I feel like I have come to a point with Tumblr that I need to make a post about the way they have handled (or rather, not handled) moderation. At approximately 3am on Saturday, February 11, 2023, my wife was informed that her Tumblr account had been terminated. This came with no other information. She was not given details as to why her account was terminated and the only recourse she had was to use the "contact support" form to ask why her account was terminated and ask for how she could restore it. As of today, Feb 21, 2023, she has heard back nothing from the moderation team, just an acknowledgement that her emails have been received. We are looking at 10 days with zero communication.

My wife's account was used for fandom, for political commentary, and to discuss queer issues. She was active for years, and should not have been flagged as a bot based on her activity. If she was reported or has broken a rule, we do not know what it could have been. If this could happen to her, it could happen to you, to anyone. She used her account as a primary way of connecting with others and its loss has been a serious blow to her mental health. I have written to support myself and received a response but it was simply to tell me that she should contact them, which she has already done.

It's clear that they are not responding to her for reason or reasons unknown, given the fact that I got a response in 24 hrs but she has gotten nothing at all in 10 days. There seems to be no way to contact the moderation team outside of the support form, which has been ineffective. I feel I have no recourse but to make this issue public. Again, if this could happen to my wife, it could happen to anyone. I am half expecting to be terminated just for writing this post. I am going to try to blaze this, but I doubt they will allow it. If you see it, could you pass it on?

@staff my partner's blog (lolgirl607) just got terminated/closed for seemingly no reason and without warning. They've tried reaching out earlier this week about issues regarding sending/recieving messages but got no response. Today, they were forcibly logged out & asked to log back in, told their password was invalid, and then told their account was terminated.

Can we please fix this? Lolgirl607 doesn't make or post *anything* that goes against tumblr's TOS, they've been here for over a decade, so there should be no concern that they are a bot or that they've broken any rules. If there is an ACTUAL issue or a rule that was broken, it has NOT been communicated in anyway, nor were they given a chance to fix/change anything before this termination.

I had my account terminated last year for no reason with no warning. I didn't even know that was what had happened at first because I primarily use the app and all that happened was the dash suddenly stopped loading, it kept saying "keeps there's been a fucky wucky, try again". tumblr does this all the time so I assumed the app was broken or tumblr was down. it was only when I went to desktop to try and change my password that it said "this account has been terminated". I hadn't had an email to explain why or how to appeal or even that that was what had happened!

I eventually figured out how to appeal and sent the enquiry begging them to reinstate my account as I had no idea why it had been terminated and I couldn't even tell my friends that's what had happened or how to find me. I got an automatic "request received" response.

account termination wipes your entire account: your side blogs, your chat logs, everything. I tried to make a new throwaway account to at least let my friends know what happened, but it was terminated after 10 mins. again, no warning or email or anything.

after a week with no response I sent another enquiry about my terminated account. generic automatic response. another week passed, another enquiry sent, and then one every few days.

I think it was a bit over 6 weeks later that i got an email saying "your account has been reinstated". no reason why it was terminated in the first place, no explanation for the long wait with no responses to my many emails.

so when folks say blogs are getting terminated with no warning and no explanation and noone is answering their requests - this is the standard. this is how tumblr runs. if your account is terminated all you can do is send requests every few days asking why and begging them to reinstate your account. you won't get a response, or a reason, or an apology. it will take weeks. but this is apparently just how it goes.

About 2 weeks ago, my account was suddenly deleted for no reason! I was so shocked and so scared that I thought I would lose this account forever. Luckily, I finally got it back. And now I'm back!

in case you didn't know my account had been terminated completely out of the blue for the past three days - not the individual blog, the whole mothership with all the sideblogs and everything. I contacted support both through the form and through Twitter mentions, got an automated non-answer:

I ended up making a spare account with a different email @bidonica2 so I could badger @/support in their mentions here as well, and also because looking at tumblr while you're logged out is not ideal.

Meanwhile I snooped around to see if it was just me (it's never just you). It turns out at least a handful of other accounts have been arbitrarily terminated since before Christmas, and from what I've seen they were all several years old; but also, they were still active. I wonder if there's an unseen group of terminated accounts for older blogs that the owners didn't notice were gone because they only occasionally log in.

Is it a bug? Is tumblr quietly trying to free server space by arbitrarily deleting older accounts, without bothering to check whether they are long abandoned? I have no idea because I got no direct answer to my inquiries save for the twitter copypasta above, and I only learned about my account being back because friends alerted me my queued posts had appeared on their dash.

I wish tumblr directly addressed the issue. Anyway, in the event this happens to you, file your complaint to support only once because every new ticket you open pushes the old one to the back of the queue. Then badger them on twitter or in their tumblr mentions as much as needed.

Hey its the blog formerly known as dannymasters :( i think i got termed but idrk how to check i just cant do anything on my tumblr so I made a throw away to ask if you could confirm my blog being deleted by staff or something. Idk why it would have but it may have something to do with the “masters” part since the tag is blocked too.

Yeah, I can't reach your blog either. Definitely contact Support (https://www.tumblr.com/support) about this and select "Terminated account" from the category drop-down menu. Use an email address different from the one your account was under, if possible, just in case your email got blocked, but include that address in the information you send. You should get an automatic response back (a support ticket) from Tumblr. If you don't, try another email address.

It may take some time to get your account restored. Support is ridiculously understaffed.

But you're right, it sounds as if "masters" might indeed be one of those flagged words—I don't know how, since I've seen usernames as wild as "blorbopussy" on here. Maybe they're trying to cut down on porn bots by applying a blanket flagging system, which is what they did back in 2018 and was utterly, utterly dumb. Also, if you recently deleted and remade your account, it might have gotten flagged in the system as being spam. Who knows, it's Tumblr. But Support should be able to answer your questions.

my tumblr(s) got terminated earlier today, with no reasoning or notification at all. Watch out, and make sure to send an email to tumblr support immediately if this happens to you!

oh god because what if I never actually get my account back I am so fucking terrified. I don't even know whats actually going to help at this point and I have to rely on a random hopefully legit reddit account to hopefully save me which bless the heart of whoever's running it but also this is a very Unique customer service experience

this is just stressing me out so much tumblr please do better I need a VPN for safety reasons but here I am sacrificing that so I can post this and maybe hopefully reach someone somewhere.

I don't think this will work but @support @staff hi my main account automatic-chainsaw got termed yesterday for no reason other than likely using a VPN and mistakenly tripping a spambot detection algorithm

Hi there, I hope this isn’t annoying, but I was just looking at the terminated account tag and saw your post about getting your account terminated, and then getting it back. (I made this account with a different email after getting terminated, which is why it looks so spammy.) May I ask what you did specifically to get it back? I’m desperate for a solution. I don’t know if my situation makes it worse, but I was terminated for a hate speech violation, to which I realized (only because of the termination) that someone I know had access to my account without my knowledge or consent and was saying and doing hateful things via my account (among other things that I won’t list) it’s been about two and a half weeks and even though I have sent multiple emails and received the zendesk response each time (so theoretically they were all received),I have heard nothing. I’m absolutely devastated because I had that account for years and couldn’t possibly remake it. I have never personally done anything that would cause a termination but I don’t know that it matters since the comments were done on my account. Any information you or anyone else can provide would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for the long ask, and thank you for reading.

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. I also had a very anxious time and was afraid that I would never recover my account. I'm not sure how my account was restored, but I sent three emails to Tumblr support and two letters to Tumblr's hosting company. You can refer to them here . Hope you will get your acc back soon.
