AHHHH I am SO excited to share this bind—but first, I want to say thank you to Soph for letting me make (my first ever) author copies for this story. I'm definitely a beginner bookbinder but I truly hope I've done this fic justice <3

The design process for this bind was probably one of my favorite parts. I decided to go with some really simple design elements in comparison to my other binds, primarily because I felt it was more fitting for the story, and I was inspired by some of the design choices made in my personal copy of Song of Achilles.

Some elements of this bind were entirely new to me, such as the fact that it was an in-boards three piece bradel binding. It was also my first time painting edges, as well as rounding spines. Neither of these things turned out perfect, even after completing personal copies, but i did learn a lot of don't's.

One of the things that I did in the process of this bind that I LOVED was combining two different decoration styles. I've done covers that are either completely foiled, or completely HTV—but not both. For this cover design, I was struggling to figure out the best way to make the upside-down antlers on the cover pop. Adding HTV over a full foil cover was the perfect way to get the look I wanted:

this is meant as no hate to you but i hate what tiktok has done to the marauders fandom.

im sure youre nice enough cuz you wouldnt have the followers if you werent but tiktok just radicalized the whole fandom. suddenly theyre all gay or trans and their all changed and characters that shouldnt be appreciated are loved. when did we start liking barty?!? its insane

it completely ruins the writers who now feel as though they have to push out trending content to fit whatever tiktok is hyping up at the moment and people on tiktok dont ask for permission before talking about fics...yet complain when people do binds? again no hate to you but i do worry about how authors like messermoon feel when their fics are spoken about constantly by people they dont know or how authors feel having to put jegulus into fics just so people read it because tiktok has decided theyre not problematic bc they can make them hot

and dont get me started on the arguments there. i can leave a harmless comment about preferring one ship over and i get lectured about fandom etiquette when all i did was remind people that some ships are insane and canon is there for a reason.

and its always people getting big that...shouldnt. again im sure youre nice enough but 10.9k feels so unfair when youre just a fan like the rest of us if you get me

Below, I will discuss the process, which will include a lot of spoilers. (But also more pics 😈)

When I heard this story was set in the same universe as choices, I lost my shit a little and read it. Slowly, however, this story began to mean a lot more to me than I could put into words. George's grief over the lost of his soul mate, the struggle to find himself, and Blaise's love, passion, kindness, and confidence in himself resonated to me in such a way that I knew I needed to hold it in my greedy little hands.

I started to think about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to bind this story. I struggle a lot from picking the font for the body text to picking the chapter titles. I finally, after fucking around with canva for more time than I'm willing to admit , I was able to come up with these:

In the story, there is this moment where Blaise casts a spell that creates a constellation, of which George got the inspiration to make a mood ring that created a little sky, and depending on your mood the sky changes to reflect how you feel. He gives it to Blaise, and they have a picnic under the sky, indoors, later at Blaise's party they have such a cute moment at night and so I wanted to implant the sky in some way.

I also wanted to use constellations in this bind. I didn't know how or where. I just knew I needed them in my life. So while i mop over my inability to impelent them, I took a break. So one day, I was reading a book with these very cute corners, and then it hit me. (No, I didn't finish the book i was reading. I was busy stalking the internet, trying to find the perfect image)

After that, picking the page breaks was easy. I wanted something simple since I didn't want the typeset to look so busy that it took away from the most important element of the bind, aka the story. I added a few little things for me in Draco and Harry's 2 chapters because I'm weak, and that's for soph to find all on her own 👀

I will put this here, tho.

Lastly, because Tumblr won't let me post more pictures, here are the endpapers I used for 2 of the 3 books.

As some of you may have notice, there are blues, pinks, and whites in this bind. It's a subtle yet very loud depiction of the Trans flag. It was very important to me to show that this story is of a Trans man that, as soph, puts it, saved himself.

I added all the chapter notes, trigger warnings, and more information about this bind on the typeset itself. Ultimately, to me, this is a form of archiving stories I think matter, and if for whatever reason, technology dies on us, this story will still live on.

Htv: I used siser's htv easy weed vinyl with a bit of a pinkish undertone to it.

Endpapers: they are from paper tree nook in the uk

Textblock: I used standard 20lbs cream color paper. I used toner to print. To sew the textblock, I use blue linen thread and remie bands gifted to me by my friend duranbinding. I painted the edges using golden acrylic paint, and the charm and ribbon are both from Michael's

An ode to fanfic writers.

Regulus Black has saved my life.

A character that has not more that three lines in cannon has become my saving grace. When I became completely indifferent for the outside world and couldn’t find a reason to wake up everyday he was the only reason I tried. I’m not saying it’s healthy or a healthy coping mechanisms but he was the only reason.

I thank every day to the generous fanfic writers that gave me a reason to keep living (honorary mention to MesserMoon, MsKingBean89, Solmussa, chazzledazzlethem, wrongcaitlyn, zeppazariel, lumosinlove) for giving me a reason to keep going. To force my soul to appreciate life in a way I was unable to do for myself at the moment. I wish every fanfic writer knows how much love I have for them, for the simple act act of sharing their most true self.

I try to comment in every fanfic I read full of appreciation for your work but if it was untouched, even if I haven’t have pleasure I reading your work, THAK YOU, in name of every person’s life you’ve touched.

so in honor of zeppazariel/bizzarestars re-uploading their works to ao3, i figured that i’d make a list of fanfictions that are essential to the jegulus fan-canon. of course, zar’s works are a huge part of our fandom, and i hope that I’m honoring that with this list. i will add fics to this list if you have any you’d like to see featured.

Crimson Rivers by bizarrestars (E, 865k) - Regulus Black was fifteen the first time his name was called at a reaping. He's twenty-five when it happens to him again. A lot has changed in that time, and one of them is that he's ready to do whatever it takes to make it home. Nothing or no one will stop him, not even James Potter.

James Potter has no plans to stop Regulus Black from making it home. In fact, his plans revolve around the opposite. He has his reasons, but he's made his choice to get Regulus out of the arena, even knowing it'll be the last thing he ever does.

Sirius Black was sixteen when he volunteered to take his little brother's place in the arena. At twenty-six, without the option to do it again, he has no choice but to be a mentor to his brother and best friend, knowing that only one of them can make it back out.

Two names called, a mentor on the verge of falling apart, and more secrets and grief between all of them than they know how to handle. None of them are prepared for what comes next, or how far they'll go to make it through.

just lovers (like we were supposed to be) by bizarrestars (M, 321k) - Or, the one in which James Potter wants to prove he'd be a good boyfriend to Lily Evans and comes up with the brilliant plan to fake date Regulus Black his way into falling in love. It doesn't quite go as anyone expects.

Task failed...successfully?

Best Friend's Brother by bizarrestars (M, 329k) - Regulus hates his brother—this is fact—and as his best friend, Remus would never betray him by falling in love with aforementioned brother.

Sirius hates his entire family—this is also fact—and as his best friend, James would never betray him by falling in love with a member of it.

The problem is, none of them are even aware that it's happening.

Only the Brave by Solmussa (E, 646k) - Regulus Black is angry. He wants revenge. He wants to watch the world burn for all it's done to him. He also wants to make out with James Potter, but that's a secret he'll take to the grave. Vengeance is more important than... whatever it is that chokes him when he lays eyes on Potter.

James Potter is confused, because Regulus Black is, all of a sudden, hot. And it's unfair because Sirius is going to kill him if he doesn't get his impulse control in line.

Meetings That Start In The Dark by writingamarie (E, 656k) - Regulus is concerned about Sirius after their mother orchestrates a horrible attack. And with Sirius out of reach he relies on James Potter to know his brother is okay. Except their meetings keep happening, and their conversations keep falling away from Sirius. Falling for James Potter might just be the most reckless thing he's ever contemplated.

I am still kinda procrastinating "Choices" (you may know this by now, I'm severely heartbroken) (or maybe I'm just not strong enough, who knows) (but I managed to read 2 whole chapters!), so I'm reading other stuff to distract myself. Today I want to talk to you about "Kill Your Darlings" by MesserMoon (@sophsicle) (just because you broke my heart does not mean that I don't absolutely adore your writing style!)

Okay where was I? Right. KYD. (303k)

It's a muggle AU where Regulus starts going to college with his brother who was drafted by a Hockey team to be a professional player some time before (I'm not sure about the age difference actually). Regulus on the other hand is studying economics or business or something and had to quit Hockey after Sirius left. What I really loved about this story is the intense discussion about mental health and how we have to look after ourselves. Also Regulus is hands down so fucking funny. I loved him before but I think I love him a little more now (if that is even possible). Also, Remus has a hearing disability and I have to say, I love it. How they "simply" sign and include him in their convos, it's so subtle but still lovingly implemented. As someone who also had a hearing disability (still do to a certain extent) I felt really seen and all warm and fuzzy. Thanks for that, honestly!

Soooo: BIG rec you peeps. If you like muggle AUs and sports fics (you don't have to know anything about hockey, I promise. I didn't know anything but MesserMoon explained everything at the beginning of the chapters! Loved that so much btw) this is for you! Also for me it was a comfort read (I mean, so many things are when you compare stuff with Choices). Still, this story deals with A LOT! So please read the tws and be careful.

I could say so many more things about this story but it always results in one final thing: Go read it, it's soo good!

so I was just rereading choices by messermoon because I was in the mood for a good cry (my maths final helped in achieving that)

and I was listening to homage by mild high club and you know the two lines that go - someone wrote this song before, and I could tell you where it's from - so basically my idea was James charming Lily's books to fly all around her and her being like you're ridiculous and James being like don't complain you love that tho

and then James suddenly getting deja vu because one night he'd nicked a snitch and brought it to the astronomy tower to show Regulus and Regulus was like you're ridiculous and James responding in the exact same way

I don't think anything like this exactly happened in choices but it's extremely heavily inspired by that (James did in fact nick a snitch to show to Regulus once) and homage too

Hi! I recently read Here’s Looking At You Kid by MesserMoon and loved it. It was a rarepair I’ve never heard of (George/Blaise), and I wanted to ask: do you have any fav fics featuring rarepairs that are practically unknown/no one talks about them? Thank you!

Hi anon! I’ve heard great things about this fic, was even thinking about reading it on my trip but I ended up taking a break from fandom too 🤣 I’m a bit hesitant to declare this or that ship as popular/non-popular bc perception is often deceiving - my Tumblr bubble talks a lot about some rare pairs that are not necessarily popular on AO3 (like Harry/Teddy, here’s a specific list if anyone’s interested) while other ships are not as popular here but have over 1k fics (like Harry/Pansy). In the end I didn’t want to overthink this so I just went for my favorite fics — there are quite a few het ships and they are not generally long; I like my rare pairs short & smutty like the doctor ordered 👍🏼 lastly, I wanna mention two authors who write a variety of excellent rare pairs: pauraque and AU champion provocative_envy. You can’t go wrong with any of their fics!
