Winning Hearts - Alex Cabot
Alex straightened the collar of her coat for the third time as she sat in the passenger seat of your car. The normally unshakable, confident Assistant District Attorney looked decidedly nervous.
“I still don’t see why you’re nervous,” you teased, glancing at her as you drove down the winding road leading to your parents’ house. “You cross-examine criminals for a living.”
She gave you a small smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Criminals are predictable. Your parents are… not.”
You laughed, reaching over to place a reassuring hand on hers. “They’re just protective. You’ll be fine. They’ll love you.”
“I hope you’re right,” Alex murmured, smoothing her pants for the tenth time. She wanted to make the perfect impression. Meeting the parents of the woman she loved was a big deal, but the stakes felt even higher knowing how important your family was to you.
The car came to a stop in front of the modest suburban home you grew up in. Alex inhaled deeply, collecting herself, before stepping out.
Your parents greeted you both warmly enough at the door, but Alex immediately felt the weight of their scrutiny. Your dad’s handshake was firm, a little too firm, and your mom’s polite smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“So, Alex,” your dad started as you all moved to the living room. “Y/N tells us you’re a lawyer?”
“Yes, sir. I’m an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan.”
“Big city work,” he mused, his tone neutral but his gaze sharp. “Must keep you busy.”
“It does,” Alex admitted. “But I make it a point to prioritize my personal life. Especially Y/N.” She glanced at you, her blue eyes softening.
Your mom chimed in. “And how long have you two been together?”
“A little over a year now,” Alex replied smoothly. “Though it feels like we’ve known each other forever.”
Your parents exchanged a look. “Forever’s a long time,” your dad said, leaning back in his chair. “You think you’re ready for that kind of commitment?”
Alex didn’t miss the edge in his tone. She paused, choosing her words carefully. “I know what I want, and I know what Y/N deserves. I take commitment seriously.”
You squeezed her hand, silently letting her know she was doing great. Still, you could tell your parents weren’t fully convinced yet.
As the evening wore on, the initial tension began to thaw, slowly but surely. Over dinner, Alex shared stories from her work, careful to balance the seriousness of her career with moments of humor.
“And then,” Alex said, grinning, “the defendant tried to argue that his dog was the one who forged the signature. It was… creative, to say the least.”
Your dad chuckled despite himself, and your mom even cracked a smile.
“You must have a lot of patience for that kind of nonsense,” your mom said, her tone softening.
“It helps to have a sense of humor,” Alex admitted. “But more than that, it helps to have someone to come home to who makes it all worthwhile.”
Her gaze lingered on you, and your mom’s expression shifted, less skeptical, more understanding.
By the time dessert rolled around, Alex had managed to win over your parents a little more. She’d asked your mom about her garden, listened intently to your dad’s stories about his old college days, and even helped clear the table without being asked.
Your dad poured everyone coffee, and as you all sat back, he leaned forward with a twinkle in his eye.
“You know, Alex,” he started, “I’ve got to admit, I wasn’t sure about you at first.”
Alex straightened, meeting his gaze. “I understand. Y/N means the world to you. It’s only natural to want the best for her.”
“But,” he continued, “you’ve shown me tonight that you care about her. Really care about her. And I respect that.”
Your mom chimed in, smiling warmly for the first time. “You seem like a good fit for our daughter. Though if you ever hurt her, you’ll have us to answer to.”
Alex smiled, her confidence returning in full force. “Understood. And I promise, that won’t happen.”
Your dad raised his coffee mug in mock seriousness. “Well then, Alex, you’ve got my blessing. Just don’t propose at Thanksgiving dinner or something.”
Alex laughed, but you noticed the faintest hint of a blush on her cheeks.
“Dad!” you exclaimed, mortified.
“What?” he said innocently. “I’m just saying. It’s always the holidays with people these days.”
Alex caught your eye, a secret smile tugging at her lips. Later, when you were alone, she’d tell you that the idea didn’t sound so bad.
For now, though, she simply raised her coffee cup and said, “Noted, sir. Noted.”
Your dad leaned back in his chair, giving Alex a mock-stern look. “But let us know in advance. You gotta give us some time to emotionally prepare if we’re going to shell out for a wedding.”
“Dad,” you groaned, your face burning.
Alex smirked, her nerves completely gone now. She was clearly enjoying herself. “You will be the first to know, Sir. I’ll also make sure to send a formal calendar invitation, complete with a PowerPoint presentation. No surprises. Promise.”
Your mom laughed at that, shaking her head. “Well Alex, if you were to propose…” She let the sentence hang in the air for a moment, leaning forward conspiratorially. “…You do know she loves a dramatic gesture, right? Something big. A grand speech. Maybe fireworks?”
Alex tilted her head thoughtfully, playing along. “Fireworks might be a bit much. But a flash mob? That I could work with.”
Your dad groaned, slapping his palm to his forehead. “Great. Now I’ve got to worry about dance routines breaking out at family events.”
Alex leaned over toward you, whispering loud enough for your parents to hear, “What do you think? Flash mob at your favorite diner? Or should I just surprise them at karaoke night?”
You buried your face in your hands, laughing. “Oh, God. This is my life now.”
Your dad grinned, pointing his coffee mug at Alex. “Just make sure you don’t let Y/N write the vows. She’s got the handwriting of a serial killer.”
“I do not!” you protested.
Alex laughed, looking at you with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. “Don’t worry, I’ve seen her notes. I’ve already deciphered the code.”
Your mom shook her head, a playful sigh escaping her lips. “Well, Alex, I have to admit you’ve got the sense of humor to survive this family. And trust me, you’ll need it.”
“Good,” Alex said with mock seriousness. “Because I plan on being around for a long, long time.”
Your parents smiled, and as the conversation shifted to lighter topics, you caught Alex’s hand under the table, giving it a small squeeze. She glanced at you, her smile softening, and you knew this was the start of something even better than you’d imagined.

LMFAO reading your response to that person and I don't even read any of your shit but damn do you have some fuckin audacity 😂
Fucking crazy you have the nerve to call someone tone deaf when your entire response was fuckin ridiculous and your entire blog is fucking self-centered AND Tone deaf.
"I write for EVERYONE" no? You don't? You literally have it in your pinned post that these are for you and nobody else.
If you want to be bitchy about shit that's fine but don't pretend your higher and holier-than-thou just because you ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY write for poc. Doesn't make you special. Self segregation ain't cute hon.
But since your reading comprehension is a bit low 🤗, which it VERY clearly is with all the times you contradict yourself in both your post and your response, I'll dumb it down for you
This person was courteous and complimenting your writing (that means they were being a decent person and saying nice things about you), and in response, you decided to be condescending (that means you talked down to them), victimize yourself for no reason, and insult them. (All of that just means you're a bitch, and a whiney bitch at that 🤗🤗)
Could this person have gotten their point across in a better, more eloquent way? Yeah, for sure. But regardless of what they said, you just decided to be petty because someone asked you to tag your stories better. Sad. It's a lil pathetic, really.
Once again, not finna read this chapter nor take you serious seeing as this is anonymous, but the fact that you came back to reply cuz I made ya madder is giving fan behavior 😭😭🫶🏾 it’ll get better luv, go touch some grass and come back when you gain some sense
If I offended you because of the way I responded idk what to say because this is like the 100th time me having the same convo but in a different font block me babes 🤦🏾♀️so, no, MY response to the anonymous ask demanding me to change my platform wasn't rude/too much
But other than that, you’re off with a great start, just take the passion you had to write this nonsense and pick a random fandom and you have yourself a fic 🫶🏾 you got this, can’t wait to read your works when you gain the courage to respond to me with your real page instead of anonymous 💀
P.S. go to the pinned post i have telling you that "If not all, the majority of my work(s) will be written with the heavy intentions of poc!reader/black!reader" something that's been up since the very beginning of my blog, so this is all null and void, mamas 😏
^^^had to make this the biggest it can go so you can see this ❤️
Edit: if you'll like a full answer, I'm not humoring any anonymous posts about this topic due to the spamming... thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️
