Transcript below the cut:
[Casual chatter mixed with competitive shrieking and shit talking]
Lex: Yay! You’re here. Asher: Yep. What’re you playing? Lex: Party Frenzy and I’m kicking ass. Kamryn: That’s because she cheats. Lex: Bullshit!
Asher: Hey guys. Tess: Hey! We have an extra seat if you want me to deal you in. Asher: Nah. Thanks. Maybe later.
Evan: Since when do you drink beer? Asher: [shrugs] Since today, I guess.
Evan: Pretty sure there’s whiskey in there. Let me make you a drink. Asher: No, please don’t. This is fine. Evan: Okay. If you change your mind…
Evan: Well, I’m glad you could make it. Been a while. Asher: Yeah, I almost didn’t, but Lex wasn’t taking “no” for an answer. Evan: She rarely does. Asher: True.
Evan: So, how are things with you and Atlas? Asher: Great, actually. We, um, got married. Evan: No shit! When did this happen?
Asher: Just last week. We eloped while we were in Selvadorada. Evan: That’s great, man. Congratulations!
Asher: Thank you. Evan: Y’know, he’s a… he’s a lucky guy.
Asher: Yeah. Well, so am I. Evan: Right. Yeah, of course.
Asher: What about you? How’s Chris? Evan: Oh, uh, we broke up last month. Asher: Sorry to hear that.
Evan: [shrugs] It’s okay. It was for the best. We wanted different things, y’know. I want to settle down and do the whole marriage and kids thing, and apparently, he doesn’t. It seemed the best thing was to end it; to let each other go so we can find people that want the same things we do. Otherwise, we’d probably just end up resenting each other.
Asher: Makes sense. That sucks though. Evan: Yeah. It does. You’re lucky. You and Atlas always seem to be on the same page. Must be nice. Asher: [nods] Evan: You think you guys will have kids?
Asher: [scoffs] Why does everyone keep asking me that? Evan: Sorry, I didn’t mean—
Asher: I swear to god, we’ve been married for two fucking seconds and suddenly everyone wants to know if we’re having kids. As if it’s ANY of your business! Jesus Fucking Christ!
[Door slams] Lex: Ash?!
Lex: What did you say to him? Evan: I’m not really sure.

My Boat
by Raymond Carver
My boat is being made to order. Right now it’s about to leave The hands of its builders. I’ve reserved a special place for it down at the marina. It’s going to have plenty of room on it for all my friends: Richard, Bill, Chuck, Toby, Jim, Hayden, Gary, George, Harold, Don, Dick, Scott, Geoffrey, Jack, Paul, Jay, Morris, and Alfredo. All my friends! They know who they are. Tess, of course. I wouldn’t go anyplace without her. And Kristina, Merry, Catherine, Diane, Sally, Annick, Pat, Judith, Susie, Lynne, Annie Jane, Mona. Doug and Amy! They’re family, but they’re also my friends, and they like a good time. There’s room on my boat for just about everyone. I’m serious about this! There’ll be a place on board for everyone’s stories. My own, but also the ones belonging to my friends. Short stories, and the ones that go on and on. The true and the made-up. The ones already finished, and the ones still being written. Poems, too! Lyric poems, and the longer, darker narratives. For my painter friends, paints and canvases will be on board my boat. We’ll have fried chicken, lunch meat, cheeses, rolls, French bread. Every good thing that my friends like and I like. And a big basket of fruit, in case anyone wants fruit. In case anyone wants to say he or she ate an apple, or some grapes, on my boat. Whatever my friends want, name it, and it’ll be there. Soda pop of all kinds. Beer and wine, sure. No one will be denied anything, on my boat. We’ll go out into the sunny harbor and have fun, that’s the idea. Just have a good time all around. Not thinking about this or that or getting ahead or falling behind. Fishing poles if anyone wants to fish. The fish are out there! We may even go a little way down the coast, on my boat. But nothing dangerous, nothing too serious. The idea is simply to enjoy ourselves and not get scared. We’ll eat and drink and laugh a lot, on my boat. I’ve always wanted to take at least one trip like this, with my friends, on my boat. If we want to we’ll listen to Schumann on the CBC. But if that doesn’t work out, okay, we’ll switch to KRAB, The Who, and the Rolling Stones. Whatever makes my friends happy! Maybe everyone will have their own radio on my boat. In any case, we’re going to have a big time. People are going to have fun, and do what they want to do, on my boat.

COLIBRÌ
per Tess
Fai conto che io dica estate,
scriva la parola “colibrì”,
la metta in una busta,
la porti giù per la discesa
fino alla buca. Quando tu aprirai
la lettera, ti verranno in mente
quei giorni e quanto,
ma proprio tanto, ti amo.

Hummingbird
For Tess
By Raymond Carver
Suppose I say summer,
write the word “hummingbird,”
put it in an envelope,
take it down the hill
to the box. When you open
my letter you will recall
those days and how much,
just how much, I love you.

PER TESS
Scritto da:
Matteo Ducceschi
Liberamente tratta dalla poesia:
Per Tess – Raymond Carver (1999)
INT. APPARTAMENTO UOMO GIORNO
UOMO (V.O.) Giù nello Stretto le onde schiumano
come dicono qui.
UOMO (V.O.)
UOMO (V.O.) Lo stesso vento che soffia giù
nello Stretto, eppure è diverso.
INT. STANZA BUIA NOTTE
UOMO (V.O.) Mentre me ne stavo lì sdraiato a
occhi chiusi, dopo essermi immaginato come sarebbe stato
(MORE)
2.
UOMO (V.O.)
rialzarmi, ho pensato a te.
UOMO (V.O.) Ho aperto gli occhi e mi sono
alzato subito e son ritornato a esser contento.
Sorride.

LMAO I realize there's literally six days left of the poll but twenty of you have engaged my little goblin brain so here you go!! one of the Dragon Age 2 fanfiction scraps, just for y'all! under a break for length, context for the scrap provided
OKAY SO CONTEXT BEFORE WE GO FURTHER I remember wanting to play with the "modern girl in thedas" trope a bit- my character, Tess, decided to keep quiet about her knowledge of the games and pull strings as best as she could on her own. But she kept a diary iirc, and Hawke found it. So even though Leandra's death was thwarted, Hawke is pissed.
PS- Tiptoe is Hawke's mabari PPS- it's my personal headcanon that everyone in the DA2 crew was at least a little in love with everyone else. This was going to be a Fenris/OFC/Varric longfic, spanning DA2 into DAI. If the scraps go over well (I've got like, four-ish? five??) I may try turning them into something. lmk what you think!
Hawke’s eyes narrowed and he scowled, stalking towards me. “You knew. You fucking knew my mother was being courted by the blood mage that had been kidnapping and murdering women and you said nothing!”
I saw the swing coming. I could’ve dodged it, but instead I chose to lean into Hawke’s fist as it slammed into my left cheek, the momentum sending me spinning into a low table. My hands reached out to catch my fall, and I upended both the table as well as a vase in the process - one of Leandra’s favorites, I distantly recalled. It smashed into dozens of shards on the tiled floor, and I landed on the sharp pieces littering the ground; they dug painfully into the skin of my palms, the tiny pricks causing small red cuts to bloom.
Silence reigned for a moment, Hawke’s wide, startled eyes meeting mine. I could already feel the skin on my left cheek swelling, a ring on his finger leaving a deep cut just under my eye. Anger quickly overrode my surprise however, and I turned a glare his way.
“Feel better?” I demanded, carefully extricating myself from the upended table and shattered porcelain. “We’ve been over this before, Hawke. I can’t tell you everything I know because then things change in ways I can’t prepare for.
“Your mother is alive and well, sleeping in her room. She’s healthy, whole, and breathing. Her severed head hasn’t been attached to the pieces of the other missing women like the world’s worst jigsaw puzzle and animated by fucking blood magic because I saved her.” I was up in Hawke’s personal space now, bloodied finger poking his chest for emphasis. His face had lost all color, eyes alight with horror. Guilt was sitting in the back of my mind, trying to get me to calm down, but I was beyond caring at this point. Hawke wanted to know what I knew? Fine.
“You know what else, Hawke?” I asked, my voice rising in pitch. “You know what else I’ve kept quiet about because I’ve been so fucking careful about your feelings all these years? Your family, your entire family, is supposed to leave you. Your parents, Bethany, Carver, all of them. I wasn’t there for Bethany or Malcolm. But Carver? Why do you think I sided with your mother about him not going to the Deep Roads? He was going to contract the Taint and die. That was the only way out of there for him unless you’d also taken Anders with you, and then the fucking best case scenario was your baby brother being made a Grey Warden and getting sent to Weisshaupt. So I made sure he didn’t go, and he became a templar instead. I think him working with Cullen Rutherford is a pretty good fucking step above dying in some Maker-forsaken abandoned thaig or living a half-life fighting fucking darkspawn!”
Hawke looked like he was going to vomit, but I didn’t stop talking, though I did start walking towards the door. My cheek hurt, and either tears or swelling were making it difficult to see. Probably both. I think the cuts on my hands were also starting to leave dots of blood on the tile. I’d have to apologize to Orana later.
“But the worst thing, Hawke? The worst fucking thing I know? Is that Anders is supposed to leave you too. And I’m working on making sure that doesn’t happen because you are in love with him, and enough has already changed because of me that I think his leaving would break you. Because Kirkwall needs you, and will continue to need you. So I’m going to keep doing what I need to do in order to support you, and our friends, and this city, and the Free Marches, and Thedas, whether you fucking like it or not, you goddamn fucking asshole!”
I’d grabbed the bedroom’s door knob and stepped into the hallway by the end of my tirade, and I slammed the door behind me as hard as my stinging hands would allow before storming down the stairs towards Hawke’s front door. I was silently thankful that Orana, Bodhan, and Sandal were either out or willfully ignoring the exchange and Tiptoe was guarding Leandra; no one caught sight of my walk of shame out of the house. Hawke did not follow me.
Once I was outside, I had to decide where to go. I already knew I wasn’t going to tell anyone Hawke had hurt me; I wasn’t going to color anyone’s opinions of him with tensions so high in the city. The Qunari uprising was only months away and Meredith didn’t need the “Hawke beats people up when in a fit of pique” rationale in her back pocket.
Fenris’ place was closest, but he was likely in Lowtown with the others at the Hanged Man. But going to the Hanged Man meant seeing Varric, and putting those two together when I had an injury and an undisclosed assailant was unwise. They’d poke holes in my story faster than I could string it together. Fenris and Varric adored Hawke; They were both in love with him just as much as I was in love with them and I couldn’t taint his image for them. Of course Hawke wasn’t infallible; Hawke made mistakes. He made bad calls, accidentally set off traps, got his shit wrecked by surprise dragons at the Bone Pit. But Hawke didn’t hit his friends or shove them into furniture when he was upset. I wanted to, had to believe this was a one-off incident caused by the stress of nearly losing his mother. But that didn’t mean I was going to stick around to let it happen to me again.
I can pull strings from the shadows, I thought, my feet headed towards Lowtown despite my reservations. I think. I would just have to be somewhere else while I did it. I could still be in Kirkwall, just maybe not as close to the action?
All of Kirkwall is close to the action, Tess, I mentally reminded myself, choosing to enter the Hanged Man from the kitchen side, out of view of patrons, keen-eyed dwarves, and lyrium-branded elves. I knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. I can write clues down, give vague dates, leave it in a book for them, and let Hawke figure this shit out on his own. Then get my ass to down Haven and wait for Solas to fuck up and go from there. Maybe if I intervene early enough I can even help Felassan-
“Tess?” Norah’s voice cut through my mental wanderings. I looked up to meet her horrified gaze. “Maker’s breath, Tess, what happened? Did someone attack you? Come inside.”
oh my god I found some very indulgent Dragon Age 2 fanfic scraps from like, five years ago while cleaning out my google drive
#sassy speaks#dragon age 2#da2#fanfiction#just a scrap though#might turn into something idk#it's been years since I wrote anything of substance

Who wants love? I’ve never had it. I didn’t ask for it now. There’s something else though. Something I’ve had all my life. Something I thought I’d have to die to get rid of. Have you ever been hungry, Giulio? Well, I have. They tell me it’s as strong as love. Well, I’ll tell you, it’s stronger.

Character Introductions
We have a lot of new-ish faces in this part of my story, and that’s because we’re getting to know Atlas, Asher, and Lex’s friend group! They’re all going to be sticking around for a bit, whether they’ll be background characters or take on more important roles remains to be seen. Either way, I thought it would be a good idea to take a minute to officially introduce them all and tell you how they all know each other.
Now, I say “new-ish” faces because all of these characters were in The Past arc in the last part of my story. Some of them had dialogue, but most were just milling about in the background. The important thing to know is that they’ve all been friends for years and have become a pretty tight-knit little group.
If you'd like to know more about each of them, then proceed below the cut:
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Evan Gender/Pronouns: Nonbinary, They/Them Sexuality: Queer
Traits: Genius, Geek, Creative, Perfectionist, Outgoing, Morning Sim Personality Archetypes: Sage & Artist Career: Video Game Level Designer at Rainy Day Entertainment
Important Details: Evan is probably the most recognizable atp. They were one of the first people Asher met on his first day at Rainy Day, and the two of them have worked closely ever since. They have amazing compatibility and have developed a pretty close friendship over the years. As far as the rest of the group, Evan has known them since they started at Rainy Day about a year before Asher did. The only one they knew prior to that is Charlee.
They tend to get stuck in the details, but it makes them very good at what they do. They’re extroverted and very sweet, but often clueless when it comes to certain social cues. It’s nearly impossible for them to hide what they’re thinking or feeling, which can be either annoying or refreshing depending on the situation.
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Charlee, Peanut (inside joke – only Evan calls her this) Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her Sexuality: Bisexual
Traits: Good, Geek, Bookworm, Vegetarian, Goofball Personality Archetypes: Sage & Jester Career: Manages a local bookstore
Important Details: Often found with her nose buried in a sci-fi book, or on the computer going down random rabbit holes about some conspiracy theory or another. Absolutely believes in aliens, ghosts, vampires, and time travel. Full of useless facts, puns, and pranks.
Charlee grew up next door to Evan, and the two of them have been best friends since childhood. However, she didn’t meet anyone else until the day she met Blaire. At the time, she had just started working part-time at the bookstore and Blair was visiting while on a book tour. The two unexpectedly hit it off, and Charlee was later introduced to Lex and Tess… only to find out that Lex worked with her best friend! And the rest is history.
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Blair Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her Sexuality: Lesbian
Traits: Self-Assured, Creative, Bookworm, Noncommittal, Dance Machine, Muser Personality Archetypes: Artist & Lover Career: Author – Writes mystery novels
Important Details: In the middle of a long series of mystery novels and becoming quite famous. When she’s not writing, Blair has a passion for dancing and kick boxing. She is blunt and flirtatious and would do literally anything for her friends and family. She lost a sibling unexpectedly at twenty years old, and it changed her entire outlook on life. She’s regularly championing for her friends to follow their dreams (including Atlas and Asher), and she’s the first person most of them are likely to call if they’re ever in trouble.
Blair used to date Tess and is currently dating Lex. She met Lex at a queer speed dating event when she first moved to San Myshuno. They didn’t hit it off romantically at first and remained just friends until a few years ago.
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Tess Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her Sexuality: Lesbian
Traits: Art Lover, Creative, Perfectionist, Neat, Loyal Personality Archetypes: Artist & Caregiver Career: Financial Analyst for a big corporation in Uptown (fun fact: the same corporation Dawn worked at when she first met Phoenix)
Important Details: Tess is good at her job, but she hates it. She has a passion for photography, and Blair is constantly trying to talk her into taking the leap to open her own studio, but she’s afraid of letting go of the perceived stability/security that comes with her corporate job. Maybe she’ll do it one day, but today is not that day.
Tess and Blair used to date, but they quickly realized it wasn’t going to work out since Tess prefers exclusive romantic relationships, and Blair very much does not. However, the two have remained very good friends. Through Blair, she met Lex and the rest of the Rainy Day crew.
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Jensen or Jay, Jenny (Ash is the only person that gets away with calling him this) Gender/Pronouns: Cis man, He/Him Sexuality: Bisexual
Traits: Outgoing, Geek, ADHD, Loyal, Music Lover, Gregarious Personality Archetypes: Jester & Lover Career: Video Game Developer at Rainy Day Entertainment (will likely be promoted to replace Atlas as Lead Developer)
Important Details: Jensen is only one in the group that was friends with Atlas before anyone else. The two of them have worked side-by-side for nearly ten years… though both of them are usually wearing headphones… but they do chat a fair amount and are pretty good friends.
Jensen is super laid back and can get along with pretty much anyone. Once Lex and Evan started inviting him out with the group, he clicked with everyone else instantly. Aside from Atlas, he gets along most with Charlee, Blair, and Kamryn… and apparently, he’s hooking up with Charlee now… I didn’t see that coming, but I love that for them.
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Kamryn, Kam Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her Sexuality: Pansexual
Traits: Self-Assured, High Maintenance, Music Lover, Dog Lover, Materialistic, Night Owl Personality Archetypes: Hero & Sinister (interesting combo ??) Career: Video Game Character Design and Animation at Rainy Day Entertainment
Important Details: While she enjoys her job, Kamryn’s passion is music. She produces House music and DJ’s regularly at various local and out-of-town clubs. Blair and her often butt heads on whether she should leave her job to pursue music full-time. From Kam’s perspective, her day job pays the bills and allows her to make the music she wants to make, the way she wants to make it, without the pressure of needing to make money from it.
When she met Ash, she was so happy to finally meet another Dog Lover! They’re always talking about their dogs and sharing photos. Maybe when Ash gets another dog, one that actually lives with him in the city, they can take their dogs on play dates!
Preferred Name/Nickname(s): Aubree, Bree Gender/Pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her Sexuality: Bisexual
Traits: Creative, Loves the Outdoors, Foodie, Vegetarian, Cheerful, Observant, Mediator, Compassionate, Morning Sim Personality Archetypes: Artist & Jester Career: Video Game Architect at Rainy Day Entertainment
Important Details: Aubree is amazing!!! Next to Atlas, she’s the most introverted of the group. She’s one of those people that is really quiet, she just kinda sits back and listens, but then when she speaks, she says the most insightful things.
She hates conflict and avoids it at all costs, but she’s great helping others navigate it and find a middle ground. She has a unique ability to see and understand others’ perspectives and is usually the first person everyone wants to come to for advice.
Lex has adored her since she first met her, and immediately befriended her. It took her a while to feel comfortable with the group, but now they’re all like family to her.
Her and Atlas are interesting together... I feel like if he opened up to her, she'd have great advice for him... but they rarely talk. In fact, what he likes most about her is that she's one of the few people willing to just sit in comfortable silence... and vice versa.
#i tried to keep these short and succinct#but there are seven of them so it's quite long lol#thanks to anyone who took the time to read it#i don't know how many people are interested in oc facts and stuff#but i had fun putting it together so figured it was worth sharing#ofc now i want to put something together for my main characters#each of them would for sure need their own post#maybe i'll give it a try#especially since i don't see myself making a character page anytime soon#let me know if you'd be interested#i mean i'll probably do it either way#but if there's interest then i may just do it sooner yknow#goode life extras#oc facts#character summary#evan andrews#charlee rodriguez#blair hewitt#tess carver#jensen milligan#kamryn raines#aubree addams

Suppose I say summer
-Raymond Carver, “Hummingbird”
(For Tess)
From “A New Path to the Waterfall," poems completed in the last weeks of Carver's life and published posthumously, edited by his partner and fellow poet Tess Gallagher
The grief of “Summer Fog,” directly above, bleeds into the love in “Hummingbird”
“I light my first cigarette of the day and turn away from the window with a shudder. The foghorn sounds again, filling me with apprehension, and then, then stupendous grief.”
