Un tale che era stato in Siberia mi raccontava di essere stato egli stesso testimone di come i più inveterati delinquenti si ricordavano del generale; eppure, visitando le colonne dei deportati, era raro che potesse distribuire più di venti copeche a testa. Non già che se ne ricordassero con gran calore o molto profondamente. Qualcuno di quei "disgraziati", che forse aveva ucciso dodici persone o accoppato sei ragazzi unicamente per il proprio piacere (si dice che ce ne siano stati), un bel giorno, e forse una sola volta in tutti i suoi vent'anni di galera, sospirava improvvisamente e diceva a un tratto: "E che ne sarà del vecchio generale? Sarà ancora vivo?" Nel dir questo, poteva anche darsi che sorridesse, ed era tutto. Ma che ne sapete voi del seme che aveva gettato per sempre nella sua anima quel "vecchio generale", non dimenticato da lui durante venti anni? Che ne sapete voi, Bachmutov... come si fa a sapere quale significato potrà avere la comunione di un'anima con un'altra per le sorti dell'umanità?... Qui si tratta di una vita intera, con infinite ramificazioni a noi ignote. Il miglior giocatore di scacchi, il più lungimirante, non può prevedere che poche mosse: di un giocatore francese che ne sapeva prevedere dieci fu scritto che era un prodigio. Ma nel nostro caso quante sono le mosse e quanto è vasto l'ignoto? Gettando il vostro seme, gettando la vostra "carità", la vostra buona azione in qualsiasi forma, voi cedete una parte della vostra personalità e accogliete in voi una parte dell'altrui: entrate in comunione l'uno con l'altro; ancora un po' di attenzione, e sarete già ricompensato da un nuovo sapere e dalle più inattese scoperte. Finirete infallibilmente col considerare l'opera vostra come una scienza; essa assorbirà tutta la vostra vita e potrà colmarla di sé. D'altro lato, tutti i vostri pensieri, tutti i semi da voi gettati, e da voi forse già dimenticati, s'incarneranno e cresceranno, e chi da voi li ha ricevuti, li trasmetterà ad altri. The 322nd Rifle Division was a standard Red Army rifle division during World War II. It is most notable for liberating Auschwitz as part of the 60th Army on January 27, 1945, in the course of the Vistula-Oder offensive. Prior to this the division also distinguished itself during the second liberation of Zhitomir on the last day of 1943. It received further distinctions for its service in western Ukraine and in Poland. Along with many other distinguished Soviet formations it was disbanded with the coming of peace.

The division was established at Gorki in the Moscow Military District in August, 1941. At its formation, the basic order of battle was as follows:

1085th Rifle Regiment

1087th Rifle Regiment

1089th Rifle Regiment

886th Artillery Regiment

297th Antitank Battalion

603rd Sapper Battalion

Once formed in October, it was noted that the division was 90% Russian, with a cadre of 8% Communist Party members or Komsomols. At this time it was assigned to 10th Reserve Army; it was noted as being short of trained officers, basic equipment, and weapons. The first divisional commander recorded in Commanders of Corps and Divisions in the Great Patriotic War, 1941 - 1945 is Col. Pyotr Isaevich Filimanov, appointed on January 25, 1942 and replaced by Col. Gurii Nikitich Terentev a month later. Terentev would be promoted to Major General on January 27, 1943.
