Pro Wrestling Illustrated: August 1995
It’s a Man’s Sport? Yeah, Right!
Women are taking over the workplace in modern society–and taking over in wrestling, too. Men are no longer making all the key decisions.
By Liz Hunter
Sherri Martel can remember the times when, as a little girl growing up in New Orleans, she and her friends would go to the playground for an afternoon of unsupervised fun. Within 15 minutes, there would be a dozen parents on the scene trying to break up a disturbance. Little Sherri had done it again.
“It got to the point after a while where none of the other kids would sit in the sandbox with me,” Martel fondly recalled. “To me, that was a little wrestling ring, and I’d just pick up the little kids and slam them in the sand. I guess I knew what I wanted to do with my life at an early age.”
Tamara Murphy Fytch has slightly different memories of her earlier years. Fytch didn’t punch, kick, or slam anybody, but she controlled her peers nonetheless. From 10th grade on, Fytch was president of her student council, head cheerleader, captain of the girl’s varsity soccer team, and president of the debating society. Not surprisingly, her peers voted her “Most Likely To  Succeed” During her senior year of high school.
“Everybody knew me,” Fytch said. “I had my hand in just about everything, and you know what was the most awesome thing of all? Even with doing all that, I still pulled straight A’s. I’ve known I’m something special for a long time.”
Fytch and Martel are two of the very special women ruling the power meetings in wrestling these days. They are mentally and emotionally stronger than a lot of the men in the sport. Physically, Martel can give many of the guys a run for their money (did anyone catch her beating on The Nasty Boys at WCW Uncensored?). Anyone who still thinks wrestling is a man’s sport has another think coming when wrestlings power gals are around.
Fytch. Martel. Woman. Miss Texas. Alundra Blayze, BullNakano. These are the women whose power, intelligence, and beauty shrink any man down to size when they’re around. Wrestling’s female power brokers wear the pants in this sport.
Take Martel, who has managed Harlem Heat to the WCW World tag team title. Here’s a team that had little going for it until Sister Sherri joined the fold. Under her management, they have risen to the top of the tag team heap.
[Woman doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her. Sandman probably wouldn’t have accomplished nearly as much in ECW without her. Heck, she’ll even try to claw Cactus Jack’s eyes out if she sees fit.]
“Harlem Heat is great because I don’t let anybody step on them,” Martel said. “Anyone who thinks they can pull a fast one on my men is in for a big surprise. I’ve been around this game long enough to know the ins and outs, and one thing I know is that when you have the belts, you call the shots.”
Martel has also won the AWA and WWF Women’s titles and managed WCW World champion Ric Flair and WWF Intercontinental champion Shawn Michaels. She is not only the top female manager in the world, she is possibly the top manager in the world, period.
“I don’t see who’s had more success managing more top wrestlers lately,” said broadcaster Tony Schiavone. “Sherri has power, and she knows how to use it.”
So does Fytch, who made relative unknowns Chris Candido and Brian Lee into somebodies… and champions. There’s little doubt Fytch’s star will soon rise much faster and shine much brighter. She’s just one of those self-made women who need only one little break to turn it into something big. Fytch is smart, beautiful, and aggressive.
Woman hides her intelligence behind a beautiful, though somewhat slutty exterior. She knows sex sells, and a sexy image can help advance a woman’s career. This Woman, who managed The Sandman in ECW and had managed former World tag team champions Doom in WCW, rules with a lace first.
Who can forget the night when Tommy Dreamer, despite being beaten to a bloody pulp by a Singapore cane-wielding Sandman, refused to kiss Woman’s feet? She said Sandman would stop only if he did this. But doing so would have been giving in to her power. There is no doubting who controls Sandman.
“I don’t like men telling me what to do,” Women said. “It’s not my style. Men think they can have their way with me because I’m beautiful and sexy, but it’s all part of a power trip, and the power is mine.”
[Sherri Martel regularly assists in the physical assaults by The Nasty Boys and doesn’t care what the consequences are. Is it so hard to believe she bullied all the other kids in the sandbox when she was little?]
Kimberly, “Dirty White Boy” Tony Anthony’s “Dirty White Girl,’ has been a bit more subservient than most women in wrestling, but still plenty powerful. Last year, she knocked out a wrestler named The Hornet with a single punch.
[Alundra Blayze is beautiful, but she’d rather be known as the woman who made women’s wrestling popular again. As for Bull Nakano, she’s as tough and powerful as most men.]
There’s no doubting Miss Texas’ beauty or power. She is still the only woman ever to be ranked on the “PWI 500.” Long live Missy Hyatt, who’s out of the sport, but not out of our hearts or minds. The image of Missy lives forever. And she wasn’t merely the blonde bombshell to end all blonde bombshells. She was an effective manager, valet, and Tv commentator.
[Would Chris Candido ever have won the NWA title without Tamara Murphy Fytch’s expert guidance? No way, she says. In just two years, Fytch has become one of wrestling’s most powerful managers.]
Alundra Blayze, formerly known as Madusa Miceli, and Bull Nakano, the WWF World Women’s champion, do their work mainly in the ring. Although she is extremely beautiful, Blayze would rather be known as a world-class wrestler than a world-class beauty. Her goal is to make women’s wrestling as popular in North America as it is in Japan.
[Miss Texas has made life hell for practically every woman who has appeared in the USWA… and a few men, too. After beating Hamie Dundee two years, she became the first woman ever to be ranked in the “PWI 500.”]
Nakano, who has never been accused of being beautiful, is one of the world’s most violent wrestlers. Many men are afraid to go one-on-one with her. Nakano is so tough that she has scared away a host of potential contenders to her title.
Luna Vachon scared away many suitors before marrying the equally scary Vampire Warrior in 1994. It takes a strong man to simply look at Luna, much less confront her. But Luna is the prototype of today’s strong female in wrestling. She is much more concerned with actions than appearances. She isn’t afraid of being aggressive. Luna doesn’t care if men approve of her.
Like most of the other women in wrestling, Luna approves of herself, and that’s all that matters.

I joked that I was going to make a Lifetime movies rec list a while ago and Truly being bored at work has given birth to worse ideas, so this is one for my fellow cinephiles lol
My Highest Recommended Lifetime Movies in the Order in which they Changed my Life
Small Sacrifices (1989)
I'm honestly unclear whether this was intended originally to be a Lifetime movie because they showed it on a few different networks, but this was the first one that I ever remembered seeing and it Rocked my world. It's a true story about a woman named Diane Downs who attempted to murder her children and my mother and her friends lived for this film in a way that like is actually bonechilling. But I was spellbound by Farrah Fawcett in this movie, I thought she was the greatest actress I'd ever seen, and the story was really dark and scary and felt disgustingly salacious. So everything I'd come to like about Lifetime movies lol.
No One Would Tell (1996)
All my mom loved in the world was to wake up hungover on a Sunday and turn Lifetime on and proceed to fall asleep again while my tiny child peepers beheld Truly heinous shit. This one is one that I continue to make people watch because I can't be alone with the memories, but basically Candace Cameron is in a horribly abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Fred Savage, and he ends up murdering her and it is Incredibly sad and traumatic. There's a historic scene where she's taking a shower and her entire body is just littered with bruises and I will Never forget it!!!!!!!!! Very, very dark. But....iconic.
Odd Girl Out (2005)
This was the point in time where Uncle Television was very much concerned with telling young girls about bullying (for a different and just as good interp of this theme see ABC Family's Cyberbully starring Emily Osmont). But this one was the first and best to me, I related to it very much as an ostracized teen. It stars Alexa Vega, and she's a teen that has her whole popular friend group turn against her and she gets bullied bad lol It gets dark but only for like 20 minutes and then her redemption arc is nice. I loved this movie to death until I discovered Thirteen (2003), which is Way darker and had girls kissing in it for a few seconds.
Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal (2008)
This movie was my identity. This movie was my child. Every time it was on TV I stopped whatever I was doing and watched it. I have no idea why, because I have been told people mainly find this one boring, but I think it's mostly due to the fact that I really do love movies where teenagers behave badly with impunity. This was a Ripped From the Headlines Lifetime movie about a roving band of cheerleaders that terrorize everyone in their wake at a Texas high school and basically get away with it because one of their mom's is the principal. I think it is a lol and a half, it's actually pretty competent, and there's like Good performances in it from actual actors. Highest rec possible.
Liz & Dick (2012)
Lindsay Lohan gets so unfairly maligned for her performance in this, it's sick. My most cherished memories of my last year of High School are watching this movie late at night and reading all of Lindsay's blind items and every article that was being written about her failed comeback. Again, I think she's actually okay in this, but for a lot of people it was insulting to cast Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and to those people I say haters get thee behind me. It's fun, it's campy, it's not too long, everybody watch it and relax for a while.
Flowers in the Attic (2014)
DARK DARK DARK but also STUPID STUPID STUPID. Seriously this movie has no business being as funny as it is given the subject matter. Basically a bunch of kids are uprooted by the death of their father and their mother forces them to live in the attic of her wealthy parents home under false pretenses, and incest ensues. Which, again, sounds really upsetting but is actually pretty funny a lot of the time lol. Their evil god-fearing grandma is played by Ellen Burstyn and she's So over the top, and their mom is my queen Heather Graham who is actually pretty chilling. The other movies in the saga are Also pretty dark, stupid, and fun, but this one was a legit phenomenon. Me and my college roommate would host viewings of it in our dorm room, it's really fun to watch in a crowd of people that don't get darked out by poorly handled incest.
Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance (2018)
This is part one of a trilogy, but it's probably the best one even though the third is pretty fun. Honestly, you guys, this one is just Nice. Truly dgaf about the irl Harry and Meghan but this movie is actually a very fun love story, and it's sweet and has a few legitimately compelling twists and turns, and ultimately has a really satisfying ending. The actors playing Meghan and Harry are stellar, it's funny, it's cute, another highly recced film.
Who Killed Jonbenet? (2016)
An unhinged Eion Bailey performance for the ages with added child murder. Sarah and I are Definitely recording an episode about this one in the future, but truly it's almost too bleak to be chic and gets saved at the last minute by how inadvertently goofy it is. Eion's character develops a psycho-sexual (to me) fixation on an older detective who comes in and basically upends his investigation, and everything about it gives "but daddy please" and I love it and hate it at the same time.
Death of a Cheerleader (1994/2019)
Both versions of this movie are elite, the original is truly iconic and the remake is actually deluxe and makes some changes that I think make it an actually interesting movie. In Lifetime fashion it is Based On a True Story (fun fact: in my younger years I listened to My Favorite Murder and this story gets mentioned in one of their first episodes and they offhandedly mention that the murder weapon was like 8 inches long and That is a fact that has stuck with me in the middle of the night). I'd say watch them both, because the OG has a Tori Spelling performance that cannot be missed and is just a basic mean girls comeuppance story, but the redux is a lot more thoughtful and actually reflects some humanity on all characters which (if you haven't noticed) Lifetime isn't always great at lol.
Too Young to Be a Dad (2002)
UGH. Me and my girlfriend Just watched this and honestly that's a shame because I wish I'd had this movie my entire life. Paul Dano is a teenager that loses his virginity and impregnates his friend in one fell swoop and he has to Step Up and become a Man as like a fifteen year old, which sounds crazy and is but is legitimately a captivating movie. And Paul Dano is sooo fucking good in, it's not even a joke, watch it for his performance alone. I laughed, I cried, a perfect film (even though they never address abortion as a viable option lol Lifetime can only go so far ig).
This was Purely just for me but if you read this and watch these movies please lmk what you thought ~

tell me what i need to know about lance. give me clips. let’s talk
OH OHOHOHOHOHOH MY SWEET INDY, MY INDY IN SHINING ARMOR CONE HERE RIGHT NOW MUAH MUAH MUAH
*spoilers for Varsity Blues ahead*
Ok well, Lance Harbor is the starring quarterback of a small town in texas that idolizes football, to the point where they keep seniors back a few years to bulk them up for uni applications. He's a major hometown hero, like there are fully billboards of his face up, he's that important to the town ecosystem. Well loved, perfect player, but hiding severe knee injuries that actually end up ruining his chances of a football career, despite being the most promising. In the final game of his team's senior year he settles into being a coach who cares about the players, coming to terms with the fact that he may never leave this town but this is how he can make his impact.
He's charming, charismatic, everybody loves him. He's shown to like the idea of public sex/semi-public sex, goes to a strip club with his boys, and has an adorable southern accent. I just know he likes it dirty ok, I just know he can talk his pretty little cheerleader girlfriend into letting him fuck her ass, or suck his dick in his car out by the fields. He's your perfect all American boy and I need him so bad 😭
Something to note about VB is it's about dismantling this idea of the ideal american youth by showing the problems these kids were facing in this small town. So while his relationship to his girlfriend seems very sweet and clean cut, she's actually with him because she knows he's the starring quarter back and has already received scholarships to good universities. He was her ticket out, so there might be something to play with in the fact that he may or may not know this relationship is transactional. When lance loses his scholarships because of his Injuries she tries to fuck his best friend who's become the new starring quarterback, and then breaks down about loser her ride too, and no one understanding.
He's just so clean cut, so pretty, so all-American, and because he isn't one of the main characters we don't really get to dive into the nitty gritty of his development. I wanna muddy him up, I wanna know how he fucks, I wanna figure out what makes this guy tick. I just keep spinning him in my head because he looks pretty.
Here's him getting injured if you wanna hear him scream and cry 🥴
Him addressing the student body
Him barking orders as coach 🥴
Best for last, he's about to fuck his girl on top of a washing machine in the middle of a party
That's pretty much all I could get. I know it's not much but again like Brian he's such a blank slate I feel like we can do anything with him

A bid for Black Sabbath bravado in “Friday Night Lights”
Tumblr media
Within the pilot episode of the masterful mid-’00s teen drama “Friday Night Lights,” we’re presented with two best friends. There’s the all-American, wholesome good boy, Jason Street (Scott Porter) -- the star quarterback of the Dillon Panthers, with little else but a bright future glistening in the crosshairs of his steely focus. And then, there’s his lifelong pal, Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) -- a lovable party boy who turns up to practice with vodka on his breath, and who has seemingly accepted the inheritance of a dead-end future from his deadbeat dad. If Lux Lisbon would have survived “The Virgin Suicides” to have a kid with Trip Fontaine, it would have grown up to be Tim.
Set in the small town of Dillon, Texas, the two teens occupy vastly different corners of the pigskin pressure cooker within which they exist. Nice guys like Street do well a place like Dillon, and he has everything going for him -- incredible career prospects, a head cheerleader for a girlfriend, and the entire town’s adulation.
Meanwhile, Riggins is shown to be a reckless rogue, forgiven for his sins only because of how great he plays ‘ball -- and how much the ladies love him. You can see him souring between scenes and his burnout feels inevitable and overdue -- living with his brother amidst a blur of blondes and beer bottles, with nary an emotion in sight. While Street trains and studies and earns his place on the pitch, Riggins emerges with all the discipline of Iggy Pop on a stage full of broken glass -- raw and wounded, he takes whatever fire might fuel that inevitable burnout and pours it like kerosene onto the field.
At a Panther’s Party hosted at Garrity’s Automobile -- the hottest ticket in town, folks! -- Dillon’s mayor, Lucy Rodell, squares up to Street to tell him some home truths. “You’re a nice boy,” she tells him. “And you got great manners.” And while he’s politely Yes ma’am-ing it up in response, she cuts to the chase. “Knock it off. You can't go into the game tomorrow night like that,” she proclaims. “Carpet bomb 'em, you understand? ...  Chew 'em up, spit 'em out.”
A closeted lesbian who clearly knows her way around unleashing a certain amount of repressed energy wherever she can, Rodell recommends that he listen to the early work of Black Sabbath, assuring him, “It’ll make you mean.” Boys can’t be soft and nice. Winners have to be mean and gristly. The survival of the town depends on this mentality: It chugs at a fountain of toxic masculinity and it lays waste to those who cannot swallow the broth and conform.
During an episode of the podcast, “It’s Not Only Football: ‘Friday Night Lights And Beyond,” Porter revealed that the sequence wasn’t scripted. But it certainly sets up the tone for the rest of the episode, if not the rest of the show. After all, it was Black Sabbath who performed, “Killing Yourself To Live” in 1973, with singer, Ozzy Osbourne -- a good boy who arguably had to make himself mean to survive -- singing, “How people look and people stare, well I don't think that I even care. You rot your life away and what do they give? You're only killing yourself to live.”
And while the song’s lyrics may be about the hollow nature of the music industry, the song could certainly apply to a small town community that rests all its hopes, fortunes, and futures on the score card of a teenage sports team -- no matter the cost.
That certainly feels true when Street becomes paralysed after experiencing a catastrophic spinal injury during a tackle on game night. The Rodell scene might have been played for laughs, but it lurches back into focus like a harsh foreshadowing: Was Street too nice? Too polite? If he would have been tougher, meaner, nastier, would his body have experienced the impact of another body differently? Would he have been protected by the dark arts of Black Sabbath?
Obviously, the answer is no. As Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) reaffirms to Street, his team, and just about anyone else who needs to hear it, the tragedy was blameless. Unfortunate but unavoidable. Life is cruel. Unpredictable. Much of “Friday Night Lights” pivots around this problem -- like a coach drawing up the strategy of an upcoming game, you have to decide how you’re going to play against the obstacles of being alive.
Alas, though apt, “Killing yourself to live” isn’t the mantra of the Dillon Panthers, but rather the searingly motivational, “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose.” Like much of the storytelling on “Friday Night Lights,” the team motto doesn’t just apply to football -- it’s also a sturdy life affirmation that just about anyone in need can scribble onto the desperation of their morning journals. It’s a statement that urges anyone who can pay attention to it to remain sweet and vulnerable in the face of adversity. You’ll be dealt tough tackles, the mantra insists, but don’t lose yourself in the pursuit to overcome them.
Ultimately, it’s a mantra that suggests that softness, sweetness, and niceness can also create winners -- but it’s all about strategy. It’s no good being soft, sweet, and nice if you don’t how to apply those qualities properly. Alas, the universe -- and other people -- are generally not so kind. Make yourself too pliable, and life will contort and reshape you into something you may not recognise -- or at the very least, may not want to recognise.   As the show progresses, it becomes evident that much of “Friday Night Lights” also pivots around the “Can’t lose” aspect of that mantra. Say it isolated, without the eyes and the heart, and it sounds desperate -- almost deranged. For many of the male characters, their arcs in the show center around how they reckon with failure, tragedy, and defeat: What loss does to masculinity and how others perceive it.
For Street, it hardens him. But it’s earned.
During an appearance on “It’s Not Only Football,” the showrunner of “Friday Night Lights,” Jason Katims, revealed that in the development of the show, he was drawn to the idea of producing stories about marginalised people. “There were very few shows at the time -- or movies for that matter -- that really looked at real small town America [and that were] about people that weren’t privileged,” he explained. “Television, even the good television, was really about privilege.”
In the world of “Friday Night Lights,” all fortune is predicated on football. If you’re within the vicinity of the ball, then you wield a certain amount of privilege. Whether you’re a player, a coach, a financer, or a loved one of any of these people, then you probably have a little of power to leverage within Dillon. But that isn’t to say that this power is versatile or something that can be wielded within the real world.  After all, it becomes quickly apparent that being a part of the game doesn’t protect any of these characters from the indignities of prejudice. Nor does it salvage against the sort of failure that becomes of a person who isn’t equipped with the same access to opportunities as those with more privilege.
With the exception of a sacred few well-to-do, able-bodied white folk in the show, “Friday Night Lights” is populated by characters who are weighed down by obstacles related to poverty, abuse, race, gender, addiction, homophobia, and disability. However, part of the show’s charm is how it centers on these characters not so much overcoming these obstacles, but rather rising above the prejudice and bullshit of it all so they can figure out how to live their lives on their own terms. Even if that means leaving small-town Dillon, Texas -- and the team -- in the process.
In the pilot episode, Street is presented as being perhaps the most privileged person in Dillon. His parents appear to be happily married and of a fair, stable income. He’s straight, able-bodied, athletically gifted, good looking -- and, impossibly, almost ridiculously humble about all of it. But with one injury, much of that changes. He’s forced to reckon with being paraplegic while watching his family’s savings and income be stripped to the bone due to medical expenses and rehabilitation.
He’s reconfigured by the community that once heralded him a hero, and he loses access to almost all the corners of the world and the people that meant anything to him: His game, his girlfriend, his best friend.
While Street reconfigures his idea of masculinity -- featuring some bold declarations about simply being a cripple who wants to listen to Nirvana, moooom -- and toughens up in the process, Riggins stops fighting his emotions, and softens up, instead. When Street becomes paralysed, something inside his best friend breaks open and for episode after episode, he lets life pulvarise him into a tender steak of emotional frailty -- and it’s rare that he ever gets a swing in, himself. It’s a far cry from the beer chugging emo-void of episode one. Regardless, although Street accepts a tougher interior, he nevertheless maintains his heart. He might speak up for himself more now, but his actions are rarely cruel or without merit.
The character arcs of “Friday Night Lights” lean against this same principle again and again -- the people who prevail aren’t necessarily the ones who give in to the impulse to strike back and be spiteful or seek vengeance. But rather, its those who allow themselves to be vulnerable -- who take the hits without striking back and who rise above, soft and strong. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
But there’s someone who can put this far better than I ever could. At the end of the pilot episode, Coach Taylor makes a rousing speech to his wounded team. They’ve just watched their friend and teammate be carried off the field, his parents and girlfriend screaming from the rafters. Pushing their feelings aside, they were forced to continue the game and not lose sight of the goal.
“Life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable. And we will all, at some point in our lives ... fall. We will all fall,” he tells them. “We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested ... It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.”
Crucially, “Friday Night Lights” hangs its cap upon the stern fist pumps of this speech. It’s a sentiment that offers the reminder that nothing is owed, and everything is earned. Mayor Rodell had it wrong when she encouraged Street to get mean and obliterate the opposition. What the show suggests is that the only path to true success and accord is to leave yourself open to being the one to get chewed up and spat out by life, not the other way around. The victory can be found in however you emerge from the other side. It takes courage to be vulnerable -- and to be vulnerable requires a period of transformation.  Even Black Sabbath dropped their meanness and bat-snacking to reckon with heartbreak via a piano-ballad, “Changes”  -- “The world had its evil way. My heart was blinded, love went astray.” Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose, boys.

born in the biggest party and college city in the country, austin, texas, bradley chadley was born to paula santiago bradley - a former dallas cowboys cheerleader and stradley chadley - college football coach for the university of austin and owner of the most famous sports bar in austin ‘champs.’
growing up in such a party town, bradley spent his days on the football field with his dad and while he was never the most athletic, still played football all throughout his school years.
however, not being the best athlete, nor the best student in school, meant that he had to find a niche for himself and that niche was partying.
bradley was notorious for throwing the most wildest house parties - from after football game ragers to ‘just because’ get togethers that turned into a scene out of project x, he became an absolute legend in austin.
his parents, condoned all of this, simply because they felt better about him doing what he was doing under their own roof than out on the streets somewhere.
when high school came around, his parents gifted him his first dj set for chirstmas and soon, that became his thing at his parties.
dubbed ‘dj brady c’ he became obsessed with making mixes and creating his own stuff, blowing up on the austin social scene, so much so that bars and clubs began to hire him to perform.
skipping out on college, he spent most of those college years bouncing around texas and the west coast, becoming a huge dj in the party scene in america. however, that was all he had going for him, but he was fine with it. his goal was to build a life that was a constant party.
so when his mother came across a casting call for a new mtv reality show (inspired by jersey shore) bradley jumped at the opportunity to be paid to party.
for ten years of his life, he dedicated it to the show, which catapulted him into absolute stardom. he became the loveable fun one, the one who was more or less a ring leader to the group, always getting into crazy antics, pulling pranks on the cast and overall, being the fun one who always kept moral up.
the beauty of the show was that he could still work on his dj career, it often being incorporated into his plotline. eventually, him and his co-star (wanted connection - the vinny to his pauly d and the drew to his alex) teamed up and began djing together as the notorious duo the chainsmokers.
they began playing clubs, parties and festivals all over the country, and eventually the world, becoming notorious on the scene and only upping their celebrity even more.
the world fell in love with the duo, who even had a few spin-off seasons of their own show called ‘double shot at love’ which was a dating show where the two attempted to find love, but of course, the party boys never did, because they simply can’t commit.
after the show ended last year, brady started putting all his focus into djing with his partner, and they released their very first album ‘bouquet’ with hit songs like roses and don’t let me down.
gearing up for their second release ‘collage’ brady is at the top of the world, on the top of his game, and has no plans on ever stopping or slowing down.

Actor and Drag Star Shangela Accused of Multiple Sexual Assaults
Tumblr media
Ben Shimkus
Tumblr media
Shangela was a breakthrough star.
With her sharp-tongued retorts, viral catchphrases, and distinctive Southern accent, the gregarious Texas drag queen quickly rose to become one of RuPaul’s Drag Race’s most beloved contestants.
“[It’s] like ‘Angela’ with an ‘S-H,’” she explained on the show. “The debutantess of the Deep South.”
Despite an early Season Two elimination when the queen was in her late twenties, a more polished version of the future star returned to the runway for two other installments in the show’s franchise.
Drag Race fans often complain that she was robbed of the crown during her appearance on the show’s All Stars spinoff.
“She’s amazing. We’ve actually put her on the show, like, three times?” RuPaul told Andy Cohen in 2022.
“She’s a fabulous queen.”
Shangela subsequently built an image as a self-affirming queer activist.
youtube
“In order to make it through this life, you are going to have to be your biggest cheerleader,” Shangela wrote in a 2021 op-ed.
“Be kind to yourself. Take care of your mind, soul, and body. And motivate yourself to keep going.”
Queer culture embraced the drag star’s compassionate branding.
A headline-grabbing performance for GLAAD, sold-out touring productions, and top billing at Pride events cemented her status as one of the most visible queer people in pop culture, projecting her into historically nonrepresentative spaces.
She appeared in the film A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper and the television series Dancing With the Stars, attended Beyoncé’s Renaissance red-carpet movie premiere, and received a White House invitation for the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act.
Facing a wave of conservative anti-drag and anti-LGBTQ+ laws across the U.S., followers have flocked to Shangela for motivation in a dark time for the queer community.
“I’ll forever cherish this moment,” Shangela wrote to her 1.6 million Instagram followers about her SAG Award red-carpet appearance in 2019.
“I’ve had to showcase our LGBTQ+ fabulosity in many spaces that don’t always have equal representation.”
But behind the curtain — in hotel rooms and apartments — four people allege to Rolling Stone that Darius Jeremy (“DJ”) Pierce, the man behind the famous drag persona, either sexually assaulted them or attempted to have sex with them when they were too inebriated to consent.
A fifth person claims Pierce attempted anal penetration in a bathroom closet despite rejecting his advances.
The allegations against the 43-year-old Pierce mirror elements laid out in a recently settled civil lawsuit against the drag star by a former colleague.
(Neither Drag Race nor RuPaul are implicated in any of Rolling Stone‘s findings.)
According to court documents, Pierce was accused of raping a production assistant from We’re Here — a television show bringing one-night-only drag shows to small communities across the U.S. — after purchasing several drinks for them.
Tumblr media
In a legal letter to Rolling Stone, Pierce, through his lawyer Andrew Brettler, called the allegations “false and unsupported by any evidence or reliable witness testimony,” claiming that there were “significant problems with purported accusers’ accounts.”
youtube
Brettler asserted that Pierce “adamantly denies ever engaging in nonconsensual sex.”
This investigation, which began in November 2022, is based on 16 months of research, court documents, and interviews with several accusers.
Over the course of reporting, Rolling Stone uncovered a previously unreported police complaint, filed in Los Angeles, and multiple independent accusations spanning several years alleging sexually coercive and assaultive behavior by the drag star.
Five people independently described nights out with Pierce when they were between the ages of 18 and 23.
All five said that Pierce, nearly double their age and fresh off headline-grabbing spots on the silver screen and awards-show red carpets, drank with them through the late hours of the night and into the morning.
The accusers all said they were acutely aware of Shangela’s celebrity status — three people said they were aspiring drag queens.
One of the sources claimed they got so drunk they vomited in a hotel bed moments before they were allegedly assaulted in the same sheets.
Nearly all accusers said it took them at least months to process their alleged sexual assault.
The alleged interactions span from 2012 to 2018 in Louisiana, Texas, California, and the United Kingdom.
Pierce has maintained his innocence but admitted to meeting with four of the sources on the dates of the alleged assaults.
Pierce said he does not remember the fifth accuser.
Tumblr media
Controversy around the drag star initially erupted last May when a production assistant named Daniel McGarrigle, working on HBO’s We’re Here, filed a civil lawsuit against Pierce and his employer Buckingham Television, alleging rape in Los Angeles after having filed a police report against the star in Ruston, Louisiana.
McGarrigle v Pierce
Tumblr media
Initial shockwaves rippled through drag-related social media, with the Los Angeles Times breaking the story.
Tumblr media
(A rep for Buckingham did not reply to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment. However, a HBO rep said in May 2023 that Buckingham “received a complaint late summer 2021 regarding an incident that was alleged to have occurred in early 2020. Buckingham and HBO take the safety and well-being of personnel on our shows very seriously, and Buckingham immediately launched an investigation. The investigation concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support these allegations.”)
McGarrigle, 40, alleged in the lawsuit he “threw up” from drinks provided by Pierce before he woke up to the drag star “rubbing his penis against his buttocks, attempting to insert himself into his anus.”
The lawsuit claimed Pierce thrust inside of McGarrigle while saying, “I know you want it, and you’re going to take it.”
All parties reached a settlement in February and the case was dismissed, Rolling Stone can confirm, though details remain undisclosed.
(Pierce did not respond to questions about the civil lawsuit.)
“This case has been resolved, and the defendants and their counsel acted in good faith,” Daniel M. Gilleon, McGarrigle’s lawyer, tells Rolling Stone.
“As such, I feel it would be inappropriate to discuss this matter or its resolution. I don’t know anything about the new allegations, but I certainly recognize the courage it takes for a victim to come forward.”
Three sources who spoke to Rolling Stone had spoken to BuzzFeed News, which was set to publish their allegations last year.
(McGarrigle also spoke to BuzzFeed News but declined to participate in this article.)
When the Pulitzer Prize-winning publication shuttered in April 2023, the investigation into Pierce was never published.
Two more accusers stepped forward during Rolling Stone’s continued reporting.
All five sources who spoke to Rolling Stone identify as queer and have participated in or watched drag shows.
Citing anti-drag and anti-trans laws across conservative states in the U.S., they all grappled with the decision to come forward with their allegations.
But, they all said, they want Pierce — not the queer community — to bear accountability for the allegations.
“I’m very confident I was clear with my no’s. I was declining advances. He still kept trying anyway” —Edward Ramirez
One of the sources who spoke exclusively to Rolling Stone — a 27-year-old named Helmer — filed a second police report against Pierce.
Helmer, who was 20 at the time of the alleged assault and is only using his first name out of fear of employment retaliation, filed the complaint in Los Angeles on June 1, 2023, though due to a procedural error, the police department didn’t return his report until Dec. 20.
(The LAPD did not respond to a request for comment.)
In the complaint, Helmer told police he was motivated to report his allegations after he “read articles published by the Los Angeles Times that indicated Pierce was suspected of conducting similar sex crimes with other victims.”
He told police he met Pierce in 2017 while working at a popular Los Angeles bar, where Helmer said he and Pierce exchanged numbers and social media accounts.
“I’m thinking we should hang out,” Pierce, then 36, told Helmer in Instagram direct messages reviewed by Rolling Stone.
“Let me take u to a late dinner.”
The two exchanged direct messages and went out for drinks the following night, Helmer told police.
After they met, the complaint states, “Pierce bought a ‘Mojito’ for [Helmer]. [He] stated he does not drink ‘Mojito’s’ [sic] but continued to have it out of respect for Pierce.”
Helmer told police he “does not have any recollection of the events that occurred after he drank the Mojito.”
According to the complaint, Helmer recalled “waking up completely naked on a bed and believed to be at Pierce’s residence.”
“[Helmer] asked Pierce what happened last night and why he was naked,” the complaint said.
“Pierce responded with, ‘We had sex, and there was another guy involved that you brought in.’ [Helmer] asked who that other guy was, and Pierce stated he did not know, ‘but you were really into it.’”
Helmer told police it “took him a few days to realize that he was sexually assaulted,” and by the time he came to the realization, he “believed he did not have enough evidence” to report the incident to authorities. Instead, he confided in two people: his roommate, Jay, and his current boyfriend, Josh, in 2017.
(Rolling Stone spoke to Jay and Josh, who are using their first names only to protect Helmer’s anonymity.)
Both recounted hearing details of Helmer’s allegation — including the mojito, the alleged sexual assault, and the second person present that night.
“I saw this young, sweet, scared, 20-year-old boy breaking down in front of me, and I was crushed for him,” Josh tells Rolling Stone about Helmer’s first time opening up to him.
Josh said he was proud of Helmer’s decision to file the police report.
“[Helmer] did this fucking scary thing in this scary sheriff’s station at night. It was the moment I [watched] the boy I hugged in my bed crying in 2017 [turn into] a man who could stand in his truth and live past it with no shame.”
Brettler calls Helmer’s accusation “absurd,” claiming that Pierce and Helmer “went back to Mr. Pierce’s house where they engaged in consensual sex with a third man who they met at the bar.”
“Critically, [Helmer] continued to contact Mr. Pierce in the months following the encounter,” Brettler writes.
“[Helmer] never once mentioned that Mr. Pierce mistreated him, let alone sexually assaulted him.”
On May 4, 2017, less than two months after the alleged assault, Helmer texted Pierce to ask for help in finding an apartment.
Helmer said the texts were sent in desperation after breaking up with his then-boyfriend, whom he had lived with.
“I’m looking pretty urgently,” Helmer said in the text message to Pierce.
“My plans fell through last night, and I need a place to live.”
Regarding Helmer’s police report, Brettler adds that “no one from law enforcement has ever contacted Mr. Pierce or his representatives about [Helmer’s] bogus claims.”
“It’s not like I was in control of anything that was going on. It was very animalistic, taking advantage of someone” –Zein Checri
Tumblr media
Helmer’s police complaint echoed allegations from four other people who spoke to Rolling Stone.
Edward Ramirez, 27, claimed Pierce assaulted him after a night out in Texas in 2018.
Rolling Stone reviewed Instagram conversations between Pierce and Ramirez.
They met at a bar on Sept. 10 and discussed plans to hang out again on the evening of Sept. 11 into the early morning.
But Ramirez, who was then 21 years old, said the night of the 11th took a turn out of his control.
He initially posted his allegations on ATRL, an internet blog space for celebrity culture and analysis, to describe his night. “
Tumblr media
[Pierce] shoved me on the floor in a closet and tried to penetrate me,” Ramirez wrote three days after the alleged assault.
“Honestly, had he just asked, I probably would’ve had consensual sex with him. But getting shoved into a closet and thrown on the floor was just uncomfortable and seemed like an abuse of power.”
“I’m very confident I was clear with my ‘nos.’ I was declining advances,” Ramirez tells Rolling Stone.
“He still kept trying anyway. When I shared the story initially, I was showing grace and mercy that I wouldn’t have shown had I taken more time to process what happened.”
Unlike the other accusers, Ramirez says he provided his own drinks throughout the night.
He adds he didn’t go to the police because he distrusted police authorities in Texas as a Black queer man.
Pierce’s initial defense to BuzzFeed News alleged that any accusers coming forward were motivated by McGarrigle in an attempt to strengthen his civil lawsuit.
But Ramirez, who says he has never spoken to or met McGarrigle, posted his allegations in 2018, four years before McGarrigle initially came forward.
(In his letter to Rolling Stone, Pierce, through his attorney, did not address the settlement or his previous accusations regarding other sources’ connection, or lack thereof, with McGarrigle.)
Pierce and Ramirez also texted after spending the night together.
“Are you still in Dallas?” Ramirez wrote Pierce on Sept. 16, less than four days after the alleged assault.
Ramirez tells Rolling Stone the message was sent to try and coordinate a meeting between Pierce and a drag-queen friend of Ramirez’s.
“So ur going to bed or r we hanging out,” Pierce, who was 37 at the time, asked Ramirez in a text at 4 a.m. on Sept. 17.
Ramirez responded, “Lol hanging out where!! It’s 4am haha.”
Ramirez tells Rolling Stone he believed the messages were a “polite rejection” of Pierce’s continued advances.
Brettler supplied Rolling Stone with three witness statements that could “attest that Mr. Pierce and Mr. Ramirez were never alone together” that night.
(Brettler also supplied a fourth witness to dispute the account of another accuser, Zein Checri.)
The witnesses say they socialized with Pierce and Ramirez in a small apartment.
“During the time spent at my apartment, there were no incidents that I observed or was made aware of which could be construed as sexual assault or any form of misconduct,” one witness tells Rolling Stone.
“The apartment was small and we were all hanging together until we all left,” another witness tells Rolling Stone.
“[Shangela] is one of the kindest, most generous, and hardworking drag queens in the business. And it’s really disgusting to see how people are trying to attack her with these untrue stories.”
Ramirez consistently told Rolling Stone that the alleged assault occurred in a walk-in closet in the bathroom as people were leaving for the night.
CHECRI, 24, ALLEGES Pierce also attempted anal penetration against his will.
“It was very animalistic, taking advantage of someone,” Checri, a London-based musician, says about the alleged encounter in November 2017, when he was 18.
Checri said he met Pierce, then 37, while clubbing in London. Promoters invited Checri and Pierce to an event called “Hype Hop” — a weekly show at London’s Cirque le Soir nightclub – during Pierce’s birthday week.
Tumblr media
Checri alleges Pierce was buying rounds of drinks for a group of people, including Checri.
Checri and Pierce confirmed that they both returned to Pierce’s hotel room at the Clermont London Hotel with a group of people.
Tumblr media
After the other guests left, Checri and Pierce were alone in the room.
Darius Pierce AKA Shangela attends the Academy Awards in 2019.
Eventually, Checri alleged, he was so intoxicated he could not consent to any sexual activity.
Checri claims he eventually threw up in Pierce’s bed.
He claims Pierce made an attempt to insert his penis moments later.
“I just remember very clearly a sequence of events, which was me being on the bed,” Checri says.
“Then being sick on the bed, everywhere. [I remember] feeling it, and seeing it, and smelling it. I very viscerally remember that. And then, whilst that was happening, like, an attempt at penetration.
“I was so ill that I was throwing up in the bed. It’s not like I was in control of anything that was going on,” Checri adds.
“I felt so humiliated by the fact that I felt like an accessory that was available at a certain time.”
Checri told two friends about his encounter, who corroborated his account to Rolling Stone.
Checri says he didn’t go to the authorities because of a lack of trust in the police.
“I noticed that he had gone quite reserved and withdrawn,” one friend tells Rolling Stone.
“It seems like he was totally overwhelmed in the moment. Whether it was physically or through other means, he just fully was not in control, and his agency was taken away from him. It really, really shook him up.”
In a letter to Rolling Stone, Brettler contends that Checri “was the one who pursued a physical relationship with Mr. Pierce — not the other way around.”
“While alcohol was consumed,” Brettler writes, “no one was visibly intoxicated, or impaired to the point that they could not make decisions for themselves.”
In Pierce’s account, as provided by Brettler, Checri and Pierce “made out” before falling asleep and “both men were fully clothed.”
“Mr. Pierce was awakened in the early morning hours to the sound of Mr. Checri vomiting in the bed,” Brettler writes.
“Mr. Pierce then encouraged Mr. Checri to go home. Embarrassed and apologetic, Mr. Checri gathered his belongings and left. Apart from cuddling in bed together before falling asleep, Messrs. Pierce and Checri were not intimate, and did not have sex.“
One witness provided by Brettler tells Rolling Stone he was with Checri and Pierce before he “left to my room next door, and shortly after received a call from [Pierce] asking for help.”
The witness defended Pierce, saying he kicked Checri out after he vomited on the bed.
“Shangela was someone that I looked up to, rooted for, and was inspired by. But what happened to me wasn’t OK.” —RoyLee Soliz
Tumblr media
A fourth accuser, Zachary, 32, also claimed he was jolted awake during a deep inebriation, as Pierce and another man forcefully attempted anal insertion.
“Last thing I remember [at the club] is being told [by Pierce] we were doing two more shots,” Zachary, who was then 23, said about a night with Pierce at Southern Decadence, a six-day event in New Orleans celebrating queer culture during Labor Day weekend in 2015.
Zachary said that he met Pierce at a meet-and-greet following a performance.
(Zachary requested Rolling Stone only use his first name, citing the need to protect his mental health.)
Zachary says Pierce, who was 34 at the time, insisted they drink after the meet-and-greet, where he claims Pierce supplied Zachary with drinks until Zachary said he blacked out.
Zachary says he woke up to Pierce and an unidentified man attempting to penetrate him.
“I heard Shangela say, ‘Stick it in him,’ and I quickly said ‘No,’” Zachary recalls.
“I am pretty sure that [the unidentified man] didn’t do anything, but I passed out again, so I am not positive.”
Zachary, a self-described Drag Race fan and part-time drag queen, says he was originally enamored with Shangela’s celebrity and was starstruck when Shangela showered him with so much attention.
But in 2022, McGarrigle initially posted his allegations on Instagram, and Zachary says he saw the post when McGarrigle’s allegations circulated around social media.
There were many similarities with McGarrigle’s alleged interactions with Pierce, he says.
“It happened to me seven years ago, and I never really thought anything of it. I played it off as a ‘celebrity’ [encounter],” Zachary says.
“I read Danny’s story and [realized] it was something [bigger]. When [Danny’s story] matched almost identically to what happened to me, I was like, ‘Oh, OK. So, that was not great.’”
Two of Zachary’s friends corroborated claims that they all met Pierce at a meet-and-greet and that he provided multiple drinks to Zachary.
When Zachary recounted details of his night the following morning, the friends told Zachary that elements of his description of the night sounded like assault.
They said that, at the time, Zachary remained starstruck as a fan.
“He told us about the night, and at first, he was excited.
He was like, ‘I got to hang out with Shangela,’” one of Zachary’s friends, who was with him through part of the night, tells Rolling Stone.
The friend says he watched Pierce provide Zachary two shots after a night where they were already heavily drinking.
“[Zachary] was maybe 130 pounds at that point. He didn’t need a lot to get drunk. Anything after that was probably too much.”
Brettler says the duo “engaged in consensual sexual acts before falling asleep.”
Zachary and Pierce continued texting each other through April 2016, exchanging pictures of Zachary in drag and talking about potential future hangouts.
“At no time did Zachary ever accuse Mr. Pierce of wrongdoing or any inappropriate conduct,” Brettler writes.
Zachary does not refute his own attempts to maintain a relationship with Pierce after the sexual interaction.
He said that he wanted Pierce’s input as a young drag queen, despite his friends’ attempts to convince him that his night sounded like assault.
IN APRIL 2012, RoyLee Soliz, 32, alleges they met Pierce at a meet-and-greet, this time after a performance at Texas A&M University at Kingsville for a Pride event. Soliz, who was 20 at the time, says Pierce invited them to join him for a non-school-affiliated show at a club called Vault in Corpus Christi.
Soliz says that Pierce, who was then 31 and fresh off two straight appearances on Drag Race, supplied drinks throughout the night, and they ended up in Pierce’s Courtyard Marriott hotel room.
Soliz says they accepted an offer to stay for the night, given Pierce’s status in the queer community.
“Shangela was someone that I looked up to, rooted for, and was inspired by,” Soliz says.
“But what happened to me wasn’t OK, and I don’t want it to happen to anyone else.”
At first, Soliz claims everything seemed to be going well — so well that they told Pierce they wanted to become a drag queen one day.
Pierce applied some makeup and gave Soliz a wig to try on.
Soliz says they initially thought that it was a moment of budding friendship.
But Soliz says that after drinking with Pierce, they passed out in Pierce’s hotel room.
“I just remember trying to sleep and closing my mouth when she tried to put her penis in my mouth,” Soliz says.
“I really didn’t have any strength to tell her to stop or that I didn’t want to have sex with her.… She had gotten me so drunk that I couldn’t say no, and I was in no way mentally OK enough to feel strong or demand her to stop what she was doing.
“I remember I woke up, felt so nasty, and just got in the shower and walked out of that hotel thinking it was my fault for being drunk and staying the night,” Soliz adds.
Soliz says that Pierce had left the hotel before they had woken up but left a letter on the hotel notepad.
Soliz supplied a picture of the letter, which was reviewed by Rolling Stone.
“Good morning — didn’t want to wake you. Keep in touch!” read the letter, signed by “DJ/Shangela.”
“Mr. Pierce has no recollection of meeting RoyLee Soliz, nor does he recognize that individual’s name,” Brettler writes.
“While Mr. Pierce does not necessarily dispute that he met with Mx. Soliz more than a decade ago, he adamantly denies ever engaging in nonconsensual sex of any kind with them, or anyone else.”
“[Pierce is] a huge spokesperson for a community in which they have hurt quite a few people. It is a big relief that, finally, this conversation is starting to happen” –Zein Checri
Another person, Joel, tells Rolling Stone he began working as an off-the-books assistant for Pierce in January 2018.
They remained friends until they stopped communicating in November 2022.
Joel says he and Pierce had a sexual relationship while he simultaneously helped Pierce with various tasks, including packing suitcases, getting ready for events, and packaging merchandise for fans.
“I didn’t have any options at that point,” Joel, who tells Rolling Stone he was unhoused at the time, said.
“I was still living on my friend’s couch. I was without a job, so I was just like, ‘OK, I’m just getting networking gains out of this.’”
At various points, Joel (who is using his first name only, citing his tumultuous relationship with his family over his own drag persona) says he watched Pierce drink with numerous young, skinny men and would tell Joel how attractive the men were.
He tells Rolling Stone he witnessed men — mostly in their early twenties — go with Pierce to the star’s hotel rooms, hot tubs, and friends’ apartments.
“DJ liked to drink,” he says about Pierce.
“The name of the game was how many people could he get drunk. How many people could he get to come to the afterparty in his hotel room, and then they’d still be drinking there.”
In a letter to Rolling Stone, Brettler writes that Pierce was “not surprised” that Joel spoke to Rolling Stone, asserting that “he is not credible; he only wants attention.”
Pierce did not address Joel’s accusations, but disputed that Joel worked for him after 2018.
“At no time after 2018 was [Joel] employed by Mr. Pierce, or any entity affiliated with him,” Brettler writes.
Brettler claims Joel had previously lied about his work and that the two had dated beginning in 2018.
(Joel disputes Pierce’s characterization that they were dating, claiming that “never once was a relationship discussed.”)
After the pair parted ways, according to Brettler, Joel would send “unsolicited selfies and videos of himself posing provocatively and/or engaging in various sex acts” to Pierce.
“As recently as Nov. 3, 2022, [Joel] sent friendly, if not flirtatious, text messages to Mr. Pierce,” Brettler writes, “attaching videos from the night they first met and expressing well-wishes…. [Joel’s] after-the-fact attempt to paint Mr. Pierce as a predator is entirely inconsistent with his private communications with Mr. Pierce.“
THE WEIGHT OF conservative anti-drag bills bothered nearly every source in Rolling Stone’s investigation.
They all spoke out against anti-drag bills, anticipating their allegations could be used as a misguided cudgel for conservative censorship of drag queens.
“I’ve done a lot of story hours myself, and everything that’s being said about it [is] the furthest from the truth,” Zachary adds.
“Drag queens across the country are going out to these places and doing really wonderful things for their communities. [They’re] doing drag-queen story hours to help kids accept themselves, just to accept love.”
“I see people firsthand who are suffering,” Joel adds of drag performers in conservative states.
Instead, everyone who stepped forward with allegations wants Pierce to shoulder accountability as they fight back against homophobic legislation.
“[Pierce is] a huge spokesperson for a community in which they have hurt quite a few people. I would hope that people take this kind of thing seriously,” Checri says.
“It is a big relief that, finally, this conversation is starting to happen.”

Most Controversial Win at the Cheerleading Worlds Ever
In 2019, Prodigy All-stars Midnight was crowned as the world champs of the level 5 Senior Small co-ed, but was it really deserved. Here's a little cheer history for you. Prodigy All Stars comes from Houston, Texas and has been a contender in the coed division for the past 18 years. Their team Midnight has had very extravagant themes and music as well as uniforms to match the theme. So, what happened at worlds? In the level 5 Senior Small co-ed division, there was another competitor named Brandon Senior Black from Brandon All-Stars in Tampa, Florida. When it got down to finals both Midnight and Brandon Senior Black hit their routines without any deductions, and it was all left up to the judges. They finally received their scores, and they were tied. This had happened before with two other teams in a different division, and they were named as co-champions. This would not be the case for them. Midnight was named the level 5 Senior Small co-ed champion while Brandon Senior Black was announced as second. Many think that they should have been named as co-champions and others think that they should be switched. What do you think?

WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION MAGAZINE : FEBRUARY 1999
DM BLONDE AMBITIONS Is everybody beneath Debra McMichael?
Transcript Below!!!
How many of us are Melrose Place fans? Heather Locklear, one of the stars of the show, portrays Amanda Woodward–the beautiful but dangerous blonde who has schemed and connived her way to the top. Several seasons ago, Amanda purchased the apartment complex Melrose Place and found it an unlimited source of lovers, enemies and potential clients for her advertising business. Amanda is extremely demanding and when anyone crosses her there’s hell to pay.
Maybe the producers of the series were thinking of Debra McMichael when they created the character of Amanda Woodward.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Debra grew up with three brothers and a sister in what she calls an average family. Her mother was a nurse and her father worked in a foundry and in her free time the high school cheerleader liked to ride horses on their 10-acre spread. But she dreamed of a career in television and movies.
“Growing up, my parents were very protective, and they didn’t even want me to become a cheerleader,” Debra revealed on a telephone interview. “But I snuck out and did it anyway, and there wasn’t much they could do about itt. From there, I got involved in beauty pageants because I thought it would be fun to dress up in beautiful gowns.”
Debra went on to become Miss Illinois America and Miss Texas USA. In 1985 while on a Chicago flight Debra met the mother of her future husband, then-Chicago Bears football star Steve McMichael. After meeting on a blind date, the two hit it off and eventually married. It must have been like winning the lottery for the Southern belle. In her own words, their lifestyle was like “the Super Bowl every year.” Money May not buy happiness, but it certainly helped Debra open a few doors.
The beauty made certain that wherever Steve went, she was a star as well. As a result of their marriage, Debra was featured on ESPN and HBO, numerous sports talk  programs and Oprah Winfrey’s show on two occasions. In addition, Debra appeared in half a dozen television commercials, two of country singing star George Strait’s music videos and landed roles in films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre IV.
“My second appearance on Oprah was the best,” Debra recalls. “The topic was ‘How do you handle your mate being a sex symbol.’ Well, Steve was the NFL star, but I was the one who was the sex symbol on the show.”
When Steve entered World Championship Wrestling, it wasn’t long before Debra accompanied him. The woman who came from Tuscaloosa with the dream of making it in show business must have fallen in love with the bright lights and the big city. After all, she was turning more heads than her husband.
In the South is where Debra also first met Jeff Jarrett. Without much hesitation, McMichael quickly cast aside her husband for a successful business relationship with Jarrett. Her marriage to Steve deteriorated and they soon divorced. Debra followed her protege to the World Wrestling Federation within a year.
After debuting on RAW, McMichael quickly asserted her power. Proving she was adobe the gyrations of Val Venis when she resisted his advances–something other “ladies” would jump at–Debra turned the table and played Val! While the former beauty queen pretended to be interested in him, Venus left himself wide open to an attack by Jarrett. Other women superstars are no threat to Debra either. After Terri Runnels confronted McMichael over what she had done, the business woman simply shrugged it off like a fly. Once McMichael gets a reaction out of someone–male or female–they’re little more than pawns in her game. In the big picture, the beauty knows that all who cross her will have to pay a price down the road.
Jarrett’s recent battle with Al Snow is another example of how Debra combines intelligence and beauty. After learning that Head had an eye for the ladies–and Debra in particular–McMichael did everything to take advantage of the situation. Soon Head was completely out of the fight, thanks to a shrewd strategy and her provocative attire. Debra knows what men want and using that to her advantage is just one of her many skills.
McMichael is equally clever in her business dealings. According to sources, proper to signing a contract with the Federation Debra made it clear that she would be the only one controlling her business dealings. Thanks to her connections in both entertainment and business, she seems to have dirt on anyone who dares to challenge her. But one wonders what might happen if this beauty queen ever hinges for more. Would she cast aside Jarrett, like her former husband, to further her own career?
After all, Amanda has no problem deceiving her long-time clients for the prospect of power and wealth on Melrose Place. Why would Debra do Otherwise?
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Debra McMichael debuted alongside long-time client Jeff Jarrett on the October 19 RAW from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During Harrett’s bout with Steve Blackman, Al Snow attempted to attack the former Intercontinental Champion, but McMichael served as a beautiful distraction! With Snow and Head completely out of the fight, Debra’s protege was free to lay Al out with his guitar!
On the November 1 Sunday Night HEAT from Austin, Texas, the former beauty pageant winner turned the tables on Val Venis–feigning interest in the adult film star’s gyrations, but actually leaving him wide open to an attack by Jarrett! When Terri Runnels confronted Debra about her actions, the business woman could not have cared less about what Terri had to say! This beauty uses everyone, male and female, to get what she wants! Debra once again showed her lethal mix of brains and beauty on the November 9 RAW from Dallas, Texas during Al Snow’s match. Originally slated to be Snow vs. Tiger Ali, The rich Indian offered up Babu as Al’s opponent instead! During the bout, McMichael appeared at ringside and held Head in her arms, playing up to “their” interest in  beautiful women. Once again, with Head out of the match, Tiger Ali took advantage of the situation, sneaking back into the ring and scoring the win over the J.O.B. Squad leader.

Shattered Hero Rekindled ~ Origins of the Ink Demon : Episode Maka Pt. 16 ~
*keyboard typing*
Seto : (sighs) There has to be some birth certificate from the U.S states. Nevada doesn't have a lot of them since being a barren wasteland that does not have any births. Heck, even coming to Vegas to make everyone born in that place.
Solva : Here's your hot hot hot chocolate. Made from the ancient Aztecs by Quetzalcoatl.
Seto : Thank you, Solva. Did you really think that the one eyed star was gonna capture us? He totally felt for it. Those decoys worked.
*flashback*
Seto : Who knew that using dolls that we made as dummies would fool him that easily? I guaranteed that the one-eyed starfish would easily get him distracted.
*changes back*
Solva : Yeah! What a sucker! Now let's see what those birth certificates of those Soul Eater heroes really are.
Seto : Well, I'm one step closer into my game.
*Cracks fingers*
Seto : Huh? hmmm...That's odd, these birth certificates... these aren't even made by the Nevada Government. These were all made up. But they come from the countries of the real world. But despite Edward Elric's country a world building nation inspired by Europe, all of the heroes and villains of Soul Eater were born on the wrong places.
Solva : So where did they originally come from, exactly?
Seto : Soul Eater Evans, place of origin...Texas. Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson...Place of origin... Virginia. Tsubaki Nakatsukasa...place of origin...Japan.
Solva : Killik Rung, African American born in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, but his actual and current home was Atlanta, the largest city in the south and capital of the State of Georgia.
Seto : Marie Mjolnir, Place of origin, Sweden. But she was not Oceanian, she was originally a cheerleader coach who had that eyepatch after getting herself involved of a football accident in her hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the home of the Minnesota Vikings.
Solva : Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre, her place or origin would be France. Same goes to Harvar
Seto: And Kimial Diehl's place of origin is not the witches realm at all, but the city of Salem.
Solva : Salem? As in the capital of Oregon?
Seto : Yes, but no. Salem's the name for the capital city of Oregon, but it's actually the name of an old city in Massachusetts.
Solva : I was right, so the real location of the witches realm, is that the real location of witches realm is Salem Massachusetts. They've been making contact with the people of Massachusetts for all these years, so that's why they were trying to protect their selves, because the Majo Order were part of the Massachusetts State Government. So that's why Kimial ran away from home, just to protect the boy's legacy. But if she never protected the boy's legacy, why did she wanted to live Nevada, why protecting Shinra's legacy instead of her people's?
Seto : Because, Solva. Shinra wanted to make a fool out of Maka, ever since the Time Eater arrived to their universe, it started to annihilation of making them wish that they were never born in the same universe that they lived for 1000 years. But if it hadn't been for Shinra's heroism and his influence, he would've put their lives in dangers of risking it for to be heroes and even stupider! That's why the world of Soul Eater is weird, plus, the manga itself never received any awards. Now that's superstitious about anything being a manga loser calling it a smash-hit series. There's no fame, no awards, no platinum albums or even records, nothing! It's like they were living in the shadows of their previous lives in the real world.
Solva : So the only to make their selves as heroes of Soul Eater in reality, was to stage the whole thing, but who in the world would even make their selves as heroes to protect the boy's legacy
*Computer Buzzing*
Seto : Hey, what gives?
Darkside Death : *snickers* It was I who made these children as pawns in my plan to make them all heroes and would forever protecting the legacy for all of these years while I hold the planet in the clutches of my hands
Seto : You, Lord Death! You're still a heartless! You ordered all this!
Darkside Death : Not me, JK...It was me.
Seto : So why are you doing this?
Darkside Death : Revenge...for the Time Eater. Allow me to give you his demonstration.
[Subspace Ver.3 plays]
Seto : Hey, that's Shinigami! You put him down this instant!
Solva : Hey, but aren't there two Lord Deaths?
Seto : But...which one is the Lord Death?
Darkside Death : Now do you remember? Someone from before?
*Shinigami's face gets taken off revealing to be Shotaro*
Seto : It can't be! That's...!
Solva : The Dokeshi and second hero of the Ohkuboverse.
Seto : Shotaro!
Darkside Dark : Three years ago. This kid was wanting to expose my creator's world to uncover secrets that I have been doing it the past years. He helped them to uncover the truth and now he is my slave, a slave that will definitely benefit to all of Mankind.
Seto : What you're doing to Shotaro is insane! You were using him for your personal cover ups. You tricked him to believe that Makes wanted to attend the school, but she didn't. She had been in a coma for around one year ago. That's how her story took place, all nothing but a dream. All this time, we thought that she was a hero to Nevada, but was just some random kid who does not know about being a hero. If she would've followed Shinra' footsteps of being like one, she would've risked her own life fighting for her ideals.
Solva : Do you know how much of it for us to make us heroes to do the dirty work for you? I think not. You're just jealous that you wanted to put the entity name Demon Vibe out of commission. You got some nerves calling yourself the ruler of the cosmos. What a joke for a title! There is only one ruler of the universe and there could be only that controls everything!
Seto : We hope you like to see your face red before a girl name Homura Akemi creates the new era in the 2010s. You'll be best lie dead at master's feet.
Darkside Death : Is that so, you little pipsqueak? Well, in that case...this whole planet will be the death of everything that you know and love! You will die by the hands of my deceased son, Asura!
*laughs evilly*
Seto : Oh yeah?! Then go put a sock in it!
*Smashes Computer*
Seto : You'll regret this., heartless son of the devil! That is why I promised.
Solva : *sweatdrop icon* I'm getting a newer one.
*scene changes*
Seto : Hey, Maka. You alright there, kid? Maka?
Maka : Oh hey, Deathless. How are you feeling today?
Seto : Well, I'm basically fine in my own ways, I'm feeling a little light headed. I wonder how long you would surpass the greatest shonen trope with the power of that friendship crap? I'm not even going to say it, but...it's a great opportunity that someone is going to keep my package cleaned for delivery, over and out.
Maka : Really? Did you check your mail today?
Seto : I always checked twice. Let's just I checked the mail every day or every night.
Maka : So...I was wondering something. What does it like to be alone for some reason.
Seto : Well, it's never to be alone when you don't have with somebody, there might be others who would care for you and then you won't have to be lonely anymore. Well, I'm certainly wondering you would seek the future when this girl named Homura Akemi decides to create the new era in the 2010s. I won't last this long, I might get back on my feet whether the new era is going to be made by Homura or that will have to wait. You never know what hits ya.
Maka : I see...
Seto : Well, for a blonde girl that knows how to deal with Shounen Protags, I've become one like everyone does, I heard about what happened to the Ohkuboverse. It was destroyed along time. But I need you ask one important questions about your life and story. As Deathless or needless, as an apprentice to the great lord of death himself, Grim the Hedgehog, I am going to give you a simple task on taking me to a duel on the beach.
Maka : The beach? Take me there!
*teleports*
"EMERALD COAST"
*waves crashing+seagulls squawking*
[Big Fishes at Emerald Coast by Jun Senoue]
Maka : Where am I? What is this place?
Seto : This is Emerald Coast. A nice fun beach that we like to play in the waters, but this is just Emerald Coast.
Maka : Then why is it called Emerald Coast?
Seto : Duh. Everyone knows Emerald Coast, Emerald Coast is in Sonic's world, while this is the Emerald Coast is where we are currently at.
Maka : Why not to go to the other Emerald Coast.
Seto : That's because there's a giant killer whale that chases a Blue Hedgehog on a wooden bridge.
Maka : Oh. Well in that case. I'll accept your challenge...
*takes off clothes to reveal her bikini*
Maka : by having a Duel on the Beach!
Seto : That settles it!
[Emerald Beach by Kenichi Tokoi]
Seto : Let's hop to it!
Runblebee/Announcer : VOLLEYBALL MATCH!
Seto : I can't wait to play some Volleyball. This is my first time.
Maka : I haven't played this game in a while. So...This is my first time of playing Volleyball. I won't lose this match.
Seto : Alright, First serve!
Solva : Hey, don't we mind to join in?
Seto : Solva!
Eve : Hey, I am all ears, so I am tagging along with her.
Seto : Yo, Eve!
"Eve Neuschwanstein : Heroic Doppelganger"
Eve : Last one wins the match is a rotten genius!
Seto : Serve up!
Master Hand/Announcer : Go! *blows whistle*
*Begins the match*
Seto : Here goes! *Hits Volleball*
Eve : Not too shabby! *Hits ball* Toss!
Maka : Right! Spike!
*Spikes the ball*
Rublebee/Announcer : Ball in!
Eve : Yes!
Seto : Not bad. But not good as it looks. Now it's my turn! Here it comes! Serve up! *Hits ball*
Solva : Just go for it! Spike! *Spikes the ball*
Eve : Woah! *hits the ball* You call that a spike? This should be...an ATTACK! *Spikes the ball*
Runblebee : Ball in!
*Whistle blowing*
Eve : Aced it!
Maka : Not bad! I bet you can handle a single flinch to go easy on the ball.
Eve : Yes siree! I'm hoping that you would be in a lot of heat!
Seto : Ready for our personal close up?
Solva : I'm totally Winging it! Second serve. Here I Go!
*during third set*
Eve : Alright! It's your turn!
Maka : Alrigh. I got this. Serve up! *Hits the ball*
Eve : My go! *Hits the ball*
Solva : Time for secret weapon attack!
*hits ball*
Solva : Right! Haven't used my secret technique!
*uses gravitation technique on the ball*
Maka : Ehh?
Eve : Hey! What?
Seto : Heh ha!
*ball lands*
Runblebee : BALL IN!
Eve : Hey! No fair! That's cheating!
Seto : Finders keepers! That's my way to hanging!
Eve : Alrigh then. We're on the final set, partner. This time, we do it right...for real!
Maka: Hmph!
Eve : Time for Eve Neuschwanstein to go... doppelganger mode!
*Turns into Maka*
Maka (Eve) : Looks like we're doubles now!
Maka : We could be a perfect stunt double!
Two Makas : Hey, guys. Think you can spot out the difference? There's only two of us and we know how you beat this one out!
Seto : Neuschwanstein, you can change one's appearance? Yeah right. But I'm not falling for that one!
Maka (Eve) : Hey, Kid! You go first!
Maka : Alright! My perfect shot! This would be a great time to spike up! Huuut!
*Toss ball*
Maka: I call this one...The Maka style shot!
*uses special shot to spike ball*
Runblebee : GAME SET, AND MATCH...Maka and Eve!
Eve : Hahaha! We won!
Solva : Unbelievable! Nobody in the beach would ever beat us in a duel before!
Eve : Way to win the game, partner! You finally got some skills!
Maka : To me, I can finding it that this turned out to be fun. Hey, would you give us a hand and bring the volleyball back to us?
Seto : Sure, but I don't see where ball went.
Sir Halberd Knight : You dropped this, girlie. Is this your ball?
Seto : Hey, thanks so much. I've been lookibg for it to get it back and... Huh? Who are you?
Solva : Where did you come from.
Sir Halberd Knight : Perhaps that we would like to have a talk.

## Super Bowl VII: A Night Remembered (and Regretted)
**[SCENE START]**
**EXT. SUPER BOWL VII - HOUSTON, TEXAS - 1978 - DAY**
A sea of orange and blue jerseys. The buzz of the crowd is a symphony of anticipation. Cheerleaders in sparkling costumes. The Super Bowl halftime show is about to begin.
**[MONTAGE START]**
**INT. SUPER BOWL VII STAGE - 1978 - DAY**
A spotlight pierces the darkness. PAUL WILLIAMS, a mop of blonde hair, dressed in a sparkling football uniform, takes the stage.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'Hey, everybody! How's it going in the Dome tonight?'
The crowd roars in response. Paul raises his hand in a football gesture, a wide smile on his face.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'Tonight, we're gonna celebrate the spirit of the game! The grit, the sweat, the glory!'
He strikes a dramatic pose, one hand on his hip, the other holding a microphone.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'You know, there's a lot of pressure on these guys out there, fighting for every yard…'
He sings the first verse of a song, his voice straining in the wide-open space of the stadium:
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'Out on the field, under the lights so bright
They give it their all, with every ounce of might
Every play's a battle, every yard a fight
Gotta break through the line, gotta take flight…'
He dances in a flamboyant Broadway style, complete with elaborate hand gestures and exaggerated facial expressions. The camera cuts to the crowd, some staring in confusion, others laughing, many simply bewildered.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'The quarterback, he throws a spiral so true
The receiver, he leaps, catching it in view
The crowd roars its approval, it's a sight to see
A symphony of cheers, for the world to decree…'
He hits a high note, the microphone catching the strain in his voice.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'This is the game, the ultimate test
Where courage and skill are put to the test
So raise your voices, let the cheering begin
The Super Bowl's here, and the game's about to win!'
He ends with a flourish, bowing to the crowd. The camera zooms in on a lone fan, a young boy, with a bewildered expression.
**[MONTAGE END]**
**EXT. SUPER BOWL VII - HOUSTON, TEXAS - 1978 - DAY**
The crowd cheers. Paul, exhausted but exhilarated, takes a bow, his smile beaming.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'I did it! I did it! I sang for the Super Bowl!'
**[SCENE END]**
**[SCENE START]**
**INT. PAUL WILLIAMS' APARTMENT - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - 2000 - NIGHT**
Paul, now sober and with a more mature face, watches the Super Bowl on TV.
**(NARRATOR)**
Years passed. The glitter and glamour of the 70s faded, leaving behind the harsh reality of addiction. Paul, finally sober, found himself in a new world. A world where the memories of his past were a constant companion, sometimes a friend, more often a ghost.
Paul watches the halftime show, a modern pop star performing for the crowd, the spectacle a stark contrast to his own performance years ago. He sighs, a wave of embarrassment washing over him.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'That was horrible. Absolutely terrible…'
He reaches for a bottle of water, taking a long sip.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'I was a mess. I didn't even know what I was doing. And that outfit! What was I thinking?'
He shakes his head, a faint smile playing on his lips.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'But it was a high. A huge, crazy high...'
He looks at the ceiling, a wistful expression on his face.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'I was so lost, so desperate for that feeling. It didn't matter what I did, as long as I felt something. And I guess, in a way, I did. For that moment, I was on top of the world.'
He looks out the window, the city lights twinkling below.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'But it was all a facade. A mirage in the desert of my addiction. It wasn't real. It couldn't last.'
He turns back to the TV, the modern pop star singing. He watches for a moment, a flicker of envy in his eyes.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'I wonder what it feels like to be up there now. To be sober, to be free. To be loved for what you are, not for what you do.'
He takes another sip of water, a slow, deliberate movement.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'I guess I'll never know. But I'm grateful for this moment. For the clarity, for the peace.'
He smiles, a genuine, heartfelt smile.
**(PAUL'S VOICE, O.S.)**
'It's not a high. It's not a dream. It's just life. And that's enough.'
**[SCENE END]**

Senior Elite was Robbed
So, if you did not know about The Cheerleading Worlds being canceled in 2020, well now you do. That year, it seemed like all the teams were just on their a-game, and I wonder what would have happened if Worlds had happened that year. So, here is a little cheer history for you. Senior Elite comes from the gym Cheer Extreme in Kernersville North Carolina. They're in the senior large all-girl division, which, while only having four teams, is one of the most competitive in all-star cheer. The first year that Senior Elite won worlds was in 2010. Then proceeded to go back-to-back in 2012 and 2013. After 2013, Senior Elite hit their Worlds drought which would have them placed as runner up. I personally believe that the 2019-2020 season was their year. It usually works because whoever wins NCA, a huge competition held in Texas, is likely to win Worlds. That season at NCA, they were the grand champions of their division. I genuinely believe Senior Elite was going to win worlds that year.
