Coal India to purchase dumpers from BEML at Rs 400 crore

Kolkata: Coal India signed two purchase pacts totaling nearly Rs 400 crore with state-owned heavy earth moving machinery manufacturer BEML, for buying seven 150-tonne dumpers and eight 190-tonne dumpers.

This is part of the company’s plans to invest upwards of Rs 7000 crore in acquiring 360-odd heavy mining machinery over the next three-four years to enhance production for achieving a billion tonnes production capacity by 2024.

The contract cost for 150-tonne dumpers is around Rs150 crore and that of 190-tonne dumpers is Rs 250 crore. Dumpers used in opencast coal mines play a critical role in hauling coal and the top soil.

The 150-tonne dumpers would be deployed on trial basis in the Gevra opencast project of South Eastern Coalfields, Coal India’s Chattisgarh based subsidiary.

Whereas, four each of 190-tonne dumpers would be put to use on trial basis in Amlohri and Nigahi OC projects of Northern Coalfields Limited which operates out of Madhya Pradesh and partly Uttar Pradesh.

The scope of the contracts covers supply of dumpers as well as spares and consumables for a period of eight years.

In a bid to promote ‘Make in India’ Coal India has been pursuing developmental tenders to encourage indigenous manufacturers for their greater participation.

From CIL’s point of view it would be beneficial to the company, in future, in widening alternative competitive sources for regular orders. CIL awarded the dual contracts to BEML against global tenders issued by it.

This move would also help the Indian mining equipment manufacturer in their capacity and capability building. There are no other indigenous manufacturers for this category of high capacity dumpers.

The machinery procurement list for Coal India includes, draglines, dumpers of varying capacities, large capacity shovels and dozers. It has recently invited bids for procuring draglines — large cranes used in open cast mines, for which it would be spending around Rs 1100 crore. This apart, it has issued nine global tenders for e-procurement through a reverse auction mechanism. This year the company’s plans was to spend a total of Rs 4000 crore in purchasing heavy mining machinery, however, delivery and payment may spill into the next financial.

Coal India’s is currently working on 66 new and brownfield projects with a tentative investment budge of Rs 56,000 crore which aims to increase production by 500 million tonnes over the next few years. The projects are at various stages of implementation and would require heavy investments in mining machinery.

“Few years ago the Coal India board took a conscious decision to increase capacities of mining equipment. It is getting implemented in a phased manner as and when mines are being expanded and new large mines are opened up,” said a senior Coal India executive.

Following, the decision to employ heavy equipment at mines the company’s productivity, measured in terms of yearly average production per worker, has increased nearly 19% to 2126 tonnes annually in the last three years.

“An employee produced 7.53 tonnes of coal in an shift of eight hours three years ago. Following induction of larger equipment, it has increased 13%. Increased productivity leads to economies of scale and reduced costs,” the executive said.

Although, only about 5% of the company’s production comes from underground mines, last year, it has also employed 16 high capacity production equipment in 11 mines last year.

The plan is to procure heavy machinery along with installation and commissioning charges and consumables for certain period beyond warranty period.

Fashion’s eco chase: on The Voice of Fashion’s recent India Sustainability Report

Every year, a new crop of designers gain recognition at our fashion weeks. And with each passing year, their eco-conscious stories get stronger. But are they getting it right? Until now, it has been a murky playing field, and with no numbers to indicate consumer awareness, it is tough to gauge if your favourite brand is greenwashing, or if it is adopting sustainable practices. But change is in the offing with The Voice of Fashion’s (TVF) India Sustainability Report. “It is India’s first consumer and manufacturer study on sustainability in fashion and retail,” says TVF editor Shefalee Vasudev, explaining that the report is aimed at understanding where the country’s fashion industry stands in the global sustainability movement.

Keeping track

Released at Lakme Fashion Week’s UN Circular Design Challenge last week, it delves into the Indian consumer’s psyche. From awareness on recycling, vintage, rented and pre-loved fashion to the willingness to change or minimise consumption, the two-part survey analyses trends from four respondent groups comprising 937 adults across New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. For the second part of the study, CEOs and/or sustainability officers from 17 top Indian fashion and retail brands were interviewed.

Explaining the rationale behind picking the 17, Vasudev says, “We opted for brands that dominated the retail scenario [Aditya Birla Fashion Retail Limited, Lifestyle, Levi’s]; those part of SU.RE, a charter signed by 16 retail captains with IMG Reliance last year; and labels that promise sustainability as a part of their brand DNA [Rahul Mishra, péro], among other factors.”

Green quotient

Amidst the many findings, it is interesting to note how 82% of those surveyed were not aware that the fashion industry is among the top three contributors to pollution. “Conversion is a slow process and will take a long time to be visible. But its time has come,” says Vasudev, adding, “From Incredible India to bridal couture, and fashion week communication to retail posters, sustainability in different forms, in all languages, must be spoken about.”

But the willingness quotient is high: 49% of respondents are open to adopting sustainable practices, especially where the fabric is sourced from coffee beans, bananas, or wood pulp. Vasudev says this could well be because these ingredients have a quick recall. “The study has also revealed how 23% do not want to use recycled garments [due to fear of skin allergies, etc].”

New avenues

The study can also create new opportunities. For instance, the fact that 4% choose to make mops or bags from old clothes could translate into an idea for a small-scale green enterprise. Vasudev agrees, and suggests fashion designers can also create a collective that sells table, home, kitchen and bed linen from fabric and material leftovers. “It can be branded as ‘designer upcycled’ and sold. With the emphasis on designer weddings, stylists can craft tents or enclosures with leftover fabric [brocade, silks] collected from brands.”

Discarded buttons, zips, hooks and tassels can be crafted into hair accessories or jewellery, and “denim manufacturing companies can explore ideas like forming a sustainable jeans coalition of India — which can look into technological innovations: jeans that don’t need to be washed for a month, distribution of jeans from discarded material to rickshaw pullers and shelter camps, and denim pants or uniforms for government schools,” she concludes.

Garware Wall Ropes Ltd (GWRL) is engaged in the manufacturing of ropes, twines and cordage, nettings, multi-filament yarns, and geotechnical nets and fabrics of nets and net-related products. It provides innovative and application focused solutions to diversified applications across fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, sports, and other segments. The fisheries segment is the biggest contributor to overall revenue (~25%), followed by ropes (~23-25%) and aquaculture (~20%). In India, the use of technical textiles has been gaining momentum. GWR aims to capitalize on this trend to capture a higher market share (particularly in fields with a low competitive intensity such as geosynthetics, agriculture, and defence). With the rationalization of GST rates on fishnets and some agriculture products, the domestic business is expected to revive. In the defence space, GWR has expanded its product range from camouflage nets to inflatable tents, surveillance balloons, PVC-coated water storage tanks, and aerostats. In the agriculture segment, the company’s product line-up now includes insect protection nets, shade nets, and hail protection nets. GWRL aims to win defence contracts by forging partnerships and developing new products to complement its traditional offerings of industrial ropes, textiles and nets used in fishing and sports. The company has started making fabric covers that protect radar equipment from weather conditions; it signed a pact with Israel’s Aero-T to manufacture surveillance balloons called aerostats. Other notable innovation in this segment includes inflatable tents such as the new Hi5 (“Home-in-5 minutes”) tents. Compared to conventional metal frame tents, GWRL’s Hi5 tents have lower weight, are easily transportable, are highly durable and can be inflated in just 5 minutes. GWRL looks attractive currently given its strong technical textiles capabilities. Improved product mix and cost efficiencies should result in steady gains in margins.
