...Yes, I realize I'm late to ranting about this (I've been BUSY),
but fucking no.
youtube
Kinda funny that the crit for this is a lot similar to that of MG..."it could have been, but..."
They better not be touching my Misery, even if it's a "loose remake". The Weeknd already ruined his acting cred with the cringe-inducing The Idol. His ego is so...huge yet there's nothing but hot air there, and those stroking it (Trey Edward Shults) needs to take a second look at that crap show with his bad acting.
Misery's another pop culture thing that I've been devoted to for over 30 years. I have the book in several iterations (French 🇫🇷🥖🫠 is my favorite) and I keep finding Misery VHS tapes around the area where I live (it's just yet another weird phenomenon that I can't explain). I have three, floating somewhere around this garbage dump of an apartment, even though I don't even have a VCR.
My baby dog is named after a character in the newish, successful prequel to Misery, the second season of Castle Rock. The backstory on Annie was phenomenal, and Lizzy Caplan was robbed of all the awards for her portrayal of Annie. Fucking ROBBED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also, whoever made this decision here was a fucking genius...bringing to mind the final shot of the original Psycho movie was brilllllllliant.)
So Misery has a very close place in my heart (not to fucking mention that it came out around the time I had my own goddamn stalker...that is part of the attempted murder thing I've yet to post). It was the last movie my father took me too, as well (he's still alive...but like Cairo, I have very selfish parents).
Do I have faith that our girl Ortega can do it? Of fucking course I do. She plays Crazy pretty well. But it would be trusting the material to a child (ha ha) who, from the looks of past cringey work, is just driving another (mid) vehicle for Ortega to get hurt in the crash. Too many people LOVE Misery, and Annie Wilkes is beloved. She's a most iconic villainess, and just about anyone who plays her gets accolades (Laurie Metcalf in particular was fkn great in the stage play). I don't see Ortega dropping the ball on any iteration of Annie Wilkes, but I see people looking at the Weeknd after The Idol and laughing (as well they should).
Plus, there's this factor:
Tumblr media
Who is Ortega's agent? Isn't she getting fucking sick of re-doing everything from 30+ years ago? What's fucking next, a remake of Gremlins with her as Gizmo?
Tumblr media
...
...Actually, I'd pay to see that. I WOULD PAY.
Tumblr media
But seriously, she wanted to become a scream queen of sorts and now she's fucking stuck doing the same shit other people did before her, and within the memories of people who were alive when the originals came out. Maybe if 50 years had passed between everything, sure. Maybe she should try remaking more stuff from the 60s and 70s. But then again, this is happening with Burton (and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, which I still kinda feel is perfect for the barely 5' foot tall Ortega 🤣) and I still feel it's just doing the same thing over and over and over again when there are literally thousands of original scripts out there that aren't getting a second look. There's also thousands upon thousands of books that haven't been adapted.
Or, if she really wants to remake something so badly, something that would be completely controversial: Anne Desclos's The Story of O. A new take on it, one that will confuse the Purity Culturalists just as it pissed off feminists in the 1970s before Desclos, a woman, was revealed to have written it in the 90s. Much like it is today, people get pissed off when female characters are written by women as anything less than 'more' (perception-wise, ofc) than the men around them/young women can never be written as willingly submissive or horribly deranged. Can't write Cairo to be the crazy stalker Adrian Forrester was. Can't write anything where a woman willingly throws herself at/or is submissive to a man (because that never happens IRL, right 💀).
The problem is, people love Crazy/unhinged. We fucking love. It. WHEN IT IS DONE WELL. We need substance behind it, especially if it's a new take on a beloved, completely and utterly unhinged character like Annie Wilkes.

Jesus Christ, can't I just sleep for the next 20 years and skip all of this crap?

“So I take it you didn’t enjoy the movie?” you said as you and Tara walked out of class on Monday.
“God, no,” she replied, making a disgusted face. You laughed. “Why, couldn’t you tell?”
“I had a hunch when you only added to the discussion two minutes before class ended. And you just reiterated what I had just said.”
“Yeah, because that was the first time you didn’t talk for five minutes straight!” she exclaimed, nudging you. You grinned. “Seriously, you talked more than Professor Johnson did. And your eyes were sparkling the whole time like it was the most interesting topic in the world!”
“Sparkling, huh?” you smirked, raising an eyebrow at her. She just shoved you again.
“Yes! I don’t understand it! How can you get so much joy out of such a boring movie?”
You shrugged your shoulders dramatically. “Well…”
“No,” she commanded, pointing a scolding finger in your face. “I cannot stand hearing you talk about that movie anymore. Or any old movie for that matter. I forbid it.”
“Okay, fine, we’ll talk about something else,” you chuckled. “Why don’t you go on and on about something then?”
“Like what?”
“Those elevated horror movies you were texting me about all weekend,” you suggested. Tara’s eyes lit up.
“I wasn’t annoying you with all those texts, was I?”
“No, of course not.” You shook your head, trying to get rid of the blush you felt creeping up your neck as you thought of how you’d waited with bated breath for her next message. You’d nearly screamed with excitement when she’d sent I’m so proud of you! after you’d told her you’d seen all of Jordan Peele’s films. “I like hearing you talk about horror movies.”
Tara beamed, and you couldn’t help but smile at her. “Okay, which movie did you end up watching?”
“I watched two, actually. The Witch and Midsommar.”
“And what did you think?”
“They were great! Especially Midsommar. The cinematography and special effects really enhanced the growing sense of dread throughout the movie.”
“Oh my god, I know! Ari Aster is, like, one of my favorite directors ever, his work is so innovative” she babbled. “What about The Witch?”
“I loved how they used the Puritan setting to convey the theme, but if I’m honest, I thought it dragged a bit in the middle.”
Tara stared at you in disbelief. “Oh, I know you didn’t just call one of my favorite movies boring.”
“I didn’t say that!” you insisted, throwing up your hands in surrender. Then you grinned mischievously. “I just think it’s a little surprising you didn’t like Metropolis.”
She stopped walking and crossed her arms childishly. “I don’t even want to talk to you,” she scoffed, turning up her nose. “That’s the most insulting thing anyone’s ever said to me.”
“Oh, c’mon,” you said, rolling your eyes. “That can’t be true.”
Tara gasped.
“I’m kidding! I’m kidding,” you chuckled. She glared at you, and you smiled at her softly. “Tell me about The Witch.”
She pretended to be angry for another moment before dropping her arms back to her sides. “Fine,” she huffed, trying to hide her grin. “But you’re still an asshole.”
“It takes one to know one, Coffee Girl. Remember, you insulted one of my favorite movies first.”
Tara ignored you and launched into her spiel about why The Witch was so brilliant. She explained the origins of the folklore and the texts that Robert Eggers referenced when writing it, and she had a lot of thoughts about Thomasin’s strained relationships with her family members. You couldn’t imagine your eyes had ever sparkled half as much as hers did now. She made you want to watch the boring movie again if only to keep that beautiful smile on her face.
“If that’s what I sounded like in class, then I’m sorry,” you joked when you reached the crosswalk. She slapped your arm, her nose scrunching adorably as she snickered. “I wish I could hear more of your riveting analysis, but this looks like the end of the road.”
“Actually, I was going to go to the campus cafe and get some coffee,” she said, dipping her head and glancing up at you hopefully. Her cheeks flushed. “Do you want to come with me?”
“Yeah, that sounds great,” you grinned. “I’ve been looking for an excuse to get some caffeine in me.”
“Okay, let’s go.” She turned toward the cafe and you followed eagerly. “So as I was saying, I find Thomasin’s relationship with her mother to be the most compelling dynamic in the movie,” she continued without missing a beat. You just nodded.
You arrived at the cafe and ordered your drinks, smiling awkwardly at each other as you sat at a small table by the window. You took a sip and your eyes widened in surprise. “Damn, this is good!”
Tara giggled. “Have you not been here before?”
“No, I’ve been meaning to check it out, but I haven’t got around to it. So, thanks.”
“Anytime.”
“Now, I know why you love The Witch, but I don’t know much about you,” you said after a moment. “What are you into besides elevated horror? What’s something I need to know about Tara Carpenter?”
Something flashed in Tara’s eyes, but it disappeared before you could identify it. She shifted uncomfortably, gripping her coffee cup, and you noticed the scar on the back of her left hand. “Oh, I… I’ve been talking for a while. Why don’t you tell me something about you? Tell me about your tattoos!”
She gestured to your arms as she took a big gulp of her coffee, and you smiled sheepishly. “Well, this one is a reference to my favorite TV show,” you said, leaning forward and pointing to the design on your right bicep. Then you pointed to the tattoo opposite it on your left arm. “That one is a reference to my favorite band. And this one’s a reference to my favorite book.” You held out your right arm to show off the intricate design on your wrist. “They’re all things that mean a lot to me. In one way or another, they’ve kind of changed my life,” you explained. Tara smiled. Then you pointed to the bats on your left forearm. “And this one’s just because I think bats are really cool.”
Tara chuckled. “They’re really pretty.”
“Thanks.”
“How long have you had them?”
“Well, I got this one back home in Kansas on my eighteenth birthday,” you said, pointing to the one on your wrist. “And I got the other ones here over the summer.”
“I wonder if you bumped into my friend Chad, he got some here over the summer too,” she said. “I figured most other out-of-state students moved in at the start of the school year.”
“Yeah, well… I guess I just needed a change of scenery,” you replied, rubbing the back of your neck.
“I get that. It’s why we moved during the summer, too.”
“We?”
“My friends go to Blackmore too, so we moved at the same time. And my older sister kind of followed me here.”
“You must be close if you let her do that,” you commented.
Tara stared into her coffee with a small smile. “Yeah, I guess we are.”
“So, is there anything else you want to know about me?” you asked her. She thought for a moment.
“What kind of stuff do you write?”
“Oh, I hope you’re ready for me to ramble at you again,” you grinned. “I’ve written some sci-fi and fantasy stories and a couple of short films, but right now I’m working on a horror story.”
“Ooh, tell me about it!” Tara said, leaning forward excitedly. You did the same, and as you began to describe your passion project, her eyes sparkled almost as much as yours did.
You couldn’t help grinning all the way home. Tara had loved the idea of your horror story, and after making her beg you to let her read it, she had loved the first few scenes even more. Then when you had refused to tell her how it ended, she had thrown napkins at you until a server came over and told her to stop. Her brazen insistence that the server was in the wrong made you forget all about being embarrassed, and you talked for another hour after that. The conversation spanned a wide range of topics, and even though she hadn’t told you much about her past, you felt like you knew Tara pretty well now. Every moment you spent with her made you like her even more, which was why you decided to be bold the next time you saw her.
“Ugh, how many stupid silent films are we going to watch?!” Tara exclaimed as she slung her backpack over one arm, her eyes daring you to challenge her. You chuckled.
“For once, I agree with you. Even I think The Passion of Joan of Arc is boring,” you smiled.
“Finally! God, I was wondering when you would start making sense.”
“But Professor Johnson’s not wrong though. It has some great close-up shots and really interesting set designs,” you continued. Tara groaned.
“Why can’t you just hate the same things as me?”
“Because I have better taste than you,” you said, your smirk growing wider as she pouted back. “If you’re free this weekend, you should come over to my apartment and we can watch it together. It might make it a little more bearable.”
Her expression darkened, and she drifted to the edge of the sidewalk. Away from you. “Sorry, but I can’t- I’m busy this weekend. I can’t… go to your place.”
She avoided your eyes, and you felt a cold dread seep into your chest. Was that too forward? You thought you were friends by now. But of course, you had to go and ruin it. You stumbled over your words, rushing to apologize before she could tell you she never wanted to speak to you again.
“Oh, yeah, no, of course! It’s totally fine, I get it. I’m sorry, I- I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I just thought- never mind. I’m sorry.” Your entire face felt hot, and you could’ve sworn she could hear your heart pounding in your chest. She looked at you, her expression probing, and you felt small under her gaze. Then she smiled shyly.
“How about after class on Friday,” she suggested. “If you reserve one of the study rooms in the library, I’m there.”
“Sounds good,” you grinned, heaving a sigh of relief. “Yeah, you got it. I can’t wait.”
“Me neither,” she said. She nudged you playfully. “I never realized how awkward you are.”
“I’m just a treasure trove of new information, aren’t I?”
Tara giggled. “Yeah, and you’re going to use all that information to help me pass this class.”
“Ah, that’s the real reason you hang out with me. You’re using me for my intelligence.”
“Oh, for sure,” she grinned. “No other reason.”
“Understood,” you said, nodding as you approached the crosswalk. “It’s good to know where I stand.”
“Alright, I’ll see you in class, Y/N,” Tara smiled. “And I’m going to hold you to what you said about making Joan of Arc less boring.”
“I’ll do my best,” you promised. “See you later, Tara.”
You fiddled with the drawstring on your hoodie as you walked to the library on Friday. Tara followed as you led her to the study room you’d reserved, the large oak tree outside the window blocking the sunlight and making it feel like a little movie theater. You had spent an hour scouting all the rooms to make sure you got the best one. Not that you would ever tell her that.
“Have a seat,” you said, gesturing to the plush chairs spread out in crude rows across the room as you pulled down the projection screen. You’d also made sure you had the room with the best furniture. “I just need to connect my laptop, and then we can start the movie.”
“How long is it again?”
“About two hours.”
Tara threw her head back against the chair, her eyes screwed shut in a pained expression. “Your job today is to convince me not to drop this class.”
“What, is getting to hang out with me not enough for you?” you smirked. She rolled her eyes. “Aren’t you the one who chose to be a film major?”
“Yeah, but I want to learn how to make movies now, not watch films from a hundred years ago!”
It was your turn to roll your eyes. “Okay, I’ll do my best to convince you. Do you remember what we’re supposed to be paying attention to?”
“Yes,” Tara replied. “But I think you should say it anyway. So I’ll know if you remember or not.”
You smiled in spite of yourself. “The use of close-ups and the things that are off-kilter in the mise en scène.”
“Yeah, good job! You got it right,” she grinned.
“You’re a piece of work, you know that?” you said as you started the movie.
“Yeah, but you like me anyway.”
You didn’t respond as you settled into the chair next to her, feeling self-conscious under her mischievous gaze. “Watch the movie,” you said softly, and you heard her chuckle.
You did watch the movie, at least for a while. Then, as you neared the forty-five-minute mark, Tara’s fidgeting became unbearable. You raised an eyebrow at her as she crossed and uncrossed her legs for the hundredth time, an affectionate smile painting your face. “Do you want to watch it at double speed?”
“Oh, thank god. Yes, please,” she said, heaving a sigh of relief. “Seriously, I don’t know how you can watch this. It’s torture.”
“I never said I liked every silent film,” you replied, getting up to speed up the movie. As you sat back down, you noticed that Tara was shivering. You took off your hoodie and handed it to her with a smile.
“Are you sure?” she asked, glancing from you to the hoodie and back again.
“Yeah, take it. The library is always freezing, and I run hot anyway.”
“Thanks.” She took the hoodie from you, and you realized she had a scar on the palm of her left hand. You couldn’t quite tell, but it looked like it was almost parallel to the one on the back of her hand. But before you could decide if it would be too insensitive to ask about, you saw her poking curiously at the snake embroidered on your favorite hoodie. She looked more adorable than you could’ve imagined, and you weren’t sure how you’d ever tear your eyes away.
Luckily, your hoodie seemed to have placated Tara, and she sat still for the rest of the film. Whether she actually paid attention remained to be seen, but as long as she wasn’t complaining you considered it a win.
“Thank god,” Tara professed when it finally ended. “That was the most boring movie I’ve ever seen.”
You smiled at her. “Now we just need to finish the assignment, and then we never have to talk about it again.”
“I hate you.”
“Uh-huh.” You nodded, opening a new Word document. “What did you notice?”
“Professor Johnson was right. There were a lot of close-up shots.”
“Yes, but what purpose did they serve?”
“I don’t know, making me uncomfortable? Why can’t you just give me the answers, I thought that was the whole point of watching it together.”
You shook your head. “I said I’d help you, not do it for you. The point is for us to collaborate.”
“My fist will collaborate with your face,” she grumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing!” she said, smiling up at you innocently.
“Why did they make you uncomfortable?” you prompted, choosing to ignore her.
“The angles were weird and the shots were so long. It felt like I was stuck in her head- oh.”
“There you go!” you cheered. “Now do you get why we had to watch this movie?”
“It’s still a terrible movie,” she insisted, but she couldn’t keep the shy smile off her face. “But maybe that was a really cool effect. And maybe I kinda, sorta, almost, just a little bit liked it a lot.”
You beamed. “I’m so proud of you!”
“Shut up,” she mumbled, blushing.
It didn’t take you too long to finish the assignment. And if you let her write down some of your thoughts, well, nobody needed to know. She put away her laptop and stood up, preparing to leave.
“Wait,” you said, holding up a hand to stop her. “Do you have anywhere to be right now?”
“No, why?”
“Well, if you want, the room is still reserved for a couple more hours. I figured we could watch a horror movie or something, to cleanse our palates.”
“Yeah, that sounds great!” she smiled. “Good job, Burgers. Maybe this is why I keep this class.”
“Happy to be of service,” you joked. “I’m glad you don’t have plans. I mean, I still would’ve enjoyed watching a movie without my roommate barging in and interrupting, but I’d rather watch something with you.”
“So, what do you want to watch?”
“You’re the horror movie expert, right? You choose.”
She tapped her finger against her chin. “Hereditary. It’s Ari Aster’s first film, I think you’ll love it.”
“Aye aye, captain,” you smirked, saluting her. You started the movie and sat back in your chair, and Tara laid her head on your shoulder.
You knew anything would seem exciting after watching The Passion of Joan of Arc, so you happily settled in for another slow-burn elevated horror movie. And it lived up to your expectations for a while. But then you felt Tara tense, hiding her eyes in the crook of your neck, and then-
“Holy fucking shit!”
It quickly became your favorite scary movie.

Team Building Antics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So after having rewatched Season 1 of Strange New Worlds and the Season 2 Premier, I’ve gotten inspired to write stories based on my ideas of post episodes scenes that I cant get out of my head! So, here’s my idea based off the Season 2 episode The Broken Circle.
To say Admiral April wasn’t pleased with the Enterprise crew when they came back was an understatement. Most of his annoyance was due to the fact that he himself would have to be responsible for handling the disciplinary measures for the crew. Normally a ship’s Captain or First Officer would handle internal discipline for crewmembers who stepped out of line, but Captain Pike was off looking for a lawyer for Una and Spock… well Spock was today the cause of the discipline issues.
So here he was, stuck in his office all night trying to come up with an appropriate disciplinary measure for the Enterprise’s command crew before they returned to Starbase One tomorrow. Initially he’d promised Spock that his only punishment would be his Klingon sized hangover, but recent events had pushed him to consider Admiral’s Mast.
This wasn’t the first time the Enterprise and its crew had gone off the reservation or butted heads with official orders and regulations. Plus, with war on the horizon, he needed everyone in the fleet to learn how to work together.
Just then, an idea came to him. April stood up and smile as he keyed the comms. “Computer send a recorded message to LT Spock on the USS Enterprise.”
The computer chirped in acknowledgement, waiting for him to compose his message. “LT Spock, upon arrival at Starbase One, I want to see you and your command crew in my office at 0900 sharp, April Out.”
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
When Spock had learned he, Noonien-Singh, Mitchell, Uhura, M’Benga Ortegas had been summoned to speak with the Admiral when they returned to base, it had put him on edge. The admiral had indeed been furious with him when he’d reported back in with his hangover no less, but he’d logically assumed that the hangover would be their only punishment.
And now here they all were, sitting outside the Admiral’s office for several minutes waiting for the proverbial hammer to drop. Each member of the crew was displaying telltale signs of nervousness. Jenna kept fidgeting with her uniform, Erica kept trying to find a comfortable way to sit but couldn’t sit still, Nyota kept talking under her breath, Spock theorizing that she was prepping her defense if asked.
Only M’Benga and La’an didn’t display outward signs of concern. M’Benga’s eyes followed each of the nervous crewmembers taking stock of their ticks. La’an meanwhile sat at attention like she normally did in briefings though he did notice a slight tension in her jaws, something he noticed she’d displayed more than once during other trying situations. He started wondering why now he was noticing this in her, theorizing that his lack of emotional control might be making him more aware of her.
Before he could theorize further, the Admiral’s aide informed them that the Admiral was ready to see them. The group nervously walked into his office to see Admiral April sitting down by his desk. “Please sit down.”
They complied silently. The Admiral got up from his chair and circled around to stand right in front of them all. “You’ve all created quite a mess for us to deal with. Somehow in the course of a single day, the six of you managed to disobey my orders…” Spock bit his lip.
He continued “-fake a warp core breach” causing Jenna and Nyota to rub their necks in embarrassment.
“-steal a Federation starship” Ortegas grimaced.
“… And yet somehow you all manage to rescue a member of your own crew and stop a war from breaking out between us and the Klingons.” He finished as the crew waiting with bated breath too concerned to even breath.
After a minute, Spock finally ventured making a remark. “Sir as I said before, the responsibility for this event is entirely mine…”
April interrupted him. “As Captain it is indeed your responsibility however you definitely couldn’t steal the Enterprise without help. Everyone here played a role in the events of the past few days.”
He took a breath and grabbed his PADD. “The Enterprise is the flagship of the fleet and represents the best of Starfleet. But this little stunt isn’t the first time the crew has balked Starfleet rules. The Kiley 279 incident, flying into unaligned space without authorization, plus all the complaints I’m fielding from Operational Support about this crew’s resistance to the technical upgrades.”
The crew all quietly grimaced and shuffled their feet in discomfort. April continued. “I’d like to nick this trend before it becomes a serious issue. So, here’s what’s going to happen. All of you here will have your shore leave revoked and you’ll spend the rest of your time in space dock taking part in a series of team building exercises.”
April passed his PADD to Spock to read. “This is a very extensive list sir.” Spock choked out, his dismay evident.
“Sir, with all due respect.” Ortegas interjected. “We’ve proven ourselves time and time again. Why do we need to take part in these ridiculous exercises?”
April smiled. “Because your ability to work with others inside Starfleet is also important. As is your ability to work within the rules. You may not like some of our regulations, but they exist for a reason.”
La’an raised her hand slowly. “Uh… sorry don’t mean to be that person but why am I involved in this conversation? After all, I didn’t actually steal the Enterprise…”
“But you have been gone from the fleet for months now. Consider this a chance to help reintegrate yourself back into fleet life.” April replied before turning to everyone.
“Sir if I may.” Spock added. “When we spoke, you state our only punishment would be my hangover. What may I ask changed your mind?
“Oh this isn’t punishment Mr. Spock.” April countered. “This is a team building exercise intended to help this crew work better together within Starfleet regulations.”
“I fail to see the distinction.” Spock admitted.
April then sighed. “You’re all dismissed.”
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Spock had been correct in his initial statement that the team building event was quite extensive. April had arranged for them to take part in several exercises over the course of the next two weeks. The first of those events being a mindfulness meditation workshop in one of Starbase One’s biomes.
The event had proven to be a complete failure. Spock had found the event completely useless since Vulcan had taught him everything he needed to know about meditation. He’d spent the entire event ignoring the counselor’s words and indeed trying to put himself into his own meditative state. Though the actions of other crew members made that harder.
He was currently sitting in the back alternating between trying to find his own center and observing the actions of the crew.
Ortegas couldn’t sit still for very long without having to readjust and move around. Jenna, sitting next to her wasn’t doing much better. Spock had observed that Jenna just looked exhausted, and she kept dozing off while trying to center. One time, Ortegas had accidently knocked Jenna on the head while readjusting her seat and had woken up the other officer. Jenna had responded by stealing one of Ortega’s pillows.
Uhura and M’Benga at least were trying to get something out of it. Spock could see that Uhura had tried to engage in the meditation and had succeeded for a few minutes before it seemed that something and had entered her mind and distracted her. By now, she’d looked bored. M’Benga had actually been in a meditative trance before he’d been interrupted by Jenna and Erica’s antics. Annoyed, he’d picked up the book beside his station and smacked both young women on the back of the head eliciting soft owes from both.
His voice just above a whisper but filled with the paternalistic tone he’d no doubt used before. “Behave children.”
His words having an immediate silencing effect on the two women who both silently went back to trying to meditate.
La’an sitting next to Spock and having just as hard of a time focusing stifled a laugh at the event she just saw. She noticed Spock eyeing her. “Sorry.” She whispered.
“Do not worry.” Spock replied. “My focus is not on my meditation.”
“So where was it?” La’an asked.
“I must admit my focus was on returning to duty on Enterprise.” Spock admitted.
“Always the workaholic.” La’an smiled.
“Not exactly what I meant.” Spock admitted.
“Oh?” La’an asked, intrigued by Spock’s admission as well as the fact that he’d offered this up so freely.
“I must admit, seeing you back with us now fills me with hope.” Spock said.
“Hope for what” La’an asked?
“My time on the Enterprise has been very… agreeable. And while at times the crew can be exasperating.” He nodded his head in the direction of Ortegas and Mitchell who had gone back to their antics though slightly quieter than normal. “I would not have it any other way.”
La’an smiled. “Spock are you saying that you missed me?” She smirked and moved her hand from her spot to rest on Spock’s leg.
Spock tensed up a bit before responding. “I supposed I did.”
Just then the bell rang indicating that the session was over and the crew was released for the day.
“Oh thank God.” Ortegas remarked as she quickly stood up.
“I don’t know about you guys but I could definitely use a drink.” Jenna admitted as Erica nodded emphatically in agreement.
M’Benga smirked his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Mr Spock I’m not sure if these two should even be considered old enough to drink. What with them acting like five year-olds all day.”
The two women looked between each other. “First rounds on us?” Erica offered.
Everyone smiled as Nyota commented. “Sounds like a plan to me. Would you like to join us sir?” Nyota turned to Spock.
“Me?” Spock asked, surprised to be getting an offer to socialize with the crew.
“Yeah, I mean we all stole a ship together. Creates a bond.” Nyota smiled.
“Plus, we can workshop your captain’s chair thing.” Erica added as everyone began walking out of the biome and towards the bar.
“What is wrong with my thing?” Spock asked.
“Nothing at all.” Jenna admitted. “But it could always use some improvement.”
“Spock has a thing now?” La’an asked shuffling closer to the science officer. “Like how Chris always says Hit It?”
“Oh yeah.” Nyota said stifling a laugh.
“This I got to hear.” La’an smiled.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The 602 Club crowd had arrived in force just before the Enterprise crew arrived. The music was blasting through the club with patrons dancing on the floor, huddle around the bar for a drink or sitting down at a booth.
The crew had taken the time to change into more appropriate club attire before regrouping at the bar that night. Now they were all sitting down at a booth at an elevate level that oversaw the dance floor. Erica was the last to arrive with two very large bottles of something Erica only referred to as liquid courage.
Spock had initially resisted the drink when it was passed to him, his mind still remembering the hangover from Cajitar Four. Though La’an coaxing convinced him to just nurse the drink for the night.
The night had gone off quite well. Christine had stopped by to pay homage to those in the Admiral’s Doghouse as she called it. The girls had all gone out onto the dance floor a few times to dance the night away. During some of the slower songs, Erica and Christine had gone out to the dance floor together. Uhura had taken those times to ask M’Benga if he could show her how to dance as well. He’d graciously done so much like how a father might teach a daughter before her first dance. Jenna had spent most of time going back and forth from the bar getting everyone’s drinks. She’d been offered to dance with others but had politely declined stating that she wasn’t a great dancer.
Spock had sympathized with her and had stayed at the booth most of the night watching the rest of the crew have their fun. That was until La’an had dragged him out to the dance floor. Spock had tried to refuse but the alcohol had dulled his resistance.
The pair got on the dance floor as the next song, a romantic one played. Spock followed the song’s beat content with a simple eight count step. La’an followed his lead gracefully.
“I didn’t know you could dance.” She admitted, surprise in her voice.
“I have never claimed to not know how to dance.” Spock replied as he continued the dance.
“I guess I’m just more surprised you agreed to come let alone actually come out on the dance floor.” La’an replied.
Spock, now confident in the basic eight count now began spinning La’an out in step before pulling her in. “After Valeo Beta V, I’ve had a difficulty controlling some of my emotions. Perhaps that loss of control is part of the reason I agreed to come out tonight.”
“Does that scare you” La’an asked, some concern in her voice. She knew how important his emotional control was to him, to all Vulcans in fact.
“I will not lie, it does.” Spock admitted as he moved to dip La’an just as the song neared its end. “But I will not let my fear control me. I will face this experience and face this fear.”
La’an smiled at the bottom of the dip and cupped his face. “I believe you will.”
As the song got to an end, the pair walked off the dance floor feeling an energy they hadn’t before. As they neared their booth, that euphoria turned into concern as they saw the events unfolding.
Three very drunk patrons were standing on opposite sides of Jenna Mitchell boxing her into her seat. “Hello there beautiful, how bough you and I share a nice dance tonight at my place?”
Jenna, still somewhat drunk though guarded tried to let the man down gently. “No thank you. I’m here with my friends, I’m not here looking for a hookup.”
But the man didn’t let it go. He closed the gap with Jenna and pushed her back into her seat. “Come on now you tease. Don’t you go turning me down yet.”
“I believe she said she wasn’t interested.” Spock announced in his command voice, getting the attention of the two men.
“Why don’t you butt out man!” The second man yelled. “This ain’t your business.”
“Oh?” La’an growled. “You’re both accosting our friend. So that makes it our business.”
“I suggest you leave this be girly.” The third man state showing the grip of a phaser pistol in his belt. “Unless you want trouble.”
“You all will be in deep trouble if you threaten a Starfleet officer once more.” Spock threatened.
“I’m done with this shit.” The first man said as he grabbed Jenna’s wrist and attempted to pull her out with him. Jenna kneed him in the groin and twisted his arm behind his back. The second man whirled around to face Jenna and managed to lay a solid punch to her face, knocking her to the ground and causing her to release her grip on the first man. The third man grabbed his phaser and tried to level it at Spock but the Vulcan acted fast twisting the man’s wrist and ripping the weapon from his hand.
The fight had caused at the music to stop as a crowd formed around the fighting. The first man recovered fast and charged La’an knocking her into the nearby table. La’an threw the man off her so she could get back to her feet. The man grabbed a broken bottle and swung it at La’an but she effortlessly dodged it. After a few strikes, she was able to wrap her arm around the arm holding the broken bottle, immobilizing it. She then kept striking harder and harder at the man’s head and gut hoping to knock him out while trying to block his hits from his free arm. But her strikes were more precise than his drunken swings and her hits eventually caused the man to pass out.
Spock meanwhile was facing down his attacker. With the man’s phaser busted, the man had tried a series of strikes only for Spock’s superior reflexes to catch and reflect them. Growing frustrated, the man charged Spock intent on taking him down. Spock flipped the man over his head and threw him down on a table nearby causing it to break under the force of the man’s weight.
The pair both realized their opponents were down and turned to face the final opponent who’d been attacking Jenna, only to find that the last man too was unconscious on the floor. Based on the liquid on the man’s head, the shattered glass around his and the broken bottle in Jenna’s hand, the two surmised that Jenna had smashed one of their bottles on the man’s head to knock him out.
As the adrenaline seeped from their bodies, the rest of the crew had made their way through the crowd to the scene before them.
By now, with the fight over, the crowd had dispersed leaving the officers and few onlookers and the only people there. Dr M’Benga and Christine each took a second to access the damage done as their friends were each sporting a few injuries themselves. Jenna had a bruise under her eye where she’d been sucker punched. La’an had a few scrapes on her arms from behind thrown to the floor. Spock however looked no worse for wear.
“Ow.” Jenna grimaced as M’Benga applied a makeshift icepack to the woman’s head.
“Well maybe next time you get into a fight.” The doctor said jokingly. “Try not to block closed fists with your face.
Christine meanwhile was pulling out a few glass shards from La’an back. “We leave you three alone for a few minutes to get drinks and you all start a bar brawl.”
“You know what’s gonna come next right?” Erica asked rhetorically.
Nyota nodded. “Yeah, The Admiral is going to kill us.”
“Perhaps not.” Spock offered drawing the attention of the others. “The point of this exercise was to teach us teamwork while still obeying Starfleet regulations. An investigation will clearly show we were not the instigators of this conflict and that we only fought back to defend ourselves, well within Starfleet rules.”
The group was stunned into silence at Spock’s explanation. La’an then had a wide smile. “Oh I can’t wait to see you make that explanation to the Admiral when he finds out.”

Blood, Sex, and the American Dream: X review
Tumblr media
Pictured above is the “X” poster. Image credit: A24
I’m aware that this movie came out on March 18, 2022 which makes me a little late to do this review, but it’s better to be late than never covering this movie. The reason I haven’t covered this movie yet is because I didn’t have a Tumblr account or the “X” DVD yet. So, let’s just cut to the chase and start this review. I’m going to give you my spoiler free thoughts on this movie.
X is a 2022 slasher horror film directed by Ti West who also produced and edited this movie (The House of The Devil and The Sacrament). X is produced by Jared Connon, Scott Mescudi, Dennis Cummings, Jacob Jaffke, Harrison Kreiss, Ashley Levinson, Sam Levinson, Karina Manashil, Peter Phok, and Kevin Turen. The soundtrack is done by Tyler Bates and Chelsea Wolfe. The cast involves Mia Goth as Maxine “Max” Minx/Pearl, Jenna Ortega as Lorraine, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) as Jackson, Martin Henderson as Wayne, Owen Campbell as RJ, Brittany Snow as Bobby-Lynne, Stephen Ure as Howard, James Gaylyn as Sheriff Gentler, Simon Prast as Televangelist, Geoff Dolan as Deputy, Matthew J. Saville as Officer Mitchell, and Bryony Skillington as Store Clerk.
The plot:
A group of actors set out to make an adult film in rural Texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts---an elderly couple with a farm and boarding house for rent. But when the couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in a desperate fight for their lives in this tantalizing slasher from writer-director Ti West.
Positives:
One positive I have about this movie is the cast, each cast member played their parts perfectly…especially Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega. I think that every horror fan must have seen the Jenna Ortega scream scene in the trailer, and it gave me chills when I was watching that scene. That might have been one of the best screams I have ever heard…in my opinion. The characters were extremely likeable, and you feel bad when something awful happens to them…the movie also makes you sympathize with the villains in this movie…especially the character of Pearl.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Jenna Ortega in X (2022)

The second positive I have about this movie was the special effects as it seems like every kill has been done practically which has been missing in modern horror films…okay not all modern horror films. The special effects in this movie are amazing and the makeup and special effects department deserve more credit. The elderly makeup on Mia Goth makes her look unrecognizable.
The third positive I have about X was the atmosphere as I feel like they nailed the 70’s aesthetic with the clothing choice, the cinematography, and the music. It felt like a 70’s-late 80’s slasher which is one of my favorite eras in horror history.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Mia Goth as Pearl in this stunning red lighting.
Negatives:
The only negative I have about X is that the motives of Pearl and Howard aren’t clear, we get hints throughout, but it doesn’t pay off. However, don’t let that negative affect your viewing of X as this movie is rewatchable.
My overall thoughts:
After watching this movie, I can say that this is an excellent throwback to late 70’s-early 80’s slashers. This is a fun movie, and it gives you likeable characters to keep you invested. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Where to watch X?
X (2022) can be watched on digital retailers, Showtime, Blu-Ray, and DVD.

Who are all your favourite actors/actresses? If you don't mind sharing ❤️
Hmmm... I don't really have any favourite actors or actresses because I don't follow the industry beyond the franchises and characters portrayed, but actors like Evan Peters, Song Seung-Heon, Bruce Campbell, Joseph Quinn, Brendan Fraser, Eddie Murphy, Tim Curry and John Malkovich spring to mind. And for actresses, uhh... Definitely Kathy Bates!!! Also Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Jenna Ortega, Lupita Nyong'o, Go Ara... I can't really think of anyone else I especially enjoy. And even then, I wouldn't say I go out of my way to watch their filmographies but if they're in something, I'll at least consider watching it with a bit more weight than I otherwise would .💓
What about you, nonnie?🥹
