In the course of spiralling down an internet rabbit hole today, I found a truly excellent essay about the trials and tribulations of fandom: How To BNF Without Tears, by Walter A. Willis
If you are familiar with the term BNF (Big-Name Fan), you may have heard it in the context of early-aughts fandoms, or some configuration of superwholock. But this article is from 1954!
Please enjoy these excerpts:
Very well, let's consider a day in the life of this wretched Neofan. Brighteyed, the little fellow wakes early, listening for the tread of the postman. His ears are so sensitive to this faint sound that he will leap out of bed, every nerve quivering, when the man is a hundred yards away ….. whereas before he became a fan a whole battery of alarm clocks barely fluttered an eyelid.
It's me, I'm the wretched little fellow refreshing my AO3 inbox, nerves a-quivering
Consider now a day in the life of the BNF. He too is driven from pillow to post, but since he was up to two o'clock in the morning finishing an article he had promised for ten days ago, the postman has to knock twice to waken him. He staggers down the stairs, observing with a sinking feeling that the porch is covered with a layer of various sized envelopes[....]Some of the letters are from his friends, and he puts those in his pocket to be enjoyed later. Some are from self-appointed enemies, and he puts those aside until he feels stronger. The rest are from Neofen. Some of them want subscriptions to his fanzine. Some want information. Some want material for their fanzine. Nearly all of them are rude.
1954 equivalent of "RIP your inbox"
Now, on the way the BNF handles this mail depends whether he shall stay in fandom or retire suffering from chronic disenchantment like so many others[...]So I am going to suggest some rules which you might consider following when you become a BNF. (All that is necessary to become a BNF is to maintain a reasonably energetic standard of fanactivity for approximately two years.)
And then our friend Walter goes on to advise BNFs to "comment on as many first issues [of fanzines] as you can, and always find something to praise," "Always be polite and kind to Neofans," and to take the piss out of yourself: "Humourous attacks on you should be encouraged -- they add to the interest of fandom, rank as egoboo, and might give you something to write about." (Walter also warns on the dangers of attending conventions, and advises that you wear a false beard to maintain anonymity.)
Of course, I had to know: what fandom were these guys in?
So I did a little digging. Walter mentions a "Ken Potter" in his letter. Turns out Ken Potter ran multiple science fiction fanzines through the 1950's and 60's, including Brennschluss, Triumph and Scientifiction.
A scan of Brenschluss, containing such gems as "tho I did once kiss a girl" and "Isn't Fandom romantic!"
Additional glossary for some terms used in Walter's essay:
"Egoboo": A colloquial expression for the pleasure received from public recognition of voluntary work. Originated in science fiction fandom as early as 1947
"Hectoed" fanzine: A method of copying text and illustrations that fell out of fashion after the 1940's. It involves involves making a bed of gelatin, transferring a special carbon ink to the gelatin and then laying on and picking up pieces of paper.
"Faned": Slang for "fan editor," aka the editor of a fandom publication, usually a zine.
#anyways next time someone tells you you're too old for fandom#you know where to direct them#shout out to those ladies in the 70s trading kirk and spock yaoi fanzines#and shout out to these guys in the 50's sending each other hate mail about science fiction fandom beefs

I do love some good misheard lyrics. I just rediscovered the song "Ten O'clock Postman," which someone in my vicinity once overheard as "Tentacle Postman," which led to a couple very entertaining short stories.
I still think fondly of that character.

"MOVING DAY PASSES," Ottawa Citizen. May 2, 1934. Page 5. ---- Difficulty of Securing Vehicles Proves Only Real Hazard of Period ---- AMUSING SIDELIGHTS ---- Push-carts Piled High With Furniture Requisitioned- Victims of Forced Eviction Housed ---- Yesterday saw the peak of the last minute rush on the part of the unemployed to secure dwelling and many thousands of them were successful, according to reports from various quarters. Although trouble had been expected in several wards it did not materialize except in regard to the difficulty in securing trucks and vans.
In Villeray ward hundreds of un-employed families were unable to secure the necessary transportation for the heavy articles of furniture. On many streets furniture was to be seen on the sidewalks, awaiting something in which it could be moved. Aside from this no trouble occurred and police report that only the usual number of routine complaints in connection with moving were received by them. These consisted of lost articles for the most part.
Alderman J. H. Brien of Rosemount ward stated that there had been no trouble throughout the day. Shortly after the dinner hour 10 five-ton trucks belonging to the city were secured to help move those who had been unable to get anything with which to move beforehand. Arrangements were made to keep there on the job right up to this morning. Only two forced evictions. were reported and both families were placed in new quarters.
During the absence of Alderman Joseph Schubert, of St. Louis 1 ward, who is in New York, his secretary handled all problems which arose. He stated that there was remarkably little trouble in view of what had been expected. Most of the families who had to move were successful in obtaining quarters while others made arrangements to stay where they were for a few days longer.
Yesterday many of the unemployed continued to do their own moving particularly where the distance. between the houses was short. Back lanes in the crowded districts showed almost as much activity as the main streets. A survey of the crowded sections of the city showed that there were almost as many push carts as motor trucks being used for moving.
WOMAN IN TEARS. One woman who was pushing a hand cart along Belanger street burst into tears when one wheel struck a rut, throwing half the contents into the street and breaking a glass jar. A postman who was making his deliveries in the district came to her assistance and helped her to right the load and move on her way.
Many of the unemployed have become excellent jugglers judging by the manner in which the small push carts were piled high with household effects. On top of one such load a large plate glass ass mirror was to be seen. Trailing along behind the cart evidently hoping that the mirror would slip were several small boys who were much amused by the appearance of the load and the manoeuvres of the man pushing it.
A heavily loaded truck on St. Zotique street blew a tire on one of the rear wheels yesterday afternoon. The load of furniture was tilted at a precarious angle but the wheel was successfully jacked up and the tire repaired without the contents being spilled.
A team of horses pulling a drav loaded with furniture ran away and struck an electric light pole. at the corner of St. Lawrence boulevard and St. Catherine street, late yesterday afternoon. Household goods were strewn all over the street but no one was injured.
One gang of unemployed men in Villeray ward succeeded in borrowing a wagon but couldn't secure a horse. They loaded the wagon moderately and pushed and pulled the load themselves making a haul of five city blocks.
About 2.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon there were ten moving vans and trucks on Third avenue, in Rosemount, between Masson and Pandurand streets. At the same time, in the same block, four un employed families were moving their effects bodily. Other streets throughout the city presented similar scenes.
PLIGHT OF REPORTER. Figure it out any way way you It's like a tough spot a young local newspaperman has found himself in.
He was rooming on St. Mark street, and the people he was staying with decided, rather abruptly, to move on May 1, taking the roomer with them to a Mackay street home. They warned him about the move, the day before, but being a newspaperman he did not have time to go and see his new abode.
His landlord gave him the new address-but by mistake gave him the wrong one. So when he finished work at an advanced hour yesterday morning to go "home," he found himself at the wrong a dress. A frantic telephone call to his old home brought no response. Faced with the alternative of ringing every door bell on Mackay street at one a.m. the reporter judged discretion the better part of valor and spent the night at hotel.
Yesterday he was still wondering what to do about it - not knowing the firm which moved the family or any other way of finding his new home. Any suggestions?
ONE OF QUIETEST. After having every man in the police department prepared to cope with any possible trouble, Director Fernand Dufresne, head of the Montreal police, stated late yesterday afternoons that yesterday was one of the quietest May Days in the history of Montreal, Only a few odd groups of men who attempted to demonstrate in front of the offices, of the Unemployment Relief Commission, Ontario Street west, had be dispered while the various squares and public parks in the city were kept clear. Police believe that the seizure of over 50.000 Communist circulars by the anti-Communist squad of the local police department, nipped-in-the-bud a monster demonstration over the weekend, which was to have been held on Victoria Square, Viger Square, and Champs do Mars.
Several calls were made to police headquarters by citizens who stated that trouble was brewing in various sections of the city. Large police automobiles and patrol wagons loaded with men were rushed to each scene, but found only the usual moving day arguments among neighbors. Police on font, mounted, motorcycle, and plainclothesmen and detectives patrolled the city streets and squares, and persons at tempting to gather in groups were quickly dispersed.
Deputy Director C. Barnes, of the police department, was personally in charge of the men, while Lieut. J. Enn's, head of the anti-Communist squad, patrolled the various public balls where Communist meeting were to have taken place. Late last night police reported that no arrests had been made.

Памяти Тима Норелла / Remembering Tim Norell
