County Fair Jitters (Tommy Conlon x Reader) [Request]
hooray requests!!! could I get a tommy conlon x reader drabble? maybe a nervous first date/first kiss at the county fair? something just nice and sweet since our boy has to act all tough all the time—Requested by anon
Soft Tommy had me feeling some kind of way, anon, thank you!
Warnings: none
Gif Source: badassbaker
Tommy tugged up the sleeves of his Henley, exposing his corded forearms. Then he tugged them back down. Did he really need to expose his arms? Or was that some stupid macho thing he had picked up from other guys in the military? You knew what he looked like. He didn’t need to put it on display.
Then again, if you dressed up for him, you would be putting yourself on display. Shouldn’t he do the same to make it fair?
It was just a county fair, though…
Brendan stuck his head tentatively into the room. “You okay?”
Tommy grunted yes.
“You look…agitated.”
Tommy clenched and unclenched his fists, stared at his reflection in the mirror over the sink.
“Is he done? I need to use the bathroom.” Tess’s voice echoed from the hallway.
“He’s nervous,” Brendan called over his shoulder.
Tess’s footsteps sounded against the wooden floor. Her head popped over Brendan’s shoulder. “You look great!”
Tommy shifted uncomfortably, unused to the praise.
“You’ll be fine,” Tess continued, pushing her way into the bathroom to herd him out. “You’re a catch and she would be crazy not to like you.”
Brendan caught Tommy’s elbow as the door shut behind him. “Nerves are normal.”
Tommy knew what nerves were. He had had them tested and refined by his experiences in Afghanistan. But what he felt didn’t match up to that adrenaline-surging feeling. He actually felt like he could be ill, his stomach flipping and his throat tight.
“What if…”
Brendan had to lean in to hear Tommy.
“What if she’s…scared of me?”
Brendan pulled back, blinking in surprise. For a moment, he glimpsed the young brother he had left behind all those years before, vulnerable and unsure.
“She said yes to the date, Tommy,” he said, placing a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “She wouldn’t have if she didn’t like you.”
Tommy shook his head. You had been at one of his fights once. He had seen you in the crowd just before he took to pummeling a bastard into the mat. The look on your face had bothered him for days. You had seemed horrified and yet pleased he had won. But the way you had flinched when he had beat the man down stayed with him, plaguing him.
You could have said yes because you were afraid of what he would do if you said no.
“You’re going to be late.”
Nodding again, Tommy grunted his thanks and headed out the door.
~~
Fall was steadily encroaching, vibrantly colored leaves kicking up along the sidewalks and streets as the cool autumn breeze swept through the city. Though he felt fine in his two layers, Tommy still shivered as he watched you step out of your house. You had bundled up a bit more than him, wearing a thicker sweater that was a size bigger than you needed. The way it gently hugged your hips and hinted at your soft figure made Tommy swallow thickly. He tugged up one of his sleeves unconsciously.
“Hi.” You smiled at him, the action genuine. Tommy’s chest constricted.
“Hello,” he answered. “You look nice.”
“So do you.” You chuckled and stepped out onto the sidewalk. “Shall we?”
Nodding, Tommy led you down the street. The county fair was a few blocks away, an easy distance to walk. For the first few minutes, you both walked in silence. Tommy couldn’t decide what to say, words failing him as they always did.
You reached out suddenly and looped your arm through his, the skin of your wrist grazing against his exposed forearm deliciously. Tommy tried not to stumble as you pressed lightly against him.
“I’ve never been to the fair,” you admitted, breaking the silence. “They weren’t a big deal back home.”
“They’re fun,” Tommy hazarded.
“What’s your favorite thing about it?”
Eating funnel cake dusted with powdered sugar with his mother. He almost didn’t say it, preferring to keep it to himself, but he heard himself answer, “Eating funnel cake.”
“Yeah? I’ve never had that. So many firsts to try.”
Tommy stuck his hand in his pocket, drawing you closer to him, and ranked all the things he felt were the quintessential fair experience.
~~
Night descended before Tommy was aware of its gradual arrival. He had been too consumed with showing you around the fairgrounds, of getting you to try all the things he deemed worthy of your time. You played games and laughed whether you won or lost, buoying his spirits. You seemed so happy that he was cursing the sun for setting and the hour for getting so late.
You stuck close to him as the evening chill descended. The last stop he insisted on was at the funnel cake stand. He bought one to share, you both having filled up on corn dogs and deep-fried peanut butter pickles. The latter shocked you with how delicious it was despite the grease.
Tommy and you huddled beneath one of the lights erected around the fairgrounds. You enjoyed each bite of the funnel cake with relish, audibly expressing your delight.
Tommy fought against the urge to fidget. He had enjoyed himself thoroughly beside your side, elated by the way your face lit up and how you reacted with almost childlike wonder at everything. But the nerves had returned as he watched you eat the cake, your lips coated white with powdered sugar. An ache spread deep within him.
You glanced up at him, feeling his stare. “What?” Your tongue darted out, dragging across your lip to pick up the sugar.
Heart thundering in his chest, Tommy found himself leaning down, his nose brushing your cheek as he made his way to your mouth. He gently pressed his lips against yours, the powdered sugar trickling onto his tongue. You responded immediately, your mouth parting to allow him better access. His tongue swept across your lower lip, licking up the sugar with an eagerness that surprised him.
When you pulled back, you stared at him wildly, breathless. Another silly smile pulled at your mouth, your eyes alight.
“Best county fair ever,” you whispered, leaning up to kiss him again.
Tommy dared to smile against your questing lips, his nerves fizzing with excitement as he pulled you into his arms, his nervousness gone.

So…
Race is a typical teenager, at fifteen years old. He hates school, he’s considered lazy and stubborn day in and day out and he plays guitar in a garage band that he and his friends put together. He really loves music, fashion and makeup.
Jack is his dad, his teenage dad, the one that was branded a failure when he got Race’s mother pregnant when they were fifteen, opted to raise the boy alone rather than put him in foster care, get another girl pregnant with his daughter Smalls only a few years later only to lose the mother to cancer and become a single dad with two kids from two different mothers and then get married officially to a man named David who died just a year prior to this story in a car crash. Jack is criticized for not only having Race when he was fifteen, but also having an interracial child with another women and being bisexual and having another man help him raise a child.
Eventually, though, Jack manages to fall in love again, with a woman named Katherine, who he actually ends up proposing to her and they start planning a wedding.
This story starts on a Thursday, the day before Jack and Katherine’s rehearsal dinner, when Race finds out his band is up for a really big audition during the rehearsal dinner. Race not only gets two detentions that day, one for calling out his teacher, Mr. Snyder, who refuses to talk with him about getting his grades up even though he knows he deserves better, and another for hitting Oscar Delancey, his worst nemesis, in the back of the head with a volleyball after the other boy had been tormenting him for years.
When Race comes home, he finds that his door has been removed from his room. Jack has always been strict with him, not wanting his son to make the same mistakes he did, and he tells Race that his principal called and told him about the detentions and the F he has in Snyder’s class. Race says that he needs his door and Jack tells him that privacy is a privilege that Race has lost.
Race is pissed and constantly finds his little sister snooping around his things because he doesn’t have a door to keep her out.
After a long argument about how Race has to earn back door by proving to Jack that he can trust him again, Katherine suggests they go out for dinner and after a small temper tantrum from Race, they finally go, only for Race to reveal at dinner that he would like to go to an audition instead of Jack’s rehearsal dinner.
This sparks a big fight that the entire restaurant can hear and Race runs off to the bathroom, only for Jack to follow him. Before Jack gets a door slammed in his face, a blind woman comes up to them and hands them letters made out to them in their names. Too worked up to think much of it, they just take the letters while still fighting and when Race slams the door, they read the small letters, the words in a different language they’d never seen before other than some inscription at the bottom, telling them that they’d know what it was like to walk in each other’s shoes and only selfless love could change them back.
They think nothing of it as Jack and Race try to pull themselves together. But soon after reading these letters, there’s an earthquake and Race immediately runs to Jack who cries for him to make sure he’s okay. When they get back to the table, they find that this drastic earthquake they felt did not affect the rest of the restaurant.
The rest of the night continues on like normal, ending with Jack tucking his kids into bed and going to sleep only to wake up the next morning in his son’s bedroom.
Having no idea why he was in there, thinking maybe he fell asleep in there, he stands up only to find that everything feels different. Soon enough he realizes that it’s because he’s woken up in his son’s body, is horrified to find the boy has tattoos and piercings he never knew about and thinks that maybe he must be dead.
His daughter rushed in, crying and screaming that dad’s dead and Jack rushed to his own body which he realizes is breathing and sends Smalls to go eat some breakfast. He wakes up himself and realizes that Race has woken up in his body and they’d somehow switched. Race is horrified by this and insists that they tell someone but Jack convinces him that everyone will think they’re just crazy.
They try to hurt themselves into switching back and are unsuccessful, forcing them to switch lives for the day. Jack goes to school for Race and Race goes to work for Jack. Race is forced to dodge Katherine’s advances on him while he’s in Jack’s body as Katherine drives them to school and work. Once they get to Race’s school, Jack in Race’s body is confronted by Spot Conlon, Race’s crush since middle school and sends him away even though Spot brought Race a t-shirt of his favorite bands new album. Spot is confused but leaves him alone.
Meanwhile Katherine drops Race off at Jack’s job and Race takes Jack’s credit cards and goes to town, getting Jack a nice haircut, ear piercings, an entirely new outfit and even getting his nails done. He then goes to Jack’s job as a receptionist for a psychologist’s office. He ignores most of the phone calls and doodles in Jack’s sketchbook, finding several sketches of himself, Smalls, Katherine and Smalls’ mother and especially of David. He spends most of his shift going through Jack’s books before getting reprimanded by his boss right before he leaves work.
Jack is having an awful day at Race’s school. He’s forced to take exams that he has no idea how to pass and Oscar sets Jack up to make it look like he’s cheating and Jack gets detention where he meets Spot who offers to help him finish his test. Jack accepts and finishes the tests while Spot helps him with the answers but as Jack’s putting the test back, he sees Oscar’s test and wanting to get back at the boy for his son’s sake, he erases all of Oscar’s answers and writes “I’m stupid” over the test instead.
Spot confronts him about this and Jack tries to explain, knowing it looked bad, but Spot just tells him to forget it and leaves him there even after Jack asks him for a ride.
So Jack goes back to class, finding that Mr. Snyder was an old classmate of his, one that Jack had never really liked and he remembers that Snyder had asked him out on a date more than once. Then, Jack realizes that Snyder was tormenting Race because of how jealous he was that Jack never gave him a second glance.
Jack never realized how hard Race had it until that day but still, when Race comes to pick him up in Jack’s car, Jack is furious, telling Race that he made him look like some kind of male prostitute while Race argues that Jack has never looked better. Jack insists he drive, but in Race’s body he isn’t able to without a permit and Race rubs this in his face. It’s a dangerous drive home, to say the least.
The second they get home, Katherine is shooing Race in Jack’s body out the door and Jack goes to find the letters they’d been given the night before. Katherine takes Race to an art show where she entered Jack’s art into the show. It’s all set up and Jack is supposed to speak about his paintings in front of the crowd. It doesn’t exactly go as planned. Race has no idea what Jack’s paintings are about so he starts making things up and riling up the crowd before slipping out and going to the nearest coffee shop where he runs into Spot, the barista.
Spot says he saw him on TV and buys him a coffee, spending his lunch with him. Race just forgets about everything and just spends the afternoon with Spot, even letting Spot give him a ride home on his motorcycle.
He doesn’t expect Katherine to see them on her way home.
When he gets home, Race goes to find Jack and Katherine confronts what she thinks is Jack about riding a motorcycle with some random guy. She asks him if he’s getting cold feet and Jack in Race’s body jumps in and tells her that Spot is a friend of Race’s and that it was all just a test to see if Spot was good enough for Race. Jack states that he believes Spot was. This makes Race happy.
On the way to the rehearsal dinner with the letters, Spot tried to stop Jack from getting married because he believes he’s in love with him, so Jack in Race’s body stops him and asks Spot to give him another chance and go after someone his own age.
Later, at the rehearsal dinner, Jack and Race try to switch back by being selfless but nothing happens so they get irritated and separate for a while when Spot tries to talk to Race in Jack’s body again, and Race’s friends kidnap Jack in Race’s body, tying him up with duct tape to get him to the audition that Jack had told them earlier he wasn’t going to. Katherine catches them and tells who he thinks is Race to go and Race in Jack’s body is shocked by this.
Jack, who has never played guitar in his life, is obviously trying to find a way out of this, but can’t and Katherine tells who she thinks is Jack to go after him, telling him that it hurt her that he thought she wouldn’t be supportive of Race’s music so Race rushes after them and watches Jack completely freeze on stage. Performing was never something Jack was too keen on. So Race rushes backstage and unplugs Jack’s guitar, playing for him instead while Jack mimes it onstage after nearly having a full on panic attack backstage with Race.
When they get back to the dinner, Jack tells Race to break it off with Katherine, knowing that it was hurting Race and Smalls who miss David, their abba, and he feels he should be putting them first.
So Race makes a toast in Jack’s body and instead of breaking off the wedding, he welcomes it, breaking into tears and telling Katherine he couldn’t wait to be apart of a new family where she was involved.
Then an earthquake hits.
And suddenly, Race is in his own body and Jack’s back in his.
And everyone is confused at what just happens, but Jack only wants to hug his son.
Everything slowly goes back to normal and Jack invites Spot to the wedding where Spot and Race kiss for the first time.

Author's Note: Hi that isn't my GIF. But this is my fic and I would really appreciate it if you told me how you thought it was, and if you especially like it, my requests are open friends. :3 I have the spicy sad right now, and needed a little angst with a happy ending. Ok, be fed I guess.
This has 3,000+ words, are you proud of me or what!?
From the prompt: As teenagers, a boy and a girl agree to marry if neither have by their 35th birthday. Follow the boy as he attempts to sabotage every relationship the girl has until then.
"Hey Tommy? I was thinking."
"That's a shit idea, you should stop doing that"
You swiped at the back of his head.
"Shut up you ass, I'm serious."
"Hi serious I'm- OW fucking hurt is what I am it's a joke, learn to take a-AH." You hurdled a handful of playground pebbles at the 17 year old.
"Alright, alright gorgeous, hit me- No! I meant hit me with the question you little shit." It was getting hard to breathe when he got you to giggle so hard.
You're laughter died down. You looked down, unsure if you could look at his face when you said this.
"I don't have a boyfriend." He abruptly stopped laughing, hiding the obvious fact that he almost choked on his own spit. You breathed a laugh again.
"I don't have a boyfriend. And you don't have a girlfriend." Your smile slipped off.
Tell him. Tell him, you're almost there. I don't have anyone, and you don't either except we do we have each we have each other we have-
You looked to Tommy, his boyish presence fitting on the swing set made for much younger kids. You were much younger kids when you met for the first time, on this very swing set. You think about telling him you fell in love with him when he pushed Jackson Paloski down on the asphalt because Jackson said trailer-trash can't play on the nice swing set. You didn't know it was love though, you were in the fourth grade but your heart still beat a little faster and when you asked him if you could sit beside him during lunch he huffed and complained, showing off he was moody and tough and haughty, but he very obviously made Michael Welsh move from his spot beside Tommy so that the pretty new girl could take her place beside him. And you stayed there. For years. Right beside him.
You felt the breath leave your lungs as you thought about telling him you can't stop thinking about him lately.
Can't stop hoping your skin will touch when he asks you to pass him something.
Can't help feeling like punching every girl that makes a scene trying to gain his attention. You're usually so focused on glaring at the girl that you miss the way he shrinks in on himself, the way he actively turns his body to you.
You think about telling him. And how telling him could mean you could do more, be more.
You think about telling him. And you think about him pulling away from you, gently gathering his things as he stumbles over how to let you down easily, unaware that that's not an option any more. Tommy letting you down would mean shattering.
You clench your jaw. His eyes try to tell you something.
"So. So since. We don't have someone." You look toward the Shell gas station across the street. Tommy wets his lips with a quick swipe of his tongue.
Your throat twinges, the twinge you get when you're trying to hold back tears. You shrug to yourself and let out a breathy laugh.
Coward.
"So since we don't have hot dates, we should make a deal." You make your voice upbeat. You know Tommy can call your bullshit but he doesn't, sit's quietly.
"If by the time we're 35, and we don't have a, someone, to, ya' know. We should get married." Your heart clenches. "If we don't have. Like if I don't have a husband, and you don't. Have a girl, or-" Tommy is quiet. White hot panic races up your spine. You look over at him.
Tommy looks-
He looks like he's frozen, like he's still a few sentences behind, and you're about to throw in the towel and swallow a few of these pebbles so you'll choke and die and won't have to hear his laughter tear apart your heart.
Then Tommy blinks and kind of hunkers in on himself, looks anywhere but you, eyes shifting and darting. His smile isn't his when he manages it.
"Oh, you're so on, sweetheart."
It's not quite right. The atmosphere is still tense and you feel like there's a conversation you're meant to be having, like there were supposed to be different words spoken and heard during that time.
But having Tommy, even if it's like this, even if he doesn't want you like you ache for him, is better than not having him at all.
Beside you, while you hurt quietly beside him, watching the sun set, rocking back and forth on the too low swing, Tommy swallows down self-hatred and overwhelming feelings. Instead, he schemes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been five years since you've made your little deal with Tommy. Five years, and every single time you've tried to move on from the man, it's ended in catastrophe.
The time you two had just graduated high school and drove to Tommy's house so his older brother could congratulate you two. Brendan had had a buddy over that night, not much older than you, and you would be lying if you said you didn't flush appreciatingly at his sly smile toward you and the way he actively tried to add you in on the conversation.
The night ended rather abruptly when Tommy had spilled hot tea all over the guys front. Tommy was always collected, and it was rare moment when he was clumsy. Never mind the fact that Tommy never drank tea, and actively made fun of you drinking the stuff.
Or the time you two reluctantly went to Brendan's wedding. You loved Tess, and thought they were a great couple, but stomaching an entire ceremony of the two being gross and affectionate, all while you and Tommy couldn't boo and throw miscellaneous items at them? The entire evening was spent with Tommy snuggly against your side snarking quietly in your ear, so close you could feel his warm breath on the entire side of your face.
Yes, your plan of moving on was going swimmingly.
Then Tommy went to the bathroom, and a handsome man smiled at you across the room. You tentatively smiled back, and he moved as if to cross the distance. Then immediately stopped, his face dropping and his eyes widening slightly as he spotted something a little over your shoulder. You saw him clear his throat and veer toward a large group laughing.
Your felt your face slightly warm and your heart drop a little, self consciously looking over your shoulder.
And let out a noise of surprise.
Tommy stood behind you, so close for a second you thought a very well dressed wall had somehow appeared while you weren't looking. You had just enough time to see 'The Expression'.
Tommy was an amazing fighter. And all throughout high school, he made sure while he minded his own, he could also hold his own, and everyone knew it. He had developed an expression, one that scared every single boy in this town shitless. It was a mix between unbridled rage and open invitation. The message was pretty clear and universal.
Come get some.
You usually laughed and teased him about it, because to you it just looked like he stubbed his toe and he was trying not to yell.
You weren't expecting to see it at his brother's wedding, and you certainly weren't laughing now.
In a blink it was gone from his face, and he turned to you with his beautiful sweet smile, the smile that showed just a little peak of his slightly messed up front teeth. He usually reserved that smile for you. You had never seen anyone else on the receiving end.
"Tommy, why were you just-"
"This blows, I just passed Tess and Brendan flirting. They're already married, why would they keep doing that." He rolled his eyes, moving to your side as his hand disappeared behind your back.
"Tommy did you just square up to the guy checking me ou-"
"Brendan's friend is here, the one who can can do a Kick Up."
You stared at each other for a long moment. You felt his hand barely ghosting over the small of your back. His eyes where sharp, a little desperate.
"Tommy."
"There's also a rumor he killed a guy with just a playing card."
You licked your lips. He raised his eyebrows, his lips getting distracting.
"Shit Conlon, why didn't you start with that, take me to him."
Or the time, more recently, when you went to a match to watch Tommy completely destroy his opponent. You loved going out to see him fight. Loved the adrenaline and the satisfaction when Tommy won, making him less timid, a little more rowdy and confident, a little more touchy and feely.
You've kind of given up on the whole moving on thing, even if it was driving you up a wall.
Tommy had just won, and you were eagerly waiting to congratulate him, excited to hug him freely, without him wondering why you were hugging him to begin with. And maybe to hold on a little tighter. Maybe to allow your hands to rove a little more freely.
Hey, was it not a night for celebration?
A man started to chat you up. You smiled patiently and gave some noncommittal grunts and affirmations as you continued to scan the crowd, looking for the familiar mass of Tommy, all hard edges and bulk. You were bouncing on the balls of your feet.
The guy moved closer, making a joke you didn't really hear. You laughed, your eyes darting and searching.
"You look beautiful by the way. I saw you watching the fight, crazy that you're into this stuff. Not a lot of women I know cheer like that."
You finally glance over to the man, but quickly get back to standing on your tip toes, looking above heads.
He doesn't even look that bad, and it's obvious he wants to get your number. He's just not the man you want chat with, and definitely not tonight. Not on a night that Tommy just won, and a night he'll want to come over to yours, joking and teasing, touching you much more confidently than he normally would. Falling asleep much more easier with his head on your lap.
You tamp down a smile. You wouldn't want this guy to get the wrong idea.
"You know, there's a really good Thai place down the road- Ah, fuck, watch it buddy. Can you not look where you're go-" You hear the man choke off the sentence, trying not to smile as you imagine the other guy. probably a lot bigger than he is. Wouldn't want to completely ruin his night by laughing at the guy.
"Fuuck me, buddy, sorry. I did not know who I was talking to." You could hear the man swallow. "Hey, I think you did great in the ring tonight, real good job of... Knocking that guy out. With one punch."
You whirled around, smiling so wide you felt the strain on your cheeks. There was only one guy who did that tonight.
Sure enough, Tommy was standing there. He had put on a shirt and took his gloves off, but he was still sweaty and breathing hard. He completely stanced up, like he is in the ring, and his expression was-
Well, you chalked it up to the testosterone flowing freely through the place. Probably just mad that he ran into another dude.
It still didn't stop you from running and jumping directly on him, arms coming up to wrap around his neck, legs completely circling his torso. You giggled into his neck, exclaiming how proud you were of him, how good he looked out there, completely stroking his ego, but not caring at the moment.
You felt his arms immediately span your back, feeling like his hands where trying to be everywhere at once. That was new. That was new and you couldn't say you hated it.
What you didn't see was the look on Tommy's face. The cold calm of someone who just threw a punch so hard at a man who was bigger and faster than him and shut his shit down. Directed at another man, much slower and smaller in comparison.
You didn't see the stranger's face pale, but you distantly heard the sound of chairs clatter to the ground as he turned tail.
Five years of pining (not so) quietly for Tommy, the man you had fallen in love with, but without a doubt did not love you back.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy knew without a doubt that he loved you.
All those years back in fourth grade, when he let it slip that his favorite snack was those crackers with the cheese filling, and you showed up with a whole pack of them to share, smiling this big goofy grin with your beautiful eyes and warm presence.
God how could he not.
The problem was how he was supposed to convince you to like him back. Him, Tommy, who fought most of his way through high school, who didn't like to get too close to people, who didn't like eye contact or conversation that ran too long or too forced. Who loved you though.
And who was very annoyed at the boy flirting with his girl.
It never failed to make Tommy's blood boil. He knew he had no right, because for one, he spent five years doing his damned best to break up every chance at you leaving him.
Just until you guys turn 35, right Tommy boy? You can probably keep that up.
Tommy breathed in a shuttering breath.
He just wanted to buy you your favorite drink at your favorite café. That's all he wanted to do. And maybe find and excuse to hold your hand without burning up from the embarrassment of actually having feelings (can you imagine?).
But of course, some dick-head always noticed how beautiful or kind or warm you were, and had to take their shot.
Well, Tommy was fucking sick of it.
Tommy thought of all the times, and there were a lot of times, when he had to step in and derail the situation. He knew this would be the last time. He had to do this, get rid of the unrelenting ache he felt while going to sleep, looking at you, thinking about you.
Tommy moved toward the you and the man you were talking to like he was entering the ring. With the mindset that he could get totally and irreversibly hurt, but he was gonna fight to the bloody end beforehand.
"Do you need directions?" Tommy asked as he slid up behind you, closer than he would have ever before. He felt your confusion even if he couldn't see your face.
"What?" The man was just as quizzical.
"Oh, I was just asking if you needed directions or if you could get lost on your own." Tommy raised his eyebrows, setting his hand on your hip, trying not to think about the many, many questions you'd have about that.
The man thought about arguing, but then he really looked at Tommy. Looked at you, then back to Tommy. Decided he didn't want to bleed tonight, and huffed out an angry sound.
You at least waited until he was out of ear shot before whirling on him.
"What. What was that?"
"Ok, I know what your probably thinking-"
"That you're out of your mind Tommy?! Are you kidding me right now? 'Get lost?' Get outta here with that shit, what was that?"
The two of you were pretty far back in the shop, but he still lowered his voice to make sure no one was bothered.
"Ok, yes, you're mad, I can see that-"
"Oooooh well I'm glad you can see that Tommy." You felt your face start to turn red, feeling exhausted and confused. "Explain. Explain to me Tommy, that every time a guy wants to have a nice, civil, God forbid, flirtatious conversation with me, he high tails it out of there just as fast, Tommy, explain."
Tommy felt an expanding ache somewhere behind his left eye.
"Ok. Ok I'm gonna say something stupid-"
"You always say something stupid, stupid-"
"Can you just. Can you let me finish." Tommy felt exasperated and a little insane. He was about to confess in a coffee shop to the girl he loved and things would never be the same again because she was about to leave, but fuck it if he wasn't at a boiling point.
"Ok. You know how we made a deal?" You looked at him, raising your eyebrows.
"About who could spray the most whipped cream in their mouth? Yeah it's me, it'll always be me. So you got so mad you're trying to, what, make sure I die alone, I don't..."
"What? No can you not, can you focus right now?" Tommy's palms were starting to sweat and he clenched his eyes shut tight. He breathed in and let it back out in one harsh huff. "When we were seventeen-"
"Seventeen?"
"When we were seventeen you said that if we weren't married by the time we were 35, that we should marry each other." He watched as your eyes widened and your face warmed a little. "Well, the deals off. I'm not doing it any more."
Tommy wasn't sure what to expect, but the flash of utter pain that tore across your face was not it. You stepped back, looked like you were about to bolt, your eyes wild. You tried to pull yourself together but it was really hard to breathe. No matter how many times you tried to prepare yourself for this day, you could have never imagined how it actually almost brought you know to your knees.
"So. Here's the new deal. If in like, five minutes, you're still single, and I'm still single..." Tommy swallowed hard, licking his lips. "We should just." His eyes darted to your lips.
You froze. Tommy caught his lush lower lip in between his teeth. He'd never been more nervous his entire life. So nervous for the inevitable laugh, the pity laced rejection, because really, it was one thing to be friends with a shy awkward boxer, but another to look at him and think, 'yeah, that'll do.'
Tommy had approximately five seconds to wallow in self deprecation and pure terror before he had a handful of you, and something that suspiciously felt like lips on his lips. But that's funny, because he's almost positive that that's not the case.
Then he felt your tongue swipe his lip and decided he cared fuck all and proceeded to get lost in you, your breaths, God he could feel, taste, your breath as you both got consumed by each other.
Someone coughed disapprovingly your way. The two of you broke apart, panting slightly.
"Ok, ok please don't. I really don't want you to hit me but I'm really fucking dense, right, and I just have to ask, you did that because you. You like like me- OW I said I didn't want you to hit me!"
You felt yourself laughing, felt your never ending ache subside and your love sky rocket.
"Oh, you're an idiot," You pecked his lips, he tried to catch your mouth fully but failed. "You are such and idiot- Oh my God we're both idiots holy- Hey. Hey, you, you've been. Have you been sabotaging-"
"Did you hear that?" Tommy tilted his head and looked toward the ceiling. "Ope- oh yeah. No. yeah, that's for sure the sound of-" He cut off, dropping his serious expression, grinning as he leaned down and kissed your mouth again, this time taking your words and any objections, affectively cutting off any questions that would leave him looking stupid.
You two would need to sit down, to talk about how you've felt all these years, how you were both so stupid that you both refused to confess to each other.
But for now, you lost yourself in the taste of Tommy, and the heady feeling of someone you've loved for seemingly forever, loving you back.
Real Quick: Would you be mad if in the next fics I write I called this man Tomithy? Asking for a friend.

Home - Tommy Riordan
I know you have lots of requests and it may be confusing so, no problem 😀 Y/N loves Tommy and when he comes back to town she tries to help him but he’s built up walls and doesn’t let anyone in. He’s aggressive towards her, he thinks she wants him to be softer just to help Brendan win the fight (she’s friends with him but it's not the case). Soon after his brother win the fight, Tommy goes see her and cries his heart out, apologizes and even gives her hope for a romantic relationship
Home - Tommy Riordan | Warrior (2011) |
You hunched your shoulders in an attempt to warm yourself as you stood on the front stoop of the Conlon house. You hadn't been here since you were a kid but Tess had told you that Tommy was back in town and you had to see for yourself. When you and Tommy were younger you had been inseparably close friends, spending days at a time together at your house. That only lasted so long, Tommy and his mother left the Conlon household and you lost your friend. You kept yourself close to Brendan and Tess just so you could keep tabs on Tommy.
The door opened, Paddy Conlon standing in the doorway looking older and less frightening than he used to when you were younger. You took a breath, burying your hands further into the pockets of your coat. "Mr. Conlon, is Tommy in? Brendan said he's here."
"He is." Paddy nodded. Whether he remembered you or not Paddy didn't say, he only held the door open for you to step further into the house. The living room was startlingly warmer than the outside and you had the sudden urge to pull your jacket off.
"Um-" you looked back at Paddy, waiting for some sort of cue. Was he going to call Tommy or were you meant to traverse through the house looking for him.
"He's in the kitchen."
"Right, thank you." You offered an awkward smile then excused yourself to go into the kitchen.
If you were expecting the same childhood friend from years prior it was certainly not who you were met with. You knew that Tommy had been a marine, Brendan had told you once, but you somehow hadn't imagined him being so built. His back was to you and you realized he was doing the dishes. When you were younger sometimes you and Tommy would stand in your kitchen doing dishes together after dinner.
"Need a hand?" You asked, shedding your jacket and heading further into the kitchen.
Tommy looked sideways, pausing in scrubbing a plate to look at you. The part of you that still kept all those memories of you and Tommy as children ached when he just stared at you curiously, as if he couldn't figure out why you were in his kitchen.
"What are you doing here?" He asked. He had seen you already, he was leaving the gym nearly a week before and saw you at your car, talking to Tess.
"I heard you were in town. Brendan said you're fighting in the MMA tournament." You replied. You wanted to say too that you had seen the video of him fighting. You had watched it a dozen times at least. And you'd heard about his time in the Marines, the good parts they were talking about and the dissertation charge the army was trying to stick to him.
"Yeah." He nodded his head and turned back to finish washing dishes.
You moved to stand beside him at the counter, taking a dishtowel and holding a hand out for the plate he had. "Who's training you?"
"Paddy." He replied.
"You know Brendan is entering too? Him and Tess aren't doing well financially." You said. It was something Tess had confided in you and something you thought Tommy probably wouldn't know about. "He really needs that money."
"Is that what this is?" He asked, flicking off the faucet and turning toward you.
"What?"
"You come around after years of absence so you can sell me some sob story about Brendan and fucking Tess? I entered this tournament same as he did and if it comes down to it I'll fight him same as anyone else." Tommy said.
"I didn't mean it like that Tommy, I was just saying-"
"You were just saying that I should roll over and be done with it cause my brother needs the money. Cause he's always done the right thing for me yeah?"
"I'm not defending Brendan or asking you to sit this out." You laid a hand on his arm and he pulled away. "I was just telling you what I'd heard."
"I don't need you to tell me." Tommy replied. Time had not been kind to your best friend and that showed now, in the way he snapped to the defensive immediately. "Why'd you come here?"
"Because I missed you and you're my friend."
"Is that right? Are we friends? You know how long it's been since we stood in this kitchen together? The last time I saw you I was walking out the door with my mom and you wouldn't even look at me when I waved to you." He said.
You had ridden passed on your bike that afternoon, not believing Tommy from the day before when you stood in the kitchen with him and he told you he was leaving. When you saw the car packed and his mom in the driver's seat you'd sped past, tears in your eyes and unable to say goodbye.
"I was a kid Tommy, I was mad at you!" You replied.
"When'd you stop being mad? Just before you walked in this door? You never once tried to contact me after I left. You just buddied up with Brendan and Tess. I shoulda known you would!"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You fucking worshipped the ground he walked on. The minute I was gone you forgot about me and moved on to him." He replied.
"That time away cracked your head Tommy." You tossed the dishtowel onto the counter and hurried out of the kitchen, tears threatening to spill again.
You didn't dare go back to the Conlon house after the argument. Just like when you were a kid you kept your distance from Tommy, knowing that whatever anger he had towards you was still there, pent up and waiting to be released. He wouldn't listen to you try to reason with him without jumping to conclusions about you wanting him to forfeit. Even though you stayed away from him you still kept up with the tournament, watching every match that Tommy fought.
On the night of the final match you went. You found Paddy out back smoking and asked if you could see Tommy before the fight. He led you back to the warm up room Tommy was waiting in though Tommy refused to speak to you. You told him you'd be in his corner and left it at that, heading out to find your seat. You sat exactly where you said you would, directly behind Tommy's corner of the ring. Tess stood on the other side with Brendan's trainer, cheering her husband on.
When you had told her about the fight you had with Tommy she had told you that you shouldn't have expected more out of him. Of course he was judgmental and angry, that was how Tommy had always been and you needed to steer clear of him.
"If I have to choose between my friendship with you and Brendan and Tommy...I'll choose Tommy every time. I should have in the beginning and that's my fault. I won't make the same mistake twice."
It was last you'd spoken to Tess.
You watched the match from start to finish, anxiety wracking your body with every punch that Brendan was able to land. When Tommy's shoulder dislocated you fought back tears and pushed yourself to keep watching as he fought with just one arm. It was over than and everyone could feel it, waiting with baited breath as Tommy pushed the fight as long as he could. Brendan gained the upper hand and you sat in relief as Tommy surrendered the fight to his older brother. Watching him in pain was too much for you and you were glad for the fight to be over even though you couldn't stop the ache in your chest at the thought that Tommy had lost.
After the fight you went home. You didn't stay, knowing that trying to talk to him again would be futile. He had made it clear the first time that he wanted nothing to do with you and your persistence was only pushing him further away. It was nearing one in the morning when there was a knock on your front door. You hadn't been able to sleep and so instead were sitting on the couch watching infomercials. You got up, looking out the peep hole to see Tommy standing there, beanie in his hand, as he waited for you to open the door.
He didn't wait long.
"Tommy, what're you doing here?"
He went to answer and then stopped himself, shaking his head. You pulled him inside, careful of his shoulder and shut the door behind him. Both of you sat on your couch as you waited for him to speak. You thought of offering a pot of coffee, if just to give yourself something to do, when Tommy wiped at his eyes and you realized he'd started to cry.
"Tom," you pulled him into a hug, his head on your shoulder as he continued crying. You ran your hand up and down his back, hushing him. You could feel your skin growing wet with tears, running down your collar to the top of your camisole.
"I thought this would fix things." He said, "I thought if I could win, if I could beat Brendan. Paddy was...he was so awful to mom and when we left I didn't want to be in that house with him anymore but I didn't want to be there either. What kind of son doesn't want to be with their mom?"
"You were just a kid Tommy," you consoled, "you're allowed to be angry about it."
"Brendan didn't have to do any of that, he got to stay here with Tess and everything worked out for him. I tried to get away from it, joining the marines. I thought I could get away from here and from mom and start over but...I just wanted one good thing."
You nodded in understanding and placed a kiss on his head.
"If I had stayed...if I hadn't left that could've been us, getting married and having kids."
"But your mom needed you Tommy. You're not a selfish person, you would never leave anyone like that." You replied. "You're too good a person."
"Look where that's gotten me."
"Hey," you nudged him up so you could look at him, face red and eyes still watery. "I should've stuck by you, I was being a stupid kid but I'd never leave you like that again. You don't have to face all this on your own."
"I told Paddy I'm gonna stick around." Tommy said, "if it's alright with you, I'd like a second chance."
"I should be the one asking you for a second chance."
He leaned forward, kissing your forehead and you felt the same butterflies in your stomach that used to erupt when you were kids. The mere thought of him used to have you fluttering in the best way. You knew he was right, if he had stayed like Brendan had you and him would be married right now, maybe with kids of your own, and you couldn't deny that you'd thought of that more than once before. But he was too good to ever turn his back on someone and maybe, you reasoned, things were supposed to happen this way.
"Will you stay tonight?" You asked, holding his hand in yours, fingers interlaced.
"You sure?"
"Positive."
I rewrote this five times. Also I’m disregarding that he’s meant to be arrested at the end of the film. This is based on the 2011 movie Warrior starring Tom Hardy as MMA fighter Tommy Riordan.

Over the years there have been numerous films that include the sport of boxing as a backdrop and even a few that include wrestling but until 2011's Warrior there has never been a movie that showcases the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting. Just like Rocky or Million Dollar Baby, the action itself isn't the focal point of the film but serves as a useful tool to create tension for the drama surrounding it. The plot has a basic premise that could include almost any sport or even none at all, but the violence that is encompassed in MMA fighting helps shape and mold the characters and the audience perception of them.
Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy; Mad Max: Fury Road) is a military soldier and the younger of two sons of a former boxer/ alcoholic/ abusive parent, Paddy (Nick Nolte; Cape Fear). He is angry at the world and ready to fight anyone who looks at him the wrong way. He is also a hurt little boy on the inside and emotionally closed off. He becomes an internet sensation when a viral video shows him taking down Mad Dog (Erik Apple), one of the top MMA fighters in the Country, which inspires him to ask Paddy to help him to train for the Sparta Contest, a "winner takes all" MMA competition.
Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton; The Gift) is Tommy's older brother who is a high school Physics teacher and former MMA fighter. In an effort to keep from losing his house, he starts fighting again and when his trainer's best guy gets injured, Brendan begs to be sent to the Sparta competition in his place. The obvious underdog, Brendan must use his intellect to outsmart his competition and win the $5 million prize money. Ultimately, Brendan surprises everyone and makes it to the finals only to be face to face with his estranged brother, Tommy.
Director Gavin O'Connor (Miracle) really knows how to cast his films in order to get maximum use out of his performers. All three leading men were perfect for their roles and Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time) as Brendan's Wife, Tess, is well cast too. Nolte plays Paddy as a fractured man trying to make amends but who also understands he doesn't deserve the forgiveness he seeks. His obvious hurt though is no less compelling. Edgerton is the perfect combination of softness and hard as nails drive and determination and Hardy simply does what Hardy does best – the brooding, angry, Neanderthal-like male who doesn't need anything nor anyone.
The 4K UHD Blu-ray disc is beautifully presented in 2160p high definition video quality and accentuates the sharp differences between Tommy's and Brendan's worlds. It is evident even in their training facilities, where Tommy's is dirty and gritty and he is surrounded by tough, mean, guys who always eye him suspiciously and Brendan's is clean and tidy and where everyone is encouraging and pushes each other to be their very best. The Dolby Atmos audio is clear and crisp with the dialogue sitting nicely in the center channel and background noises (like the crowd cheering) filling the surrounding speakers.
The Warrior combo pack has a number of extras including: Digital Download, Audio commentary with Gavin O'Connor, Anthony Tambakis, John Gilroy and Joel Edgerton, Redemption: Bringing Warrior to Life, Philosophy in Combat: Mixed Martial Arts Strategy; Simply Believe: A Tribute to Charles "Mask" Lewis, Jr., "Cheap Shots" Gag Reel, Brother vs. Brother: Anatomy of the Fight, and The Diner Deleted Scene. While many of these extras offer terrific insight into the world of MMA fighting and give the viewer a sense of the friendship that developed between the cast and crew, others, like the Anatomy of the Fight were not as interesting or informative.
I started out hating this film finding the pacing slow and the characters somewhat uninteresting. However, partway through the film when they end up at the Sparta Competition in Atlantic City, I became more invested in these men, their relationship with each other and their father and their need to thrive in this arena. So if you can sit through the first half of the film and stomach the fight scenes at the end (which I had a hard time doing) the payoff is watching a beautifully acted, well put together film with heart and soul.

Jenna Kalista releases new single “Phoenix”!
Vocal/Pop artist Jenna Kalista has released her first single Phoenix! Teaming up with producer/engineer Allerdyce (aka Andi Inadomi), Kalista’s new single is a passionate anthem about finding the resilience to rise up again after being knocked down. Its powerful narrative is a fearless, yet earnest story that is both inspiring and reflective, set against a catchy dance beat. The song relates that as messy and challenging as life can be, there is beauty in the chaos and in the toughest circumstances. With a chorus of “You can throw your stones/Go on, give me your worst blow/I’m not gonna crumble”, her raw vocal strength is on full display, culminating in a simple yet triumphant bridge declaring; “I’m Alive”.
Based in Los Angeles, Kalista is a trained concert singer whose electrifying vocal performances have breathed life into the works of the great masters of classical music and opera. A graduate of the USC Thornton School of Music, she has been a prominent feature of the USC Chamber Opera and numerous USC Opera productions, singing under the instruction of Maestros James Conlon and Brent McMunn. She has won awards at multiple vocal competitions, including the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, leading to performances at storied venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and onto several European tours. Although a relative newcomer to the pop scene, Kalista’s versatility and classical training have made her an in-demand background vocalist for artists like Philly K., Vanessa Bejine, and One Hundred Paces. Her sound has transcended classical and operatic contexts, crossing over into folk, indie, jazz, and musical theatre. Having already shared the stage with the likes of Idina Menzel, Jason Robert Brown, Neil Berg, Anna Schulze, and Bitter Blue, you can also hear her on the recent EP release After the Flood by Noam Katz and the upcoming release We Will Overcome by Charlie Kramer.

Headcanon: No attraction at the beginning

Requested by @maebelle14 : Can you do a Tommy and the reader, and a character like Tess, you know kids, working Mom, maybe at first they hate each other, but Tommy kind of likes when she’s a bitch... idk
Pairing: Plus sized reader x Tommy Conlon
Warning(s): mention of drugs
Word count: 783
~~~
-You met Tommy through Tess. You were a single hard working mother and your children played with Tess's because you were best friends. You were surprised that her husband had a brother because you had never heard him speak about Tommy. So you were shocked to meet him at a little get together at Tess’s house
-Tommy was in awe of your beauty, he couldn't keep his eyes off you and was a stuttering mess while trying to introduce himself to you. You didn't feel any attraction towards him because you instantly noticed that he was on something by the way he was walking and talking. You had left your ex husband because of the drugs, so it was rather easy for you to detect someone who was under the influence of it by just a quick glance
-Tommy was very shocked by your cold demeanor and asked himself if you had heard some story about him. "No" you answered him, "I just know that you're not completely in the real world. And I heard your pills jiggle in your pocket. I don't want anything to do with that or anyone who uses them" you snapped and walked away. You didn't even give him a chance to speak or defend himself, Tommy was shocked but couldn't help but admire your luscious curves as they jiggled while you walked away
-"Feisty, I like it" Tommy said with a smirk. After that, he tried his best to convince you that he wasn't an addict and that he genuinely was a good guy. You had major trust issues so you always brushed his date proposals off or declined them feeling somehow not ready to date again. Tommy was falling for you and hurt whenever you acted cold and distant towards him but it made him try harder to ask you and get to know you
-Tommy turned to his brother for advice on how get your to at least go on one date with him. “Be patient with her” was all his brother said. Tommy did as he was told and started to observe and study you from a distant. First, he thought that you were playing hard to get but quickly found out that your ex husband was a real addict who chose his addiction over his family. He loved seeing you play with your children, showing him that you were a very good mother and independent from anyone. Those facts about you made him fall harder for you
-You on the other hand, noticed that Tommy was constantly looking at you and surprisingly, it didn’t bother you. The way he was staring at you made you feel flattered. It took Tommy a few weeks to gather all his courage and walk up to you at a little get together at Tess’s house. “Can I speak to you for a minute?” he softly asked and gave you a gorgeous smile when you nodded your head
He held the door for you open and lead you to the backyard, “I know that we didn’t start off on good terms”, he cleared his throat, “I just want to show you that I’m not an addict or your ex husband. I admit that I used to take pills but I stopped for you” his statement shocked you. “R-Really?” you asked while staring deeply into his eyes
-Tommy hummed and took a step closer to you, hold your hand in his. “Yes, the second I saw you, I feel drawn to you, I wanted to get to know you. When you showed no interest, my brother told me to be patient with you. So, I took my time to observe you and find out some things” his eyes flickered from your eyes to your lips
-“You’re a great mom, a beautiful and strong independent woman and I admire you for that [Y/N] but I can’t stay away from you any longer” he whispered the last part before his lips met yours in a passionate kiss. You closed your eyes and felt the pleasant sensation run through your body, the butterflies swirling in your stomach
-“Give me a chance” Tommy begged in between the kisses while he held your face in his hands. It was hard to focus on what he was saying, it’s like your mind went completely blank. You just hummed and pulled him closer to you, wanting to feel his plump lips for one more time against yours. “Okay” you whispered when pulling away from the passionate kiss, “I’m willing to give you a chance but please don’t make me regret this” you sighed. “Of course not” Tommy smiled and wrapped his arms around your thick waist
WAVE A man wakes from a coma speaking a fully formed but unrecognizable language baffling linguistic experts from around the globe. Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WaveShortFilm Folllow on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/waveshortfilm/ WAVE - TRAILER: https://vimeo.com/214217381 Director’s Bios Benjamin Cleary is an Irish filmmaker living between London and Dublin. In 2015 he wrote, directed and edited his first short film, Stutterer, which won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short at the 88th Academy Awards in February 2016. Stutterer has played at more than 80 festivals worldwide and has won over 20 awards including a Cannes Young Director Award, an Irish Film & Television Award (IFTA) and a London Critic’s Circle Award. In addition to this Benjamin was selected for the esteemed Les Nuit En Or scheme in France as one of 30 award-winning directors from around the world to tour Europe presenting their work. Benjamin is represented by Anonymous Content for film & TV in the US. In the UK he is repped by Ian Benson of The Agency, London. TJ O’Grady Peyton is an Irish director who graduated from the London Film School’s prestigious graduate program in 2010. Fresh into the professional ad space, he was shortlisted for the Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2013 and 2015, later earning a People’s Voice Award at The Webby Awards in 2016. He has created narrative-driven commercials for such top clients as BMW, Gatorade, Cadillac, Coke, Nespresso, and Conde Nast, among others. A cinephile from a young age, TJ infuses a cinematic edge and emotional through line in all of his work, no matter what length. TJ is represented by Decon in New York and he is currently studying screen acting in one of Ireland’s leading creative hubs, Bow Street. Later this year he will be acting alongside Ellen Page in zombie thriller “The Third Wave”. The Story of Wave July 2015. Ben had spent over a year making STUTTERER which had just started its festival run. After editing the film for ages and caught in the throws of festival submissions, he was in dire need of jumping into something non STUTTERER related. TJ had just returned from directing a commercial in Australia for Gatorade with NFL Quaterback Cam Newton and was very eager to direct a short while also sink his teeth into some more acting. Ben and TJ had been mates for years and have always wanted to collaborate. After chatting one night, TJ mentioned that he wanted to give acting a proper go. Ben had seen him in a small Irish indie feature a few years previously and was impressed. They decided that Ben would write something for TJ to act in and both would co direct. The rules were simple: zero budget, under five minutes, and something they can shoot on a weekend with a few mates… Cut to: nineteen months later. 14-ish shoot days. Over thirty crew members. Twelve actors. Twenty locations. Fourteen outfit changes. One made up language. One Phantom. One Alexa. One 5D. Dawn shoots. Night shoots. Storm shoots. Sleepless nights. Three post houses. 46 VFX shots. Entire vats of coffee. Sixty youtube videos from every continent. And a world premiere in Tribeca. That original plan to come up with something tiny and contained went out the window when Ben read an article about an Englishman who had suffered a severe stroke. When he recovered, the man was speaking fluent Welsh even though he hadn’t lived in Wales since he was a young boy. Ben became fascinated with the phenomenon and started to discover similar cases around the world. He wrote a script loosely based on these strange happenings – but the kicker being that the protagonist would be speaking an entirely new language. Over the course of an intense month of work, Ben and TJ started planning how they would bring WAVE from script to screen. Excitement started to build! Enter: producer extraordinaire, Rebecca Bourke. For the first week or two Ben and TJ started rounding up a few mates and loosely planning a shoot in Ben’s flat (while they worked out how to create a made up language that would sound believable). But things really got going when they managed to convince Rebecca to join the team. Rebecca is a talented producer who runs a production company called Assembly in Dublin. Suddenly the whole thing took on a more professional feel and started to gain momentum. Over the next nineteen months, the team found themselves pulled in all directions. Everyone was busy, many of us being taken away to work outside the country. WAVE became this process where like it’s protagonist – our production had to discover its own short hand to make this passion project come to life. We would get together every few months when everyone was in Dublin to shoot a bit here, and a little bit there. And slowly but surely everything began to fall into place. We had the excellent cinematographer Burschi Wojnar on board who has his own Alexa and was immensely generous with his time. As the lead actor, TJ was on his own in many of scenes so we were able to shoot whenever we wanted. And we had Rebecca on hand to organize a watertight shoot and call in the favours whenever needed. It was tough at times and frustrating and the project went through many ups and downs, but it was actually a great way to make a film and WAVE became a passion project that everyone loved being a part of. The genre police would probably call WAVE a dramedy, and there’s probably truth to that, but from deep pain, comes great comedy, and Ben + TJ do feel deeply connected to the films tragic current. Its those moments Ben + TJ find most fascinating to explore. Alienation. Isolation. Loneliness. Empathy. At it’s heart the directors hope WAVE is successful in exploring the human condition in an interesting way. In the end, the team have (finally) made a film that they’re all very proud of. If they had to do it all again starting tomorrow, would they be crazy enough to dive back into the deep end? The answer might just be yes.
