I've reread The Forbidden Game several times throughout my teen and young adult years, both in novel form and audiobook, and it's never explicitly said that Julian is older, the same age, or younger than Jenny. However, while scrolling through LJ Smith's official website, I found this tidbit in her summary of the last book in the trilogy, The Kill:

"Child-Julian"

I think his character would've benefited greatly had this been explicitly stated in the book. Otherwise, we're left to assume that Julian's fascination with Jenny mimics other love interests in LJ's works, specifically the much older, Civil-War era Stefon and Damian Salvatore in TVD. I've seen people critique Julian for being fixated on a child while he was presumably a fully-fledged mature Shadowman, but this is not the case.

He was, in a way, a young child rescued by Jenny when she opened the closet door all those years ago; no fucking wonder he fell in love at first sight. He's deep in puppy love.

I will never understand that Tom Locke ended up with Jenny at the end of the Forbidden Game trilogy... Although, I think that if L.J Smith had ended up writing a 4th volume, they would not have ended up together, but the fact The fact that this is the case annoys me. I have nothing against the fact that Jenny doesn't end up with Julian, but she ends up with Tom, I am against it. Not as horrible as Alina ending up with Mal, because at least Tom has positively evolved but just... he's a boring character for me. I hope the series that adopts the trilogy takes liberties and ends Jenny & Julian together, or just doesn't end with Tom.

100% agree about the end of TFG. Just finished today and omg it will have a chokehold on me forever. Yeah julian gets a bit of redemption but like……… he deadass tried to torture her and her friends :/ he’s hot to fantasize about but ljsmith would have the BIGGEST shitstorm if she had made Jenny end up with Julian. 1. Do you have any pets? If so, what species, and what are their names?

I have one. A cavalier king charles spaniel, named Amber. I did not name her after me. She’s a rescue. My dad got her for my 21st birthday, and picked her because we have the same name.

I live with my nan and pop who have a jack russel cross pomeranian puppy, too.

2. Your favorite place that you’ve traveled to?

I hate travelling... I get motion sickness just going to the shops sometimes... and I haven’t actually done a lot of travelling anyway. But if I had to pick, it would probs be... Dalwallinu. It’s the small country town 3 hours north of the city. I lived in for a few years. My mum’s there now. There isn’t really much to do there- like, at all- but the drive consists of nothing but the company with you, and a few small towns here and there.

And when I say nothing, I mean nothing. Empty fields, bush land, desert and all those Australian things people fear. It’s dry, dead, hot and dangerous.

3. What are you currently reading?

Fanfictions. All my books are in boxes at my dad’s- who lives three hours south of where I am. Plus, I do more writing than reading these days.

4. One thing that you’re currently looking forward to?

Exams finishing. They start in a week or so, and I seriously cannot wait for it all to be over so I can spend two months doing nothing but writing.

5. Where do you hopefully see yourself in 5 years?

Studying psychology still. I want to be doing my honours, while also teaching psych to undergrads. I’m also hoping I’ll be living in an apartment closer to campus, and hopefully I’ll have someone to share the apartment with.

6. Your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Cookies and cream. My nan isn’t allowed to buy it, because I’ll eat straight out of the container, and I won’t stop until it’s finished.

7. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve ever received... came from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

‘You gotta learn to love yourself, before you can let someone else love you.’

8. Favorite brand/chain/type of coffee?

I hate coffee. Even the smell. I’m a tea girl! My favourite brand of tea? Madame Flavour. Her green, pear and jasmine tea is incredible! I’m actually enjoying a cup of it right now.

9. One thing you never leave home without?

I can literally walk out of the house with nothing but the clothes on my back and shoes on my feet. I can leave my phone, purse and keys at home if I don’t need them... so... nothing?

10. Name 3 things (can be physical, emotional, etc.) that you love about yourself.

I had to do this question last because it’s the hardest. This is where Buffy’s advice comes to work... because I don’t exactly love myself yet... but here I go anyway.

My brains. Before I started university I thought I was stupid. Turns out I’m actually kinda smart.

My creativity. Think I would’ve gone insane if it wasn’t for my love of making things- especially making my stories.

Oddly enough, my surgery scars. After nearly ten years of horrible and sometimes hospitalising knee problems, I had two knee reconstructions, and I love the scars that were left behind because they’re a reminder that all my pain is in the past.

11. If you were to recommend one published book/series for me to read, what would it be?

Now, I know you said one, but I’ve got two. Dark Visions and The Forbidden Game, both written by my favourite author, L.J. Smith. Seriously think you’ll love DV’s Gabriel, and TFG’s Julian!

Do you think The Forbidden Game (or at least just Julian) was inspired by Labyrinth &/or Jareth?

I can't speak for LJ Smith, but I mean...

Book One Julian and Jareth do have a lot of similarities, like when Julian talks to Jenny in the basement of the paper house, trying to convince her to stay and let him love her the way he wants to. And TFG was written years after Labyrinth's theatrical release, so it wouldn't surprise me if LJ took some inspiration from David Bowie's enigmatic performance.

Plus, both fae/demon characters have an outrageous fashion sense, so there's that.
