Jurdan proved they’re the most iconic by their every interaction just being ICONIC. There is no boring interaction between them. Every word they say to each other, every time their gazes meet, every time they simply are in the same room together, it never fails to make all of us lose our minds.

Are you reading the old or new version of tithe? How you like it so far?

oh I actually was unaware there were different versions! if anyone sees this and knows the differences, I’d love a primer. but I assume mine is the new version—it’s the newer cover.

I’m about 70 pages in, and as a disclaimer, I’m mostly paying attention to holly’s craft (I like learning!) so most of my notes so far are related to that. but some random thoughts:

breakneck pacing. the first chapter is so cursory that it’s odd. if I had to guess, I’d assume Holly does not struggle to move plots along, but does have to go back & create space for moments & characters to breathe (it seems like a skill she’s grown in since tithe)

her talent for capturing the feel of a place can definitely be seen in this book, even through some other more odd writing choices. like there’s an old, dilapidated coastal town, and I fully felt like I was there based on the sensory details she decided to highlight. I’ve also made note of other turns of phrases that I’ve found lovely—like at one point, there’s a line about the stormbright sky painting the woods silver. simple but beautiful. she’s just great with visual treats like that

I have no strong feelings about the characters yet—obviously I’m interested in Roiben, and I’m inclined to like Kaye, but that’s more a symptom of having read tfota. I don’t know how differently I’d feel if I’d picked this book up first

I’m excited to learn more about other courts. also, just getting more of a feel for how the fey work is cool—like the iron-tipped arrow, kaye’s magic, etc.

The tone of this one is wildly different than tfota lmao. I think @thewinecoloredsea called it fairy Euphoria or something like that and I see it now

im not doing a full review or anything but i will say i did enjoy the series. it's a solidly enjoyable series and i really don't have any huge complaints (other than the tail im SORRY but no)

im currently not planning on reading either of the novellas or the stolen heir but it is definitely a world i would return to one day :)

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on: It's not a hill I will kill on, every Regulus characterization is a good characterization, but:

Regulus was a blood supremacist and idealised Voldemort, however he did not use the Mudblood slur.

Please, consider this evidence from Kreacher's Tale. When citing Regulus Kreacher says: "For years he talked of the Dark Lord, who was going to bring the wizards out of hiding to rule the Muggles and the Muggle-borns..." and not long after that he goes: "The Mudblood touched Kreacher, he will not allow it, what would his Mistress say?"

And why is that you ask? Why does a boy raised in a household where Mudblood is only one of many degoratory terms tossed around, presumably casually and on daily basis, stick to Muggleborn so persistently that his House Elf knows to use it when citing him? Why, because he knows it's a word unfit for polite company and he was raised the world's most politest little boy!

(We can see evidence of that in Sirius, when he's being 'polite' to Mrs Weasley in OotP. I'm not going to copy paste the interactions but in the "Harry has the right to know about Voldemort!" argument in Ch1, Molly loses her cool faster than Sirius. It's also present in Snape's memories when they first meet on the train. James is like "Eew, Slytherin stinks!" and Severus' like "You stink!" and Sirius is making polite, neutral noises.)

IN CONCLUSION: Regulus is like a TikTok user, living in fear of some higher power that would punish him in ways unimaginable if he so much as thinks a foul word. But don't worry! He can eviscarete his enemies with polite words and a benign smile. (He learned from Narcissa ♥).

To paraphase a stand-up comedian I saw on Youtube Shorts once: "He will respect your pronouns but not you as a person."

dio,,, DIOOOOOOOO I AM IN YOUR WALLS!!! the yearning b side absolutely haunted me, I could see and hear that shit in my head like a damn MOVIE! thank you thank you thank you for the delicious angst it’s so precious and heartbreaking realizing how scared Steve truly would be about how he feels about Eddie. he’s seen as this strong protector who can handle it all and well and truly he’s just a boy (he’s jUst a boy!!) with vulnerabilities and that needs to be emphasized more me thinks. bless ur soul <3

:D hdhdhdg first of all thank you so much, i feel so powerful rn :D emotionally hurt steve harrington is one of my favourite things to write and explore because there’s just so much, it’s like an open buffet of trauma and repressed emotions :D

but also YES!! i think steve would store his feelings for eddie somewhere very close to his trauma and memories, and that would just paralyse and petrify him in a way that’s not easily lifted. they’d mingle and he’d be powerless to stop it, and before he knows it, he feels like he’s already lost before it even began. i personally think that’s how steve’s series of concussions, near-death experiences and grieving and loss within just a few years but during important personality development years come into effect. a quiet effect, but one that leaves him petrified of all things good that happen to him. all things good that are only for him, in a sense.

i also think he’s had to store away the feelings of fear and desperation and apprehension in the face of life or death situations so that he doesn’t know how to handle this fear of being, and being known, which is one of the easier fears to battle — if only one knows how to. and that’s why he can’t have good things for himself, he can’t get over the initial freak-outs of a crush, just finds himself in love and unable to do anything about it.

there’s something endlessly tragic about that, because imagine you preserve your life and that of your friends, right, but then you lose the ability to enjoy what makes it worth living after surviving. and then you find yourself at the quarry because places of horror and darkness —where there’s only one wrong step separating life from death — are the only places you know how to be anyone anymore.

sometimes i take this steve and think, “how do i possibly write a steddie fic with you, romance won’t fix this. you wouldn’t let it if it could.” but then i also take that eddie who knows a thing or two about being scared and not being allowed to be just a boy in your own right, who knows something about the terror of being queer in bumfuck, Indiana, and i think, and i think “yknow maybe these two can see each other in a way where darkness doesn’t matter as much. maybe romance won’t fix this, but kindness and understanding and love can.”

and then i end up with hurt steve yearning fics :D (though i love to make eddie just as scared)

(the steve doesn’t know how to face his emotions or be entirely vulnerable even in an established relationship is also indicated here, but in an entirely fluffy floaty way)
