Way back when it aired I watched True Blood, but I never finished it. And for some reason people around me and online started talking about it again, so when it was recommended on Netflix I decided to start from the beginning :3
This show is something that I can't take seriously at all and regularly kicks me in the feels, because somehow they get me to care very much about some (not all) of the characters. Like Terry and Lafayette 💖
Oops I wanted to write some thoughts in the tags, but it became a tag wall so I might as well just put it below the cut:
Actually I actively dislike most of them 90% of the time lol, but in like an entertaining way? So yeah very mixed feelings about this show bc 1) fuck them for the way they treated Tara. I was yelling ''leave her ALONE'' at my screen by - idk episode 2? Like I really don't care that Sookie found herself in bad situations all the time, because she plunged right into a lot of them all by herself. But Tara just kept getting dragged along by rip currents that she was trying so hard to get away from.
Also 2) I hate hate hate hate Hoyt and I despise that I'm supposed to sympathise with him and that in the end Jessica takes all the blame for what happened between them? That asshole couldn't accept that sometimes people fall out of love with their romantic partner and said the most HORRIBLE things to and about Jess because she was honest about her feelings. Like in the last season he comes back and she's like ''I was young and foolish and not ready.'' As if that justifies how he reacted to her?? He's just one of those ''''''''nice guys'''''''' Like, he doesn't remember so he doesn't have to apologise?? Ugghh Jessica at Jason were like "ahh I'm so comfortable with you, and you always know what I need - we must be really good friends :))))" and then marries the guy who's treated both his girlfriends like shit. WHAT the hell.
(There's more but these two are my main annoyances the day after finishing it and I'm gonna shut up about that now.)
Terry on the other hand was an actual good guy and I love him to bits. Lafayette is not a good guy, but mostly because of his shady businesses I love him to bits as well. I'm sad they didn't have more one-on-one scenes together, because the way they helped each other with their respective trauma was lovely.
It's not a good show, but it's a fun show and it has good touching moments..

Fuck it. True Blood OC time
This is gonna be a long one, I'll do you all a favor and make it easier to scroll
Context: these are fankids I've had loosely in my head for a solid fifteen years. Yes, I watched True Blood way too young, whatever, it's done. I've tried three separate times to put the lore down into fanfic, at different points in my life, and have only had partial success.
"A New Kind of Monster" is my latest iteration, and I consider it the true backstory (though there are parts I'm not happy with). I may or may not continue with it. Frankly I've been kind of nervous due to some residual anxiety around being "cringe" when writing about my longtime OCs.
I'll link the fanfic if anyone is interested, but fuck it, lore dump!!!
First, Melody Thornton (my dumbass forgot the N)
[Text Reads:
Tara Thorton (she/they)
• Tara and Eggs daughter
• Psychic
• Bi + demi
• Autistic + shy
Special int:
- Vocaloid
- Danny Phantom
- Undertale
- Global Funerary Rites
• Close w/Lafayette & dad
• Best friends w/Mikey & Damien
• Ghost BF when??
End text]
Melody is the youngest of the three, and is the fandom obsessed nerd of the group with a love for technology. She got her love of music from her dad, who played his guitar for her since she was a baby, and some killer hair-styling skills from her mom. They got closer with their uncle Lafayette after developing psychic powers around puberty. He's also the one who helped them accept their sexuality.
Tara and Melody have a somewhat cordial, awkward relationship. Tara dreads the thought of becoming her mama, and is further afraid of her own anger issues, so she subconsciously keeps distant. This is another reason why Mel is so close to Eggs. Not that the two of them have a perfect relationship either. She can tell her father has a lot of regrets, a lot of darkness he tries to keep to himself, even as she matures into a young adult. It hurts her because sometimes she catches glimpses of his (quite literal) haunted past. But he refuses to make a therapist of her.
Due to being surrounded by ghosts and vampires, they are understandably morbid, and have a fascination with the way different cultures attend to their dead. They're writing a thesis on the mortuary traditions of slaves, and how the funeral industry gave the Black community an early avenue for self-sufficiency. This isn't for any school assignment. She just likes analyzing these things.
Being able to see and speak to spirits also makes Mel an empathetic, thoughtful person. Like one of her idols, Lydia Deetz, she prefers the dead to the living, with the exception of Mikey and Damien, who themselves are connected to death.
Speaking of:
Mikey
[Text Reads:
Mikey Bellefleur (he/him)
• Rene & Arlene's son
• Depressed artist
• Gay panic over crush on Damien
• Knows every FoB and P!ATD song
• Love stepdad Terry, distant from mom
End text]
Mikey is the only OC who technically exists in the show, but he's only a baby, so he's not much of a character. I took the liberty of speculating on who he becomes: an emo. I mean, if you found out your biological dad was a serial killer and your mom tried to abort you with a Wiccan potion because she thought you were evil, wouldn't you be a little in your feelings about it?
He's the oldest, technically, but he looks younger than he actually is. Growing up, he always idolized his father, Terry. He still does, in a lot of ways. He appreciates that Terry isn't afraid to be emotional and cry, that he never treated him as anything less than his son, and that he's a wonderful husband to Arlene. It gave him a healthy sense of masculinity, and a strong dislike of the military due to witnessing Terry's PTSD episodes. Sometimes, Mikey feels inadequate because he's more prone to anger, and often has dark intrusive thoughts that sicken him.
This sense of inadequacy was exacerbated by his mother's obvious wariness of him. Arlene was never good at hiding how she felt, though she tried, especially when he was young. But his teen years brought out the aforementioned emotional problems, and it frankly scared the shit out of her. It came out in a heated argument that his real father was Rene, and it shattered Mikey's world. The revelation seemed to confirm every bad thought he ever had about himself. There WAS something wrong with him. Not only was he the son of a serial killer, but of a vampire-hating serial killer. With one of his best friends being the only half-vampire in existence, he was suddenly wracked with fear of becoming his father's son.
Mikey's only constant comfort is his art. He draws comics, but taught himself to make animatics on YouTube with the help of tech-savvy Mel. He's got a small following, and since his animatics usually depict his struggles, he attracts other troubled kids, which makes him feel like his life is worth something.
He's been in love with Damien forever, but once they transitioned and started presenting more masc/androgynous, looking like a younger Eric in fact, it's been a source of inner turmoil.
Now, finally:
Damien
[Text reads:
Damien Northman (any pro.)
• Child of Sookie and Eric
• Complex relationship w/parents, own humanity, gender, mortality, Norse God Loki, etc.
• Memes to cope w/the horrors
• Loves Lilo & Stitch, Reanimator, The Omen
• Did own top surgery
End text]
Born as Harper Stackhouse, Damien wasn't aware of who her father was for the first several years of her life, though she always viewed Eric as her dad because he was very present in her childhood. So, the reveal wasn't a huge surprise to anyone but Sookie.
Damien's backstory is explained in my fanfic, but long story short, blah-blah genetic experiment blah (to borrow Pam's phrasing). There was new in-vitro tech that allowed for vampire and human couples to have children, and a newly engaged Bill convinces Sookie to give it a try with him so they can have a normal family life. After several failed trials, their doctor suggests an anonymous older donor, because older vampires had shown more successful implantation due to their strength. The couple agrees, and surprise! Sookie ends up pregnant just as she learns Bill had been sent to her by the queen. After the breakup, and the death of Sophie-Anne, Bill takes over as King, and sends Eric as a bodyguard for Sookie during her pregnancy. Eric didn't know it was his baby until he held Damien and felt the connection between maker and prodigy, while Sookie didn't realize until Damien grew into her father's features. It caused a huge fight that scarred Damien.
Okay, backstory out of the way, Damien grows up feeling much the same as their mom; as an outcast, though he found solace in their two best friends Melody and Mikey. They, along with Damien's parents, provided a strong base of support that kept his childhood from being miserable. Eric would read Harper all the Norse mythos, while Sookie supported their gender fluidity, which was apparent early on.
Still, Damien had a lot of internal turmoil, and her relationships got more complicated as she aged into teenhood. Though he loves his mom and is fiercely protective of her, Damien resents Sookie sometimes for deciding to bring him into the world knowing full well how people would treat him. Eric, meanwhile, struggles to relate to Damien's complex emotions, and Damien is afraid of losing his humanity the same way Eric did. Eventually stops coming to his parents for help altogether. It's during this period of isolation that she explores her vampiric powers of regeneration and performs her own top surgery while Sookie and Eric aren't home, with nothing but her sewing kit and a kitchen knife.
It's only with the help Melody, Mikey, and Norse God Loki (who warned Melody in the first place), that they didn't die from blood loss. Now Damien jokes about it, the same way he makes jokes about most things. Even his chosen name, invoking The Omen, speaks to a twisted sense of humor that helps him cope with how fucking bizarre life is. He's half dead and the Norse God of mischief has the hots for him. What else to do but laugh?

4, 17, 19, 22 for the book asks pls bb 😘
Thank you! 🥰
4. Did you discover any new authors you love this year?
Yes! Which probably had something to do with my decision to read more fiction this year. Georgette Heyer, who can pick you up and drop you straight into Regency England (thank you @marshmallowmcgonagall!). The brilliant Terry Pratchett, which was one of those "where have you been all my life" moments. And of course the master of magic and world-building, Susannah Clarke <3
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
As part of my put-down-the-nonfiction-and-branch-out challenge, I read a contemporary romance for the first time in like...ever, possibly? I mean, I think romance is an underrated genre but I had this idea that it was all some variation of "ambitious career girl who thinks she's ugly but is actually super hot catches the eye of secret billionaire bad boy Rock McAbs, can she heal his inner demons with her magical unicorn vag?" Which maybe I wouldn't mind once in awhile, idk, but I wanted something different, and Written in the Stars by Alexandra Bellefleur was so good. It's f/f, opposites attract, fake dating, and amidst all the delicious tropes were these very real and believable and down-to-earth characters who were so good for each other and such total idiots about it. I loved it.
19. Did you use your library?
SO MUCH. I love libraries and they love me right back <3
22. What's the longest book you read?
That would definitely be Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell, but I'm only about a quarter of the way through so in terms of finished books, I think Fellowship of the Ring, which I re-read over the summer.

who are your top 5 favorite true blood characters?
lol thank you for acknowledging the rewatch that has currently taken over my life.....and your DMs.
and for that, imma give you a top 10 cause i have been reminded of how much i loved villains like Russell and tbh even the Newlins???
Lafayette Reynolds (RIP Nelsan Ellis. Such a beautiful talent.)
Jesus Velasquez
Tara Thornton
Eric Northman
Terry Bellefleur
Sophie-Anne Leclerq*
Russell Edington**
Alcide Herveaux
Pam Swynford de Beaufort
Holly Cleary
*(i need to give Evan her props for making this character so goddamn iconic with her limited run on the show. also Evan was a literal baby when she did this show and held her own against the likes of Denis O'Hare and Askars with ease. i hate that we had to lose that character.)
**('WE WILL EAT YOU AND WE WILL EAT YOUR CHILDREN!! ......NOW FOR THE WEATHER! TIFFANY?!'
sadly YASSS KWEEN SLAY wasn't a term back then or I woulda been shouting it at my tv when i watched it.
thankfully, during the rewatch, i was able to yell YASS KWEEN SLAY AND GAG THE QORLS at that scene. time heals all things. )
#mai does a meme#kinda lol#replies#true blood related#txt#YALL ARE NOT READY FOR WHEN IM DONE THIS REWATCH. IM GONNA SLATHER YOUR DASHES IN NOTHING BUT TRUE BLOOD CONTENT LOL#i truly forgot how fun and addictive and like genuinely camp that show was in its heyday. and also like unapologetically queer.
