Pop music and Iran are not things you would immediately link together, especially not if your frame of cultural reference is based in the Western world. In actuality, the country of Iran has an incredibly rich music history dating back thousands of years. The output of Iran was incredibly influential on surrounding areas across West Asia and the Middle-East. In more recent times, Iran witnessed a blossoming pop music scene, with the pioneering sounds of Googoosh blazing the way.

Born as Faegheh Atashin in 1950 Tehran, Googoosh began singing at a very young age. After starring in various Persian films during the 1960s, her twenties saw her devote herself almost entirely to pop music. Blending the traditional sounds of West Asia with a kind of 1960s pop sensibility, Googoosh quickly became a cultural icon in Iran; women across the country rushed to copy her hairstyle and fashion sense, characterised by mini-skirts and bright colours.

Constantly pushing the boundaries of pop music and wowing audiences with her incredible tones, Googoosh reached the peak of her popularity during the 1970s. In addition to her legions of fans inside Iran, she became notable worldwide, with tracks like ‘Talagh’ earning her acclaim throughout much of West Asia and parts of Europe. Her chanson-style of performing, evoking images of Edith Piaf, often centred around themes of love and loss, proving to have universal appeal even among non-Persian speakers.

Tragically, the success witnessed by Googoosh during the 1970s would not be long-lasting. In 1979, the Iranian revolution saw the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty, to be replaced by an Islamic theocracy, a ruling government which prevails to this day as the Islamic Republic of Iran. Under this authoritarian regime, female performers were outlawed. While music is not inherently haram, music which may cause temptation is seen as an evil – leading all female voices to be banned. A common phrase used to justify the performance ban was the Arabic “sawt al-mar’a `awra,” or, “the voice of a woman is a shameful thing”.

Rather than fleeing her native lands in favour of a country with more accepting cultural scenes, Googoosh remained in the Islamic Republic of Iran, “out of love for [her] homeland”. In many ways, Googoosh acted as the perfect encapsulation of everything the 1979 revolution sought to banish: she was a fearless woman performing Western-inspired pop songs while bedecked in mini-skirts and vibrant colours. Nevertheless, she remained in Iran following the events of 1979. Retiring from performance – though, not by choice – Googoosh remained under the authoritarian rule of Iran until the new millennium, when she left the country for Canada, permitted to tour by the reformist presidency of Mohammad Khatami.

Recording material and performing live for the first time in over 20 years, the comeback of Googoosh was glorious. Selling out venues across the world in testament to her universal appeal, her 2000 tour came to a close with a date in Dubai on the eve of Nowruz (Iranian New Year); much of the audience had traversed the Persian Gulf from Iran to see their country’s cultural hero perform in the flesh.

For many, Googoosh is the singer of countless ear-worm pop tunes from the 1970s, but the Iranian singing sensation represents so much more. Googoosh represents the vibrancy and empowerment of the pre-revolutionary period in Iran, a time of real excitement among the country’s youth, characterised by trailblazing artistic movements which were later destroyed by the revolutionary state. Remaining active to this day, with a date at Wembley Arena due next month, Googoosh remains a beloved figure around the world, and an important point in the rich timeline of Iranian music.

Ianto Jones: The Suit that Started it all.

Smirk beats tears, but both suits were lined with deception. Here we see Ianto for the first time, when he welcomes a pizza bearing Gwen to the Torchwood hub. Although it's not so vibrant as his later suits (suitably for a Ianto still hiding himself from the world and his team) the red tie adds some flair and hints at the danger and passion that lurks beneath the surface of the information centre, and the man himself.

Jack Harkness: The Jacket

Jack might be a dad several times over, but he isn't one for Dad clothes. We don't see this jacket on Jack much, but it fits into his military/pilot aesthetic. First episode, it makes sense that the writers are trying outfit choices that don't pop up again (for example we never see Gwen in that bowler hat that she wears in her first scene, can't imagine why). But on re-watch, it kind of suits who Jack is to the audience right now. This is Jack after we knew in him Doctor Who, an older, different Jack. It's also Jack before we get to know him. We're seeing him through Gwen's eyes, and here he's an enigma. So having him in a costume that suits his vibe, but isn't familiar, feels right.

Owen Harper: Sacrificial Scrubs

Owen, who is introduced to us as not always the nicest of blokes, gets steadily nicer as the show goes on (while still retaining his Owen-ess), is suitably dressed all in white here, the scrubs catching the light in an appropriately angelic light.

As the team doctor, this is isn't the only time we see Owen in medical scrubs. But the scrubs in this scene at worn as a doctor, or even a patient. They're the clothes of a corpse in waiting. This whole sequence is one of the most heart wrenching in the entire show, and that's saying something. Martha and Jack grimly prepping for the embalmment, Toshiko silently watching them as they prepare the tools for the death of the man she loves, Gwen helping him change and grasping for a chance at one final hug, Owen running his fingers through her hair while he can still feel them, and Ianto joining Gwen in forming an honour guard as Owen walks to his death.

"Is that a dress Tosh!"

This dress is introduces in a great sequence of Tosh dressing. We don't often see Tosh at home, and it's great seeing an episode from Tosh's pov for once. The care Tosh shows in getting dressed in this episode tells us without telling us that Tosh is excited, and she's getting ready for something special. When we know there's a hunky WW1 soldier on the way, we don't need it spelled out to us that he and Tosh share a special bond. The dress is pretty and feminine and in Tosh's power colour, purple (we're gonna see a lot of purple in the days ahead).

Also, it's worn over jeans!

@yourmyonlyhope makes a great comment here about the discussion in the show, where Tommy talks all about the changing fashions. This look is so of its time, and it's great watching Tommy talk about mini-skirts and all the other rapid changes in fashion he's witnessed in his flash tour through time, with Tosh in her early 2000s glory standing testament to the changing times. With trends changing so quickly, the writers probably did know that future watchers would see Tosh in a dress and jeans and find the costume dated, so as well as being a great bit of backstory and character exploration for Tommy, that scene and this dress have a lovely bit of meta going on.

Gwen Cooper: The Tea Windbreaker

Gwen mostly wears darker colours, with a few notable exceptions. In this episode, the rest of the team are in dark, earthy colours, and Gwen stands out in this teal windbreaker. A non-viewer who knows nothing about Torchwood could look at a pic of the all together, and point to the newbie who is about to get their innocence shredded. In a show like Torchwood, when a character turns in something pale and clean and on the opposite end of the colour spectrum to red, they're just screaming out to get covered in blood. Although Gwen's already seen some messed up stuff, Countrycide is the episode where she confronts just how cruel humans can be. Her entire world view, her faith in humanity, is thrown in a woodchipper. This is the jacket of a girl on the precipice of a full self-destructive spiral.

This week’s random Disney hotel is the very exclusive Shades of Green. Why is it so exclusive? Because only military personnel, current and retired, can stay there (you can actually find a more detailed list of eligible guests on the hotel’s website). It is actually owned by the United States Department of Defense.

While I could have gone for a military-inspired outfit, I felt it would be too obvious. Instead, I decided to take the name of the resort literally and create an outfit using only different shades of green. It was a challenge, but I was determined to make it work.

To start, I went into my virtual closet to find the perfect green pieces. Unfortunately, finding enough green pieces was not an easy task. I eventually found a gorgeous green Aje skirt that has a lovely shade of green. I paired it with an Oscar de la Renta top in an earthy/mossy tone, which creates a nice contrast to the shamrock green of the skirt.

I selected a simple and elegant pair of shoes in a medium-dark shade of green-cyan that complement the skirt perfectly. To complete the look, I picked a fabulous purse that features many shades of green and is a statement piece that ties the whole outfit together.

Finally, I added accessories for the finishing touch. I chose a necklace that reminded me of dog tags (my only hint of a military theme) and is a simple yet elegant piece that adds personality to the outfit, as well as a headband that completed the polished outfit perfectly.
