#spirit of christmas was filmed with the intention of it being the final episode#but bc of the schedule they released it at it had to go first#so yes#harpers locket being first makes sense. simply because of the line at the beginning#where chris says that last week they did more horse#which obvs doesn’t really make sense when it’s in the middle and you’re pretending it’s live#so it being first makes so much more sense for that gag via @the-irrelevant-trumpeter
yeah! I think Mischief's original intention was to have Harper's Locket first and Spirit of Christmas last. There seemed to be some airing conflict so the show wasn't able to premiere before Christmas but the BBC still wanted a Christmas episode so that messed up the episode order. Furthermore, in the episode description of A Trial to Watch, apparently there is something with Dennis's grandma and a legal contract that requires Dennis to have a certain amount of lines. So that's why Dennis got to be the main character in Trial but then in the later episodes he gets less lines
ideal viewing order for goes wrong show season 1 IMO is
harper's locket (a strong enough episode to be a solid introduction, while also effectively introducing the basic concept of the show)
the pilot (not the pilot) (can't be the first episode in order for the "not the pilot" jokes to land)
a trial to watch (deviates a bit from the basic form with the set changes, so it's better for it to come after a few more traditional episodes. dennis taking on a starring role is funnier after the audience knows his proclivity for playing animals and inanimate objects)
the lodge (one of the weaker episodes of series one, in my opinion, though by no means bad—best for it to be sandwiched in the middle)
90 degrees (the most ambitious episode of series one, and a fun faux-finale)
the spirit of christmas (it makes the most sense as a series closer, imo—a sort of festive celebration. plus the easter eggs and references to previous episodes)

Few queer arcs annoy me more than the "I'm straight with one (1) exception" one. Almost as insulting as the Pink Kryptonite type of shit.
I whined about this very thing back when I watched s3, but quickly let it go, because I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer for the fans who did like it.
But nobody cares now and I'm rewatching s1 so...
S3 was a drag and only watchable (to me) because of Paleta; how she sold a woman in love.
The show messed the fake dating thing up (HOW? Virgin teenagers have executed this concept better on AO3, damn it), failed Mariana by not giving us her POV (although the weak acting didn't help matters either) and failed Ana too.
They did the ensemble thing and wasted valuable time on inane subplots. Literally, who gave a fuck about Pablo's friends? Conrado was funny exactly one (1) time and that's when he sang in drag because he was drunk.
Know your audience. Predominantly queer people (nationally and internationally) were supporting your Netflix show. Conservative heterosexuals boycotted it because it had "feminist/LGBT propaganda" and "favored mothers over fathers."
The result was--that even though s3 was longer than s2--Ana, the lead, didn't have enough time to explore her sexuality.
But still, they could have taken advantage of the fact they had Alma, Ana's mean/gossipy childhood friend, say that Ana has had a vibe since they were teens. (There's no smoke without fire.) That was in 1.03 when we, the audience, still thought Ana was straight. (At least, she didn't ping to me until later.)
They could have gone for bi Ana--what I thought they were doing in late season 1. It was clear that even though Ana didn't give a fuck that Mariana was bi, she didn't quite understand bisexuality herself.
"Who wouldn't want you? If I were a guy, I'd fuck you." (to make her friend feel better about her postpartum body) "I'm not a lesbian." (multiple times) Sure, but your bestie isn't one either and yet she still wants you.
(Side note: "You'd be surprised how many gay women I've heard that from.")
They could have gone for latebloomer lesbian in denial Ana--what I thought they were doing in most of season 2, because, hey, they would not stop using the word "lesbian."
Then I realized they were doing the classic "We dare not name bisexuality" until finally, finally Tere defended her own daughter in s3.
"My daughter is gay. Or bi. Idk, I love her."
At least, they didn't say that Ana and Mariana were "flexible" (TGW, I'm side-eyeing you) because "post radical queerness."
Smh creative teams think they're being progressive when telling the community that not using a label is a virtue.
If you're a cis straight liberal/progressive and say, "Labels don't matter," then you're not being honest with yourself. Because your label is "normal" to the rest of society.
Without any labels, there would be no LGBTQ+ community. Whose rights would people be fighting for exactly?
We're nowhere near close to the point that people no longer need to identify their community. Even in relatively liberal societies where gay marriage is legal and anti-discrimination laws exist, queer people continue to be marginalized and oppressed.
And I know that queer people do the post-label thing too, but things there get more complicated. Why? Because many queer people are in the closet, many are busy figuring their shit out, dealing with comphet and internalized stuff.
And it's not like being queer absolves you of having regressive beliefs either, e.g., there are gay people who are biphobic and/or transphobic etc.

🎬 Best of Trevor in The Goes Wrong Show Series 2!⛓️
Everybody's favourite stage manager - Cornley's beloved Trevor Watson! He was featured in more episodes and (in my opinion) humiliated himself less as compared to series 1. Although I do think he got more sadistic this time around..... Enjoy this short compilation!

love it when you spend hours going through all the goes wrong media for clips for an edit, and then you review them and find out half of them are pixelated as hell because they’re bootleg copies.

I am happy to let you know that S2E1, The Nativity, is already out on BBC iPlayer! (if you don’t have access to that, I am more than happy to share a Google Drive link to it and the rest of the episodes)
Furthermore, Mischief Theatre (the people behind The Goes Wrong Show) are going to livestream their improv show, Mischief Movie Night In, all around the world starting on July 1st, 2021! You can find more info and get tix here :)
this scene from the goes wrong show where they cast two different people as the head and hunky, semi-nude body of the same character during a live theatre production haunts my every waking moment

Art in The Good Fight and (The Good Wife) - Part 1
as promised, i am resharing some of my art threads from twitter over here. to recap, as a history major and art nerd, i have always loved looking at the art shown in the sets of period drama, but it was really striking to me how obviously intentional it was being used to assist in telling story in The Gilded Age (plus Impressionist lover Mrs Sylvia Chamberlain was just begging for it).
while part of it is about identifying the art because i do love an easter egg, the other part i find really interesting is thinking about how art reflects character and story. so, i started thinking more about art in The Good Fight/The Good Wife, and i started a twitter thread and it became a season long thing this year for the final season.
this post is part 1 of 2 about the art in The Good Fight/The Good Wife, and in particular, Diane Lockhart's impeccable art taste. so, without further ado...
this is my hands down fav, which is in Diane's Boseman/Reddick office in TGF, Girl with Peony by Andy 'Zig' Leipzig 🔥
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i adore the surrealism and guess what i found? sunflowers of course 🌻🌀🌻 this is Andy 'Zig' Leipzig's Have a Heart, 2014.
Tumblr media
in Diane's old apartment in TGW era, the engraving on the right is by Jean-Pierre Louis Laurent Houël, Vase cineraire et figures antiques (1782, Gennadius Library).
Tumblr media
the left looks like Bougainvillea, Parivolia, Italy by Isabelle De Borchgrave (watercolour).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is not Diane's, this is Sweeney's, but i have never been able to find this still life from TGW 419, which is a shame because it is GORGEOUS.
Tumblr media
in the McHart apartment post TGF s2, there's an engraving by French artist Jean Louis Prévost, Flowers & Fruit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
behind Kurt and more clearly here is a French Watercolour Landscape (distributed by Soicher Marin gallery).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are also a few pieces in the bathroom, including some botanical prints visible only in the mirror. and this one above the fireplace, A Rainy Day, by an unknown American Continental School artist (20C, oil on canvas).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'll be back next week on Thursday (aka missing TGF more than usual hours) for the rest of my thread, which focused on the art in s6 and was possibly more intentional than the rest of The Good Universe put together.

Highlights from Nancy's Instagram Live
A short compilation of the funny moments from Nancy's live (13 Nov 2021). Few notes from the wonderful 30 minutes live:
A character she messed around with (a misogynist dude) during A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong ended up being her character (Wycombe) in The Pilot (Not the Pilot)
Is the bread lusty today? Of course!
Henry Lewis is currently upstairs with a wasabi
FIRE ALARM TEST
First time with a understudy this run (Christian James in the role of The Blade)
Scott is creeping around on their phone
Her tip for improv: don't be afraid to physically throw your body around
Henry Lewis is indeed very funny
She loves getting the 'unglamorous' parts, and she's never recognised on the tube (subway/train)
She discussed a bit about the struggles women in comedy face, and often how playing the role of a man takes away the sexualisation of the body and the audience will hence laugh more
It was Greg who played Norman Lord in Annie's farce! Greg really got nude for that scene and she finds it hilarious that they still bleeped him out (including his face)
Charlie really said rude things during the farce to ensure that it will be bleeped out
Greg actually learnt how to juggle knifes and ride a unicycle! The studio sent him the stuff and he learnt in about 3 months
Her least favourite The Goes Wrong Show is 90 Degrees because she just had a C-section
During the Royal Variety in 2015, Henry Shields tried to write in a scene where he and Kylie Minogue but she didn't want to do it
There's many people lining up to kiss Henry Shields and Kylie Minogue just isn't one of them
Before she joined Mischief, she was directing music videos
Her favourite Mischief Movie Night In moment: she really doesn't remember anything
Many jokes in TGWS S2 about how Annie can't act and she thinks it's a dig from the writers
About Mischief breaking: Charlie corpses, Hen laughs until he wipes the smile off his whole face, Shields and Bryony are hard to break
She think Chris is the better director between Chris and Robert
Musical Goes Wrong? She thinks yes please
She'll happily reprise the role of Annie in The Play That Goes Wrong
No rivalry between Annie and Vanessa
Don't know about a Christmas special this year
Something to look out for: She and Dave always try for a sneaky fistbump/high five during filming TGWS
She enjoys the gag of Greg (Jonathan) being constantly cut off
Best memories from the Edinburgh fringe: living in a 3-bedroom house with 13 people, she slept in between Jonathan Sayer and Josh Elliot, and Jon used to sing a cute song before going to sleep
Why is she such a legend? Funny parents, and being small helps
She owns a fridge
youtube
(Small note: Mischief did not upload the full playback on their account, possibly due to audio issues. If it's still not uploaded yet by the next week or so I'll upload the full live to my Youtube channel.)
