is there like a plot to tf2 or do you just make this stuff up wholecloth using them as barbies
tf2 does have plot! youll find it mostly in the mainline tf2 comics, which explain a good chunk of what's actually happened so far that's led to the "modern day" or the timeline the game takes place in.
there are other tidbits of lore in the smaller comics that come with game updates, but those tend to be focused on the characters dealing with the update in question. besides the meet the mercs videos, that's where we get a look into how these characters interact with one another.
that being said, we don't know a lot of big plot things, like why blu team looks exactly like red team. this is where many people start making shit up n playing with what they find interesting !!
so tldr: there's a lot of gaps to fill in tf2's lore but there IS lore, however loose n silly

Headcanon that while Medic was drafted into the Nazi military as a combat medic, he was also immediately kicked out after stealing the skeleton of an extremely important figure to Nazi Germany, being its leader.
This, of course, led to the extremely quick end of World War Two, and thus Soldier fighting for upwards of sixty years after it ended. This is also why communism isn’t mentioned much in the TF2 comics, despite being in the years following WW2, when the Red Scare was still massive in our universe.
The exception is Poopy Joe, who secretly organized the entirety of the Team Fortress 2 lore, and organized nearly every event in the history of mankind so that he could take his place on a throne of moon rock and rule the earth with a mighty iron… fist? are chimpanzee hands still called fists?
anon this is great and all but soldier references communism multiple times in the comics

I do like the ending to the TF2 comics, but it feels so evident that it was heading toward a different ending that I'm dying to hear theories on what it might have been. Penny for your thoughts?
So, this is kind of a difficult one to answer because the sheer amount of time over which the comics were produced means that "the original ending" could have changed way closer to the beginning of the project than the end. But, generally, I think the point at which you can sort of see the pivot towards the comics team realizing that they were going to have to resolve the story unaided was around issue 4 or 5.
I do believe them that something akin to the reveal about the Administrator was always the plan; it's simply too thematically aligned with the game as a whole. But I do think that the original plan probably tied into the space race, references to which have been threaded through TF2 since at least the pyromania update.
This is from the blog post for TF comics 3, which also featured discussion of the team's development of the now-shelved map Asteroid- A map set on some kind of moon base, released in a partially-completed state for testing and feedback purposes. The game mode consisted of hunting and destroying the enemies teams swarm of maintenance robots to charge a reactor to... do something. Speculations on what the lore underpinning this setup would be abounded; I recall people assuming for the sake of simplicity that Grey probably had something to do with the robots. No concrete lore ever materialized because the map dematerialized several years ago, but the effort on display indicates they were planning something with this.
Around this time, multiple assets were added to the game gesturing at some kind of conspiratorial project; The blue Mann co poster in particular has a space-related aesthetic.
Powerhouse, released in 2015, had a couple similar hint assets, again released at a point in the game's lifespan where the devs putting something in the game might actually hint at a future plan;
This is on top of on the existing lore about the Mann Co./TF Industries space program- Doomsday and the sabotaged Poopy Joe launch (later revealed to be the result of Helen swindling the U.S government out of their Australium for at-the-time unknown reasons,) all of which was still a comparatively recent addition to the lore when issue 3 and these posters came out. And, on top of all that, we have the climax of issue 4- the last cache of australium on earth being taken to space by Sniper's birth mother:
In the story as written the New Zealand excursion is pretty weird- it contributes to Sniper's characterization, but otherwise this amounts to an Australium cache introduced and lost in the span of the same issue; fundamentally an odd use of page space if they didn't intend to do something with this.
So, all things considered, the original plan would probably have involved an excursion to, and final showdown in, space. Either The Administrator or Grey Mann might have had a long term goal that was dependent on access to space, necessitating extensive australium access for reasons besides their life extenders; alternatively, they might have all just pursued Sniper's mom up there, the joke ultimately being that everyone wound up stranded in outer space in order to scrape a few more months of pointless life extension off the side of a rocket. The split difference might have been that Grey's grand evil plan involved space-born domination, which Helen wanted to prevent not on moral grounds, but because letting Grey succeed would ruin her plan to torture Zephaniah; this would rhyme with what happens in the story as written, where Grey really did have a conventional evil plan to kill everyone in Australia that got headed off mainly by accident than due to heroic intervention. RD_Asteroid would have released as the centerpiece of a tie-in update, a gameplay tie-in to the story arc.
Can't even begin to guess how Charles Darling and Oliva were supposed to play into all of this. They likely were, though; Charles has a connection to the tangled Mann Family web through Bette Darling, and the whole Saxton Mags resolution felt pinched as hell.
Standing disclaimer that a lot of this is from memory of being in the fandom as all of this was developing- there's likely stuff I've missed or forgotten.
#asks#ask#tf2#team fortress 2#thoughts#meta#the invasion update was speculated to tie into this somehow but that was one of several nothingburgers#tf2 comics

okay, so i'm re-reading ALL of the TF2 comics for my little zine project, and i have discovered interesting things and silly things.
starting with the WAR! update comic:
-The Bitch connects her microphone to different speakers to talk to both RED and BLU team.
-Meet the Spy is canon in the comics.
-The Bitch can read people pretty well i guess.
-The BLU soldier and the RED demo are besties. They met at a projectile weapons expo. They knew eachother for six months before the WAR! comic.
-The Bitch doesn't have any friends (whomp whomp).
-The Bitch: "In my experience, Miss Pauling, nothing kills a friendship faster... than a healthy competition."
-Saxton Hale is... just. like. that.
-Wait, did the first design of Bidwell have a moustache?
-Saxton FUCKS. (With The Bitch. What the fuck.) ((he also tries flirting with Miss Pauling.))
-monke lore:
poopy joe was an american monkeynaut that sadly passed away in a tragic explosion that occurred moments later after the launch. mann.co was involved in this accident but they keep denying it for legal reasons (during the comic they're going to be under senate investigation soon, and it seems that they were in BIG TROUBLE, so Helen asking for weapons was actually a great way for them to dispose of those weapons involved in the accident).
-(RED) Demoman lives in a mansion in New Mexico with his mum.
-He only has one morning off a week.
-He has three jobs
-His mum is quite mad at him because his dad (rip) had 26 jobs (and somehow managed to be with his family)
-He makes 5 million dollars a year (with the current inflation that would be around- 48,980,957.43$ ????? WHAT??????)
-Demo is halfway to retirement, around his 30's
-He was raised in a home with a bad economic situation :c
-His dad killed the (obviously not real) Queen of England
-The mum misses demo's father :(
-The Eyelander is a haunted, pattern-welded damascus steel and harmonically balanced sword slowly-forged for generations in the bowels of captured english kings
-Not only did Miss Pauling gave him The Eyelander, also multiple cases with weapons that we see in-game (the scottish resistance, for example)
-Miss Pauling calls him Mister DeGroot, which is kinda weird considering they're coworkers and know eachother, but i guess that during this time they weren't really close because demo only knew her as "that wee lass that works with the angry lady who's always screamin' at us while we fight".
-BLU soldier lives in a really secured appartment with lots of locks in his door. He also has two little doors in which he can take his arms outside to necksnap people.
-He lives miserably. He doesn't let ANYONE enter his house. Only the tomato soup wholesaler or the delivery man from the rib place.
-He has BOXES filled with cans of food, so he's house really looks like a fucking bunker.
-They both fought the police together???? Friendship goals honestly.
-Neither Demo and Soldier wanted to fight eachother, they did it to defend themselves from the other one. Demo was made sure that Soldier betrayed him first, and Soldier was manipulated into believing that his best friend said he was a civilian thanks to a poorly-made robotic voice of Tavish. This all led to both of them fighting eachother for their own safety.

the person making that ultimate valve character poll is the most hilariously corrupt poll blog I've ever seen like poopy joe beat soldier from tf2 FAIR AND SQUARE MIND YOU but the soldier fans who exist for some reason were so mad that poopy joe won that the poll owner promised to give people a "free revival" that 27 people requested to be soldier from tf2 so now he's back in the poll so now they're throwing away all the votes for poopy joe that were much much more than 27 soldier fans like you really think soldier from tf2 has a chance in hell at winning this poll? I'm keeping up with this like its the newspaper cartoon pages it fascinates me. BTW poopy joe is winning in round 2 right now

You know, the fact that PETA will complain about video games for attention makes me believe that they would have a heckkin heart attack over TF2 lore.
Medic uses animal organs from the black market in most of his experiments. Saxton Hale punches wild animals on a daily basis, and very likely caused the extinction of yetis. Also Poopy Joe, the monkey astronaut, exploded in a failed launch.
But they would probably rant about something stupid like Scout liking fried chicken or using fish and milk as weapons.

Hey, for the ask game. 17 and 21, either TF2 or WoF is fine :>
17 -There Should be More of this Fic/Art
Oohhh, hard one. Honestly I feel more fics about the side characters in WoF. A lot of them are very interesting and ripe for stories. I've been quietly and half-plotting out like a novella-sized fic about Albatross from his POV. I just wanna write about Albatross and show that he isn't just a "crazy old murder guy".
21 - Overhyped Part of Canon
Ngl the whole Abraham Lincoln being the inventor of stairs is so well known and talked about as if it's the height of TF2 lunacy that I can't really...agree. Yeah it's stupid and funny, but there are so many other dumb things to laugh at. One of my favourite things right now is the Poopy Joe saga, which was about a monkeynaut who was sent to space along with a thousand-year-old cursed sword called the Eyelander (it loves churros btw) to fight and kill his Soviet nemesis, Vladimir Bananas. However, when being sent up, the rocket exploded and our beloved Poopy Joe died. MannCo. (who funded this all) hosted a giant memorial, however it's hinted that they actually sabotaged the rocket and did this all to cover it up. It's so...emblematic of the madness of TF2 and I can't help but feel like the whole "President of the USA, Abraham Lincoln, invents stairs after people use rocket jumping to get to the second level of their houses for centuries" thing. Comedy peaked with this image.

Do you think 9/11 still would’ve happened in the TF2 universe, or would it have accidentally been stopped by Saxton Hale tearing a hole in the cockpit to skydive after murdering around 30 different animals
Saxton Hale is effectively immortal and you cannot convince me otherwise
if we’re gonna be completely real, poopy joe’s death is treated as the equivalent of 9/11 so

the sad thing is i've spent that much time reading the comics and tf2 'lore' that all of these i already know of, except that horrific bonzo effigy.
if you want to read up something funny, look up poopy joe
Some choice selections from TF2 wiki’s “non-player characters” page, which presumably are a lot funnier if you don’t know anything about TF2.
