“Ranma ½” The New Opening Theme, First Promo, Fall 2024 Premiere

The opening theme and first promotional video were all made public during the Ranma ½ livestream on the anime's official X website. The new anime is slated to debut on NTV on October 6 at 12:55 a.m.

Pulptober 2024 Day 23: Ranma Saotome/Hero with a Harem

Since we're playing fast and loose with the definition of "pulp" and shounen manga as a medium are most assuredly an inexpensive and disposable periodical which features exciting stories aimed at a broad audience, I'm going with Ranma Saotome for this one.

Especially as there's a new remake of the anime coming out this year.

Rumiko Takahashi has had several hits over the years, and adjusts things about each series as she learns from the last one. Her previous shounen series, Urusei Yatsura, had a male lead, Ataru Moroboshi, who wanted a harem. That is, a bevy of beauties who would give him affection on demand. Over the course of the series, while Ataru was attracted to many girls and women, only his childhood friend Shinobu and zany alien Lum ever had any affection for him, and Shinobu soon moved on.

But the multifaceted love dodecahedron thing had legs, so Takahashi incorporated it into this series as well. Ranma, though, had much less interest in getting hot and heavy with pretty ladies--his potential romantic partners are largely forced on him. And the genderbending curse made resolving romantic tensions a relatively low priority in his eyes. He does grow to have a mutual attraction with Akane, but there are so many other things going on (including their respective tempers) that even by the end of the manga there's not a full resolution.

And unlike some later "harem" series, Ranma isn't the only guy who's getting attention. There are girls who like other boys in the series, and boys who like other girls.

Oh, and because almost everyone is a martial artist of some sort, there's a lot of exciting battles and adventures. While the fanfiction naturally runs to romance and porn, there's a large chunk of it that's just straight-up adventure.

After taking a surprise dip in a cursed spring while on a training journey in China, martial artist Ranma Saotome and his father, Genma, aren't quite themselves anymore. Now Ranma turns into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water, and Genma turns into a panda!

Their new forms cause nothing but confusion at the Tendou dojo, where Soun Tendo is waiting to introduce one of his three daughters to Ranma - as his fiancee! Turns out Genma and Soun arranged the match long ago, but Akane and Ranma, aren't exactly crazy about the idea, or each other! Or are they? Watch the gender switching, jealous rages, and martial arts battles unfold all over again!

Fishbaiit’s note: Definitely a favorite of mine! Anything’s that by Rumiko Takahashi is always fun to watch and/or read when you feel like finding something different.

Blorbo Blursday 7/7/22

With thanks again to @athenswrites. This week’s question, again pertaining to Saotome Ranma as he appears in Playing House:

What is your blorbo's/blorbos' family like? Do they have parents and siblings? Or is it more of an adopted/found family time situation? Tell us a little bit about the dynamics in their family!

In the time since coming to the Tendou household, Ranma has definitely come to view it as his home and its members as more or less family. This includes Akane, even if things get complicated there by a throbbing asterisk noting the presence of the whole arranged marriage matter, but Nabiki and Kasumi are, if not sisters per se, definitely part of his extended family to him. Soun intimidates him in the way that any stern patriarch of the girl he is in love withis being forced to marry for the sake of their families would be, although this is undercut by repeated first-hand experience of what a pushover he is when you get down to it.

The spell, of course, has complicated all of this, and oddly it’s done so by making him more aware that this is how he feels to begin with. He was prepared to deal with feeling taken advantage of by Nabiki, because his relationship with her has always been a bit adversarial, but in between the illicit photography and, yes, the blackmail she’s also the member of the household most likely to be straight with him about (certain) things and this has shone through in her response to the whole situation. His dynamic with Kasumi is more awkward than it used to be, just by virtue of Ranma feeling like he’s taken something that matters a lot to Kasumi (even if he didn’t mean to and doesn’t want it) and the fact that Kasumi has become rather more... candid than he’s used to, but she’s also clearly aware of how awkward this is for him and demonstrates a lot of sympathy for his situation.

And as for Akane, well... obviously the thoughts he’s having about her have nothing to do with him and everything to do with the fact that Kasumi wants to get married and so now he feels that way too.

Obviously.

While you might think that Ranma is worried over what his father is going to say when he finds out what’s been going on, the truth is that he’s more resigned to being annoyed by it than anything. He knows better than anyone what a bloviating windbag his father can be and is more than used to ignoring him. He’s a little worried that he won’t accept Ranma’s current circumstances as an excuse and try to force him to continue training at the same pace as before, but if nothing else Akane has proven that she’s ready to step up to defend him when he needs it. Not that he needs it.

If there’s anyone Ranma is gunshy about seeing like this it’s his mother. Not out of fears that she’ll think he’s unmanly - that’s been a settled matter for years now - but...

He’s not in any position to articulate a thought like this, and even if he was he certainly wouldn’t, not to anyone. This is Ranma we’re talking about, even if he’s in a decidedly different headspace than he usually is.

Ranma loves his mother, in the way that only someone who was separated from their mother at a young age and fought tooth and nail to be reunited with her can, but he’s never really been close to his mother. He’s never quite understood her, never had much in common with her, and never really known how to talk to her about much of anything. And he’s not sure if he’s ready to deal with that being different.

30th Anniversary Ranma Challenge Day 11: Favourite Headcanon

I don’t usually have very many headcanons regarding the show itself. But here’s a couple off the top of my head.

I think that Konatsu is a trans woman, or at least genderqueer if she has to consider herself a man. Even if she might say she’s male, she is way too feminine to ever consider changing her personality to match.

Just because Furinkan is such a breeding ground for the weirdest crap doesn’t mean that it’s exclusive to that place alone. I imagine that a lot of weird events happen elsewhere, but because they’re outside of the characters’ purview, it’s not exactly talked about.

I imagine that Soun Tendou probably gets paid helping out the neighbourhood, as has been implied a couple of times. It has been established that he rents the dojo out to people, too. That probably explains why he manages to afford so many repairs.
