I saw a post complaining about musical Dimitri so I want to know what is your favourite things about him in the musical?

sigh... musical dmitry... giggling kicking my feet twirling my hair thinking about him. i'm always daydreaming about him. if you saw me on the street irl i almost guarantee you'd catch me lost in some variation of musical dmitry thoughts.

there are so many things i could say here, anon. his redemption arc™ from a selfish liar to the most noble and self-sacrificing slavic sadboy i've ever seen? his angsty daddy issues backstory? his bewitching silly goose ways? how he lets One Woman completely change the trajectory of his life? how he falls into an emotional spiral about it? the way he Knows Who He Is and is very self assured in his identity, and helps anya do the same? how his identity is so intertwined with his home? his role as a Storyteller™? etc????

but for this ask today i'm going to focus on how gentle he is. i don't think gentleness is something that comes very easy to this dmitry. he lost his father at a young age, as we know. he was alone on the streets and had to fight to stay alive. he cons people for a living. by the time we meet him he's very cynical about the world and doesn't really trust anyone, other than vlad. mostly he just relies on himself and can't really count on anyone else. when he meets anya, a cryptic girl who is a bit off but in need of help, his first response is to scoff and send her away, since unstable people are too risky to deal with. he's capable of being charming, but he uses this skill to get what he wants.

a lesser character with an identical backstory would be gruff and unfeeling, but... this dmitry isn't. in spite of it all, he's so hopeful, though he buries it deep. his most treasured story is about a girl he met at a parade. he is known as the 'prince of petersburg,' has a relationship with everyone on the streets. in the hartford production he calls an older woman in the ensemble 'little mother.' he rescues vlad, a complete stranger, from a firing squad. and though he turns her down at first, he agrees to get anya to paris. he protects what's his own.

you can tell it takes him a while to learn gentleness. whether it's physical or verbal, especially around anya, he is still always on the defensive for a while. fight first, think later. she's really jumpy and skittish but he doesn't start changing his behavior until they fight the ruffians together. he flags all of his movements around her, making sure she knows his intentions first. he talks about his father. he gives her a music box because he thinks it'll make her smile. because she 'earned it.' when she's crying after a nightmare he tells her a sweet, simple story from his childhood.

the train scene is the best example of this shift-- when she cowers after the gunshot goes off, he is completely lost about what to do. 'calm her down,' vlad tells him, but how is he supposed to do that? she's sobbing into his shoulder and he's frozen, panicking, because what is he supposed to do here??? but he shushes her and holds her anyway. he does his best. and it works. in such a tense situation where they very well could be shot next he is so so gentle and patient with her. and by the time we reach iacot in paris, he knows exactly how to comfort her. he learned how to hold her gently and speak in a soft voice. how softness can ground someone in need.

to summarize: musical dmitry is... really soft? and softness/gentleness isn't really something you see in the conman archetype very often. he is so special.

In random hallways inside the library? Comfy! Perched up in a hammock on the ceiling of the living room? Yes sir!! Nm doesn’t get jumpy abt it since he just kinda got used to it but the other residents of the castle are NOT happy about Error’s extremely odd chilling spots

hi!! i just wanted to let you know that i started reading cherry magic in july last year after seeing the anime announced on toyota-sensei's twitter! i couldn't even rlly translate the announcement myself without the help of google translate LMAO but her illustration of them looked so sweet i had to snoop around. more than half a year later. i am no longer normal and my brain is fully rotted over and i think of those two nearly every waking moment!! your art, along with so many others feeds me and your translations are So Appreciated thank you for doing gods work. i usually don't get super involved in fandom or w/e other than consuming fanart or fics so the fact i find myself actually drawing them is so new to me...idk cherry magic really is so refreshing and it's just nice as an adult to see a mature relationship between two working adults. there are callbacks to childhood or childlike behaviors or interests sprinkled throughout the manga's dialogue and i always appreciated how they weren't seen as embarrassing or immature to embrace or learn from as an adult, but encouraged or seen as a valuable part of balancing work, life, and love. idk it's def one of the more subtle and less expanded upon parts of it but i love how adachi's and kurosawa's love of manga, though seen as a children's activity (from how kurosawa thought people saw it) was actually one of their first mutual hobbies. it's also interesting to see how many things about kurosawa's psyche are remnants of ideas probably for a lack of better wording, were taught to him from an early age. his self-image, how he tries to uphold certain societal standards, etc etc. im glad he found refuge in adachi that way. im sorry for rambling for so long but i've just been thinking about these two so much ldks

and yess everything u said abt the childlike/immature stuff krdc enjoy like the fact that their interest in manga and stuff is never made fun of or anything (which would be ironic anyway since theyre In a manga themselves fdkjskf) but actually one of the things that gets them closer is So good augh?? (also spoilers for the radio drama if u havent seen it yet, but to me one of the best changes they made was changing the port scenes setting to an anime con instead like Yeah!! theyre little nerd guys of course theyd attend a con!!!! that plus how they both like watching animated movies and playing games too like its a very specific thing to Me but that relatability w stuff i do myself makes them both feel a lot more human? if that makes sense)

also w kurosawas whole deal its Definitely a longterm thing hes had for a while, and in canon its mostly been his friendships/relationships that affected him (probs the most clear in ch45 my beloved) but from the way the meeting w his parents went theres for sure a lot of parental/family pressure involved too?? this is going into hc territory but i have like a whole Thing brewing in my head about kurosawas and maris relations w their parents and how that affected their self image and all growing up too and i rlly wanna make stuff for it someday (idk if anyone would be interested but id probably do it regardless so fkdjksjfk)

Soooo many people have such knee jerk reactions to tentatodd, but i can kinda get where people saying its poorly written are coming from.

Dick: mostly accurate, but this was one of the first comics to lean into him being a "womanizer" when in the past he was very long term commitment oriented in his relationships. That's the only thing that really sticks out as bad about his characterization to me.

Jason: people who think murder has to equal edgy get upset that jason is kind of a silly guy. Jason has a sense of humor, it shows in his other comics from what I've seen as well, but BiB has him maybe behaving a bit more "childish" than is expected.

When people think about Jason and Dick they often imagine Dick as the coping with humor jokester and Jason as the no-nonsense one, when in most of their interactions, I think it tends to be the opposite. Dick takes himself incredibly seriously, especially when he's dealing with Jason, and Jason is constantly challenging Dick's worldview, or even Dick's sense of self through taunts/jabs/jokes etc. And Jason is funny! He's just dry and morbid with a lot of his humor, so I think people can miss some of it.

Also: regardless of Dick's orientation, his relationships often come off as compulsory, being with someone because he thinks it's normal/right/he just should (or DC just thinks it'll sell more).

Starfire is really the biggest notable exception, and even that extreme closeness could be taken as "you're my best friend and you changed my life, but I'm supposed to prioritize a romantic partner above all else. So i want you to be that romantic partner so that i can keep you close to me."

Babs falls very firmly in the "i admire you and everyone thinks we should be a couple so im sure this is fine" category. She's been referred to as a big sister for Dick more than any of the Robins have been referred to as brothers, lol. She even used to be a solid decade older than him! The first time they kissed DC had to issue a statement saying that it wasn't meant as romantic, because, yknow. Adult mentor/Older sister figure kissing a child.

I really got off topic huh. Oh boy.

So, I'm writing a long fanfic based around the characterizations of the various Bats in the 80s-00s time frame, and Nightwing is gonna be important but I don't have a good grasp of his personality yet. I'm currently reading through The Resurrection of Ras Al Ghul, but that and a few of the 2016 issues are all I've got to go off of right now.

Do you have any comics you'd recommend for getting a good grasp of his personality and general vibes?

I'd also be happy to read any kind of ramble about his personality/appeal you feel like writing. Having read your fanfiction I feel like (sincere compliment:) you are the exact kind of unhinged I want to get character opinions from.

ok first of all. im flattered. i feel so powerful rn.

and second of all... my 'to read' list is embarrassingly long, and dick's been around and in a lot of comics so i have a lot of trouble keeping up ;-; but i will try my best!!

The New Teen Titans gets recommended a lot as a starting point for Dick as Nightwing, and while i havent read much of it, the stuff i have read has been pretty solid and i get why its so popular.

Nightwing 1996 is my personal go to comic for Dick, mainly bc it was his first real solo run. (it's often listed as "volume 2" of nightwing, but volume 1 aka Nightwing 1995 was really more of a test drive just to see if they should make a Nightwing solo series) It's also where Dick joins the mob! although that came off the tail end of a lot of different plot points.

(This is a bit unrelated, but in general I think knowing a bit of irl context to certain comic events is important. Like, at one point Bludhaven is nuked off the map. It doesn't make sense, and it was most likely due to some higher up DC nonsense. And Nightwing 1996's second annual is written by a man. etc etc.)

... I actually have a guide I've been working on, main reasons being quick reference for what happens where, and that writing these things down helps me remember them better

Mobbed Up (where Dick gets adopted by a random mob boss who took one look at his depressed mug as he was getting fired from the police force and said "new son?") is issues #107-111

I feel like I should get back to character thoughts.

Dick on his own is deeply serious, he has a job to do and it's incredibly important that he does it right. In the beginning this serves as an invaluable asset, but as he loses more people it starts to turn into more destructive. A trait that is morphed by his traumas into obsessiveness.

Dick when Tim comes to visit (or just when he's around people he cares about) is a bit softer, it's subtle, but it shows that he's aware of/cares for the people around him.

Dick with Bruce around seems to worry so much about proving himself, about being seen as a respectable peer, that it backfires into making him come off more insecure and as a bit of a "rebellious teen". (which is exactly what he's trying to avoid when he strikes out on his own) I've read various arcs and issues but I haven't actually read any focused on Dick and Bruce aside from the ones towards the beginning, so I'm sure their relationship must change, but this is how they were when Dick had first moved to Blud.

I feel like Bludhaven is also important to talk about. It's very much meant to be "Gotham, but worse". It's a place that even Batman wouldn't bother with, a place beyond saving. I'm... kind of breaking my own heart, thinking about how much Dick put into this city, only to. To fail? In a sense? A hero's home city isn't usually obliterated like that. The only other example that comes to mind is Hal Jordan's, and Hal literally went insane and became a space terrorist to bring it back. Dick is just... forced to move on.

And Dick goes back to NYC. Nightwing patrolling Gotham with any regularity feels very modern. He shows up when there's a major event and DC wants to capitalize on having a bunch of names in the same series, and he shows up when something drastic changes (like a new robin, or a death). Dick has however spent a lot of time in NYC, either because of the Titans or because. yknow. home go boom.

Anyways. Arc recs. Unironically I need you to read Brothers in Blood. Get past the initial gross out factor of Tentatodd and it's a great look at Jason and Dick's relationship. This is #118-124 and right after Bludhaven gets nuked. Dick has just experienced the lowest lows that one could low. Jason seems to know all about it, and tries to help in the worst way possible. Jason is right and blunt and convoluted and so so insecure about where he stands with Dick. Dick doesn't know where he stands with Jason either, on account of all the murder, and his tactless approach to trying to confront Dick on the copious amounts of trauma that Dick is dealing with. BiB is my Jaydick bible.

I'd also say to just give the first few arcs a shot. Beginnings are meant for introductions! It gives a good sense of who Dick is, why he's here, and what his goals are. Exposition baby! And I'm once again thinking about how ultimately Dick kind of fails said goals. I love him but he makes me so emo. Blockbuster has also been his main villain since the beginning, up until. Yknow. He became deader than his namesake. There's also a few fear toxin based issues that are good for. well. understanding what his fears are. There's also a fear toxin scene in Batman: Orphans, but i'll just reblog the post i made of it so u don't have to read that one. The art is fun, the story is weird and just kinda. meh.

#60 is when Dick joins the force. The beginning of the end, so to speak, but we don't meet Catalina until #71.

#93 is That Issue. The infamous rape scene. The thing about his time with Catalina is that it was almost definitely meant to be explored for what it was- an abusive relationship. But DC wanted Nightwing in an event. It doesn't have any satisfactory end, Bruce (DC) calls Dick to fight in Gotham. He does. His story falls to the wayside for the bigger title. The worst thing that can happen to a DC character IMO is getting a Batman crossover. There was supposed to be an entire arc dedicated to what would happen to Dick in this abusive relationship. But we got 2 issues. And War Games. It pisses me off to absolutely no end. DC needed more mouths to kiss the ground that Batman walks on. They don't give a damn about the stories that exist outside their cash cow.

After all that, eventually Dick is back to his utterly depressing life. He joins the mob, finds a family, bad things happen to said family. (Mobbed Up, #107-111) He wants to protect the daughter, Sophia Tevis, and then Slade holds Sophia hostage to get Dick to teach his daughter Rose how to fight. He does, but he also teaches Rose how to question authority (aka her dad). Slade is not happy about that, and nukes Bludhaven. (Renegade, #112-117) See my earlier note about IRL reasons for dumbass plot points.

Nightwing 1996 has 2 annual issues (despite running for much longer than 2 years). The first annual is a fun murder mystery and i think a good look into how Dick handles relationships. He also reads as very aromantic/demiromantic who doesn't know it yet, but maybe that's just me, lol. the second annual is dog shit. Mark Andreyko can get bent, it sucked total ass and isn't worth reading.

i love that first question because it kind of makes you look at yourself and consider strengths in yourself that you wouldn’t normally, or that you might not appreciate yourself? idk just in the sense that people who love us usually see things in us that we sometimes miss and i feel like it’s kind of beautiful to try and see through their eyes.

anyway, sentimentality aside. from his pov, i think he probably views me as smarter than i think i am. he fills in the gaps, like where i might doubt my capabilities he has faith in me unquestionably to meet a goal or do a certain thing or even to handle myself. i think it’s really reassuring to have that implicit trust and confidence that he views me as both intelligent and capable in all things.

i think he likes that i’m hopeful and trying my best. it takes a lot of courage sometimes for me to do basic things and i think he loves that at the end of the day even if it’s difficult i still try. i think another favourite thing of his is probably how freely i talk around him? it’s that thing of when you’ve been in someone’s life for so long, and seen them through so many stages of their life, you kind of stop caring about the little things and start extending your trust to them. so i think he likes that i trust him with not just the big serious things but also the smaller, inconsequential stuff like just letting myself exist in his space without worrying all the time. does this even make sense ??

i think i do have alternative aus!! they’re very fleeting and not so fleshed out because they’re more daydreams than anything, but i do love like. putting the both of us in old romances and fairytale esque stuff? like sleeping beauty, swan lake, a royal au with him as the head of my guards <3 they’re just fun to think about but they’re not specific to him, i cycle through the other blorbos i have depending on who better fits whatever mood i’m currently in LOL

Hello!!! i’m so interested in the HB2 plot! I feel like we see peter angst way more commonly than Harley—so if you ever feel up for rambling about it under a cut or a spoiler tag this is a free space to do so! okay anyway sorry to what the ask was actually about pfkfj, HARLEY!!! i agree it’s definitely a lot easier to come across peter angst than harley angst, which most likely has to do with the fact that there is a LOT of material to draw from for peter’s character—various movies, comics, shows, timelines and universes and the games. it’s a lot easier to come up with angst for peter because there’s a lot of canon angst to choose from AND there’s so much content for him that it’s a lot easier to get a grasp on his character and create angst based on that, you know? but as a fandom we have definitely created many ideas of harley based on when he was a kid in im3 and his cameo in endgame, plus the WEB comics + ride at avengers campus, so harley angst is for sure out there but like you said it is NOT easy to come across lmao

as for the HB2 plot—i have an ask in my drafts from like a month or two ago asking for more information about hb2 and i’m gonna try to finally finish answering that and post it sometime today, so that post will definitely include some insight in what to expect from the sequel, but harley in hb2 specifically? i GOTCHU.

so homeward bound, as i've said before, is PETER'S story post no way home, right? but in hb2 it's peter AND HARLEY'S story post homeward bound. the first chapter is a recap of the first fic from harley's pov with a lot of extra bits thrown in, starting on the day that thanos first snapped and ending either where the first fic ends or maybe in the summer between school years. unsure as of now but one of those, for sure. so that's going to offer a lot of perspective about harley's character in homeward bound - his thought processes, how he was feeling in a lot of key moments during the first fic, things he was doing while peter wasn't around, etc etc etc.

but in hb2, after the recap in the first fic, it picks up at the start of their second year at ESU. he might still be roommates with harry. he might not be. it won't be the same room at the very least, so no matter what, there's going to be some changes, right? but also:

everything is different.

there are the small changes - not the same room, harder classes as they climb their way through the pre-reqs, potentially a different roommate, some stuff happened over summer, etc.

but also there are the BIG changes, like his dynamic with peter, and knowing that peter is spidey and now being a part of keeping that a secret due to peter not wanting anyone else to know. he also knows about the spell and he knows that peter is someone tony loved, someone that pepper and morgan and happy and rhodey knew and cared about, and none of them remember him, but they know harley.

with harley's pov comes the reintroduction of the rest of the world, basically. peter has no one, right? his old life was completely destroyed and erased, leaving no connections to the people he used to know, so he's been VERY closed off from everyone and everything.

harley, however, still knows pepper and morgan and happy and rhodey. he still talks to them on a regular basis. he has his mom and his sister. he isn't closed off in classes like peter is, actually having conversations with his classmates, even if he has no interest in befriending them. peter's pov has been very limited because his world has been completely changed. harley's has been changed too via the loss of tony and him being dead for five years while his mom and his sister had to adapt to a life without him there, but it's not been changed to the extent of peter's, you know?

harley is going to have a few struggles in hb2, some centered around peter, some not. there's going to be family stuff. there's going to be this urge to tell pepper and them about peter because he thinks that peter would benefit from having these people in his life again but also he wants to respect the fact that peter doesn't feel ready to do that.

there's going to be some conflict about the people in his life learning that he's involved with spider-man's business somehow. there's going to be people getting angry at spider-man because of it.

a lot of mental and emotional turmoil is going to come out of all this. but, in the physical sense, he's not going to be entirely safe, either. again, people are going to realize he's somehow connected to spidey. he's going to want to do whatever he can do to help peter, to the point where he's going to get a little reckless with it sometimes.

caught in the crossfire? yeah.

hostage situation? no. at least, not in hb2. not that i currently have planned. that could change, but as of my current plans, no.

hope that's enough information to build some intrigue >:)

*aggressively whips out my PowerPoint presentation* WHY I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED NONNY!!!! so crazy that you would ask me that omg it’s not like I specifically begged people to ask me about it or anything-

As you may have noticed, recently I started playing in my very first dnd campaign, and Dimitri Kazriel is my character!! He’s a chaotic neutral tiefling warlock - (except, like, on all levels except physical he is a rogue, because he honestly should be one based on his whole personality and backstory but uhhhh he’s a warlock okay).

here are some various sketches of him!!! (ignore the fact that his design keeps changing slightly lmao)

Now the fun thing about our campaign is that it’s actually set in the realm of Norse mythology, with pretty much all the kingdoms and lore and stuff completely home-brewed by our incredible DM who is literally descended from Vikings (or so he says, lmao). So, Dimitri’s warlock patron is actually Loki, the god of mischief himself!!

He grew up as a thief on the streets, but he eventually made a deal with Loki and basically just became his little errand-boy-slash-spy-slash-mischief-maker in exchange for magical power and security.

But there’s a bit of a conflict going on in the campaign now when it comes to this arrangement… the thing is, Loki is planning something that I don’t really know about, but Dimitri’s been doing his job as a lil errand boy. Butttt ummmm well. Odin the Allfather himself decided to talk to Dimitri and offer him a different deal to go behind Loki’s back and work for Odin instead, in exchange for essentially taking over Loki’s position and getting a shit ton of power. Butttt of course Loki found out and was not happy… so now there’s tension between Dimitri and Loki, there’s a whole complicated thing with Odin, Dimitri doesn’t know who to chose, he’s scared of Loki’s wrath and meanwhile my poor guy still does not have a clue what the Big Plans far beyond him even are.

Sooooo Dimitri’s whole thing, essentially, is being used as a tiny pawn between these two gods, a minuscule player on a giant fucking chess board that he doesn’t understand :D

And that’s not even getting into his newly created backstory, which is a whole other can of worms… but I’ve already rambled enough so if anyone wants to hear about that…… let me know 👁️👁️

I've been a huge Iron Fist fan for a while, so I'll throw my hat in the ring!

1. My first introduction was actually the Ultimate Spider Man cartoon series, where Danny was played by Greg Cipes, the same actor as Teen Titans' Beast Boy and TMNT 2012's Mikey. With those two already being my favorites, I was hooked on the voice and fell in love with his laid back but wise portrayal in that show. (The first couple seasons are genuinely really good, don't come at me)

2. My personal favorite adaptation/run is torn between Power Man and Iron Fist (2016) (I ADORE the somewhat messy/chunky art style) and Iron Fist The Living Weapon from 2014, which was actually my first ever Iron Fist comic. A HEAVY jump from his portrayal in USM, but I can understand why they changed his backstory for a children's television series lol.

3. My favorite characters are, unsurprisingly, Danny Rand and Luke Cage. Both insanely powerful in their own right, both dealt a shitty hand by fate albeit in very different ways, and both absolutely dedicated to making the best of the world they live in. They play off of each other in such a satisfying way, and I often really appreciate the subversion of expectations, making the Big Heavy Bruiser the serious one of the duo, and the Zen Kung Fu Master the idiot he has to keep on a leash. Heroes for Hire and Defenders also hold a special place, just because I love to see my boys interact with other heroes and let their unique personalities shine.

4. I think my favorite thing about Iron Fist, other than having absolutely kickass powers, is who he is as a character. No matter which Iron Fist it is, this applies to Lin Lie as well (Love u bbygrl), holding the title of THE Iron Fist really carries a certain amount of weight. How the hero carries that weight, that title, says a lot about them. Danny left his life behind, was shaped by K'un Lun, molded into this perfect "Immortal Weapon", and yet... When he returns to the outside world, he's still kind. Still giving. Still caring. The horrors he's seen, the abuse he's been through, the otherworldly power coursing through his veins; he will still drop everything to help someone who needs it. Lin Lie, in the limited exposure I've had to him, had the Iron Fist somewhat thrust upon him after his blade was destroyed as Sword Master. He has a goal. A cause. Collect the shards and stop them from manifesting into demons and stuff (yikes). He's a young man with experience and cultural ties in the supernatural, only to be thrown even deeper into this spiritual power and have to grapple with what that means and what that title carries. Ugh I LOVE it.

PLEASE give me more Iron Fist reading recommendations. Series he's appeared in. Hell, I'm even playing limited amounts of Marvel Rivals just to support Iron Fist and Adam Warlock's continued inclusion in Marvel media. Am I a little bummed it's Lin Lie and not Danny? A little, but Danny isn't the Iron Fist right now so it makes sense. Lin Lie still goes hard and his design is GORGEOUS in that animation style. 15/10 no notes.

Anyone can be the Iron Fist. All it takes is training, dedication, and maybe being able to beat a whole ass dragon in a fist fight.

He's like the reincarnation of another dude Sir Aaron (I liked them both OK? Little me was wild) and the reason why I had a Lucario obsession

here's not a lot of story with him but with the person who showed it to me

Basically I had a crush on my best friend who was like 4 years older but he was so nice and liked to draw, play video games etc he made me wanna start learning about anatomy and to take drawing a step further (he made like 3 or 4 drawings for me, that was peak love language)

I admired him but I know I looked at him with heart eyes from time to time 😅😅😭😑 cringe cuz he liked another girl 🤡 anyway he liked Cynthia so it was like an exchange of "who's your trainer crush"

Now that I think about it my first ever fanfiction or like fan writing was something I started to do with him (it was an "isekai" story that involved the two of us, I would write one chapter he the next one and so on)

Ufff this made me nostalgic

So Quinoa more than a blorbo is like my nostalgia character, when I used to crush on real people (lol)

Please take this as an offense but I am absolutely fascinated by your current obsession with Buster Keaton and went back through your account to figure out what rabbit hole led to this but couldn't figure it out. If you're okay with sharing can you tell me the rabbit hole that led to this?

OFFENS TAKEN no but okay it's really kind of dumb. this past january someone reblogged a buster keaton post, i assume a stunts gifset because those get numbers, and i hit up his tag on a whim to see what was what.

now, at the time i was writing an OC character for star wars. and while i knew just about everything else important about this character, i didn't have a clear idea of what he looked like. but i was scrolling through pics of this old-timey comedian and it slowly dawned on me: my character looks kind of like buster keaton. official facecast made.

and honestly, that's why i came back to the tag a second time. if it hadn't been for that association, i probably would have forgotten about buster and moved on. but, once a month or so i'd jump back in the buster keaton tag, refresh my memory on my OC's face situation, and then jump back out.

till eventually i guess it hit critical mass, and all of a sudden in late may i'm hitting up the buster tag… because i'm thirsty for buster. i pretty clearly remember a series of gifsets around The General that made me go "…damn, son."

gonna wax rhapsodic here for a bit. let's get the most obvious point out of the way: buster keaton is pretty. he's got cheekbones and big eyes and a profile to die for. and he's ripped, because he's a goddamn acrobat. like, his vastus medialis continually makes me go "that can't be real." also, he's a short king. a small little guy. 5'5", and perfectly willing to make jokes about it—and that kind of security is hotter than the surface of the sun.

he's also ridiculously funny. he made his career on that, you'd kind of hope he would be; but specifically it's funny to me. his sense of humor matches mine perfectly: wry, ironic, a touch of the absurd/surrealistic, leaning to black humor, and with minimal use of sticky substances or stupidity. i have so much trouble with modern comedy because 90% of the time it's just so dumb. buster keaton movies are not dumb. his hero is a clever little shithead—if somewhat naive and literal-minded—with abysmal luck, who gets into awkward situations and does his clever best to get himself back out. i vibe with it.

and then obvs his stunts. the more of his movies i watch the more i mutter "how did he not die?" and "is he made of rubber bands and cotton balls??" his physicality is so satisfying to watch, and not just in a prurient way (tho i am definitely also watching in a prurient way). this is a man with supreme control over his body and a thorough understanding of physical comedy. he was pulling out pratfalls well into his 60s, yo.

and the more of his movies i watch (especially in comparison to roscoe arbuckle's movies), the more i appreciate how good of a filmmaker he was. he let the story do the talking, rather than clutter up the screen with intertitles. his precise use of camera angles, the astonishingly good cinematography, the use of the camera itself to sell a gag (i.e. the dream sequence in Sherlock, Jr.). i saw a letterboxd review call The General "mad max fury railroad" and i haven't been able to get that out of my head, because y e a h, his editing was as precise as margaret sixel's. i watched "One Week" after watching all of the arbuckle shorts he was in, and lemme tell you, my third eye was blown wide open. "oh," i said to myself. "i get why people call him a genius."

and from a frothing fangirl perspective, he has built in artificial scarcity. his smile is rare, his voice is rare, shirtless scenes are rare. (in reality, none of these things are particularly hard to find in his films, but like i say to everyone who sits still long enough for me to yammer at them, their perceived scarcity makes them so much more compelling. when you hear him say "pass" in Sunset Boulevard you quiver like you're catching sight of ankles in the 1800s). it encourages thirsting.

@bendwill : Elder scrolls blogs are few and far between, but Miraak is absolutely one of those characters that deserves to be more written out. @lunarrepel : Shadowheart my beloved. The aesthetics, writing, dialog, everything you do with her is SO on point and I can't get over it. I was already biased and liked her after Larian adjusted her a bit during the beta phase of BG3 but still. Man you just nail her and I'm so excited to develop these two out. They give wine aunt energy and THAT alone gives me so much life.

@dreadgloom / @cinderschild : I wont lie to you I was GIDDY when I found out you wrote a WoTR character. I honestly expected that fandom to have more of a presence on tumblr but I'll take what small fanclub we can get right?? And also can I comment on the takes you have from Salvatore are absolutely genius and play really well into WoTC's drow?? Genuinely fantastic worldbuilding and it's always a pleasure to see you crop up on the dash.
