Basically the great sects had isolated themselves for sometime and WRH still tried to burn CR but the Lan won that war , alone i think, and like they demanded a war prize/hostage/concubine? and YMJ with the other twos support , i think, sent WWX for the Lan's leader LWJ who was surprised by WWX's very feminine and very much marriage robes. So the Jiang and the Jin and the Nie got it wrong but LWJ lets him stay, I think it's been a while and they fall in love for real and LWJ reveals that his brother has been in a coma for some time. Anyway WX went to the Crowd hunt the Jin are trowing and YZY got very angry at like WWX being at her level socially, the spouse of a sect leader and then WX went home and LXC woke up and that's all i know because the fic had like 26/28/20 something chapters in total and it was a WIP and only one or two chpaters left till it was done. I'm always here for a fun villain (duh), but I'm not thirsting over him the way other people are because I'm a LOYAL, MONOGAMOUS FANGIRL and Terry will likely always have my heart. That said, I hope he's another bad guy we love to hate hate to love just love to watch!

Okay, so Terry is definitely my favourite TIG character because he's the most fleshed out and complex, but after that, it's gotta be Cash for precisely the opposite reason - we know so little about him, the movie itself is garbage and its lore is practically non-existent, giving me a lot of room to daydream/make things up about him. Plus I mean, have you SEEN him in this godforsaken movie? This man is an absolute whore and I am helpless to resist.

Silver fox TIG is my favourite TIG.

Found some excellent horror-related and horror-adjacent books to read this month! Not a common genre for me, so this was fun. Really can't recommend Grady Hendrix as an author enough, Horrorstör was definitely my favourite novel from this month

I hate saying it because I love the Discworld and Terry Pratchett is easily my favourite author, but man Eric did not do it for me. You could see some good bones in it, but as far as I’m concerned all the interesting bits that appeared were done significantly better in later books. It had some humour moments, but the only bits that I really enjoyed were when the Luggage was around.

This story followed a young, teenaged, would-be demon summoner who, instead of summoning a demon, accidentally winds up with the incompetent and fearful wizzard Rincewind. Obligated to answer this kid’s wishes, they end up bouncing through time and space while attempting to survive what each wish had to throw at them. 

Fantastic Mr Fox / Esio Trot / George’s Marvellous Medicine / The Enormous Crocodile

I went on a Dahl kick this month, I wanted to work through some of his shorter works that I’ve never bothered to read before. All of them were honestly delightful, I had a blast. Esio Trot was probably the weakest of the lot, but the other three were so much fun. The Fantastic Mr Fox may be my favourite just by virtue of being the most fleshed out, but listening to The Enormous Crocodile be read by Stephen Fry is an unparalleled experience.

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy

A story I enjoyed more than I expected. I have a strange soft spot for hockey narratives, but that might just be the Canadian in me. Alix’s one true love is hockey, it’s the one place she feels competent and happy, but her team captain is making the space increasingly hostile until, unable to take the bullying, she strikes out and punches her captain. Shocked by her own violence and given an ultimatum by the coach to get her temper under control, she ends up going to popular and poised Ezra, hoping that he could show her how to deal with harassment without losing her cool in a way that scares her.

Horrorstör

Easily the best book I read this month, this book was amazing, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a “haunted house but in a knock-off Ikea” and I mostly picked it up as a joke because the premise sounded hilarious. But I was familiar with the author (I’d read The Southern Book Club’s Guide To Slaying Vampires a couple years ago) and trusted him to do something interesting with the premise. And wow. Just wow. It is very much a classic, grisly, nauseating horror premise, but in a way that explores capitalism, exploitation, and treatment of prisoners and the mentally ill. It’s been  a long time since I read a book that actually gave me chills, but I had to put this book down and walk away from it occasionally, it was intense enough.

The Kaiju Preservation Society

As a Pacific Rim lover, this book was everything I’d ever wish for it to be. It’s such a love letter to the kaiju genre as well as environmental conservation, and it’s speculative biology is fascinating!

After being fire from his job at the beginning of the Covid pandemic lockdown in New York City, Jamie Gray is barely making ends meet by acting as a delivery driver. He doesn’t know how he can possibly continue on like this, until he runs into an old friend who offers him a strange and intensely secretive job offer. With nothing to lose, Jamie agrees and finds himself on an alternate Earth, helping to study creatures that he only knows from campy monster movies, now very much real.

The Last Wish

Felt an urge to reread a Witcher book, so I’ve been picking my way through the short stories. They continue to be a lot of fun, and it felt good to reconnect with the original narrative voice again after reading a lot of fanfiction over the years. For anyone who has someone existed post-Netflix version without picking up the general premise: Geralt of Rivia is a "witcher", a person who was specifically trained to wield weapons and magics to hunt dangerous monsters that threaten humans. This is a collection of short stories that show Geralt on some of the various hunts he's had during the decades of his over-long life. (It's significantly better than the Netflix version, very much worth the read if you like classic high fantasy and/or fairy tale retellings.)

Mortimer: Rat Race to Space

A very dull youth novel. Mortimer is a lab rat at Houston who has aspirations to go on the space program and prove that rats are better suited for colonizing Mars than humans. If you’re a seven year old who wants to consume space facts, this is the book for you. For everyone else, it’s a bit of a slog.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism

Another Grady Hendrix book. This book was undeniably well-written, just as masterful as his others, but I didn’t enjoy it as much. A bit too much high school narrative and not enough all out horror. The conclusion was pretty decent, but the rest was… fine. A fun love letter to the 1980s though as you learn about two best friends and how they grow up together. ...A bit of a debate whether or not it warrants a queer marker or not, I'm not even going to make that attempt.

The One and Only Ruby

The newest book from the One and Only Ivan series. Much like The One and Only Bob this book was… fine. The original of the series was really wonderful and felt quite inspired, inspired by the real life story of a gorilla that’s kept in a small cage in a mall complex. The next two books take place after that one and each follows one of Ivan’s friends (Bob the dog and Ruby the baby elephant). A fun enough addition to the series, the art is still cute, and it has decent things to say about the hunting of endangered animals, but it was nothing amazing. 

Paperbacks from Hell

Look, I really just felt the desperate need to read a bunch of Hendrix novels after being so violently consumed by Horrorstör. This is a nonfiction book in which Hendrix dives into the evolution and popular tropes of horror novels throughout the 1980s, with the cover art being the driving thesis throughout. You can tell how much he loves these weird, pulpy horrors and it makes you want to go and find a bunch of these and read them yourself. It really is an interesting book, even if you aren’t a great horror lover (which I wouldn’t consider myself).

The Salt Grows Heavy

Now this is a fucking novella. An absolutely unhinged, body-horror rich retelling of both The Little Mermaid and Frankenstein. Yeah. After the complete destruction of her husband’s kingdom at the hands (and jaws) of her own children, the Mermaid finds herself travelling with a mysterious Plague Doctor. I won’t go further into this except to say that the way it portrays morality, life, death, and the mutability of flesh is just… something else. Would recommend. But not if you have a weak stomach.

Scott Pilgrim

A classic. I watched the new animated series with my brother and felt the need to go back and reread the entire original series. Absolutely perfect, no notes, continues to be one of my all time favourite graphic novel series. The magical realism is just *chef’s kiss*.

ooooh, heck yeah!! let’s start with “to walk the gale” – this is a long fic that ive hinted at before, because it’s my ‘fox as krell’s commander’ fic!! fox, my beloved… you deserve the world! and by that i mean i must break you.

in this fic, fox is assigned as general krell’s commander and basically goes from “okay, i can make this work” to “This Will Work (loads blaster)” in the first three months lol. this one has a heck of a lot of whump, given the subject matter, but it will be counteracted by the comfort that is to come :’)

this fic is set to be ten chapters long!! here’s a quick snippet! :)

“I think he’s trying to kill us,” Parasite says grimly.

Fox grunts, pressing a hand against the wound on his side. “He’s a natborn. What else is new?”

Parasite swallows, looks away. He drags out the medkit, begins sorting through their meager supplies. There’s a hint of frustration in his eyes, and Fox doesn’t blame him. Parasite wasn’t trained in more than basic CPR, just like the rest of the basic troopers, but he’s kind and giving and has a warm bedside manner, so with all the medics… gone, he’s the best they’ve got.

But it’s not fair. And Parasite is right to be angry.

NOW!! “and the universe said” is far more au than most of my wips, as it takes place in a different reality entirely. well… kinda.

have you ever played the game Spiritfarer? boom. there it is. (if you haven’t, i seriously recommend it!!) but to go into a bit more detail; in this au, fox acts as a guide for lost souls who need to pass on to the afterlife. they are all the spirits of people that he once knew when they were alive, and they all have something different to teach him. as fox slowly walks them through the path to acceptance and moving on, he learns a bit more about himself too. :)

obviously, this is a story that deals heavily with death & grief, but much like the game that inspired it, my hope is that this story will bring more comfort than hurt <3

Fox opens his eyes slowly. Above him, the ceiling is swaying in time with the waves, his hammock rocking gently back and forth.

On his nightstand, the Guiding Light is glowing softly, an ever-present warmth that draws him in like a flower reaching for the sun, and he carefully picks it up, cradling it between his hands.

“Good morning,” he murmurs, and presses his forehead to the Light for a brief moment, before pulling away.

He can hear the sound of footsteps out on the deck. Seems like one of his passengers is awake already.

“Time to report for duty,” Fox mutters to himself, a lopsided grin tugging at his lips. He throws his legs and over the side of the hammock and jumps down.

With the Guiding Light strapped to his belt, Fox prepares for another day.

Terry Fox Day

On  August 1, honor a great man, a great foundation, and a great cause by celebrating Terry Fox Day. After discovering a malignant tumor on his knee and undergoing surgery that removed 15 centimeters of his leg, Terry Fox embarked on a cross-Canada run that lasted 143 days and 5,373  kilometers — all to raise money and awareness for cancer. Every  year, the Terry Fox Foundation holds 9,000 Terry Fox Runs. While the main run, the Terry Fox Run, is held on the same day as Terry Fox Day,  the Foundation also partners with many schools to host a Terry Fox  School Run. For all of these runs, 82 cents of every dollar raise is  donated directly to many different types of cancer research, such as such as lung, ovarian, pancreatic, pediatric cancer and many more.

After  being diagnosed with cancer and having his leg amputated, Terry Fox still managed to run 5,373 kilometers. This story and the legacy he left behind inspires anyone who participates in a Terry Fox Foundation event.

Because  of the legacy Terry has left behind, he continues to give hope to those who are battling cancer. Thanks to The Terry Fox Foundation, over $715 million has been raised to support cancer research. There has also been the creation of The Terry Fox Research Institute, an institute that merges the clinical expertise of cancer physicians with the innovative laboratory expertise of scientific researchers. All of these are steps  towards finding a cure for cancer.

Coming live to you all from finals season! It hasn’t actually been that bad thus far, just very long and tedious on account of the fact that I’m an art major. The pro is that most of my finals will be done before actual finals week meaning that I get to rest while my STEM friends suffer! The con is that I’m ALSO a science major so I’ll have to suffer a little with them. The third, more sinister (positive) thing is that my only science class this semester is human bio and I learned half that stuff last year anyways so I won’t actually be struggling LMAO. Anyways. My comic. 

Got another very big burst of motivation this week because of my 3D class actually! I’ve been coming to the realization that I spend so much time meticulously planning things that it scares me out of just. Going and getting them done. The solution? Just jump right into it without worrying about it! So, instead of trying to power through the script before letting myself draw anything (which is the main thing I really want to get to right now), I’ve started thumbnailing the first scene since it’s the most solid part of the story so far and least subject to major changes! I recently edited it to fix up Lyssa’s conversation with Terry and cut out a couple characters who I didn’t think were necessary to the story, so it should be pretty smooth sailing to actually make those pages. It’s a much more exciting thing to work on in addition to working out some of the later plot threads- and it gives me a better idea of how long the comic will be in total. I was hoping to keep this one under 100 pages and it’s looking bleak given that the first scene is 25 pages (I AM TRYING TO CUT IT DOWN AND YET IT STILL LOOKS BLEAK) (I might just be underestimating how much I can fit on one page so we'll see) thumbnails

There are MANY other projects happening this week. I have finals for 3 of my classes! All of them are art classes! My 2D final is a puppet about rabies so that feels pertinent to this comic! I also did some secret santa work (hi CAPE crew)(also applied to the dndads winter exchange just for funsies) and finished a hat, and somehow managed to get the wrong knitting needles three times and then send the right set of knitting needles to my house instead of my college address so the future of this sweater is a little in the balance but I’m also gods specialest little boy and capable of anything I put my mind to and also JUST realized that I can make incredibly strong instant coffee in the microwave in my dorm instead of having to go out and spend money on it which is financially saving me but forever dooming my body. I did that at 7pm. mistake .I think Im’ doing other stuff but its 3am and i cannot for the life of me remember.

Expend4bles cause carnage in the latest, Red-Band Trailer!

Get ready for the new Expend4bles Trailer! The idea behind The Expendable is quite easy: put all of the biggest actors from the 80s era into one movie, have them blow a ton of stuff up, and the result will be a nostalgic action-packed hit at the box office. The trilogy was a huge financial success overall. At the helm of the story is Sylvester Stallone, as he takes on the character of Barney Ross, a mercenary equipped with one of the best teams in the world thanks to Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), and well, the list goes on and on and on! Today is my birthday. And for this year, here is something I've been thinking about for quite a long time: A good bunch of my favorite male characters - including those I recently knew or I like but not enough as to fanart, but taking away everyone I've abandoned or just felt like they shouldn't be here - all gathered up in a boxing ring, the majority wounded and weary, but some a bit dirty and confused. Since matching patronuses means two people are soulmates, what do you have to say about Ron’s dog and Hermione’s otter? How do they pair up?

I have a couple of things to clarify before answering this question directly, I hope you don't mind.

That matching patronuses (why can't we make the plural following Latin? Patroni sounds so much better) mean soulmates is a statement to take very carefully. We do not know if in the Wizarding World people think that having matching patronuses means being soulmates. It is, though, symbolic for the reader. It's a subtle but important difference.

Imagine a movie where a character is color-coded. For example, we have a very calm character and so the director decides to color code them with blue. The character is not aware that their association with blue is due to their personality, just as much as the other characters aren't, but it is significant for who is watching the movie.

Another thing to say is that, despite how much the word soulmates is thrown around in mainstream media, it is actually a precise dynamic and while symbolism can be an instrument of the author to let everybody know that two characters are soulmates, it has to rely upon, before anything else, how the relationship between the two characters is built. With this in mind, Ron and Hermione are not soulmates. Mine isn't an opinion on how compatible they are but just a technical observation of how they are written. [I wish I had finished writing my analysis on Harry and Ginny's soulmates dynamic so the differences could be clearer. But this and the section where I explain the differences between hinny and romione here, and this post, could give you a good idea of what I'm talking about. Maybe this, too.]

Ok, now that we have established this we can go back to the patronuses.

I know that a lot of people during the years have said that Ron and Hermione's ones are significant because terriers chase otters. But I am afraid it was a pure coincidence this connection. Terries do chase otters, it's true, but they also chase a lot of other things in which casually the otters are included. If you look at Rowling's statements about their patronuses, Hermione's one is an otter because it is Rowling's favorite animal, and Ron's is a Jack Russell because at the time that was her dog, even if I have to say, I find Ron having a dog patronus quite fitting with his personality.

If you look at the page about patronuses on the "Wizarding World" site, there's nothing about their patronuses' connection. Instead, it is for example pointed out how Harry at the start thought his patronus was a horse and then it turns out to be Ginny's one [if you are interested in this read this]. Now, I'm not saying that we should use what's written or not on that site as an argumentation but it shows that there was no particular thinking behind Ron and Hermione's patronuses.

But let's pretend that we don't know any of this, that we only know what their patronuses are, and that we assume they mean something.

Ron and the Jack Russell

The Jack Russell before anything else is a dog. Dogs, having been the best buddies of humans since the dawn of time, have a strong symbolism in our traditions (at least the European ones). Dogs are symbols of faithfulness, loyalty, companionship, and honesty. Considering that Ron's main role in the story is being the best mate, the loyal companion, of the main character, its literary meaning is quite fitting.

Now, let's get a look at Jack Russells specifically:

Jack Russell Terriers were baying Terriers, meaning their job was to flush out foxes that had gone to ground, the Jack Russell’s job was not to kill the fox, but to keep him at bay with steady barking while the hunter secured the catch.

This once again highlights Ron's role in the story. He helps the hunter (Harry) until the last step, but it's the hunter who makes the final killing.

[...] their hunting history means they react and chase pretty much any moving small animal. [...] Rabbits, Foxes, Rats, Squirrels, Otters you name it. If it’s moving in a fast forward direction, the Jack Russell will chase it. -> source

As previously stated, yes they can chase otters but they are far from the only thing they chase.

I guess that if we want to find a way for all of this to make sense we could say that Hermione is one of the things that Ron chases through the story along with popularity, success, and on some level wealth.

Hermione and the otter

Because otters are pretty much an irrelevant animal in my country, I had to do a bit of research.

Otter symbolism and meanings include playfulness, laughter, and mischievousness, as well as creativity, transformation, and psychic abilities. Because otters can be found in coastal areas and riverways on every continent, except Antarctica and Australia, they are the subject of mythology and folklore in many cultures. -> source

Honestly, if we didn't know that Rowling chose Hermione's patronus simply because it is her favorite animal, one could easily assume that she was smoking some very heavy stuff when she was making this choice. Otters apparently are symbolic of the exact opposite of who Hermione is. I'm sure she would be thrilled to be associeted with psychic abilities...

If we want to work to make this make sense, I guess we could say that these are the elements Hermione, her soul, craves and that she finds in Ron. Ron is playful, his chess skills display creativity, he is a character with a great emotional arc (transformation) and we could even fit the psychic abilities. Ron while joking is able to predict more than once what it's going to happen in the story.

Otters are also apparently at risk of extinction:

Of the 13 species of otter, IUCN lists five as endangered, five as near-threatened, and two as vulnerable. -> source

Do we want to stretch it? Let's stretch it. This could be a connection with her status as a muggle-born and the people who wish for their genocide.

Sea otters, particularly mothers and pups, sometimes hold hands while floating on their backs. Hand-holding keeps the otters from drifting away from each other and their food source while they sleep. -> source

This I'm sure reminds everyone of that scene in DH where she fell asleep holding Ron's hand.

Mothers spend up to 14 hours per day foraging to support a pup's intense nutrition needs. [...] They provide full-time care for their babies for six to eight months, until the babies can survive independently. -> source

While Hermione is not particularly family-oriented she does have a strong maternal attitude towards Harry and in some ways Ginny too. Aside from Ron, they are her two closest friends.

Otters sometimes take up residence in abandoned beaver lodges or muskrat dens. Some even move in while beavers are still present. -> source

Hermione does spend more time at the Burrow than with her own family... Ok, now I'm just having fun learning stuff about otters so I think we can end it here.

The terrier and the otter

In conclusion, I suppose we can say that Ron found in Hermione what he was hunting for: someone that saw him as their first choice. And Hermione found in Ron what she craved: laughter, joy, relaxation.

They might not look like a perfect match to the superficial eye but they make much more sense than one could think.

Damn, now I want to write a fairy tale where a Jack Russell and an otter become childhood best friends who learn from each other how to be better people and co-exist (the story ends with them finding an abandoned fawn and they end up co-parenting him).

Edit: It was pointed out to me how otters are part of the weasel family and that could be taken as a reference to the surname "Weasley" and her future role in that family.

Got any book recs?

Hmmm…. I’ve been tearing through Terry Pratchett’s Discworld lately, and I’d highly recommend it. It’s a really fun fantasy series that jumps around between various characters. I started with the story arc that follows the city watch, so if you’d like to follow in my footsteps read the book “Guards! Guards!” first. If not, “Mort” or “Going Postal” are two other great books to start with. I just loaned my mom my copy of Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”, which I love just for the narrative format alone. Or if you’re in the mood for mystery, my friend and I read Stuart Turton’s “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” last October and thought it was great.

If you want some nonfiction, my recommendations are predictably nature-focused, but I’m reading Catherine Raven’s “Fox & I”, and I’ve liked it so far. I also think everyone should read Aldo Leopald’s “Sand County Almanac” at least once. Outside of nature-based books I’d also highly recommend the book “My Beloved Man”, which is a collection of letters between composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears. They’re really sweet, and very interesting to read.

If you’d like poetry, I’d recommend some CP Cavafy or Wisława Szymborska. They both have a tone and pacing I really enjoy, although you’ll need translations for either. Or Frost is always amazing, obviously. Hope that helps!

Some days are much harder than others.

I remember what I have been through. And what challenges its left me with. And how much it sucks.

But then I remeber how I survived cancer. How there were moments close to death.

And the survivor's guilt sets in.

I don't know why I'm here today, or why a disease that took so many of my friends let me live.

I want to live everyday remembering my good friends, what their laughs sounded like, how strong they were until the very last moments. Strength I will never know.

Its hard to explain if you haven't been alongside the kids getting that chemo yourself. Knowing what it feels like and still seeing that they smile through it. That they play, and they hold their moms or dads hand as they walk the halls of a children's hospital because they can't leave its safe walls to the outside world.

I know its hard to see it as an outsider. But my heart aches when I think about how their lives have been changed forever. They don't know how strong they really were when they wiped tears off their parents face and said 'don't cry mommy/daddy/parent, I'm going to be okay.' and don't even shed a tear. They just go back to playing.

I forget sometimes what it felt like. The mental game it played. When you think you are going to die. During treatment you think about how life might look like if you dont make it. Because you really dont know if you will make it. You start to pick up on things you never used to. And cherish moments that normally would pass you by given different circumstances.

And when the thought of dying is gone. And the chemo is over. And the check ups are months apart. You forget about those little moments you enjoyed and lived because the danger is gone.

These moments get stirred up everytime I hear about a friend who relapsed. Or a friend of a friend who earned their wings. And it hurts. Because its so hard for people to actually know how it feels. Sure you will mourn the loss. You will be sad for a while. But as a survivor you feel so horrible that they didn't make it. It weighs over you and you would give anything to fix it. Children, kids, Young human beings who didn't even get the chance to see 1st grade, or play in a sandbox, or do their first terry fox run at school. Or ride a bike. Have their first field trip. Go swimming in a public pool. The list is so long.

Or teenagers who didn't get to go to their first school dance. Their first kiss, first speech in middle/high school. Who didn't get to try home economics. Who will never make it to their gradation, or prom, or get their license.

This journey haunts me. And when things feel normal I am vividly reminded that it will never be over. And that everyday another child is diagnosed with cancer. And I wonder if the scales will tip in their favor. I wish there was a cure. I wish there was some simple way to just eradicate cancer entirely. So no child ever has to go through it all as I have. Or as many before me or after me have.

I hope I walk a path that my cancer angels are proud of. And that I can honor them to the fullest of their souls and smiles.

You deserve so much better my angels. I love you ❤ Your memory lives on, and as I walk on this earth your stories will not be silenced. And your strength will never be forgotten.
