My brain is, rather than planning for next steps on any of my active projects, insisting on planning out a hypothetical spider-person costume that I will almost certainly never make. I'm gonna tell y'all about it so the idea can hopefully leave me be

(this isn't inspired by reading Insect/Moth!Jon TMA fics no not at all)

So! The character I'm building is mostly person-shaped, but has 2 extra pairs of arms. Ideally for the costume, these would be posable and have posable silicone hands on the end for the photos I have in mind.

This character would be wearing a 6-armed knit/crochet sweater, which I am of course now trying to figure out how to make in my head. I have several ideas for sweater designs, but a web-patterned yoke sweater would be really neat I think. If I could get little spider/web/bug details on most of the outfit pieces, that'd be ideal.

The image I have in mind is sitting in a chair or standing crocheting a round blanket with my actual arms, the second pair of arms supporting the rest of the blanket and keeping it lined up, and the third pair has one arm holding my project bag, and the other is searching in a pocket of the bag or holding up my phone with the pattern.

Okay so reddit mods are mean as fuck but what's new (why yes I did know that my reform conversion doesn't count in Orthodox spaces but I still consider that education and journey worthwhile, fuck you)

Anyways I emailed the MO rabbi to ask the set up a meeting to discuss MO community standards and theology more in depth and try to figure out if that's the right path for me. I haven't been to services of any kind in too long but I'm planning on going to the MO shul this Friday so hopefully that quenches some spiritual thirst

Holy shit I love your Dirk interpretations, it's so true and I could talk about this shit forever. I feel like another part of his character that people seem to forget (along with Roxy for some reason) is that he's from the future in solitude in an apocalyptic wasteland. I just see that part of his character always removed which is disappointing because I feel like that's a pretty big part, especially regarding his themes around technology, his brother's theme of Time, his own isolation, and how he plays in the vastness of the universe and spacetime.

But absolutely. I certainly understand where the lack of discussion over his isolation + upbringing comes from, considering a majority of the fanbase that I have seen builds their ideas based on their own version of postcanon. I’m not entirely sure how that would be fixed, but certainly even in the somewhat recent past I would see a lot more content regarding his upbringing both literally and symbolically. I don’t have much to add regarding the things you’ve mentioned, because they just are what they are. Dirk being confined to a singular room left to him by a father figure he never met, in a future where the only other person left on the planet is someone he cannot pursue a relationship of because of himself, with purely 3 robots to keep him companion, one being an exact replica of his own brain who is *also* trapped inside a pair of glasses, is about as literal as it gets to me.

The contrast to me involving the flooded, organic world in comparison to the little speckle of Dirk’s apartment packed with the dude and his technics is not only a representation of his isolation and entrapment within himself, but also of his lack of control. I think his obsession with & themes of control are a direct product in the case of Dirk specifically *of* this kind of upbringing. His themes of technology are also related to his themes around control. So much of his character is actually revolved around this to me like so much. Dirk is so deeply disconnected from humanity in every way and so much of his character + symbolism is based around that.

It doesn’t even have to be about the symbolism or anything though. It’s just pretty *interesting* in the literal sense that he lives in the middle of the ocean in the future. There’s not only a lot to theorise on to do with his young life there, but on how it might affect him in the way he acts for the rest of his life. The latter part is probably what I see mentioned the most by people talking about Dirk regarding this, I’m surprised I don’t see more discussion on the former too though. I really ought to actually talk more about Homestuck stuff on here. I will do it myself.

Roxy & Dirk’s relationship is largely ignored though because there is a narrative a certain demographic spreads that Dirk resented and blamed Roxy for her interest in him, and thus too many people believe that their relationship was or would continue to be an abusive one. Realistically, I believe it’s important to acknowledge that the way Roxy treated Dirk regarding his homosexuality wasn’t right while still acknowledging the obvious amount of respect and admiration Dirk had for Roxy. I mean we have a huge piece of dialogue from their post trickster mode conversations on the quest beds from Dirk purely stating how he feels about Roxy that people completely ignore somehow. I think this usually happens to characters that are women though. I know everyone says it, but it is true. Jane gets the exact same treatment of boiling her down to solely her negative aspects. The things I see completely mischaracterising both of them are horrific.

I mean how much more explicit can it get that their relationship is obviously very important to Dirk? But I digress. I think the best or I should say “most interesting” interpretations of their relationship usually come from DirkRoxy shippers actually.

I would be interested to hear about Dirk’s relation to his brother’s theme of time though. I don’t have any thoughts on this and I don’t recall ever hearing anyone talk about it before. If you or anyone else would be willing to enlighten me I’d be thrilled.

omg anon i was legit about to post my attempt at drawing cogged Sunstreaker...your timing is impeccable

but yea here's my attempt at designing him!! I'm very proud of the helm design, but the chassis....not so much lol. I'll probably replace the window for something more "cybertronian-like", but er (as you can see) I put waaay more thought into his helm ahaha

I wanted to make sure it still reads as a design evolution of his cogless design while still retaining his iconic features (his earfins!!), and most importantly, that it complements SIdeswipe's design as well.

I definitely want to keep the iconic black square/trapezium on the top of his chassis as an homage to his original toy and G1 design, but everything else about his chassis is subject to change :D

as for headcanons...I'm borrowing heavily from his original toy description here: "Tough polymer-steel skin resists artillery" so he'll have a bit more bulk than Sideswipe even though their frames are near-identical and they have the same height.

I just love the idea of Sunny being able to tank more compared to his twin who's more agile. I know this concept isn't foreign because I've read a few fics that alluded to this too so that's nice!

Honestly tho I hope we get to see his actual cogged design in the sequel (PLEASEPLEASEPLEASPLEPLPEAPLS--)....✊😔 here's to manifesting

i'm rewatching arcane s1 and i think this is the first solo face to face fight that we see after finding out that ekko is the leader of the firelights and i'm just getting emotional because like after jinx is like omg hi the boy savior, ekko doesn't even say anything, the first thing he does when they meet is he starts swinging his watch and we're like what the fuck is going on

and so is jinx she's like what the fu- but then she gets it

he's bringing up this old game they used to play, something only he and powder would know about.

and powder does show up.

suddenly jinx is back to being powder again. she's giggly and excited, it's just her and ekko, it's just a game.

and then we see this sequence of slowed down intercuts of not just the game fight, but also a prediction of how the actual fight is going to play out

and they know how this game is going to turn out, they've played together so many times.

ekko gets shot. he loses. powder is too fast a shot for ekko to land a hit. powder wins.

and then we rewind back to the moment before their fight, and they play out the dance that they both know they're in. except this time,

there's no shot. there's this slowed moment where ekko's hovering in the air, fully open for a shot, and you're telling me that jinx the sharpshooter who's older now and is known for her speed can't land a hit?? no, she HELD HER SHOT

and gets bashed in the face by ekko a few times

and the first time i watched this scene, or in my memory of it, i interpreted this scene as being a moment where jinx is using ekko's feelings and memories of their childhood to emotionally manipulate him into not killing her/ beating her up, and i remembered that ekko fell for it and that jinx exploded them or something. but the way i remembered in my head it was like, jinx was like oh no! don't hit me i am poor baby powder! and then ekko is like omg you are poor baby powder and then jinx is like HEEHEE GOTCHA AS IF and then explodes them but now that im rewatching the show its more like

idk i'm sure this is supposed to represent like just how manipulative and awful jinx is that she would trick her childhood friend like that, but to me this is the face of someone who wishes things weren't like this. someone who's sorry that she has to do what she does next.

I'm sure this has been said before, but I really love the way Kim Rok Soo is such a vital part of who Cale is and becomes. That all the relationships and memories of the past still carry over to the interactions he has.

I feel like that doesn't happen that much in isekai. Where almost all of it is pushed aside so the protagonist can go focus on the fantasy. (Save for the usual my last life pretty sucked.tm) Where they just kinda wake up one day and just go "Sweet! Magic time!"

But there's just something off when Cale wakes up, like he already gave up on himself a long time before this. Like he was alive, but not really living. Like he's ready to go close everything out again despite being an absolute bleeding heart and failing miserably. (Because let's be honest, a bit of this guy probably died with the soos)

So when you find out about the absolute Trainwreck that is is previous life, it really is just rewarding to see him opening up again. This punk holds onto so much of his past, but it's really nice to see him walking forward too.

SO FUNFACT ABOUT CLEAVE'S NAME!!!

Initially, I was gonna call him Pitch but the name didn't stick to me as much until I explored some more words that could potentially be used to reflect him as a character while also fitting into the world of Arcane. Especially since I want his name to give off a vibe that he's from Zaun too and I want it to feel memorable.

I randomly thought of the word "cleave" and went to look for its meaning. Turns out!!! Cleave is a Janus word where the word has meanings opposing itself!

CLEAVE to divide by or as if by a cutting blow or to adhere firmly.

So I was like wow!!! That's fun!!! And I had a base idea for Cleave being something along that! Being one of the other depending on the context and how he's used.

For most his life he's been used as the more common meaning which is to split something apart and he never saw himself as more than that. Only when Steb is introduced into his life will he come to realize he's more capable than what he thought of himself :) Something about "These talons has only ever known how to hurt. Not heal."

SO THE SHIP NAME... Why Sleave??? 🤨🤨🤨

Combining Steb and Cleave would make Sleave (hah... sound like Steve...) which I'm TOTALLY SANE ABOUT (I Initially called them FishBone because Vultures specifically bearded vultures eats Bones LMAO)

BUT ANYWAY, I went searching to see if Sleave was an actual word cause like... English isn't my first language and I dont wanna accidentally use words I shouldn't. Imagine my surprise when Sleave IS an actual word and the meaning was... more fitting than I expected for the pairing!

Cleave is like a mess of threads... Then there's Steb who is most likely a field medic who would be good with sewing/mending wounds.. DO YOU SEE MY VISION!!!!!!

And she barely knows who this man is, but he says he's her brother that she really started to believe was dead (i had a brother, once, but he got lost on sea). And now he shows up in the ruins he left in his absence, tries to fit right back in. He reopened an old wound and she is furious
