100 Great Albums from 2024.
OK…
I listened to a lot of music this year, and I am not going to prattle on about it all this time because there's too much. These are the albums that came out this year that I really liked. They aren't in a specific order, but they are in a general order (closer to the top just means I listened to it more often, or responded enthusiastically/felt really strongly about it). I have been doing a lot of radio this year, and so I've listened to so much music. It's not trying to be a definitive top 100 list, I am sure I missed some gems, but these are things I personally liked. Then there are some special mentions at the end that include some reissues that include some reworked/additional material, and some compilations/live albums as well. Genres are all over the place, from heavy to light to weird to weirder. Check things out and enjoy the adventure.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lili-Babs, Samuel Barber, Carl Betz, the late, great guitarist Chris Bovard, Trevor Burton (The Move), John Cale, Robert Calvert (Hawkwind), Ornette Coleman, Jane Antonia Cornish, Jim Cregan, Jerry Eubanks (Marshall Tucker), Jimmie Fadden, Linda Fiorentino, Martin Fry (ABC), Will Geer, Mickey Gilley, Zakir Hussain, Raul Julia, Kato Kaelin, Laura Lee, Mahler’s 3rd Symphony (1897), Mark Mancina, Jeffrey Osborne, Lloyd Price, Bobby Sands, Thomas Schippers, Bodhi Setchko, Keely Smith, Taeyeon, Chris Thompson (Mannfred Mann’s Earth Band), Diego Torres, Robin Trower, U2’s 1987 JOSHUA TREE album, Gary Walker (Standells, Walker Brothers), Paul Winter, and one of the greatest frontman in rock’n’roll: Mark Lindsay, best known as the singer for Paul Revere & The Raiders. In their major label era of the 1960s and early 70s, PR&TR were one of the tightest and most visible acts in the business. They were the first real rock band signed to Columbia Records, and their garage band energy and declarative stage look pushed back on the British Invasion bands of 1964.
The Raiders kicked out hit after hit in multiple genres including bubblegum, country rock, hard rock, psychedelia, and soul/r’n’b, all with dazzling excellence. They cut the first definitive version of “Louie Louie” before leaving their Oregon base for Los Angeles, joining Terry Melcher (Byrds producer) to launch a prolific and innovative run of great records that still play today: “Just Like Me”, Kicks” and (recently in the film ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) “Good Thing,” “Hungry,” “Mr. Sun Mr. Moon,” etc. Between 1965 and 1970, as Dick Clark expanded his jukebox TV empires, he hired PR&TR to host three TV shows. Before The Monkees even twanged “Last Train to Clarksville,” PR&TR had already set the bar for TV bands, gluing pre-adolescent me to the tube with rock’n’roll comedy and ear candy—and there was eye candy for 1000s of girls screaming for teen idol Mark Lindsay. He set the bar as a powerhouse vocalist, able to croon soft sensual pop ballads then flip to paint-peeling bluesy growls.
The Raiders crested in 1971 with the #1 hit “Indian Reservation,” which was a repackaging of a Mark Lindsay solo recording (backed by the Wrecking Crew). As a solo act, Mark was already charting with “Silver Bird” and the hippy girl anthem “Arizona.” He branched into other music business roles, composing jingles and songs for films and TV shows. Legendary author Stephen King expressed his fan-dom with Mark’s 2001 cover of “Treat Her Right,” backed by Los Straitjackets.
Meanwhile, Mark’s career intersected with The Carpenters, The Chesterfield Kings, Eric Johnson, Carla Olson, Gerry Rafferty, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, and The Monkees, whose orbit led me to cross paths with Mark a couple of times, and he always treated me like a gentleman. I first saw him in concert in 1993, and it was a rock solid show loaded with the hits and deep cuts. Lately he’s been active doing radio shows and webcasts, the latest being “The American Revolution” on Sirius XM.
If I had to pick one Mark Lindsay track, it’s "Too Much Talk.” It blew my mind when I was a kid—my 45 of it cracked but I kept pressing it with my fingers till the vinyl tissued. The fidelity on this clip is a tad distorted, but the visuals speak volumes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG30aN53GkY Meanwhile, HB and thank you Mark for continuing to inspire and entertain with your skills and talents.

Starts With R, Part 1
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street / Big Change in the Weather
Excellent sound on both sides, and "Baker Street" in particular bursts out with quite the instrumentql flourish. Once the saxophone got going, I knew that I definitely had heard this song plenty of times before. Funny how you recognize things you don't have a name for. The B-Side is more subdued, but only in the sense that it lacks a prominent lusty sax riff; it's quite uptempo and lively. A good record.
Raiders - Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian) / Terry's Tune
An artifact of a particular era of socially conscious songwriting, which plants its feet firmly in a strong emotional identification with its subject, without bothering with the minutia of "research." If you know nothing about the Cherokee, you'll likely come away with a feeling of sympathy for their historical plight; that's the point, and that's all well and good. But if you do know something about the Cherokee, and the way that all indigenous Americans have been conflated and stereotyped in the popular imagination, you will probably be left frustrated. "Terry's Tune" is a little bluesy instrumental, and both sides are in pretty good shape. Side B does have a little something on it that makes a popping sound near the end, I couldn't get it off unfortunately.
Rare Earth - Get Ready / Magic Key
The good stuff: hard-edged r&b, and it's live! Well, it's live on Side A, anyway. You can't touch "Get Ready," as far as these things go. "Magic Key" is also pretty good, though there is something about going all out on a classic Motown cover that can't quite be matched. Give the people what they want.
Raspberries - Go All the Way / With You in My Life
This one's come though the dust, but there's no denying that guitar sound. "Go All the Way" is a remarkable song, combining a sort of 50's-style ballad arrangement with glam rock maximalism. Then there's the B-Side, a bouncy little music hall number about having lots of babies and love and stuff. Tubas are fun.
Helen Reddy - Crazy Love / Best Friend
The sound is OK, but this version of "Crazy Love" does not, in my opinion, rise to the level of the original. It's just a little too middle-of-the-road for me. Also, it has a pretty significant skipping problem in the middle. "Best Friend" is a cute song though, and I will allow it to make up some points on that account.
Helen Reddy - I Don't Know How to Love Him / I Believe in Music
All around, this is a pretty excellent pop arrangement of "I Don't Know How to Love Him." Considered out of the context of the musical, I guess it's an open question whether she's still singing about Jesus, or just some guy. "I Believe in Music" seems like the kind of song that a songwriter writes when they've been thinking a little too hard about writing a song, and they just start to write a song about songs. It happens to the best of them. I think this one's alright.
Helen Reddy - You're My World / Thank You
A concert showstopper if ever there was. This version is pretty sensational, but not in a way that distinguishes it from others I've heard of - I think it's mostly on the song. "Thank You" has a much more understated quality to it, with an almost delicate arrangement that is pretty compelling. Kind of funny how she put out all these covers with her own co-writes on the B-Sides. Somebody should have had more confidence in the original material.

Man charged with murder after fatal three-car crash
The only survivor of a fatal three-vehicle crash in Queensland has been charged with three counts of murder.
Rafferty Rolfe, 25, of Yandina, is accused of following and ramming a Nissan Navara, which spun before weaving through oncoming traffic on the Bruce Highway at Federal, south of Gympie, and into the path of an oncoming Great Wall utility on Friday.
Retiree Terry Bishop, 65, who was driving the Navara, and 25-year-old passenger Gypsy Satterley died in the crash.
Jessica Townley, 38, who was driving the utility, also died.
Police will allege Rolfe pursued Mr Bishop and Ms Satterley for about 4km before the collision.

An excuse to sell NFTs
Yesterday, while discussing Gianluca Vialli joining a bid for Chelsea:
Brother: If it was JT, he would try wearing a costume for each bid, except they would all say oi and try and sell NFTs.
Today, a story emerged that former Chelsea players John Terry and Claire Rafferty are part of a consortium looking to buy 10% of the club:
Brother: Called it. Me: The thing that's most interesting to me here is Rafferty's involvement, because she had a really serious finance career alongside her playing career, so if she's involved with this, she really checked it out. However, that Tory donor with the sexual harassment scandal is just huge red flags.
Later:
Me: I didn't read this part very closely earlier:
The plans, which have been seen by GOAL, suggest they will offer tokens to Kai Havertz for scoring his Champions League-winning goal and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta. It would effectively offer current players shares for their impact on the pitch.
Brother: His NFT failed so he wants to make the whole club an NFT. Me: Seriously, this idea gets worse by the minute.

Note
Chelsea legend John Terry and former women's football star Claire Rafferty are fronting up a £250 million ($329m) consortium called True Blue in an attempt to buy a 10 percent stake in the club.
idk how Rafferty got in on that but good for her! it's nice to see things moving along

The Murder of Victoria Stafford
Victoria Elizabeth Marie Stafford, known as Tori, was an 8-year-old Canadian girl. She lived with her parents in rural Ontario.
On eighth April 2009 at around 3:30 pm Victoria left her primary school to go home. She was captured on CCTV camera footage at 3:32 pm being let down an avenue by an unknown woman. When Victoria failed to return home she was reported missing by her grandma at 6:40 pm and the search began.
On 20th May 2009, policemen announced two arrests. Michael Thomas Christopher Stephen Rafferty, 28, was charged with 1st-degree murder and Terri-Lynne McClintic, 18, was charged with being an accessory to murder. Just over a week later McClintic's charge was upped to first-degree murder. McClintic testified that Rafferty had told her to abduct a 'young female.'
On 21st July 2009, police confirmed that Victoria's remains had been found near Mount Forest two days ago. The body had been naked from the waist down wearing only a Hannah Montana T-shirt and a pair of butterfly earrings. Victoria was known to have been wearing both of these items at the time of her disappearance. An autopsy revealed she had been raped, severely beaten and had suffered lacerations to her liver, the cause of death was repeated blows to the head.
McClintic pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Rafferty was found guilty by a jury and also sentenced to life.
