city sky Like butane on my skin Stolen from my eyes Hello angel, tell me Where are you? Tell me where we go from here
“Skylines and Turnstiles” is not, by a long shot, the highlight of MCR’s least-great album. The raw materials are there, of course: the scabrous and shimmering guitars, the breathless downhill-sprint propulsion, the throat-shredding screams to bolster the chorus and punctuate Gerard’s unguarded and brutal horror-flick lyricism. But your first song is never your best. Here, the one called “Honey, This Mirror Isn’t Big Enough for the Two of Us” is better. And the one called “Vampires Will Never Hurt You,” and the one called “Demolition Lovers,” and the one called “Drowning Lessons,” and even the one called “Cubicles.” But as an opening salvo, as the gritty first panel in a dense and ludicrously ambitious comic-book-punk saga, as an achingly sincere attempt to break the awkward silence and roll back the wave of human anguish, as a macabre but heartfelt attempt at genuine connection, Gerard Way’s first song got him where he needed to go, which was firmly on the road to leading everyone where they needed to go.
And after seeing what we saw Can we still reclaim our innocence? And if the world needs something better Let’s give them one more reason, now
It’s the rousing, heartbreaking vocal harmony on the words the world needs something better that shows you what Gerard and his vampiric cohort is really about. Look beyond the eyeliner, the hair dye, the ghostly pallor, the extra-macabre marching band outfits, the wholesale mall-goth hijacking of this band’s whole look, its whole ethos. Don’t flinch at the lyrics no matter how gnarly and nihilistic they seem to get; don’t get too wrapped up in the surreal sensationalism of their flames-and-chaos music videos. Buy the album tie-in comic book or don’t. Just never forget that the closer we get to the end of the world, the tighter Gerard Way means to hold us, to make however much time we have left just that much more bearable.
I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love just celebrated its 20th birthday, and inspired some very excellent anniversary pieces despite being, well, MCR’s least-great album. Their next record was a gleaming and snarling major-label-debut colossus that crowned the fellas as Warped Tour royalty; the record after that was a hilariously overblown rock-opera funeral march and consensus masterpiece that now stands among the greatest emo albums ever born, any era, any wave; the record after that is my personal favorite. Then MCR broke up in 2013, to appropriately operatic dismay, going out as close to On Top as a youngish rock band possibly can.
There was no explicit tabloid-roiling catalyst, no real drama, except no drama is not exactly this band’s vibe. Gerard’s farewell letter, posted to Twitter three days after the news broke and titled A Vigil, On Birds and Glass, is my personal favorite Rock Band Breakup Explanation Letter, any subgenre, any era, precisely because it captures this band’s precise and fantastic combination of galactically overwrought and unabashedly intimate.
We were spectacular. Every show I knew this, every show I felt it with or without external confirmation. There were some clunkers, sometimes our secondhand gear broke, sometimes I had no voice- we were still great. It is this belief that made us who we were, but also many other things, all of them vital- And all of the things that made us great were the very things that were going to end us- Fiction. Friction. Creation. Destruction. Opposition. Aggression. Ambition. Heart. Hate. Courage. Spite. Beauty. Desperation. LOVE. Fear. Glamour. Weakness. Hope. Fatalism.
And then he expands on the fatalism part as a way of explaining why, exactly, this band broke up after only 11 years and four albums.
That last one is very important. My Chemical Romance had, built within its core, a fail-safe. A doomsday device, should certain events occur or cease occurring, would detonate. I shared knowledge of this “flaw” within weeks of its inception. Personally, I embraced it because, again, it made us perfect. A perfect machine, beautiful, yet self aware of its system. Under directive to terminate before it becomes compromised. To protect the idea- at all costs. This probably sounds like something ripped from the pages of a four-color comic book, and that’s the point. No compromise. No surrender. No fucking shit. To me that’s rock and roll. And I believe in rock and roll.
He goes on at great length. It’s wild, it’s lovely, it’s absurd, it’s genuinely moving. The fellas found stuff to keep them busy post-breakup, and Gerard most prominently, of course: the solo album, the ongoing and relentlessly off-kilter Netflix series based on his comic book. And then, inevitably, MCR reunited—tentatively in late 2019, and full-throatedly here in 2022, headlining giant festivals and packing arenas as what certainly feels like the first rock-band reunion that anybody’s actually given a shit about in years. Put it this way: If you are a remotely young person who, like Way himself, still believes in rock and roll, My Chemical Romance is very likely why, and it’s worth ruminating on how, exactly, this profoundly strange and desperately necessary band has inspired such belief. Anybody who listened to I Brought You My Bullets in 2002 couldn’t have predicted any of this. But the guys who made it did.
Emo is back, baby! In honor of its return to prominence—plus the 20th anniversary of the first MCR album—we’re diving deep into all things emo.
Grab your Telecasters and Manic Panic and join us for Emo Week.
The most striking song on I Brought You My Bullets—the most Gerard song, the most MCR song, The Most in general—is called “Early Sunsets Over Monroeville.” It begins as a woozy but deceptively gentle waltz but darkens by ominous degrees, and soon Gerard is wailing the line “If I had the guts / To put this to your head,” and maybe you worry for a second that this is the 200,000th uncouth and unnervingly violent post-breakup emo song. And then you find out that Monroeville is in Pennsylvania, and parts of George Romero’s 1978 zombie-flick classic Dawn of the Dead were shot there, and oh, wow, suddenly you realize this is actually a very grim, very romantic song about an inconsolable man realizing he has to kill his no-longer-human wife:
And there’s no room in this hell There’s no room in the next And our memories defeat us And I’ll end this duress
Not the best song, but the most. My Chemical Romance would get truly dangerous, and truly great, when their best and their most intertwined. They signed to a major label; all the coolest kids do. Deal with it. Deal with this, while you’re at it.
“You like D&D, Audrey Hepburn, Fangoria, Harry Houdini, and croquet,” Ray Toro informs Gerard Way at the onset of “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” one of several monster singles from their 2004 Reprise Records debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. “You can’t swim, you can’t dance, and you don’t know karate. Face it: You’re never gonna make it.” Cue the high-school-outcast histrionics, the cuddly arena-punk viciousness, Gerard’s destabilizing magnetism as he practically screams in your face, the vintage airbrushed-van metalhead radness of Ray’s guitar solo, and, before the final bone-crushing chorus, a truly bonkers Gerard buildup/breakdown for the ages:
But you really need to listen to me Because I’m telling you the truth I mean this I’m okay (Trust me)
And, boom. There are days when this is the best song ever written. And there are other days when it’s not even the best song on Three Cheers: “Helena” has a majestic Mötley Crüe meets the Misfits chorus, the power chords ascending a stairway to hell, an infinite legion of demons pumping their fists along to every word: So long and good night / So long and good night. Or maybe the power-ballad pyrotechnics of “The Ghost of You” do it for you, the classic quiet-verse-loud-chorus dynamics, Gerard’s unapologetic controlled-screaming melodrama (“At the top of my lungs in my arms / SHE DIES”), the extra-luxe video that recreates D-Day down to the puking soldiers landing on the beach. Tell me these guys aren’t spectacular, and not driven by friction, ambition, LOVE, glamour, and fatalism.
By 2005 MCR are headlining the good ol’ Warped Tour alongside Fall Out Boy, and early-2000s third-wave emo—undaunted in its embrace of pop-punk, of the mall, of teenagers both actual and perpetual—has its very own Queen, and/or Led Zeppelin, and/or Pink Floyd. Suspend your disbelief; respect their audacity. “The main thing that we’ve always wanted to do was to save people’s lives,” Gerard informed the magazine Alternative Press in 2004. “That sounds Mother Teresa–ish and outlandish, but it really does happen. It does make a huge difference. We’ve seen it in action.”
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, by the way, is a semi-derailed concept album involving two lovers, a man and a woman, who both seemingly die in a gunfight: The man goes to hell, is informed by the Devil that the woman is still alive, and agrees to kill 1,000 evil men in exchange for the chance to reunite with her. I say semi-derailed because during the writing process Gerard and Mikey’s beloved grandmother died—“Helena” is about her—and Gerard considered scrapping the whole thing. “When that happened, I was like, ‘Fuck. Oh, God. How am I going to deal with this story? Does it even matter anymore? Is it just fucking pretentious? Is it bullshit?’” he told Alternative Press. “And then I came to grips with it and said, ‘Fuck it. I’m going to write the songs that I want.’” Even the song called “You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison” has a certain funereal poignancy to it.
Even for a band already operating at this scale in terms of both ungodly rock-star bombast and naked emotional intimacy—Gerard has gotten increasingly forthright in interviews about his struggles with mental health and substance misuse in this era—My Chemical Romance’s third and biggest and most extravagantly beloved album, 2006’s The Black Parade, struck like a thunderbolt from a clear blue sky. There is an awful lot to absorb here; the marching-band outfits are as good a place to start as any.
The Black Parade is a classic leveling-up record, the fairly conventional tale of a young, ferocious rock band hitting its commercial peak (the album debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard album chart, behind a Hannah Montana soundtrack) with the help of some new big-shot collaborators. It was produced by Rob Cavallo, who probably also produced your favorite Green Day album; the screaming-and-fire video for “Famous Last Words” was directed by Samuel Bayer, who also directed your favorite Nirvana video. (I’m just assuming your favorite Nirvana video is “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”) Several members of the band got severely injured while shooting this, by the way, and somehow you can just tell.
The Black Parade is also an unprecedented and not-at-all-conventional narrative flex credibly described by The New York Times as “a stricken tour de force about coming of age in the post-9/11 era.” It’s a not-at-all-derailed concept album about a man (“The Patient”) dying of cancer while wracked by fear and regret; Gerard decided to add to the verisimilitude by cutting his hair short and dying it a stark silver. (“I wanted to appear white and deathlike and gaunt and sick-looking,” he cheerfully told the NYT.) Liza Minnelli (“I love those guys”) drops by to portray a grieving mother; musically, the klezmer parts somehow hit harder than the heavy metal parts. Influences range from David Bowie to KISS to the Beatles; there is also, as the marching-band uniforms might suggest, a marching band. The scale of this, in every sense, is nearly overwhelming, so if you’re new to it all maybe start out by just putting the caustically hilarious goth-blues anthem “Teenagers” on repeat for six hours.
They said, “All teenagers scare the livin’ shit out of me” They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed So darken your clothes, or strike a violent pose Maybe they’ll leave you alone, but not me
Even five years ago, this record was an easy fan favorite but not necessarily an agreed-upon, era-defining masterwork. “The Black Parade, though well-reviewed at the time, hasn’t accrued the same reputation as other classic albums,” the critic Jeremy Gordon wrote in 2016 in a 10th-anniversary piece for Spin. “It was almost entirely ignored in lists of the best albums of the 00s run by tastemakers and canon-formers like Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Billboard, Paste, Complex, NME, and, yes, Spin.” By this record’s 20th anniversary, however, it might be universally hailed as the pop-punk Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: In 2020, when Rolling Stone unveiled its updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, there was The Black Parade at no. 361, not quite as good as Funkadelic’s One Nation Under a Groove, but just a little better than Luther Vandross’s Never Too Much.
You could argue that rock critics ruin everything. You could regard The Black Parade’s steady ascent on lists like this as proof that something essential—a life-affirming secret shared only between MCR and their Day One fans—is being lost. As a Late Pass–holder myself, out of respect/trepidation, I have decided not to argue that the band’s fourth and last album, 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, is actually their best album, even though I love it profoundly for both the reliable audacity of its concept (now MCR are Mad Max–esque rebels battling an evil corporation in postapocalyptic California, with the Gerard-penned comic book to prove it) and the chaotic scope of the songs themselves. Get acclimated by putting the song “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” on repeat this time.
Danger Days probably includes one too many songs that blatantly reach for Coldplay-style arena-rock uplifting grandeur, but what I will say is that this record’s final attempt at volcanic sentimentality, “The Kids From Yesterday,” totally works, and the album ends with an extra-caustic and extra-hilarious trashing punk tirade called “Vampire Money,” in which Gerard politely declines to contribute a song to the soundtrack of a Twilight movie.
(Come on!) When you wanna be a movie star (Come on!) Play the game and take the band real far (Come on!) Play it right and drive a Volvo car Pick a fight at an airport bar The kids don’t care if you’re alright, honey Pills don’t help, but it sure is funny Give me give me some of that vampire money, come on!
“Originally, what we did was take goth and put it with punk and turn it into something dangerous and sexy,” Gerard explained to the NME. “Back then nobody in the normal punk world was wearing black clothes and eyeliner. We did it because we had one mission: to polarize, to irritate, to contaminate. But then that image gets romanticized and then it gets commoditized.”
This is all delightfully but decidedly rude: There’s an excellent argument that the Twilight universe is every bit as vital and inclusive and life-affirming as any of the rock bands it attempted to romanticize and/or commoditize. But I will laugh at the line Pick a fight at an airport bar forever.
As for MCR’s breakup, and the failsafe doomsday device that triggered it, within a few years Gerard was opening up about it: In 2014 he told the NME that he’d relapsed into alcoholism after Danger Days, and worried that his daughter would grow up without a father; the choice, he concluded, was “Break the band or break me.”
The band first reunited for a single show in 2019 in Los Angeles: “That was definitely the most fun I’ve ever had playing on stage with My Chemical Romance, for sure,” Gerard told the NME, adding that “to me, the new version of My Chemical Romance and the way I want to go about it is exercising less control.” (The NME loves this guy.) The band’s festival-headliner status now is in part a reflection of pop-punk’s bizarrely ascending reputation in the past five years as both a commercial and critical proposition, from Olivia Rodrigo to Machine Gun Kelly to Juice WRLD. But however many sonic and stylistic precedents there might be, there has never been a rock band quite this courageous, spiteful, beautiful, desperate, glamorous, hopeful.
I believe Gerard when he says that this band’s original mission was “to polarize, to irritate, to contaminate,” but that was never their only mission. MCR was born in an apocalypse, and designed to help us all survive it. Us meaning actual teenagers, not critics, but we caught on eventually. We are all bandwagoners on the Black Parade now. Meanwhile, the apocalypse is closer than ever, but at least we can all huddle together in the glow.

💙Smoshblr December Asks Day 8💛
Who are your top 3 favourite bands/musicians?
And (once again) would ppl be able to guess it was you, just by being presented with these three musicians?
As someone who was personally victimized by their Spotify Wrapped this year, I am happy to set the record straight! In no order:
My Chemical Romance - American rock band from New Jersey; alt-rock, emo rock, pop-punk, post-hardcore, etc. This band carried me through my tumultuous teens and still comforts me in adulthood. Recommended songs to start with: To the End; Thank You for the Venom; Ghost of You; Famous Last Words; Boy Division
Joji - Japanese-American singer/rapper whose music mostly falls under lo-fi hip-hop, R&B, and indie pop. He makes songs that will either make you horny or start crying (or both). Recommended songs to start with: Sanctuary; Slow Dancing in the Dark; Your Man; Yukon (Interlude); Glimpse of Us
Stray Kids - K-pop group with hip-hop influences, though they also experiment with funk, rock, latin, and more. I started listening to them this year, and they've taken over my playlists. Recommended songs to start with: God's Menu; Back Door; Thunderous; Charmer; Venom
Honorable mentions: Blackpink, Gunship, Ashe, Blink 182, and Black Pumas (Black Pumas' first album, self-titled, is a no-skip album)
My friends would IMMEDIATELY guess that it was me; within my friend group, my music taste is pretty niche. I mostly find new stuff by going into a YouTube recommendations rabbit hole.
Thank you for asking!

here's the rough draft of the mcr vs lord huron compare/contrast essay i'm doing for a college class bc i can't be stopped
it's under the read more, also i'm tagging the people who said in the tags of my last post about this that they'd like to read it, thanks for encouraging my chaos. enjoy :)
There are many bands and musicians in the world. Because of this, there is bound to be some overlap and similarities between artists eventually. But while this is usually confined to artists of similar genres, occasionally there will be two bands from completely different scenes who are remarkably similar. My Chemical Romance and Lord Huron are two such bands. Quite popular within their own circles, but scarcely heard of beyond pop culture references outside of their fanbases, both have somehow filled the same oddly specific musical and cultural niche while never once interacting.
One similarity they share is their origins, specifically of their respective founders. My Chemical Romance was founded in 2001 by New Jersey native Gerard Way, and Lord Huron was founded nine years later in 2010 by the Michigan-born Ben Schneider. Both dabbled in music from a young age, and eventually moved on to be educated as visual artists, something both would use later in the creation of album art and supplemental media for their music. Eventually, both ended up following their dreams of creating bands, with Way creating My Chemical Romance in response to witnessing the 9/11 attacks and Schneider forming Lord Huron simply because it was something he felt he needed to do.
A major difference between the two is their genre of choice. My Chemical Romance is a star of the alternative rock scene, with their heavy instrumentals and dramatic vocals, and has a sound and aesthetic inspired by the works of bands such as Queen, Misfits, Black Flags, The Smiths, and Ramones (La Bella, 2008). Lord Huron brightly contrasts that, with their classic indie folk twang and layered acoustics influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Kate Bush (Orlando, 2022). The closest they ever come in music style is Lord Huron’s third studio album Vide Noir, a vivid departure from their previous folk sound for a heavier, distinctively eerie and distorted garage rock vibe.
Likely the most striking similarity for their fans, both bands are well-known for their extensively narrative-driven concept albums, something which by itself could warrant its own essay. Both bands use their music to tell stories, with each having a surface-level meaning along with a deeper purpose within the overarching plot of an album, as opaque and those plots can sometimes be. My Chemical Romance tells fairly explicit tales, with the doomed murderous duo in I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, the revenge-fueled mission to save a lost lover (likely the same from Bullets) in Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, a cancer patient’s life, death, and subsequent trip to Hell in The Black Parade, and the Killjoys’ resistance against Better Living Industries in Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys. Lord Huron, while having equally rich narratives, are much more vague with their storytelling. Lonesome Dreams tells of a man wandering the world alone, Strange Trails starts with a fast-paced and jaunty gang tale before diving into supernatural themes bordering on cryptid horror, Vide Noir is a bleak and psychotic search for a lost love influenced by drugs and cosmic horrors, and Long Lost seems to be the songs of radio ghosts who maybe don’t quite realize they’re ghosts. Both artists also have companion material for at least one album each, with the story of Danger Days continued through Way’s comic series Killjoys, and Lord Huron recently revealing the full story of Vide Noir with a feature-length film by the same name. Fans of both artists revel in analyzing every video, lyric, and promo piece for details on these stories, and it is the double meanings in their songs that keep many fans coming back for more.
Speaking of these double meanings, another major similarity the bands show is the themes often used in their songs. While their approaches may differ, both bands have one overarching theme that permeates most of their songs: death. My Chemical Romance approaches death from several angles: as a terrifying thing to fight against, and as something to ultimately be embraced. The best example of this is the narrative of The Black Parade, with almost the entire album beingdedicated to the experience and processing of death by the main character, known as the Patient. This is most apparent in the songs The End, Dead!, Cancer, and Famous Last Words. Lord Huron approaches this topic in a similar fashion, with death, as well as one’s memory fading and disappearing, cast as a somber inevitability. This is something the POV of a song is either avoiding (The Man Who Lives Forever, The Yawning Grave, Ancient Names (Parts I and II), and Not Dead Yet) or actively accepting and/or anticipating (The Ghost On The Shore, The Birds Are Singing At Night, Until The Night Turns, Way Out There, Wait By The River, and What Do It Mean). Schneider also adds a third angle, the horror of dying and coming back. This is explored most in the albums Strange Trails and Vide Noir, with songs like The World Ender, Meet Me In The Woods, The Balancer’s Eye, and Back From The Edge detailing what might happen if one dies and returns, for reasons of revenge, rejection by the powers that be, or maybe no reason at all. Another facet of death that both bands explore is death or disappearance of a loved one, with songs like My Chemical Romance’s Helena, The Ghost Of You, and Welcome To The Black Parade, and Lord Huron’s In The Wind, The Night We Met, and Drops In The Lake. In total, both bands have the topic of death covered on almost all fronts possible.
Despite the differences in their genres, influences, presences, and even statuses (with Lord Huron currently still a band and My Chemical Romance only becoming active again recently after an almost ten-year breakup), these two groups share a truly remarkable number of similarities in both their origins and approaches to writing songs and albums. Both explore similar topics, albeit in different ways, and use their chosen medium to process similar themes and bring their stories to audiences that can resonate with them. There is a non-negligible overlap of people who would consider themselves fans of both bands, which, though surprising at first, becomes less shocking when these similarities are weighed against their differences.

Part 1 from a leathermouth interview on Jerseybeat.com february 11th 2009

part 2, part 3, part 4
Almost five years in the making, LeATHERMØUTH is a straight-up hardcore band born and raised somewhere in New Jersey (or possibly Europe.) The group’s hard-hitting first album XØ (released through Epitaph Records) has received respectable reviews (and a couple of bitter comparisons to Motorhead.) [Read Rich Quinlan’s review here.] This is a project that no one seems to know quite what to make of, which naturally intrigues us. Besides the name recognition of frontman Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, it also features one of my favorite new guitar players, Rob Hughes, and a touring lineup to die for. So we asked Frank to spare a moment or two from an L.A. recording session for the next MCR album, which he was nice enough to do (eventually.)
Q: Hey Frank, it’s Deb from Jersey Beat, how are you? F: Hey Deb, I gotta tell you: I really want to thank you; I know it’s been hell getting in touch with me for this interview.
Q: No, it’s all right, I appreciate that you’re in the studio and I guess there was a communication issue, so it’s fine. I appreciate your time, too – you’re taking time out of what you’re doing. F: No absolutely. That’s the thing; we just got here a couple of days ago, and we’re just getting a feel yet of what the record is going to be like, and stuff like that, so it’s really just fleshing out like a couple of songs here and there. I’m really getting into the stride now, so… Q: I checked; it’s exactly the same temperature this week in Los Angeles as it is in New York City – good plan, there! F: Yeah, every time we’re in Los Angeles, the weather is always horrible, so it’s not weird for us when we get here. It actually just today lightened up – it’s very nice today. Q: Oh, that’s a good thing! It’s not nice here. F: Yeah the thing is we really spend our days just locked in the studio, so I haven’t really been outside that much. Q: Oh, some palm trees, whatever…! F: Yeah, I haven’t even been out of the room. Q: Yeah, well that’s a good thing, actually, being locked up and recording is certainly better than being outside and standing in the windy weather. Okay, so this LeATHERMØUTH project took five years to come to fruition - how different is the finished product from what you started out with? F: Insanely different! When we first started, the only recordings we really had were just from a practice studio in Jersey and then…well I guess maybe it’s not that different because now it’s just a live version of us playing in my basement (we both laugh.) We actually had time to craft the songs - a lot of that was done when I would come off the road for a week or two here and there. We’d be like “Oh, let’s try this one a little bit different.” I had the recordings for a while without lyrics and vocals – I would just sit on it while touring, and when I would finally come home, that’s when I’d record in my basement. Q: You had two songs at the time, correct? F: Yeah, we started with the two that were live recordings from the rehearsal studio, and we called it “Live In Spain.” It was “Murder Was the Case They Gave Me” and - at that time it was called “What’s a Pulse Got Ta Do With it?” - which ended up being “Bodysnatchers 4Ever.” Q: Right, I remember when it was called that, actually. That’s not at all confusing, right? “Oh, it’s a completely different song!” F: (laughing) I didn’t want to steal too many titles! I didn’t want to keep that going. Q: Right! (laughing) Well, I know that you've stated that this is the first project where you've actually been responsible for all of the lyrics, but you've done a few here and there for other projects, right? F: Yeah, you know, mostly ideas and stuff like that – I mean never like full verses or whole songs by any means. It was maybe a line here or there or just an idea. Q: Mm hm. Does this sole responsibility change what you feel you are able to say?
F: Well…I don’t know if it would if I knew that the record was going to come out. See, originally, I thought I was just going to do it anonymously, so when writing for that, I didn’t care too much. I think for the next record, when everyone will know already, it may. I don’t really know, but that’s yet to be seen - I hope not, though. I’d like LeATHERMØUTH to just be what it is, and just promote people – and I think to promote people, you need to just be uncensored.
Q: Oh, I agree – I don’t think there would be much logic to a hardcore band that’s censored.
F: No, I mean like censoring your thoughts or the different things that you would talk about.
Q: Mm hm – I don’t think any artist should have to do that, actually. That’s kinda not the point of living in this country – I’m so against censorship. This is the first project where you've not contributed instrumentally, right? Is that a weird shift to make for you as a guitar player?
F: Yeah, but I think it helped me vocally, because I definitely did things I wouldn’t normally have thought of, you know? Taking such a step back from that, it kept me in an open mind.
Q: Fair enough. Everyone gets asked about the song or band that made them want to play - do you have one that made you completely reconsider the business?
F: No…even the rough spots, when you see things that make you want to give everything up, you kinda take a step back and realize that’s not why you’re doing it. You’d like to think that you would be in a band even if there were no other bands out there, or any kind of music - like you would be creating even if you were just drumming on a rock. That’s the thing; I think it’s just a necessity that I have. I have to play music, I have to create or write just to stay sane – so other people’s actions really can’t dictate how I feel towards that.
Q: That’s a great answer, actually.
