not sure if this has been asked (of if this is the right place to ask this) so apologies if it has, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of locking a fic? are the bots really going to steal my work? i'm concerned about AI but I also don't want to prevent people who might like my work and friends without an AO3 account from reading it!

Good question!

Locking a fic essentially means that only folks logged in with an Ao3 account can access the fic. Aside from the Ai concern, people have been using it as a way to discourage harassment from anonymous users or making their personal work inaccessible to their irls who aren’t in fandom.

As for your ai concerns, according to the OTW announcement May 15, 2023:

“We've put in place certain technical measures to hinder large-scale data scraping on AO3, such as rate limiting, and we're constantly monitoring our traffic for signs of abusive data collection. We do not make exceptions for researchers or those wishing to create databases. Putting systems in place that attempt to block all scraping would be difficult or impossible without also blocking legitimate uses of the site.

With that said, it is an unfortunate reality that anything that is publicly available online can be used for reasons other than its initial intended purposes. In many cases, AI data collection traffic relies on the same techniques as the legitimate use cases above.”

They then go on to say: “You may want to restrict your work to Archive users only. While this will not block every potential scraper, it should provide some protection against large-scale scraping.”

Ultimately it’s up to you and what you want to prioritize!

tbh I like it less than I thought I would. I have nothing against neither the FWB nor the fake dating trope but to combine them is not working for me. The entanglement of Yak and Dee hooking up while also pretending to be fake bfs while Yak has feelings for someone else and asking Dee (who is obviously feeling more than he is) for love advice while leading him on in the process is making my brain hurt lol. not to mention there's Ter who rejected Dee and is now - supposedly - realizing his feelings afterall while Kwan obviously has feelings for him?? I don't mind messy situations but this doesn't make sense to me and it mostly makes me dislike Yak.

Him and Dee have had some cute moments but overall I'm not feeling the chemistry and the NC stuff and the dialogues that come with it are cringey to me. I wish we would see more of Yei and Cher because at least their story is coherent lol.

I decided to give it a chance and not drop it because I want to see where it's going. But so far it's a miss for me.

An Geister und Dämonen will ich wirklich gern glauben, aber ich kann es nicht, weil die Vorstellung allein zu fantastisch klingt. Die Wissenschaft sagt mir, was mit dem Körper nach dem Tod passiert und deshalb bin ich der Meinung: Gehirn aus, wir aus. Nach dem Tod kommt nichts. Aber ich wünschte, dass es Geister gäbe.

Aliens ist ne andere Sache. Gibt da irgendwo da draußen Leben auf einem anderen Planeten? Ja, bestimmt. Genauso (oder auf andere Weisen) wie das Leben auf der Erde angefangen hat.

Werden wir jemals etwas so richtig davon mitbekommen? Also werden wir mal von ihnen besucht? Oder haben wir die Chance, das Leben in den Weiten des Alls noch näher zu erkunden? Nein. Ich denke, dass das alles SO weit von uns entfernt ist und die ganze Sache wieder nur ein Traum der Menschheit ist, der sich nicht erfüllt.

Aber das ist okay. Ich find das voll okay, dass es da draußen irgendwo leben gibt und ich nie etwas davon mitbekommen werde.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher.. wenn ich welche hätte, dann wüsste ich nichts von ihnen, weil sie im Knast sind. Meine Familie will aus irgendeinem Grund nichts miteinander zu tun haben und meine Eltern haben uns ab einem bestimmten Punkt im Laufe der Zeit von den schlimmsten Mitgliedern abgekapselt.

Manchmal wurde mir erzählt, dass ein bestimmtes Mitglied "nicht da ist" oder "irgendwie nicht erreichbar ist, aber man nicht wüsste, was los sei" und nach Jahren war die Person dann plötzlich wieder da. Da ging auf jeden Fall shady Zeugs ab, aber glücklicherweise hat man versucht, die Kinder nicht so krass kaputtzumachen, und hat uns deshalb kaum was erzählt.

Aber: jede Menge Drogen- und Alkoholabhängige, viel häusliche Gewalt und andere unverzeihliche Dinge.

drarry tropes: 'second chance' and 'auror partners' 👀

this is such a good one!! foundational for drarry, imo. i love it generally, but i also love the spicier flavor of this trope which is 'getting back together', one of my all time, absolute favorite tropes ever. so good.

D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won’t necessarily put me off reading something.

ahhh, okay. so i've read a bunch of auror partner fics and have loved so many of them, but i've grown increasingly disenchanted with harry as an auror and def draco as an auror. so it's getting harder for me to brush that aside and get into this trope. it's one of (many) enormous issues i have with harry's ~canon future and i love fanfic as a way of fixing that, so tropes that play into it aren't for me personally. i can't separate a lot of the usual plot beats that go into them from classic cop stories which read too much like copaganda, which is a bummer!! again just for me personally though.

ask me to grade tropes! (especially big drarry ones)
