National Prosecco Day on August 13 is the day to let loose. At a time of year when summer is coming to an end, the season must be taken advantage of. Whether throwing a party with friends or hitting a festival, Prosecco will lighten any mood. Prosecco is a sparkling wine made in Veneto, Italy, and is the most sold sparkler in the United States. But what makes prosecco a show-stopper is its mousse. This is the bubbles which give that extra pizazz, perfect for celebrations. Prosecco’s sweet taste and light aroma makes it a wine known for fun and that’s why National Prosecco Day was created. Join us in celebrating this drink and all the fun facts.
History of National Prosecco Day
National Prosecco Day was founded by none other than Riondo Prosecco. It was chosen to be on August 13 due to the timing of summer, with the intention of prosecco being fitting to drink sparkles in summer because of the kind of sparkly drink it is.
Riondo Prosecco actually earned the number one Prosecco title in 2010, also winning a Gold Medal for Minner Vinitaly in 2011. The brand was actually, believe it or not, acquired by Terlato Wines in January of 2016.
Prosecco was named after the Italian village of Prosecco, which is also named after the Prosecco grape. Apart from the sparkling wine we all know and love, it is also made and available in a still wine.
The first known spelling of prosecco was in fact ‘‘Prosecho’’, mentioned by a Englishman named Fynes Moryson who visited the north of Italy. Moryson noted ‘‘Prosecho’’ as among the famous wines in Italy in 1593. Production techniques were altered and improved, and a higher quality wine was produced.
During the millennium, the New York Times reported a sharp spike in global sales of prosecco outside Italy, aided by the fact that the price of this high-quality wine was relatively low. Consumption in the UK ballooned with one quarter of Italian production being exported there by 2010. This was the start of a big change in the wine industry, and prosecco continues being one of the most sold wines in the US today.

2015 Terlato Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio Colli Orientali del Friuli
Chillin’ with this Pinot Greege on a lazy afternoon. Ripe pear, cantaloupe, peach, and stony minerality on the nose. Very ripe on the palate with loads of pears, apricots, peaches, and still a whiff of cantaloupe. Grapefruit finish.

Judy! honestly I don’t even know how can you all drink so many awful drinks like cheap beer at the parties (besides @therealcloke is amazing doing nice cocktails) – but I’m glad to share my top choices with you: Terlato pinot grigio, Prophecy rosé, Proxies pastiche, Jolie folle rosé, Delta pinot noir rosé & Avaline white blend.
P.S. be careful with the rosés, they’re so light to drink that one day both @therealfrancisabernathy and I drank about three bottles by ourselves in just an afternoon without realizing until we couldn’t stand up from his couch.

Rutherford Hill Chardonnay, Napa Valley
Rutherford Hill Chardonnay is made from fruit sourced from the Napa Valley. The grapes grown in the cooler climate of southern Napa that create a wine with striking balance and structure.
Rutherford Hill Winery was founded in Rutherford, Napa in 1972, where the original owners believed that the climate and soil of the valley were well suited to Merlot, similar to Pomerol. In 1996, the Terlato family purchased the Rutherford Hill winery and embraced its legendary commitment to quality over quantity. Today, 75% of production is dedicated to Merlot. Winemaker Marisa Taylor continues to craft beautiful wines and is 100% committed to sustainable winegrowing and winemaking practices. A new state-of-the art facility for the production of reserve wines ─ a “winery within a winery” ─ began taking shape in spring of 2000 and was functional in time for that year’s harvest. Costing more than $7 million, the 5,100-square foot winery addition has 24 fermentation tanks ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 gallons. It is self-contained, complete with its own press, refrigeration capabilities (tanks are jacketed for both warming and cooling glycol) and harvest crew.
Rutherford Hills have over 130 acres of vineyards across Napa Valley which reflect the region’s diversity of soils and microclimates that allow the winery to consistently show the best of the appellation for every vintage. There are vineyards in the Pope Valley, on the warmer eastern edge of the Vaca Mountains, Rutherford, the Mee Lane vineyard offers a touch of “Rutherford Dust” and the Rutherford Hill Estate Vineyard, with its rocky, hillside soils, brings intensity and structure to the varietals planted high above the valley floor.
The grapes for the Rutherford Hill Chardonnay are carefully hand-picked into half-ton bins and whole cluster pressed to provide the highest quality wine possible, then barrel fermented. The wine then ages sur lie for 8 months in French oak barrels, 25% New Oak.

2016 Terlato & Domaine Chapoutier S-Block Shiraz
I've never seen this bottle before. I bought it at a local shop here in Napa CA. Had no idea Chapoutier had a colab with an operation in Australia. Terlato is a well known US importer/producer here in the US. This bottle is most likely a custom crush from grapes from the Pyrenees sub region of Victoria. 30$ average retail cost. (I got mine for 16$) =D

Running this wine through WSET Level 4 Grid:
Inductive Tasting
This wine is clear, it has a deep ruby core fading to a slightly tawny rim. No evidence of gas or sediment. (The core is fu*king jet black)
On the Nose:
This wine is clean, with an overall medium plus intensity. The wine is balanced with primary fruits of black cherry, stewed plums, blackberry preserves, raspberry jam dominating the conversation. Secondary: Vanilla, cedar, nutmeg, dark chocolate, cloveTertiary: Cigar box, dried herbs, smoked meat, desiccated violets, spent coffee grounds.
On the Palate:
This wine is dry (3-9 g/l residual sugar). Acid is medium, medium + would be a stretch. Tannin is medium + with some possible resolution (this is a 2016). Alcohol is high, and the wine is full bodied with a pronounced flavor intensity. Confirming on the palate: Black cherry, chocolate, black berry, plum, herbs, a sort of gamey/funky characteristic but def not Northern Rhone levels of funk. The palate is dominated by deep black/purple primary fruit. There is an oaky body/mid palate/weightiness.
The finish is medium +
Final Conclusions: This wine is very good.
Drink now or age for another 5-10 years.

Sanford Pinot Noir ‘Sta. Rita Hills’ 2019, Lompoc, Calif.
When it comes to California Pinot Noir, some of the best are coming out of Santa Barbara — a region that should be on your radar every bit as much as the Russian River Valley in Sonoma or the Carneros District of Napa and Sonoma.
Santa Barbara Pinot Noir, especially from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, is California’s answer to the cool-climate, higher-acid style of France’s Burgundy — in other words, somewhat leaner wines that showcase elegance and finesse as much as ripe and concentrated fruit.
A top example is the 2019 “Sta. Rita Hills” Pinot Noir from Sanford Winery, a pioneer of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, which lies in the Santa Ynez Valley northwest of the city of Santa Barbara.
This newly released wine will mellow with some bottle age but is drinking beautifully right now in its youthful exuberance. With its medium body, moderate alcohol (13.5 percent), smooth tannins, and well-integrated oak, the fruit is the star here.
Notes of red and black cherry, raspberry, and touches of cinnamon and orange rind combine in a delicious, refreshing Pinot Noir that shows depth and balance. It’s made for grilled or roasted duck, white meats, and salmon. The grapes are from the winery’s Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada vineyards. The wine is priced well at about $40, and about 7,400 cases were produced, so it should be widely available.
Sanford traces its roots to 1971, when Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict planted their first Pinot Noir vines. In 2005, the Terlato family, an owner and marketer of luxury wine brands, became the majority owner of the winery. No doubt, Sanford is a jewel in its crown.

#Wine Quickie: @terlatowines Coli Orientali Fruili Pinot Grigio 2017. I'm not all that big on Italian Pinot Grigio but let's say that I'm in a shop looking for one: Friuli is where I would start. Terlato's Coli Orientali is a pale straw yellow in color. There's a nice floral cloud over aromas of pears, honey, and almonds. In the mouth it's rather rich compared to its colleagues, with a little bit of an oily mouthfeel and restrained acidity. There's flavors of pears, lemon, and almonds, with a salivating finish of lemon peel and almonds. A bottle will cost you around $26 and deservedly so.
