So let me tell y’all a little story that I found myself reflecting on after that last post.

Let me tell you a bit about a wee little 18-21 year old fangirl named Anne. Anne had never been a fangirl before. But she was going through a hard transition in life. High school ended, college began. She lost all her friends. She lived with her parents, took classes at the local community college, spent 2 hours every day riding the bus home from college, and then spent evenings working full time at Blockbuster Video.

But she happened to be home the night that a silly little television show about aliens and romance started airing on TheWB, and it hooked her. By the end of the 4th episode, she was on the internet looking for people to discuss it with and learning that fanfiction existed.

By the end of the winter, she was getting off work at 1am, going home, and then writing fanfiction herself for hours before going to sleep.

Fandom was different back then. There really wasn’t a whole lot of talk about representation, overall, because there were no characters that weren’t white, straight, etc. No one really talked about how the show whitewashed the books. We were aware, but we just didn’t question that stuff back then. Plus most of us looooooved Shiri Appleby.

I remember when Season 2 came around, there were a lot of unhappy people. Max and Liz didn’t feel right anymore. Tess was hanging around more. End of the World happened and everyone felt awful and heartbroken about it. I remember being in Covina with a bunch of friends visiting filming locations when the spoilers broke about Max sleeping with Tess, and we all lost it. We posed in front of a medical facility that had a “chest pain” sign out front to prove that we were HEARTBROKEN.

But I guess the thing is that when these moments in storytelling happen, I often become an optimist. Because I as CERTAIN it wasn’t true (it was true). I was SURE Max and Liz would get back together and end up together (and they did). But my fandom friends were so upset that once again, for the second time in about a year and a half...I lost all my friends. Because they didn’t want to “hurt” me with their negativity. (Them walking away hurt 1000000% times more). But eventually I found new fandom friends that loved me and it was all okay.

I understand being hurt. I understand being upset. I try not to let it overtake me because I am only in this fandom (and that fandom, and other fandoms) because I WANT to love this stupid story. And if things aren’t going the way I want them to enough that it hurts my heart *coughDoctorWhocough*, then I walk away.

As a funny little final interlude, I will share my most unpopular opinion regarding OG Roswell: I hated Michael Guerin. I was infamous for it. Everyone knew that I couldn’t stand him. He rarely made an appearance in my fic. I didn’t like his relationship with Maria. I don’t think love should be based on bickering. It became such common knowledge and such a running gag among my friends that I was a Michael hater, that in my favorite/best OG fic, I tongue-in-cheek wrote Michael as spending the entire fic on his couch watching hockey, which both fit with canon and made me not have to deal with him. It still amuses me to see because I knew exactly what I was doing and it cracked me up. Hell, it still cracks me up.

The thing is...fandom has changed a lot since then. Everyone is a whole lot smarter. The world is a lot more “woke”. People get worked up hard about representation and identification and problematic characters and plots in a way that they just didn’t back in the OG days. I found myself thinking today that if I had the same reaction to RNM Guerin as I did to OG Guerin, I straight up wouldn’t be able to admit it publicly or be this open about it without getting heavily criticized or even blacklisted by the majority of this fandom.

I guess my point is, even though we’re smarter and stronger and have better minority representation, it’s important to remember that we’re not all the same person. We don’t all see things the same way. We don’t identify the same with every character. We don’t PROJECT onto the characters in the same way. Everyone deserves to say their piece and SHOULD, frankly. That’s the point of fandom. But just remember that we’re all real people with our own ideas and feelings and wants and needs.

And don’t forget. Fandom is supposed to be FUN. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong and I’d highly encourage you to reconsider your priorities.

Take whatever you don’t like and stick them on a couch in the corner watching hockey. Or whatever you need to do to get them out of your headspace.

Cultivate your own perfect fandom experience.

And treat each other with love and respect. 💚💛

tessa moved to holiday when she was five years old with her parents.

tess did super well in school. like, ridiculously well. her parents were always insanely supportive of her and her dreams. yet when she graduated she still had no idea what she wanted to do.

she went to college at nyu the following year and it took her a little while to figure out what she wanted to do, so she picked art bc she enjoyed it and it turns out she loved it. she used to draw all the time as a kid and doodle in notebooks and she actually ended up being really good at it, so that’s what she studied.

she works at the movie theatre in town but she does art on the side.

her mother is also still a photographer so she traveled around the world with her a lot and used to draw things when she did

she usually goes by tessa but is totally fine with tess unless you don’t know her well. she can get very bad tempered, too, especially on low sleep, so basically don’t mess with her when she hasn’t had at least seven hours of sleep

other than that she’s pretty happy. very sarcastic. very sassy. very bubbly. she’s very friendly but she’s also a bit standoffish of certain people depending on their vibe.

she’s very sentimental when it comes to family and friends and if she ever gives you a gift, you better love the heck outta it bc she put a shit ton of thought into it.

there was no Danny Nucci name in the opening, right ? They fanally decided to get rid of him... ? It's funny I thought "no Mike means no Ana"... but you know, Gabe is there so they can hang out in Stef and Lena's house while they are not there.

Correct. I have been suspecting this might be the case for a while. His time has been cut each and every season. Last couple, he’s been on as much as other side characters. I do think that Freeform’s budget has really cut his time down as they extend into season 5. He also was not in the cast pictures. I believe that they cut the money and insisted on one less regular. I think letting Danny direct is a concession to the fact that he is no longer a regular. There is an outside possibility that Mike leaves at some point. Or maybe he’ll be listed as a regular on the episodes he is in.

Ana is so thirsty for Gabe. I mean really. There was no need for her to be all up his ass at their house. Why was she there? If I was Mike I wouldn’t like that at all. Here’s the thing, like I’ve always said. I would take care of my aging mom (dad’s dead) till the end with pretty much any disease, except if they had dementia and were trying to hurt me. No one deserves abuse. If a condition is causing irrational behavior it has to be treated. I saw a real life show where a man had a stroke and changed his personality so much he ended up murdering his wife, his adult daughter and his grandchild. It’s no joke and Jesus, intentionally or not, is going to hurt Lena. I see Lena running towards Jesus and Brandon fighting, it’s not going to end well.

And sure Gabe was effective this time because he’ just about the only person physically able to stop him. That isn’t a solution. Emma can’t possibly deal with him like that. So what Gabe did is not a solution. Lena is right as always, he needs to be able to manage or he can’t live with them. It’s just that simple.

Honestly, what’s the point of asking how people are feeling and to discuss the show if all you actually want an echo chamber of how amazing the show is? Don’t ask for opinions if you don’t like them. They aren’t turning a deaf ear to their audience, just a certain segment. I can’t say that I would have liked the show to have ended in s1. I just wish that in what could possibly be their final year, they would focus on their main characters. This was essentially a Gabe and Ana episode and that’s wrong. No matter how you slice it. Even when they have done that for Girl’s united, I could at least say, well they really haven’t had a voice. Gabe’s woes are like the stuff of every tv show novel. Daddy regret. Heck we’ve had enough of that with Mike.

For people who don’t understand how Callie could choose her moms over her rich bio daddy. Lena took one look in her eyes, saw her soul and took her home, straight from Juvy. Stef saw her value after just like a day. Bio daddy needed a DNA test to even see if he wanted to get invested. Tell me which connection would feel more real to you? No worries though, in case you missed it, Robert is right there disciplining Callie, though I am sure he takes a crack at Stef and Lena’s parenting.

Yeah, it wasn’t just like their point of view, it was entirely their episode. It is disrespectful to lesbian moms in particular. Here’s the thing, I don’t know where they are going with this. Even if they have a point to make, the visuals have already been made. You’ll have tons of people swooning over Jesus’ dad. The only thing I liked in an interview with Noah, was him saying biological father, instead of the “dad” the insensitive interviewer kept using. These visuals, these words will be the ones that stick with the people, and there are many, who think lesbians can’t raise kids without male role models.

Well, they supposedly change the tone next episode, but we will see. I still see this show as too depressing and too unhappy. Ahh, yes, no, we don’t know that. I think there was a misunderstanding. We are saying, Tess is the woman Stef cuddled with on the couch when she was a teen. CUDDLED in the past, not going to cuddle with. I agree that Stef would never do that. We just know it’s going to bring up interesting issues, especially if Lena is frustrated with being a stranger in her own house as the bio takeover continues.

I am glad that least Stef was the one parenting Callie. Yay! It was needed, but it did feel cold but behind it was a lot of love. Stef will get emotional next episode. I am sure we’ll get some scene with them later on in the season that is warmer.
