Best of 2024 TV Shows #22: The Walking Dead - The Ones Who Live (AMC)

While many thought that Rick’s exit from The Walking Dead by all counts should have ended the story we were pleasantly surprised that his story would have a continuation.

More so that Michonne would be joining him.

Now we pick things up with the miniseries that fills us on what Rick had been going through since being rescued from certain doom by Anne while being conscripted into service with the Civic Republic Military.

6 Years after losing him Michonne ends up finding Rick as he’s accepted his new life while secretly trying to alter the culture of the isolated CRM.

The couple while different from who they were previously, slowly begin to acclimate to each other once more, while forces including Anne and the general who kept Rick in line close in to keep them from returning to Alexandria.

For what was originally supposed to be a theatrical release and then a trilogy, it works a lot better in the familiar confines of AMC as we see the flashbacks and forwards Walking Dead has mastered for nearly 15 now.

While time away doesn’t keep Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira from the relationship goals they became known for on the show.

And unlike last years spinoffs this wisely keeps things contained making the reunion scene with Judith and RJ in the final moments all the more satisfying.

Rick made it home, he has his family now the true rebuild (other than waiting out the journeys of Daryl, Carol, Maggie and Negan) begins.

SUM 22: Rick and Michonne have their story together play out from reunion to return in this 6 part epilogue to Walking Dead as we know it.

NHL Captains & Alternates Primer/Refresher

All teams per the NHL Rule book (Rule 6, pg 7-8) must list either One (1) Captain and Two (2) Alternate Captains or Three (3) Alternate Captains during the game line-up submissions*. There may only be Three (3) Alternates if the Captain is not in uniform or if there is no designated Captain. No Coach, Manager or Goaltenders are allowed to act as a Captain or Alternate; Goaltenders are not allowed to act as captains due to (un)intentional delay of game as per the "Durnan Rule". They must wear either a "C" or "A" about three inches (3") high and of a contrasting color in a visible spot on the front of their jerseys. Only the Captain [ or any one (1) Alternate, if the Captain is not on the ice] is allowed, if invited by a referee, to discuss interpretations of the rules**. They may not leave the bench to protest or hinder any officials in light of a call on the ice, and are subject to being given a penalty (Abuse of Officials: unsportsmanlike conduct).

Notes:

(*) Some teams have named more than the regulation two (2) or three (3) alternates and are required to rotate the designation between players. The method of choosing who gets the designation when is left to team digression.

(**) Complaints about penalties are not considered 'a discussion pertaining to the interpretations of the rules', and any skater making such complaints are subject to a minor penalty in response.

“See, you have nothing to be worried about,” Vickie smiled as she nudged the newest young resident, “everyone loves you August!  You fit right in with the crew.”

“Thanks Mrs. McConky-“

“Vickie,” she corrected her, “it’s Vickie, sweetie.  Only people that have to call me Mrs. McConky are the people I don’t like.”

“Mrs. McConky,” a young nurse from the desk asked, walking up to the table.  Vickie shot the young doctor a wink and looked back to her, “your family came to visi-“

“Thanks Gretchen,” she smiled, giving her a smile.  She looked back to the young doctor, tapping her thigh, “come on, kiddo.  I want you to meet my family!”

“I-I wouldn’t want to impo-“

“Trust me you won’t,” she laughed, cutting her off.  She stood, grabbing her tray and started towards the trash can, “come on, sweetie.”

With a sigh, August grabbed her tray and began to follow after the nurse that had taken her under her wing.  The two of them dumped their trash and walked in a comfortable silence until they reached the entrance desk. 

August noticed two younger girls, who were probably in their early teens, as well as someone who looked a few years younger than herself, as well as two men.  One, who August had remembered being described as Vickie’s husband, was smiling brighter than his crisp white fire chief shirt when he noticed his wife. 

The other one made August hold her breath. 

Sure, he was definitely older than her, but he was cute.  Easily in his early 40’s, she wasn’t put off by the aura around him.  He gave off the ‘cool uncle vibes,’ but also a more hidden one.  One that made her want to bend over and call him daddy. 

“Auggie…”

She snapped out of her daydreams to see Vickie and her husband staring at her.

“O-oh, I’m sorry…I’m August!”

“Auggie…well, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Chief McConky smiled, holding out his hand.  August took it in her own to shake, “Vickie has sung your praises since the second you got into the hospital.”

“Oh-I-I’m nothing special, I-“

“Nonsense!” the large man smiled, waving her off, “Vickie here says you’re one of the few doctors that actually takes note of everyone…you don’t just go off on your own.  Listening to your co-workers is very important.  Right Eddie?”

“Huh?” he asked, shaken from his own thoughts, “yeah…whatever, Terry…”

“See, this dummy doesn’t pay attention to a word I say, and I’m his chief!” the man laughed. 

August watched as the two men began to bicker.  She was torn between laughing and breaking it up, but instead, chose to focus on Vickie.

“Anyways…these are my three daughters,” Vickie smiled, “Lucy, Kelsey, and Quinn.”

“I’ve heard so much about you guys!” she answered, “seriously, your mom talks about you guys all the time.”

“Yeah, mom’s mentioned you a lot too!” Lucy smiled, “sorry about Kelsey and Quinn…they’re super bummed they couldn’t go to the Tay Tay McVee concert tonight.”

“Right?” she sighed, her own shoulders dropping, “I was supposed to go with some friends, but they heard that Ring Ding Dong was going to be at Lava Fest, so they got tickets to that.  I really wanted to see her…but she’s sold out!”

“I have tickets!”

The girls looked over to Eddie, who had stopped his bickering with Terry. 

Eddie felt like his heart was racing. 

He didn’t know why he’d said that. 

“What?” Lucy asked, “You have tickets for a sold out show and didn’t tell us?”

“Y-yeah.  I totally have Tay Tay Macabee tickets.”

“It’s Tay Tay McVee Uncle Eddie!” Quinn said quickly.

“No way,” Kelsey argued, “they’ve been sold out for weeks!” 

“How did you manage to get tickets, Eddie?”

His eyes shot to his sisters.  She gave him a smug look as she crossed her arms over her chest. 

“I-I won them!” he lied, quickly trying to cover his tracks, “got wasted at a bar during their trivia night, and the prize was four Tay Tay tickets!”

“NO WAY!” Quinn yelled.

“Why didn’t you tell us, Uncle Eddie?” Lucy asked excitedly, “that’s awesome!”

“I didn’t know if you girls knew who she was,” Eddie lied, “I mean, I was at a bar.  I just assumed it wasn’t music you listened to!”

“Why didn’t you try to sell them?” Lucy asked, “scalpers are making bank getting their hands on tickets like that!”

“I don’t know,” he shrugged, “What’s with the twenty questions, huh?  Did you girls want to see Tay Tay Macabee or not?”

“Tay Tay McVee!” Quinn corrected once more.

“Yeah, whatever!” Eddie said quickly.

“I’m sure the girls would all love to go!” Vickie smiled as she put her arms over Lucy and Auggie’s shoulders, “right girls?  Could be a great way for you all to know each other.”

“I’m in!” Kelsey excitedly squealed.

“Me too!”

“Wanna go see Tay Tay McVee with us, Auggie?”

“Oh I’m so in!” she smiled, “Thanks uh-“

“Captain Penisi!” Eddie smiled, wanting to do more than just introduce himself to the girl, “Captain Eddie Penisi.”

“Thanks, Captain Penisi!”

“What do you mean?” Lucy asked angrily, “There is no way these tickets are fake!  My uncle won them at a trivia night!”

“Well sweetheart, you might want to go yell at the people that gave it to them, because these tickets are definitely fake!” The ticket taker proclaimed.  He was already looking past the girls, “Next!”

“No, this isn’t fair!” Kelsey proclaimed.

“We’re going in!” Quinn said, trying to push past the guy.

“SECURITY!”

“Quinn!” Auggie exclaimed, seeing the teenagers trying to push past the ticket taker, “Kelsey!”

“GUYS NO!” Lucy began, trying to grab at her sisters.

“WE WANNA SEE TAY TAY!”

“THEY PROMISED!”

“GUYS!”

“Well that was a shit show,” Auggie sighed as she ate yet another brownie with Lucy, “god…”

“You’re telling me,” she laughed as she bit down on her own confection, “I didn’t know my little sisters were that strong.”

“Fucking wild!” Auggie giggled.

“Wanna know what’s wild?” She asked, “how the hell did we get up here?”

August looked around.  They were on top of a roof, staring at the sky.  She giggled, “I don’t remember getting up here!”

“Me either…”

“Did it happen after we dropped off Kelsey and Quinn?” August asked. 

Lucy giggled, shrugging her shoulders, “I don’t know…but I do recognize where we are!  We’re on top of my dad and Uncle’s station!”

“What?” August giggled, “no way!  Why would we come here after we got high?”

“I don’t know,” Lucy shrugged, laying back down to look at the stars, “I mean-I’ve always loved this place.  Gamps was the chief here.  Now my dad…and my uncle is the fire captain.  I guess I’ve always wanted to be at station 24.”

“Lucy…you should be a firefighter!”

“What?” she asked, sitting back up.

“Lucy, you should apply to be a firefighter so that you can be one here!” August smiled at her friend, “I mean…it’s what you’ve always wanted, right?”

“Yeah!” she agreed, “it is…I want to be a firefighter…”

“You should do it, Lucy!”

“YEAH!  I’m going to apply tomorrow morning!” she grinned.  She reached over and pulled August to herself, “thanks Auggie!”

Movie reviews!

House of 1000 Corpses - 100% Rob Zombie's baby through and through for creative range in cinema, but it just wasn't fully perfected yet in my opinion which you can almost feel the movie dragging through in the end for me personally (that and a limited budget), but still totally bonkers with some truly great scenes (particularly the scene where captain spaulding gives them a tour of albert fish, Doctor Satan, etc.) and shows one of my favorite loving psycho clowns Captain Spaulding and definitely worth watching with a group of friends for some scares (and also fun fact for a while and still now maybe I believe, they have some House of 1000 Corpses setups for Halloween that you could visit for scares as well), 7/10 movie for me overall, good, but not great in my opinion (bumped it up 1 point especially due to how creative the characters/settings were in this).

Devil's Rejects - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie ..Did I also mention I love this movie? This in my opinion is really a perfect example of Rob Zombies creativity (although some of his scenes seem eeriely similar to movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre like they did in House of 1000 Corpses sprinkled a little bit throughout), ultimately this movie really blew me back in terms of writing, acting, and pace with dialogue/action and just an overall great and entertaining/exciting movie and I rewatch this movie a lot and highly recommend it (3 from hell is garbage though I'm sorry, and I also have Devil's Rejects on DVD because why not), overall solid 8/10 movie for me subjectively (and 10/10 with 100% bias lol).

Texas Chainsaw - Speaking of Texas Chainsaw..this movie is the epitome of great cinematography that makes you feel as if you are there even decades and decades later, watching with a terrifying setting and great writing that depicts a feeling of utter terror with an entertaining twist, ultimately fulfilling, what you would want out of an edgy horror flick for it's time (1978 I believe), 10/10 movie subjectively for me.

Texas Chainsaw 2 - Good actors, setting was definitely kind of cool, overall not my cup of tea personally but I can see how some people would like it. I would subjectively give this movie a 6.5 out of 10, not great, not bad either.

Nightmare On Elm Street - Totally creative out of the box character with a sense of psycho charm and a set of great actors, when I first watched this I loved it and really truly enjoyed this movie and would recommend this for anyone wanting to watch their first horror movie as a teen, overall 9/10 film (can't think of any flaws but that's what I would rate it).

Freddy VS Jason - I don't have to say anything other than the fact that the final battle is beyond epic and I would rate this an 8.5/10 (just a badass movie when I watched it from what I can remember).

The Stepfather - Solid movie about your everyday psychopath (particularly Terry O' Quinn) with good casting, setting and writing. Overall 7/10, not too shabby and a fun and crazy watch, I believe The Stepfather was much better off without sequels and as a stand alone classic horror-esque thriller movie.

The Stepfather 2 - Although the casting was excellent (particularly Terry O' Quinn and Meg Foster), the writing felt rushed and jumbled, although some of the action scenes with the ending wedding scene and the stepfather driving around like crazy in the junkyard I believe left some excitement and fun, it fell short with corny lines such as "daddy's home!" and obvious kills that go against the original character's intellect and cunning abilities, so overall a 6/10 with great actors but a horrible and dense plot line.

The Stepfather 3 - In my opinion a horrible movie all around (although the sequels are still better than The Stepfather remakes in my opinion), the acting is almost hard to believe how bad it is, while the writing was actually decent in my opinion, overall I believe if they had better actors in this (like getting Terry O' Quinn if he was available or another talented actor) it may have worked, but alas, I find this movie to be around a 4.5/10, almost watchable but not really if you pay attention to the acting (and the ridiculous scene where the man falls and hurts himself...from a childs wheelchair that barely hits him), I digress.

Terrifier - I was actually disappointed in this movie (although Terrifier 2 left me shook and also even more disappointed not even watching Terrifier 3), I loved the throwback theme the movie portrayed with the beginning especially and the clown was scary as well as entertaining for me, but where it fell short was in execution/ending, I personally believe the girl that looks like the character in Scream (the main girl with the black hair) I believe if the movie at least kept that girl as well as her sister in the background possibly (the black haired girl's friend dies, but she wasn't much of a main character anyway although she was entertaining), but I truly believe if they kept the main girl and possibly her sister (although the disfigurement was gnarly and part of the gore), I honestly feel like if they kept those girls in the background for a sequel to get revenge or some sort of plot line where they try to figure out/stop the clown it would have been very interesting to watch, but alas, 7/10 but wouldn't probably watch again but who knows.

Lastly I have:

The New Daughter - Tempted to rate this a 0/10 but instead I will rate it a 6/10 to where it had solid potential to be a decent movie with some of the cast and the beginning of the movie/story, but the ending was so horribly memorable, I will forever curse Kevin Costner for even thinking this was a good idea lol (but that's just my opinion).

Besides the movies I have listed I also have some hidden gems such as: Halloween (1978), Stalked By My Doctor, The Deliberate Stranger, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (although it's technically not a horror movie it is terrifying at how it is a true story and how easily we can be deceived and hurt), and lastly I would also add Halloween 2 and H20 for kicks as well as parts 1 and 2 of Friday The 13th.
