Audrey Myers, Dee Eliade, and Jenny Thornton, everyone
The issue with many posts about platonic relationships in fiction is a lot of them conclude with the assumption that in order for people to care more about friendship, they need to learn that it's just as important or deep as romantic/familial/etc relationships.
Really i think if you want friendship to be explored more, you gotta write about all the ways it can be volatile and weird. We often act like love triangles can only exist as cheap romance plot, as if "friendship love triangles" with two people who hate eachother needing to coexist for a third mutual friend isnt a real phenomina.

"If Darkness had taken on a face and a voice, if the powers of night had gathered themselves together and formed themselves into a human being, they would have made something like Julian." The Forbidden Game, L.J. Smith.

I've reread The Forbidden Game several times throughout my teen and young adult years, both in novel form and audiobook, and it's never explicitly said that Julian is older, the same age, or younger than Jenny. However, while scrolling through LJ Smith's official website, I found this tidbit in her summary of the last book in the trilogy, The Kill:
Tumblr media
"Child-Julian"
I think his character would've benefited greatly had this been explicitly stated in the book. Otherwise, we're left to assume that Julian's fascination with Jenny mimics other love interests in LJ's works, specifically the much older, Civil-War era Stefon and Damian Salvatore in TVD. I've seen people critique Julian for being fixated on a child while he was presumably a fully-fledged mature Shadowman, but this is not the case.
He was, in a way, a young child rescued by Jenny when she opened the closet door all those years ago; no fucking wonder he fell in love at first sight. He's deep in puppy love.
I could write more, lmk if ya'll want an essay lol

Hello! I hope you’re doing well! I just read your TFG fanfic and saw that you mentioned you’re looking for a beta-reader. Have you already taken an offer?
I am seriously so late to the party (and I am definitely no longer the target demographic for this story—haha), but I just read TFG trilogy in the last month and I have a great need to contribute to this community in a productive manner.
Well, I hope you're reaching out because you liked the fics and not because the writing's so jumbled that you desperately need to fix it for me (I'm only half kidding).
If you're interested, I'd really appreciate a beta reader that could hound my ass to get me to write, check basic grammar, and most importantly, help me tag on AO3. I like writing darker themes (although the piece I'm working on now is more comedic) so I want to make sure I'm tagging all the appropriate triggers and themes so people can block them if needed.
HMU if you're down to clown!

The Forbidden Game has all the hallmarks of a cult classic, sure, but what I really want is a new edition where every so often, we just get the characters looking at all the supernatural tomfoolery going down around them before muttering a small,
". . . Fuck." Or maybe even, "Goddammit." Just some moments of them processing events with a bitter, tired resignation.
And then resume the story. Just as a treat.

Do you think The Forbidden Game (or at least just Julian) was inspired by Labyrinth &/or Jareth?
I can't speak for LJ Smith, but I mean...
Book One Julian and Jareth do have a lot of similarities, like when Julian talks to Jenny in the basement of the paper house, trying to convince her to stay and let him love her the way he wants to. And TFG was written years after Labyrinth's theatrical release, so it wouldn't surprise me if LJ took some inspiration from David Bowie's enigmatic performance.
Plus, both fae/demon characters have an outrageous fashion sense, so there's that.
