Finished FF16 a few days ago and I do have some (long) thoughts about it, so I'm noting them down below. Reactions include the Waloed & Origin arcs.

Tagging @zadien as you requested <3 My thoughts won't be organized but I'll try my best to articulate as I go. Wall of text alert!

I think this is yet another case of "the story didn't satisfy me a lot but the characters bewitched me body and soul" so here I am at the end of the roads... with a lot of grievances toward how the story was structured & written but also impossibly attached to the cast haha, needless to say I have fanart ideas planned and incoming.

Things that I enjoyed a lot:

CliveJill's scene with the snow daisies, where she tells Clive that she wants to spread her wings after all this is over. MY GIRLFRIEND... YOU SHALL HAVE THE WORLD.

Jill being so good with acting dkfjsl <3 <3 she's so cute....

Jill being as much of a ruthless mtfk as Clive, they're soooo in tune when it comes to wrecking havoc

Everything about Joshua he brings SO SO MUCH to the table both with his personalities and the themes he represents. I would ramble if not for fear of this post's length...

Dion's contradictory demeanor hahahahaha - he insisted everyone call him "Dion" but wouldn't shut up about "Ifrit" and "Phoenix", he also refused Harpocrates' gift but then gave another to Clive 2 seconds later, then sauntered off without even checking if Clive likes it or not...

I generally bemoan the lack of discussion on Dion's relationship with his country's imperialism and his hands in that (like, everything about him was perfect to address that topic even in very brief ways?), BUT I highly enjoyed Dion's theme about the loss of personhood and to be reduced to a vessel of power and worship, his multifaceted relationship with the concepts of power & duty & hierarchy. So subtly yet powerfully done with so little screen time... I think Clive's own engagement with the theme (which is supposed to be his central theme) comes short in comparison.

Dion's side quest with Harpocrates also scratched my brain in INCREDIBLY ways, but again I won't ramble too much in this post...

Dion & Joshua's dialogues are all so well-written (maybe save for Joshua's last speech...)

Everything about Mid & Gav, they're beautifully done, I love them they have such solid places within the narrative and lovely personalities too. When I watched Mid navigating the Entreprise I was just squealing and cheering for her! Her talking about the dream of flight and the danger it might entail, and her plan of turning such a weighted topic into a lighthearted treasure hunt! My gosh 💗 Gav's drinking scene with Clive is also especially touching, I felt a lot for his burdens.

Clive holding Joshua or clutching his body...... breaks me every time I love love LOVE tragic siblings

I can honestly write an essay for each of the characters (especially Jill & Dion my thoughts about them are overflowing) but they will have to be separate posts at this point, let me know @zadien (or anyone else reading this 🫣) if you'd like me to talk some more.

NOW onto the criticisms proper...

Waloed & Origin arcs were pretty underwhelming, mostly because I feel like they haven't offered anything new that wasn't already resolved in the previous arcs...? I enjoyed Barnabas' vibe but his impact on me was a big fat 0, and here comes the conundrum because, well, I'm guessing him being emotionless & devoid of a personality is supposed to be the point with his worship of Ultima, but even that was not done well... All his bedroom scenes kinda ruined all of that, not to mention the out-of-nowhere 'mother' appearances that the story doesn't even bother to explore aside from showing her naked body (Benedikta got the same treatment after her death my god I'm so sorry my beloved)...

Idk what I'm supposed to take away from the character and, in consequence, the Waloed arc? I know nothing of who he was, his dialogues didn't even match Clive's growth at that point - again, why is Clive questioning his humanity NOW of all time, when the story has been going so well? Could they have, idk, shown Clive's fear coming back to him after reuniting with Joshua & discovering Dion's descend to madness, so that they can segue into the Waloed arc more smoothly - that despite Clive's best intention he may lose all his control at the most crucial point and ruin all that he holds dear (like Dion), and that he never let go of his guilt at Phoenix Gate, and having Joshua back unwittingly brought back the nightmares he'd lived with for 13 years? Maybe that would give his identity crisis at the beach some more substance instead of "Barnabas bested me twice and now I'm wet and sat" situation he got going on... I am thankful for Mid & Dion's arc & CliveJill romance & everything about Joshua but the main villain & plot points felt so distant... MY BRAIN WAS NOT SCRATCHED

I am also not really convinced by Ultima's writing. The plot reveal of him being a God who created humanity but then abandoned us all *could* have been pretty powerful and on point if it wasn't executed in such fragmented ways. If only they dig deeper into one or two specific aspects of that concept to explore...

I am especially fond of the idea of Ultima as symbolic for "the absent parent" and "the narcissistic parent" (both in the intimate familial context and the wider context of head-of-state/leader figures), which could have paralleled SO WELL with Anabella & Sylvestre & EVEN ELWIN had they not cut off Anabella's presence immediately after her death, or had they make Dion reflect deeper upon his relationship with his father beyond "I killed him I am so sad", or had they make Joshua's and Clive's memories of Elwin more complicated - maybe in how they (especially Joshua) worshipped his as their father & leader, but less so as a man, someone human & flawed? And then they can explore how the children gaining autonomy & freedom despite their parents & the circumstances that shaped their childhood as a direct mirror to them breaking away from Ultima? The frustrating thing is, I THINK they did try to do that, what with all the Inner Voice snippets and the initial buildups and all, but the execution keeps coming up short...

Ultima & the Eikons as symbols of "power that binds & enthralls" in contradiction with Clive's fight for a "free world" could've been much more relevant and poignant if maybe they allowed us to get more invested in Ultima's backstory (flashback cutscenes perhaps? more involved murals? a more multifaceted discussion around the concept of will? some attempts at humanizing Ultima's race so that when Clive says "you're just like us" we feel it a bit deeper?) instead of just having the guy monotonously narrating all the plot twists... my god. Not to mention all the on-the-nose dialogues of power of friendship & crude slavery allegories... I don't know! I think Square did NOT do it well in this one.

That's all I can pull from the top of my head at the moment! Ready to hop into replies or asks to talk some more, but yea!

i am so emotional with harpocrates and dion's side quest. harpocrates who blames himself for not have offered dion his friendship and support besides the knowledge he shared with him when he was once his tutor. dion who feels so incredibly guilty for having destroyed his nation, what he held the most deer, who feels deeply ashamed and scared of what the person that inspired him all those years ago might think of him and his character after his deeds. harpocrates who doesn't blame him for another's ill intent but recognizes the anguish the prince battles with everyday and who wants to atone for his sense of personal failure towards him by gifting him the flower that represents his nation and making him know he isn't defined by his roots, that he is proud of the man the prince became. dion who is so thankful for the role the loresman had in his life but doesn't feel worthy of receiving the symbol of his people before fullfiling the duty he believes he has, si he defers the flower until after he bids his life against the one who ruined his nation to atone for the crimes he committed. harpocrates who plans cultivate wyvern tails for dion's return and bids farewell with an obvious sadness in his voice. dion who's reparation of his wrongdoings has been looking a bit too much like a forever depart...

Jodio - Shy Guy (specifically the dark blue version)

Lowkey a pro at this game. Likes to challenge himself in time trials and knows all the best cart combinations. If there is a shortcut on the track, he WILL take it (and will almost always be successful). Actually enjoys Rainbow Road (the real reason for his psychopath diagnosis).

Dragona - Pink Gold Peach (I could see them picking Daisy too)

Just there to have a good time tbh. At least most of the time, because every now and then when they're doing particularly well their competitive streak kicks in, and trust me – once they get into it, they get REALLY into it (cross them at your own risk). Favorite track is Cheep Cheep Beach.

Paco - Bowser

He thinks gaming is dumb and a waste of time (definitely not because he sucks at it). On the rare occasion he does get convinced to play, he keeps bumping into walls and other players (it doesn't help that he picks one of the heaviest characters in the game). Known for notoriously running into banana peels. Gaming sessions usually end in him "inviting" the other players to the gym.

Usagi - Luigi

Relates to Luigi on a personal level for being the underappreciated helper of the group. He's actually quite good at the game. His aim is freakishly accurate and he loves to hoard items to target other players (for unknown reasons they seem to hit everyone but Dragona). Similarly to Jodio, he takes shortcuts almost every chance he gets, but unlike Jodio, it doesn't always go so well. Also probably likes Baby Park like the freak he is.

Charmingman - Dry Bones

Used to play with Mauka a lot, so he's surprisingly good, and can get quite competitive too. Drives solely on bikes, which give him some good ol' maneuverabilty to avoid all those damn banana peels Usagi keeps throwing around. Secretly loves the music tracks and sometimes listens to them while riding his bike irl, imagining himself to be in a race. Favorite item is Boo.

Yet another victory for the straw hats, your crew had gathered around a beach nearby and started up a campfire. A few people from the town you had saved were there to celebrate and thank Luffy for protecting them and practically saving them. You stood off to the side and watched as everyone was enjoying themselves. Usopp was near the fire telling several children and a few adults about his adventures, as well as saving a group of people. You let out a small laugh, as the children watched in amazement and disbelief that he was that strong and capable whilst the adults had all their brows furrowed.

You watched as people began to dance along with the soft music that was playing, you smiled for a moment before you glanced around. Everyone was so distracted with their own thing and yet here you were, stood alone. You swallowed suddenly the thought that everyone was whispering and staring at you for being alone filled your thoughts, you harshly looked down hoping to find something more interesting about the ground than what was standing upon it a few feet away from you.

Sanji had finally run out of food to serve and was done for the night, he wiped his hands off on his towel and then placed it off to the side. A few girls came up to him and urged him to dance, he almost gave into their begging before his eyes saw you. A pain ran through his chest as he saw you standing there alone, you looked amazing and he was shocked that no one had come up to ask you to dance. The girls in front of him snapped him away from you but it only made him realize, why wasn’t he asking you?

“Sorry ladies, I've already gotten a dance partner.” He smiled to him a soft smile, hoping they’d give up and walk off. They didn’t so he resorted to simply walking away from them and going towards you, they followed after him spewing out a few more pleas before they spotted you and froze.

Sanji smiled as he approached you and heard the girls’ voice stop almost instantly, his hands kept in his pockets as he finally stood in front of you. “Evening love.” He spoke out, your eyes darting upwards immediately and being met with his ocean-blue eyes. “Oh… Sanji.” You spoke out, you glanced around to see if you had zoned out long enough that everyone was leaving but to your dismay, you saw that everyone was still partying and enjoying their time.

His eyes studied your face, taking in every single feature about you before you connected your eyes back with his. “Why aren’t you out there flirting with another lady?” You ask him, attempting to shove down your thoughts you put a mischievous grin on your lips. He laughed at your comment before he spoke again, “That’s what I’m trying to do right now.” The way he said it so calmly and quickly made your heart flutter, your grin had dropped and your eyebrows raised. “Me? You are trying to flirt with me?” You asked in disbelief.

He smiled at you and nodded, “I mean, I am talking to you, no?” He asked you, his head slightly tilting to the side as he then brought his hand up to hold it out for you to take it. “So will I have the honor?” He straightened his head back up. You swallowed heavily as you stared at him taking a moment to process what he had just asked of you before your eyes slowly moved down to his hand, you felt yourself smile softly. “I think you will.” You say as you place your hand in his looking up to see a small glimmer of excitement in his eyes.

He leads you to the group of people dancing and slowly brings you closer to him, his hand letting go of yours and instantly attaching them to his hips. You felt your heart do a little flutter yet again your eyes struggling to keep eye contact with him, so you kept your eyes stuck on his shoulder. He took notice too this and took a moment before one of his hands lifted to gently redirect your face to look towards him, “Nervous?” He asked you, you swore you could hear a small purr at the end of the word.

You let out a soft laugh as you looked down at your feet, Sanji began to shift the two of you side to side along with the music. You take a moment before you let out a soft sigh, “Just a little…” You take a moment before you blurt out the truth “I never thought I’d be here dancing with you.” You say, then looking up at him to meet your eyes with his. God his eyes were beautiful, you’ve always thought the ocean was beautiful but as you stared into his eyes you couldn’t help but think they were almost… more beautiful.

The two of you stared into each other's eyes and you watched as his eyes slowly moved down to your lips, your stomach began to tighten with anticipation. I wonder if his lips are as soft as they look. You thought as your eyes looked down at his lips, you weren’t sure but you were 50% positive that he had tilted his head and was beginning to lean in closer to you. You found yourself moving closer getting caught in your own thoughts and belief that Sanji would ever want to kiss you.

“[Name]!” You heard your voice being called and you turned your head to look over at Luffy, He ran over excited to show you a new thing he found somewhere off near the water. You immediately scolded him for getting so close to the water without anyone else around, not realizing that you had pulled away from Sanji. Sanji watched you get dragged away from him, he almost kissed you… and of course, the moment had to be ruined. Nami walked over to Sanji and nudged him, “That almost hurt to watch.” She teased him, Sanji looked at her and pouted internally before he found a response “Just, it wasn’t the right time.” He says a small smile on his face, Nami walks away laughing leaving Sanji to pout alone.

You guys, I can't.... Final Fantasy 16 added 'The Inner Voice' in the Grand Cast tab under the State of the Realm and it is too amazing.

On the one hand, you have Jill meeting Jote and thinking "I know how you feel". Goddamn these Rosfields do not know how to love their ladies.

And then you have Joshua promising Cid that his sacrifice won't be in vain. That he always knew Dion would come through for him. Wondering if Jote likes her new home. Apologizing to Jill that Clive took her Eikon.

Jote thinking that she's uncomfortable around dogs and Torgal sensing it and thinking that he'd never hurt her. Jote admiring Mid for being so bright and being jealous of Crow's childhood.

Dion missing Terence, being annoyed by Obolus' singing, and being afraid to face Harpocrates.

Clive's stages of grief when he thinks about Joshua and then him asking Torgal if he saw him at Drake's Head. His reaction to Cid's death.

And then you have Torgal wondering where everyone went after Phoenix gate and wondering where Cid went.

Oh my God, it's just so awesome and heartbreaking.

Just heard the heartbreaking news, one of the greatest, most awesome and all time INCREDIBLE actors of all time, as well as one of the sweetest, kindest and most selfless human beings ever, has passed away. The seemingly immortal James Earl Jones, one of the most famous actors of his generation, well respected on both big and small screens AND on the stage for over SEVEN DECADES, respeonsible for portraying some of my favourite screen characters ever ... this might be the one that hurts me the most this year ...

Of course, like everybody, he will FOREVER be most closely associated with Star Wars, as the voice of probably the greatest screen villain of all time, Darth Vader.

But he was also King Jaffe Joffer, the father of Eddie Murphy's wayward prince in Coming to America and its sequel ...

The Counter Culture author Terence Mann in the magnificent Field of Dreams, as well as ...

NSA Agent Abbott in director Phil Alden Robinson's next film, the underrrated suspense thriller Sneakers ...

Simba's dad Mufasa in The Lion King ...

Jack Ryan's CIA boss and father figure, Admiral Jim Greer, in The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games AND Clear & Present Danger ...

The man had an AMAZING RUN, and he is guaranteed to go down as one of the all time greats, beloved around the world and destined to become one of the true icons of the 20th AND 21st Centuries, remembered LONG after his passing. But he's STILL gone far too soon ...

This game broke me

I finally played FF16 after my friend got me into it and the game kinda broke me??? It was so good but the ending just came for my feelings oh my gosh. Where to begin??? First off, the graphics are stunning. This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The character designs, backgrounds, bosses... so much detail and beauty poured into the designs.

The characters are my favorite part because they were just so good imo. Cid was my favorite. Character design aside (he was really hot), I loved his personality, dry sense of humor, motivations, and his dynamic with the others, especially Clive. Cid cares so much and was willing to throw away what was probably a very decorated military career in Waloed just so Otto's son would have a place to live in the cruel world surrounding them. He took Clive in when the man was lost and had nowhere to go after saving Jill from the Ironblood. Cid is such a beacon of light and his presence fills the entire game, even after his passing. He was such an amazing character.

And Dion (he was also hot). This man had such an incredible character arc. Much like Cid, Dion carries a strong sense of justice and duty with him and I found myself falling in love with his character pretty quick. Everything he does is for the good of the people of Sanbreque, going so far as to call out his father when the latter begins disregarding his citizens. And my heart broke seeing Dion try and come to terms with what happened when he lost control of Bahamut. He lost everything and even had to let go of his boyfriend. I know he achieved his goal of atonement, but I secretly cope that he survived and ran off with Terence somewhere. Seriously, such a complex and amazing character.

Gav my man. I adore him so much, especially his plucky nature. Like Cid, like Dion, like the Rosfield brothers, what draws me to Gav is the character's strong sense of justice and his huge heart. One trait that connects our heroes is that they have so much love and care for the people around them and the world. Everything Dion does is for Sanbreque. Everything Cid does is for Bearers, Dominants, and even other people who've faced injustice. Everything Clive does is for Joshua and carrying Cid's legacy. Gav is no different. He has such a drive and energy that's so infectious and man, I love it.

Clive and Joshua during the endgame really had me in tears because their relationship really hit me hard. I wanted them to be alright and not lose each other again so badly. Clive was willing to go to the ends of the earth to avenge his brother and later, he found him. That reunion in Twinside was so beautiful and well-earned. I think reflecting on why I loved these characters is because the world is so messy and seeing people filled with genuine love and wanting for change struck a chord with me. Jill and Clive's relationship is so tender and I'm just sitting here enjoying the beauty in their love. As a character, I loved Jill and much like Dion, my heart broke watching her struggle with her inner demons. She suffered so much, but always kept her head up and pushed forward.

The antagonists were also very, very fun for me. Anabella sucks. I hate her, especially because she Red Wedding'd House Stark... I mean House Rosfield. The amount of Game of Thrones inspirations in this game is too many to count. Elwin literally gets the Ned Stark treatment in the first hour of the game. Sleipnir is basically Ghirahim and I loved it. Very sly and crafty character. Barnabas aka Barnie was hot and crazy. He was very entertaining. I did develop a soft spot for Benadikta after learning about her backstory. She's actually very similar to Darth Maul if I think about it; both characters were slaves to monsters. Later on, both characters turn away the chance for redemption, trapped by their pasts and insecurities. Kupka... was Kupka. This man got the worst deck in the game here. I didn't like him, but man got played by everyone. Ultima genuinely made me uncomfortable. His lore reveal just made me wanna pause the game and sit in the shower. And then when Ultima became Ultimalius, he got a bob cut and I just couldn't take him seriously. He was entertaining though.

The music was phenomenal and it's probably the best video game soundtrack I've ever heard (aside from Legend of Zelda). I love to sing all the songs in the car because it's just that good. My faves are (in no particular order): All For One, Hide Hideaway, Away, Find the Flame, Heart of Stone, Ascension, The Riddle, Blood Beats Black, and To Sail Forbidden Seas. All are absolute bangers.

My favorite boss is definitely Bahamut (that was a beautiful fight), but Titan, Odin, and Ultimalius were close contenders. I put Ultimalius here because I was just having fun beating this guy up with all the Eikon powers and "All For One" was playing so I felt cool.

My nitpicks/criticisms towards the game mainly are minor. Honestly, my biggest one would be more development for Waloed and Barnie. By the time we got there, I felt as if I'd seen every corner of Rosaria, Sanbreque, and Dhalmekia. Waloed just felt so empty and I get that that was the point, but I wish we got some DLC for it or maybe a redesign. They hyped it up a lot and I just wish we got a little more with it. Also, I need more Gav. I love him. (this is more joking).

I loved the game's political intrigue and the relations between the different nations. This is the Game of Thrones fan in me talking. Honestly, we could've had a game without Ulitma and I'd just be happy watching Cid and Clive free the bearers from slavery. Dion chucks Anabella out of a window, saves Sanbreque, we all sing Kumbaya, and everyone cheers.

And the love... square? Pyramid? Idk. I found it mildly amusing. A good chunk of this game's plot revolves around the fact that Benadikta still has feelings for Cid, but is also manipulating Kupka's feelings for her, all the while is sleeping with Barnie is wild. And then Barnie does *things* in order to make Kupka go into a grieving rage and attack Cid. In another genre such as a sitcom, this would be some crazy drama plot in which all three men find out about the other and their relationship with Benadikta and stuff goes down.

Anyways, I absolutely loved this game! I'm very excited to play the DLC and will definitely get going on the NG+.

Oh and for anyone wondering, my Eikon arrangement with Ramuh, Bahamut, and Garuda/Odin. Saved my life many times when the horde came for me.

And Torgal is the best boy!
