Character breakdown; Overlord

Character Breakdown:

How I feel about this character: I love his mocking attitude in IDW, but I also love how serious and commanding he is in Super God Masterforce. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, but I'd start with the Headmasters cartoon since it came first.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Himself. I'm a fan of the Masterforce iteration where he's a duocon made up of a husband and wife team. He gives me Garnet vibes but as an evil human combiner duo trying to help an evil orb take over the planet. I even made designs for their individual transtectors in mech form once, which I'll probably redo at some point on my art blog. If that's something you're interested in, just give me a holler.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I don't think he has many friends since he's an asshole and all his close connections were cut off for a mirad of reasons, but in my AU he was friends with Double Punch while they were in the gladiatorial arena in Kaon together. They were both top champions for a long while.

My unpopular opinion about this character: He should be two people more often. I think it adds an interesting element to his character, and I would be interested in seeing him be revealed to be a combiner duo later on after being introduced to his character. It would explain a lot of things about him, like why he was so hard to beat, and why he's such a mysterious powerhouse to others.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wanted to see more of his gladiator days. It's supposedly where he got his hatred for failure in IDW1, because Megatron kicked his ass and he's had a fear of losing ever since. I think seeing what kind of a person he was before Megatron would give a better sense of how he changed over time. We know he was forged on Luna 2, but other than that, what was his function? What job did he have? How did he end up in the arena? I have a whole backstory written for him if anyone's interested.

Herculean Gains: The Ultimate Transformation

Ethan hesitated at the entrance of Herculean Gains. The gym was massive, filled with the sound of clanking weights and deep, masculine grunts. His friends had urged him to start working out to help with his depression, and this place had just opened nearby.

He swallowed nervously, adjusting his hoodie. The guys inside were huge—tall, broad, powerful. They radiated confidence, unlike him. Still, he took a deep breath and stepped inside.

“Yo, new guy!” a deep, commanding voice called out.

Ethan turned and nearly stumbled. Towering over him was Hercules Gold, the gym��s owner—a massive, bronzed alpha with thick, bulging muscles barely contained by his sweat-drenched tank. His cocky smirk sent a shiver down Ethan’s spine.

“You look lost, bro,” Hercules said, crossing his massive arms. “You wanna lift, or you wanna change?”

Ethan frowned. “I… I just wanna get in better shape. I get kinda down sometimes, and—”

Hercules cut him off with a booming laugh. “Yeah, nah. You don’t need therapy, lil’ dude. You need Himbo Juice.”

Before Ethan could react, Hercules shoved a massive green shaker into his hands. The liquid inside glowed thick and powerful.

“Drink,” Hercules ordered.

Something about his voice made Ethan obey without question. He tilted the bottle back and chugged.

BOOM.

Heat erupted in his core, spreading like wildfire. His hoodie split down the middle, revealing his chest ballooning outward, pecs inflating into thick, heavy slabs of muscle dusted with hair.

His arms surged in size, biceps bulging into thick, veiny powerhouses, triceps swelling to match. His skinny legs exploded with mass, his jeans shredding apart as his quads became tree trunks of pure strength, thick gym shorts forming in their place.

His face sharpened, jawline squaring, lips curling into a cocky, arrogant smirk. His soft, styled hair transformed into a short, messy jock cut. His mind... shifted.

No more overthinking. No more sadness. No more gay thoughts.

Only gains, chicks, and pure alpha dominance.

Ethan—no, EJ—flexed, admiring his godly physique in the mirror. His new deep, confident voice rumbled out.

“Haha, fuck yeah, bro! Look at these fuckin’ gains!” He grabbed his pecs, bouncing them arrogantly. “Ain’t no room for weak shit no more!”

Hercules smirked. “Atta boy. Welcome to the alpha life.”

EJ grinned, rolling his massive shoulders. Depression? Gone. Thinking too much? Fuck that. He had only one mission now—lifting, smashing chicks, and being a fuckin’ alpha king.

What do you think Pharma's relationship with flight/his alt-form is?

He's pretty divorced from his flying alt-mode, mainly for internalized Functionism reasons imo. It's not that Pharma has any aspersions towards or fear of flying, but I think because of his alt-mode exemption-- the fact that he literally had to be an exception,that he became a doctor despite being a jet rather than simply being a doctor and a jet-- he distanced himself from his alt-mode at least on a subconscious level because, politically/socially, maintaining his safety and position in society meant that he was forced to play up his "forged medic" half and downplay his "jet" half. It's honestly the only plausible explanation I can come up with to explain Tyrest's "famous for being forged" line bc that's literally the only thing I can think of that would make Pharma famous for being forged and not just for being a doctor.

I'm struggling to find a good, non-offensive allegory, but I'd imagine it's a similar struggle to someone who's biracial, multicultural, multinational, etc: there's always a struggle where people whose existence/identity straddles multiple boundaries always get forced into only being one of those things, not allowed to be multilayered and complex. For Functionist reasons, Pharma can't just be a doctor who turns into a jet, he has to be a Doctor TM and be really good at being a Doctor TM because that's the role/half of himself that society has decided is the most important part. Not only as a matter of prejudice, but that he was literally told "you exist to be a Doctor TM (but actually we could take away your ability to be a doctor at any time)."

So as a result of all that, I actually take Pharma's lack of transforming on-screen in canon and extrapolate that into the headcanon that Pharma rarely transforms/flies in general. For one, it's just because he physically needs to be in root mode to do his job, and his job is basically the only thing he does, ergo he's in root mode basically all the time. And for two, bc of internalized Functionism, Pharma basically distanced himself from his alt-mode and neglected flying as part of his lifestyle. Sort of a defense mechanism of "If I fly too much or enjoy flying recreationally/as a sport, what if someone Notices and decides I make a better jet than doctor."

I actually headcanon that Pharma is shit at flying and very noticeably so, like to the point that other jet alt-modes are like "Dude wtf how can you be forged as a jet and fly this badly." It sucks really badly for Pharma bc it basically then puts him in a position where in the world of the intellectual class, he's otherized as Alt-Mode Exempt TM, but in the world of other jets, he's otherized because he's not freight/military and doesn't have the same lived experiences, skills, culture, etc that other jets do. So unfortunately, Pharma basically lives that mixed kid life of "No matter where I go, I'm always the odd one out because people always notice how I'm Not Fully One Of Them."

Shockwave and Buster Gallon's would neither be questionably good or horrifyingly amazing

By some one point Shockwave just explains to Buster Gallon what is Empurata in a vivid description (big mistake/idea) now Buster Gallon wants to do it to Buffalo Crush (Soundwave stopped Buster Gallon from doing it and scolded Shockwave)

By this other time Mega Ambler and Shockwave had a bond too, the same way as Buster's they even once captured Starscream and tried to do unlicensed crap to him but Jun stopped them from doing worse Ambler had a taste of Synth En and you know the rest, in the end

Never let Shockwave get close to Buster and Ambler without supervision

As Shockwave explains you just see Buster Gallon nodding his head like everything Shockwave's saying makes sense, as you see Buffalo Crush standing next to him with a look of horror on his face staring straight at Buster Gallon

Buster Gallon slowly turns his head to look right at Buffalo Crush, looking him up and down, Buffalo Crush takes slow steps backwards like he encountered a wild animal. There's a moment of stillness and then Buster Gallon charges and Buffalo Crush turns and runs

They manage to run all around the Nemesis, Buffalo Crush screaming all the while. Soundwave comes out to see what in the world was happening and Buffalo Crush hides behind them. Buster Gallon kindly asks Soundwave to move with a sinister look on his face. Soundwave quickly shuts it down, takes Buffalo Crush away from Buster Gallon, and scolds Shockwave for telling Buster Gallon that. Shockwave honestly does not care

As for Mega Ambler, he usually has better control of himself, but after getting his servos on Synth En a lot of his (few) morals are out the window. And the Synth En is more effective on Mega Ambler, due to energon being like a drug for Cardbots. Shockwave and Mega Ambler manage to get Starscream chain to a table (He tried to betray Megatron again). Mega Ambler wants to see what makes a seeker different from other flyers and Shockwave agrees

Starscream is horrified, and he never thought he'd be thankful for a human. Jun and the bots came in time before they could do anything. They knocked Mega Ambler out and took him back to base

Both Buster Gallon and Mega Ambler are on supervision for the time being
