-sam would get jack into the cart (jack just teleports in) and then pushes him down the aisles super fast. he loved doing it with dean as a kid and now he gets to do it with jack. they nearly run over dean at one point and dean tells them off for it, calling them a public nuisance ("like you're one to talk" "shut UP sam") and as revenge they wait until dean and cas are standing right next to each other and run at dean like they're jousting. dean falls trying not to get run over, into cas who is ofc an Angelic Tank and doesn't even flinch when he catches dean. cue the most flustered man in existence in front of the knock-off cereal brands bc my god he never learned to emotionally regulate.

-you would think sam and dean would be the ones arguing about healthy vs tasty food. wrong. sam knows his brother is a stubborn ass and just sneaks healthy food into the cart. (he has a system. he also has a farmer's market he runs off to once in a while.) dean and CAS on the other hand are bickering in every. single. aisle about every. single. item. cas is trying to make sure heart disease doesn't kill the man who refused to kill God. dean is trying to exercise his new found free will. this is flirting for them.

-jack finds an employee restocking an aisle and strikes up a conversation with them. this of course leads to him helping restock a whole section of the aisle because "of course i helped them! i wasn't doing anything else!" eventually they end up seated on the floor criss cross applesauce talking about the DEEPEST MOST RANDOM SHIT. anyways jack likes them so much they win the lottery the next day.

-cas wanders into the freezers because it's "refreshing." dean only realizes this when he pulls a a carton of milk out of the fridge and sees cas staring back at him. he ALMOST pulls out his gun.

-obligatory "sam gets hit on by an older woman" thing but he is ENGAGED and flashes his engagement ring (eileen proposed to him because fuck gender roles because i said so. he cried. dean will deny it but he cried when eileen asked him for sam's hand. gd now i wanna write that. fuck.) anyways this does not stop the older woman and sam sighs. cas rescues him.

-cas accidentally leaves the store with his coat loaded with random stuff. dean sighs and concludes that stealing from a chain grocery store is not the worst thing they've ever done.

-cas sees that the last thing of an item dean wanted sitting in an unattended cart and...takes it out. and gets accosted by a person because yeah that's their cart but cas sacrificed heaven and his life and his wings for humanity (read: singular human but still) and thinks he can have the last jar of strawberry jam. dean hears them from 2 aisles over and sighs.

I mean, isn't it frustrating how talking about Jack turns into either ship-accessorizing, or which stereotyped gender roles get stapled to which character "moms are caretakers and dads are protectors etc etc! character A is nuclear mom and character B is nuclear dad... village what's a village... family can't be that it has to conform", or which dad is best?

It's maddening.

Jack isn't an accessory. He isn't a bargaining chip either. He's complicated and his major relationships are marred by suicide, dangerous powers, murdering civilians, and murdering family. It's not simple, and no one's reactions to him or his plight are simple either AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

trans!marie & trans!jack bouncing around my head right now. like first of all we’re talking about two beings who. do not have the concept of gender beyond what they’ve gleaned from mindreading. there isn’t really a dividing line across their experiences, but there are outside perceptions shaping them.

(something something ive been tossing about in my head you know jack obv little shapeshifter that he is taking sam’s form and marie taking mary’s… they’re both trying to make themselves familiar. unconsciously trying to show that they want to be loved by that. (Jess!lucifer anyone? except Lucifer did it on purpose. For them it’s… less so. maybe more purposeful as time goes on.))

but ANYWAY. my point is. they can look however they want, and when they aren’t being looked at by outside eyes who Expect them to be certain things, Look certain ways. I think they. You know. Swap things about. Mix up features. Two nephilim sitting in a room across from each other staring into each others eyes as they change features, mirror each other and then break forms into something new, learning each other, learning themselves.

(And maybe once or twice forgetting that they’ve established to TFW that they look A Certain Way, and so jack will look like Marie or Marie will look like jack. uncomfortable moment for. probably dean most of all. that he can’t actually tell them apart (making his Issues about putting a dividing line of good and evil between them Worse))

Dean is a little weirded out by being a chick- but damn he’s hot, and he knows it’s temporary anyway, as soon as Rowena can figure out what exactly Jack did and how to reverse it. Sam and Eileen take the changes in stride as something new to explore with each other. Jack seems just as comfortable with this new gender presentation as he did before, and keeps reminding Dean and Cas of Claire. Castiel, on the other hand, finds it really uncomfortable. It doesn’t make sense to him- he’s had female vessels before, and he’s never had these issues with it- but the longer they go without breaking the spell, the more he wants to crawl out of his vessel like an ill-fitting skin.

Real talk though I prefer calling Sam his dad. I don't really like the whole "Sam's a mom" thing. Like Sam can still be nice and kind and loving as a father. Not all moms are kind and nice etc trust me I know, my mother is not a good person.

!!!!! some fan asked alcal if sam is jack’s mom and he basically said he doesn’t understand why there has to be gender roles on being nurturing or whatever, and i agree. plus, exactly! it kinda goes into this weird area to me that is all fathers are bad patriarchs and abusive and controlling while all mothers are safe and loving which just isn’t true? besides, this also comes from the same fandom that hates mary winchester and ignores rowena’s abuse. there are flawed parental figures everywhere. sam is also flawed! half the time people forget that sam was standing right next to dean when he did something shitty but i digress lol. not to mention, there’s only one tfw member that’s surfing mommy blogs and it’s not sam. they all have their strengths and weaknesses as fathers, but they’re all still his fathers. sam can be kind and loving and be his father, like??? and in general, i don’t understand the urge to say sam is his mom. especially because kelly died to give birth to him. she’s the only person jack calls his mom.

not sure if I’ve ever made a post about this before but the idea of jack being non-binary is truly so perfect for so many reasons. firstly he’s always existed in this taboo gray area between two rigid/opposing binaries (human/angel ; good/evil ; mother/father)

and there’s also some gendering in those binaries if you squint hard enough but I’m not a fervent genderstudiesnatural expert

neither side of these binaries can fully accept that jack is a sum of their parts (for lack of better phrasing); Lucifer and AU Michael both view his humanity as a weakness/malfunction or a phase he’ll mature out of, and several hunters—namely AU Bobby—treat Jack’s angelic heritage like the equivalent of rabies, a ticking time bomb that will inherently and eventually go off. of course everyone can acknowledge that jack is a Nephil in his own right, but he’s still viewed specifically as two halves instead of one Whole being. it’s probably worth adding that he literally will die or become a megalomaniac if he isn’t a mix of his two halves

then, jack is also exceptionally morally gray. frankly the writing of the show doesn’t fully portray this well, and while he does openly position himself as a Good Guy and a Hero and aspire to be such,…. So did the rest of tfw and look at all the shit under their belt. They’re antiheroes at best but that’s another post

lastly, there’s a very common experience among queer autistic people called gender indifference, which is exactly what it sounds like. We just..don’t care about gender. there’s no strong attachment between it and our identity. I know what I am biologically but I literally don’t feel it, so I wouldn’t and haven’t cared if I was misgendered. and I think for jack, someone who deals with the weight of being this archaic nebulous creature while having an extremely new relatively-human body, there would be similar feelings of disconnection and indifference.

also, whenever people ask him what/who he is the answer is literally always “I’m Jack.” like. That’s it. That’s the sum of it. he’s not entirely good or bad or human or archangel; he’s not 100% kelly or Lucifer. he’s just jack :3c

Last day of Denver con rolls in as supernatural trends at this hellsite cursed with it. Fans trend a few hashtags on birdapp as well through the course of the day. Misha and Alex' and Jared's panels take place. Day FAR more calm than yesterday

Misha tweets very well thought out response to fandom reaching out on behalf of fan who's question yesterday has been interrupted

During the Misha and Alex panel majority of minor revelations come from Misha. Asked about Cas' confession says that he knows how Cas felt at that moment, conveyed it as best as he could, is content with it. But he will not interpret it or clarify it. Becaues he thinks it's not the actor's, but audience's role. Says that it was not his intention from the start to play Cas as on the autism spectrum. He played a creature baffled by humans and odd and thought all the angels will be like that but noone followed through. But he likes that people on the spectrum can relate and now thinks about Cas as somewhere on the spectrum as well. He also says that he wanted to watch last two episodes as a fan so he haven't read the scripts. Says that WHEN they do the reboot he'd like for TFW reunion to be one of first scenes (a throwaway line. But even in those throwaway lines it is nit the question of if but when). Alex says that he liked about Jack that sexuality and gender never crossed his mind. Never mattered. And in the year of our lord 2021 Jack would go by they/them pronouns

Jared's panel is smooth-sailing - he says some nice things about Sam that even make sence for once - but ends in a typical supernatural fashion. With disappointment that is. okay so imagine a day in the bunker, when dean has been making ("increasingly stale", says sam) jokes about it for weeks, and cas finally sits down with jack to give the nephilim the 'bird and the bees' talk.

but instead of sexuality — because at home, jack's three — he talks about gender.

imagine cas pointing to himself, nearing the end of the conversation. "jimmy novak was a man. meaning he chose to present as masculine," jack's eyebrows knit in a frown. "and he identified with male specific pronouns."

jack's frown clears.

jack prefers the clearer definitions — pronouns are easier than feelings or people, the latter being things jack's bad at already — but cas seems to repeatedly choose to describe genders as vaguely as he can, with jack still understanding.

"so do sam and dean. identify with he/him pronouns, i mean."

"yes." cas nods. "but i hope you know that doesn't mean you have to, too."

jack can't tell why cas's eyes have softened.

"what are...you, castiel?"

"i'm genderless, at the very least. angels have no concept similar to it." this time, there's a distant look in his eyes instead. like he's never this conversation before, but he's thought about it enough. "although if i were to count vessels, which i suppose as someone who's had to be a human in their vessel's shoes ought to, i'd be genderfluid."

"oh."

cas smiles.

"but," jack hesitates. "you use male pronouns too."

"i have no objection to them, and they seem to be the most common assumption based on my appearance." cas tells him. then, after a pause, "but if you were to use different pronouns for me, jack, as long as i'm aware i'm being referred to, i wouldn't mind them at all."

jack nods, absorbing that.

there's another pause, with cas's eyes downcast as if he knows that jack's mind's racing, and is giving jack the space to think about all of it. cas is undoubtedly the most thoughtful in his ways.

(and cas would undoubtedly understand.)

so then jack looks up again, swallowing an unnerving stream of doubts, and softly asks, "what do you think i am?"

cas smiles again, cryptic.

"oh, jack. i think you're the only one who knows."
