Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Sweet & Sour Dipplins!!! CHAPTER 24 IS HERE ❤️

Fun fact: did you know the anniversary date of this fic is Christmas Day? :) It's true! And as of today, Sweet & Sour Dipplins is officially a year old. 🥳

This fic initially started as a fun little idea - an enemies to lovers romance retelling of the Indigo Disk DLC with a toxic chain theory twist. It was a fanatical whim based on what is now my favorite pokemon game, and it was a blind attempt at creating something bigger than what I could initially picture. I loved romance and writing, but I was no writer - and certainty no fiction writer at that. I fully expected what I was doing to be a phase, where I quietly threw out a couple of half-baked chapters of into an empty void before it inevitably fizzed out with me moving on.

But then you all came along. The love that I have received and felt has been indescribable. I have been completely and utterly blown away by all of it: the number of readers, the playful and thought-provoking comments, the fun back and forth and theorizing in my ask box, the ART and the suggestions and the headcanons and the feedback?! It kept growing, and growing, and growing. And a year later, even as the fandom is a little quieter, it's all still here. You’re all still here.

My little ideas became a whole "au" (see, I've learned! xD). My “writing activity” that I was too modest to claim as a “hobby” became an identity that you all reinforced. I went on to not only write over a book’s worth for this story, but multiple books’ worth for others. In a very demanding, tumultuous, and tiring year in my personal life. Before writing this current chapter, I actually went back and re-read the entirety that is Sweet & Sour Dipplins. As the writer, there were a lot of ups and downs for me, and I don't speak as much about the downs. I could tell which chapters I wrote with pride and which ones felt rushed. Slowly but surely, I worried more and more about it being "interesting enough" as my audience grew. I worried about my motifs becoming “lost” in the inflation. I asked myself: Does it deserve the hits? Do people still care about this story the more the Earth rotates? And then I wondered: What is the true heart that is Sweet & Sour Dipplins? What actually pulls people to read this story?  What compelled ME to write this story?

And as I experienced it all as a reader myself, I think I began to see its soul in yet another light.

I remembered the visions I had as I was writing. I saw some things I didn’t see before, too, and even had moments where I went “Hey, you know what, I could probably write that even better now”, and it’s all thanks to you all for encouraging me to keep going.

But above all: I got the spark back. And I am excited to keep expanding the heart of this story as I share more of it with you.

1- How did they meet and what were their first impressions of each other? In my mind Mello was already at Wammy's House when Near got there around age like… 7-8? Idk if the Wammy's staff would have formally introduced new children to their peers or just been like, "yo dropping this kid into their new enclosure, whatever bye", but either way:

Mello's first impression of Near was basically "huh, weird kid! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" and then forgot all about him... until Near started outdoing him in every single subject ever except sports.

Near's first impression of Mello I could see go two ways: "who is this insanely charismatic sun-haired angel, I am having my first ever crush" OR "who is this loud agitated bastard, can't he be quiet and still, I'm sad about my family and trying to think". Either works for me dhgdsf.

28- What's a conversation they'd get overly invested in that nobody else would care about?

In the post-canon "Mello lives and they work together as L" AU that my brain seems bent on conjuring today: one time during a particularly slow/unbusy few weeks, they get really into figuring out the perfect font, kerning, line spacing, etc for optimised legibility of work documents. It gets to the point they're like, essentially collaborating on this, but ALSO having heated disagreements, printing out a bunch of test sheets for comparison, etc, culminating in one time when they take it to their staff... who are all like "uhhhh, who cares as long as we can read the stuff, what are you two getting so worked up about ?_?" and they are both so mad that nobody else cares. (They are just not getting enough enrichment in their enclosure, doctor idleness will KILL the patients they need fresh interesting thinking material to live)

In actual canon, I think that's more likely to happen at Wammy's House, due to the degree of focus the Kira case required from both of them + the fact they didn't really have any kind of regular contact after Mello left the orphanage. Probably some obscure area of science both of them happened to get really into at the same time, and couldn't find anybody else on their level to discuss with (I am unfortunately not enough of a science/maths person to have any idea what the exact topic could be lol)

30- What's something one thinks the other should improve upon? This one is really hard for me because in my mind they accept each other fully as they are and would not change anything about the other, even if/when it pisses them off <3 but trying to actually answer the question,

Mello prooobably thinks Near's emotional regulation skills could use some improvement? This is brought to you by a post I saw recently (unfortunately cannot find the post nor remember who made it) about how Mello is used to living life at an emotional intensity level of 85, so he's good at handling his emotions in general despite the occasional impulsive behaviour; whereas Near very infrequently going from his average of 0.3 emotional intensity to 60 is Much Harder for Near to cope with. And I think in the context of a romantic relationship between them, that skill imbalance could cause some friction / Mello definitely would want Near to get Better at it dfsfd

The other way around... welp. I have been rotating this in my mind for a literal ten minutes and cannot envision a single thing that Near would seriously believe (as opposed to off-handedly think and forget about 10 seconds later) Mello should do better. He thinks Mello is great exactly the way he is. Because who is Near if not the original Mello stan and apologist <3

What’s the plot? Who are the main characters? Any fun lore details you’re bursting to share?

YES okay so:

The plot:

Edwin, heir to the throne and very-soon-to-be king, is sent on a quest by his father to prove himself a worthy future king: he must journey far to the west of the kingdom and defeat a terrible evil threatening the kingdom. With the help of Meghan, a royal knight in training, Atla, a physician, and Soarn, an archer, he sets out on this quest, but the longer they travel together, the harder it becomes to keep secrets hidden. And when they finally reach the end of their journey, they discover this great evil isn’t all that it seems—and neither is the king.

The characters (AKA more detail of the above):

Edwin:

- my prince character! He’s 19, almost 20

- Speaks relatively ‘proper’ initially, until the others infect him with their speech patterns

- autistic

- Disabled, but no one except his immediate family know of it. There was an accident when he was 7 which wound up with his leg being crushed by a statue, and even though he’s healed now, it’s permanently weakened and causes him pain, either from flare ups or when he uses it too much (or both!) He blames himself for the accident.

- Best (and only) friend is Meghan. They’ve known each other since they were 4-5 and are extremely close. No romance between them, although Edwin had a little crush on her when they were very, very young, before he found out she doesn’t like men. They laugh about it now.

- Related to the above note: he also gets very jealous when Meghan is with her other friends. His father never allowed him to make other friends—Meghan pushed her way into his life anyway.

- Terrible at taking care of himself. Forgets to eat/sleep a lot

- Does not have a good relationship with either of his parents, but he is desperate to make his father proud, hence why he so readily accepted this quest.

- Used to have an older brother. When a prince from a neighbouring kingdom visited, he and Edwin hit it off quickly. Edwin snuck him into his rooms to keep playing, and when he fell asleep, the other prince stole his master keys, snuck into his brother’s room, and smothered him with a pillow. No one ever believed Edwin when he tried to share the truth. He very much blames himself for his brother’s death.

- Cannot fight for the life of him. Uses a dagger for self-preservation, but again, not good at wielding it

Meghan:

- My royal-knight-in-training character! 19 years old.

- Best friends with both Edwin and Atla

- Comes from a family of scholars. Her parents have aided the king many times and her mother is one of his trusted advisors. She was expected to follow in her parents footsteps, but she prefers to protect from the front lines, and pushed to get into knight training. Her parents do not approve of this

- A handful of months before the book starts, she ran away from home due to her parents attempting to tear her away from her training. They had a fight, and she never went home. She lives on the streets and can’t bring herself to tell Edwin when he’s already got so much on his plate

- Silly, smart and strong, she’s determined to enter into the royal guard and keep Edwin safe when he ascends. She worries about him a lot. She’s also very soft!

- Butch lesbian

- Determined to protect others to the point of self-sacrifice, and is not kind to herself when she fails (which comes from her parents never accepting this choice of hers)

- She tends to have trouble listening to others—once she sets her mind on something, that’s how they’re doing it. This causes issues between herself and Edwin later on, as well as with Atla.

- Miiiight get a teeny crush on Soarn, until she realises the other girl is aroace. (Edwin has the same issue, and they both laugh about it together)

- Fights with a sword primarily, but can use anything as a weapon in a pinch

Atla:

- My physician character! Their age is… ahem. Technically 18, but their body has been in the world for over 300 years. I will elaborate below.

- They’ve been training under the head physician since they were 13, and excelled to the point where they are now one of her assistants. Very useful on this quest.

- Nonbinary!

- They have godly heritage on their mother’s side, giving them golden eyes, hair, and two golden wings upon their back at birth. They were a cherished secret in their village, bringing good luck and always eager to help their community. They took to healing quickly, using magic granted to them from their godly wings to mend broken bones and nasty gashes. However, a terrible man found out about them and moved to the village, befriending them swiftly. They played together in the forest often, until one day, the man led them into the forest and tore their wings from their back. He then buried them alive to get rid of the evidence and used the magic from the wings to trick the kingdom into accepting him as their leader. He also uses the feathers from the wings to stay alive for far longer than any human should

- 300 years later, the gods bring Atla back to life, feeling their unfortunate ending was unjust, and Atla is deadset on revenge, but they have no way to get close to the man who killed them… until this quest is shared with them, five years after they were brought back to life

- Their wings were not brought back with them, and they now have chronic back pain where their wings used to be

- They were taken in by two loving mothers into a massive family, and they love their mamas, but… they miss their first family, and their village. But that’s all long gone now

- Best friends with Meghan, and would kill for her if need be (“I’m a healer, but—“)

- Can speak to animals. No one else knows this yet

- The cook of the group! They cook a lot of old family recipes to help themself feel close to the family they will never see again

- Fights with a hammer! A lot of rage piled up within them from their unjust death and then consequential revival.

- Has… ulterior motives for being on this quest.

Soarn:

- My archer character! She’s 17, almost 18

- Transfem! and aroace!

- She is a Desikah (a race of magical folks in my book who look similar to humans for the most part, but also… a little off. They each drift toward a certain type of magic at birth (fire, water, earth, shadow or light) and very few may wield two kinds of magic. Soarn herself is an earth- and light-type Desikah. The Desikah are very much hated due to a terrible reputation built up by the king (and maintained using magic) and hunted if they are ever caught. But they’re actually a very peaceful group, who care deeply for the world around them and everyone and everything in it.)

- No one but her father (human) knows she is a Desikah (from her mother’s side) and she will not tell anyone for fear of being slaughtered

- Has an animal friend! Her name is Maipa, and she is a Felivus (think, a cat with the back legs and wings of a raven), a magical race of creatures known for their healing abilities and intelligence. (She and Atla talk a lot). Soarn saved Maipa when she was just a kit, mending her broken wing, and Maipa imprinted on her and will stay with her through thick and thin, until death

- Her mother passed away when she was young, and her father is very cold towards her. He taught her how to hunt, however, and she wields her bow expertly, her connection to the earth aiding her in shooting true and striking her prey every time.

- She joins the quest later on, saving Edwin from a blow from a bandit that would have ended his life. She and Edwin do not hit it off well initially (entirely on Edwin’s part) but they both have terrible fathers, and they bond over that.

- She does not have a lot of self-worth initially, due to her father and the terrible community she grew up in. (the others will bash self-worth into her eventually).

Fun lore details:

OKAY SO. The king is clearly a terrible man, but it’s much worse than you think. Hundreds of different races of magical creatures used to roam the land, until the king used the magic in the feathers of Atla’s wings to cast a massive spell upon all humans in his land—one that imbued a deep hatred and distrust in any magic. The creatures were hunted nearly to extinction and banished from the lands. Why did the king do this? He felt magic of any kind was a threat to him and his rule, and he is very much a power-hungry, evil man.

Some magical creatures still live in the kingdom, one most humans don’t know of at all (Atla knew of Felivi as they were around when they were first alive). But most have been forced to other kingdoms, or into hiding—there is an underground community of thousands, hidden away beneath the desert, that the king has no idea of. And they would all love to get revenge on the man who forced them out of their homes :)

(And thank you for asking! November has been MISERABLE. We’ve been hopping between wet and freezing, and then scorching hot and humid T.T I, naturally, have come down with a cold because of the jump in temps. Hoping you’re handling it better!)

so like i mentioned before i have this fun au where all my ocs exist in each other's social circles some way or another...

tl;dr

eli isn't sure if he wants to be that or climb that - that scarf is probably his entirely monthly paycheck, this guy is just so put together and handsome... while adrià thinks his barista sure is taking his sweet time... he has to wonder where sebastian (another oc, guy who owns the shop) picked this guy up LMAOOO. i think even if they got to know each other it'd still be hard for eli to approach him casually because adrià is pretty closed off (without a mutual intermediary). one way they would bond is if they have someone they both hate LOL

so more about them -

adrià - he's a famous fashion designer who rarely shows his face in-person. he's aloof, has resting bitch face, has this dignified air about him like he thinks he's better than everyone else (he doesn't! mostly), he's drop dead gorgeous, he's got his life by the cojones and refuses to go to therapy. he's like one of those guys from a bad straight erotica book where the lady gets swept off her feet by a rich asshole, except minus most of the charisma. fiercely loyal once you're friends though!

in terms of his position in the au - adrià is lucas' older brother, who's wooing sebastian (coffee shop owner).

and meanwhile eli gonna eli lmao. he's just a guy survivin'. he doesn't change much from how he is in fnv - i mean, you take out looking for the guy that shot you in the head and getting tangled into large political schemes, and you've got an annoyingly curious guy who loves to talk your ear off about mechanical engineering and also music and falls easily for the next guy who's somewhat nice to him :/

eli is friends with seb after fixing his machine + working together, and lives with his sister, camille, who coincidentally coaches adrià and lucas in physical fitness and kickboxing.

Does your muse like music? Is there any genre they prefer? Do they sing or play any instrument?

// Heysel likes music for sure, though she is no expert on it! It’s the sort of thing that has slightly different facets depending on the verse- bb/hunter had her frequenting certain intellectual, sophisticate-ish circles before her desperate escape to yharnam once she fell ill, so she did have the occasion to see and enjoy plenty from the music hall to the opera; in more medieval settings she so relishes whatever singing and playing she can find in her often otherwise desolate worlds, and will offer coin for it when she can’t in hope to maybe just maybe convince you to be the music-maker; we don’t even begin with what constitutes her musical tastes in her modern verse, nor we want to get into that, though how wonderful it is to live in a time when all kinds of songs are so easy to find- but indeed Heysel always deeply enjoys music. Genre wise it also depends on the verse, but it’s fair to say that she has a certain preference towards anything gleeful with a quick rhythm and for the sort of heart-moving, tear-jerking songs of romance and love. Songs that she will sing gladly with or to you: she would preface with the statement that she has no dazzling natural voice or formal training in this specific field, but I can tell you she’s actually not bad at all (oh if only I had a voiceclaim for heysel) (one million years of this blog and still nothing)

Likewise, she’s not half bad at playing the one instrument she has learned to play: the gittern! As she retains possession of it only in her main dks verse, and fortunately, because it was her father’s and she would have been saddened to have even that lost of him upon reawakening from death, heysel will thoroughly lament instead the lack of it in her existence in approximately every single other au, on account of the fact that in Every Single Au she can play the thing. Yes, even the modern one. Yes even the sci-fi ones. 

All in all, like all arts, music is beyond her in the actual mechanisms of it; she’s better at it than something more pictorial, but it still is a strange marvelous world, and she so loves to participate in it, in a way or another.

She would’ve taken me back, because she cared about me, longer than I really deserved it for. And this time-- she didn’t. She fucking… kept me away from the kids, and everything. She called you after like four nights. You’re both playing hot potato because neither of you can handle all of me.”

What’s the best and worst thing about your favorite Carmen Sandiego character?

OH that's a great question!! i needed time to think about it thoroughly, first because i wondered who my favorite character was (Carmen or Julia? in the end i went with carmen because i rotate her in my mind and think about her psyche sooo much), and then of course i couldn't just answer, i had to think about it for hours.

i think one of the best things about her, as in one of the things i love more about carmen's character, is her passion. her determination, her intensity. the way she is so dedicated to stopping vile she'd do anything. when she starts taking massive risks, even to her own detriment (once again i'm thinking about neal the eel's "you'll fry us both" in New Zealand in s2 - that was incredibly reckless on her part!). part incredible self-confidence in her own skills, part complete disregard for her own safety, part desperation because she sees no other way. when she becomes dead serious, like in Egypt when she was 100% ready to drop that artefact in the abyss in order to get julia back, and she drops the smile and the lightheartedness fully. those moments when you see how much her whole mission and her friends mean to her. her refusal to call chief in stockholm because no way she's risking her freedom. her face when she tases coach brunt in the s1 finale, all scowl and gritted teeth. that's why i'm talking about intensity. the way it almost borders on rage. i find it very relatable, when love for something means you grow teeth to protect it.

the worst thing, in the sense of 'thing i am most frustated with'... i'd have to go with. the way she's always in control and with a funny quip. like she's rarely vulnerable, be it physically or mentally speaking. you rarely see carmen being shaken, stumbling, having nothing to retort, or just being plain wrong and making mistakes. or even just acting goofy, you know? now, of course, i'd like to think it's because of her trauma, because she feels like she has to - she's got this heavy responsibility she feels she can't share with anyone, she can't slip up or vile will triumph. she wears this mask to make her seem cool, confident and controlled, like she's untouchable, but sometimes it's nothing more than a lie.

(as an aside, i want to say carmen absolutely needs to have this confidence and this charisma. it's part of her charm and it's so very carmen sandiego. to me that's an essential feature of the character. but, since she is the protagonist, the character we're always following, it would make sense to see her other facets too, you see what i mean?)

buuut... if it were that, i would want an arc of her learning it's okay to make mistakes, it's okay to take time for herself, it's okay to let herself be young and be herself, it's okay to be vulnerable. especially with her close friends. and for that ivy and zack would be ESSENTIAL. carmen needs people who are not from vile and who know how to be more relaxed (i love player but i don't think he'd be able to help carmen much with that, he seems to be having the same problem sjkdbgjdkg).

but that's not what we got from the show, so what, are we supposed to think carmen's perfect all the time? let her show some personality, dammit

hi lawyer fans here is something from awhile ago involving a fancase i was working on for an alternate post-7yrs timeline. i will put a cut here because i dont know how interesting it is to anyone else <3

basically the gavinners were in the middle of working on a steel samurai musical that has had nothing but trouble befall it and that was all BEFORE daryan’s arrest. sad for them. but good for miles! because he has spent the last 7 years working on a bill regarding prison reform after his adventures in aai2 instead of doing whatever it is the post-aa4 retcon canon is. he’s been trying to get klavier to use his star power to sponsor it but the problem is that klavier has no interest in reforming anything. (especially since he’s very image conscious and he feels like sponsoring a prison reform bill after his brother has been even more thoroughly imprisoned+sentenced to death? whatever happens to him? (however bills like this work? i am not versed in law) would make it look like he was only doing it for his brother. don’t be mistaken, though. he is in a police-themed band that has police recruitment posters in their dressing room. he does not need any persuasion to be Tough On Crime)

however now that daryan’s arrest has revealed Some Trouble Afoot In The Criminal Justice System on top of the very bad steel samurai musical, klavier is desperate for a good bit of PR to give him control over the situation again and phoenix (stagehand on the steel samurai musical in his spare time. he is a theatre guy! he’s gotta do something! it can’t all be nights at the inventory and practicing your mysterious beanie-shadowed faces in the mirror) has arranged for him and miles to talk this out and klavier can put up a nice instagram photo showing he has talked to at least one person about Making Things Better Somehow to put his fans at ease again. all that has to happen is for miles to absolutely not go berserk about how bad the steel samurai musical is. you’ll never believe what happens next!

OK, so! I have a ton of these maybe-fics that I could talk about but for you, I'll be on brand and go with the Hookhausen one!

So this would be a weird psychological horror fic, heavily influenced by the Silent Hill games. Basic gist - Hook and Danhausen are back together and sooo very happy! They've worked through some of their Issues and now they're closer than ever, dizzy in love, and ready to move forward with their lives. But then whoops, suddenly the night after a PPV, a giant creepy demon shows up, injures Hook and abducts Danhausen! Hook's devastated, stewing in his misery during recovery - he just got Danhausen back, after all. So when he's finally at 100%, he vows to GET. HIM. BACK. But he can't do it alone, so he assembles a ragtag crew consisting of Ricky Starks, Julia Hart and, inexplicably, Daniel Garcia (because reasons. Also, maybe Jack? And Anna? IDK) and the four of them set off to find where Danhausen was taken and rescue him! They end up at a creepy small ghost town that seems to have a twisted conscious of its own. Haunted by visions of their pasts, taunted by their inner demons, as well as literal demons, these four hapless queers fight to find their way through the madness and reunite Hook and Danhausen once again.
