In Search of the Perfect Foundation? Look No Further!

Temptalia is a great resource if you're looking for a specific type of makeup product and don't know where to start!! They have a list of dupes for different shades and a catalog of makeup swatches and reviews!!

Then this morning I ordered a Shiseido eyeshadow out of left field. It’s because the mac Discothèque that I was going to get sold out overnight, and I searched the Mecca app for silver eyeshadow. Voilà the shiseido one that has been discontinued and put on the Boxing Day sale appeared. So, I got it. I think shiseido packaging and product design is rlly cool and sleek. I would describe the whole brand as a bit left field, which is exactly what I like. It’s like Nars’ coocoo aunt.

And to bring it up to $25 of shippable items I added the Mac amber lights eyeshadow, which is quite warm and I’m hoping it’s the eyeshadow version of Rodeo Drive from Nars.

Then just then, I ordered Isla Bonita from Nars. Which Temptalia (my makeup encyclopaedia) says is a green-tinged white, but which Nars describes as a white gold. So I’m not sure how that will work out.

And before we left, I ordered a few things from Mecca:

So I will need to find room for all of those when I get home. The Nars single shadows will be moving into this new magnetic palette that I’ve calculated can fit 45 of the Nars pans.

Because I already have 25 Nars eyeshadows, then add Stud, maybe the two Thessalonique (depending on what I decide to do with them), New York, Sophia, Ecstasy, Domination, Isla Bonita, you get 30 or 32. Plus the two 🙄circular🙄 Mac pans, that’s the space of 1.5 ea I’d say.

I will say I’m most excited for the shiseido lip glosses because then I will have all of the ones I’ve ever wanted. Maybe I’ll duck in for the magenta one when I get home, but I think I’ll survive without it. Actually I’m not going to think about the magenta one because I’ll fixate on it and it’ll be over.

So far I think I’ve successfully talked myself out of nars outre-mer using the logic that it won’t even look that good on me anyway (all the demos I’ve seen it’s just looked too dark and muddy). Like yes its a nice eyes-catching colour in the palette, but I know I just won’t get the use out of it like I would need. If it turns out to be easy getting things shipped to the hotel on the UK, maybe I will go back on my word and just get it, but for now I’m holding back. I was going to put a photo of outre-mer into the post, but I’ve decided to try to scrub it from my memory. Similar to Hellcat and Zambezi.

I have all the blue eyeshadow I could possibly need in the form of MAC Cobalt and MUFE ME216. Actually, I think ME216 is keeping me from outre-mer the most, because I want to stay loyal to that one as my one and only trusted blue eyeshadow.

Slowly I’m learning that the more you have of something the less you appreciate the thing and the more you crave more to scratch that same psychological itch.

Can I ask you a makeup question? As a fair skin toned girl I’m constantly on the hunt for a good blue red lipstick and I’m forever striking out. I love my Ruby Woo from MAC but it’s not the right tone I’m hunting for. I’ve amassed quite the collection during my hunt. ☺️

Oooh!! Okay! This is some things to think about because there are so many reds!

Do you want a very bold true red? Or do you want orange, pink, blue undertones?

Do you want a deeper or brighter red?

Do you want your lipstick to be bold or sheer?

Do you want it to be matte, glossy, satin, or even metallic?

Most people aren't huge fans of orange based reds (MAC Lady Danger) because it can tend to make your teeth look yellow. Also never think you have to spend a ton of money. While I do prefer MAC and Pat McGrath lipsticks, I think that Milani, L'Oreal (minus that smell), Maybelline, and even ELF have beautiful lip colors.

ALWAYS wear a lipliner. For bold lips it isn't negotiable. Wear a lipliner. If you love Ruby Woo lipstick, check out MAC Russian Red! So pretty. MAC is currently reformulating their lipsticks, so I don't know if that is still available on line, or what their plans are for it. Russian Red still has that blue base to it, but there's a bit more depth. Wear Ruby Woo is SUPER bright. I say Ruby Woo is more for parties or spring time, and Russian Red is more of a winter/fall shade.

I could honestly go on and one with MAC red lipsticks. Lady Bug was my first one. But there's also MAC Red, Cockney, and that's just MAC. With red lipsticks, I do think that matte is the most wearable and long lasting, but of course it will depend on what your needs are.

I have used Runway and Penumbra so far and Penumbra is a very work appropriate duochrome. I will be wearing it a lot. Temptalia says that Event Horizon is 90% similar to Clionadh Kiln which is on the way to me. I look forward to swatching. The most exciting ones to me were Alloy and Forged. I look forward to using them.

Making a list of the Nars single shadows I’m looking for when we go to London. Because there’s a Nars standalone store in Covent Gardens that I’m hoping will have some of the shades in their bottom drawers.

I’ve found Isla Bonita deliverable to Australia online. The Nars website says it’s a white gold but then the Temptalia review says it’s actually a green-tinged white frost finish, so I’m a bit confused. I think it would be pretty anyway, but yeah idk if it’s rlly worthwhile buying it. I’ve been shopping like crazy recently, and I wonder if it’s because I miss my makeup collection and I’m trying to somehow involve myself with makeup from afar.

Im also interested in this Mac silver eyeshadow called « Dicotheque » because silver actually looks nice on me. It’s quite bright and stands out a lot against my skin, but it’s nice. They also have this matte white eyeshadow called « Gesso » which looks interesting. I have a frosted white eyeshadow which I rlly like, but nothing matte.

I do however have a NYX eyeliner pencil which I use as an eyeshadow pencil which is opaque enough to be a full look. It doesn’t blend out very well though, and only lasts if I don’t touch it once I’ve coloured in my whole eyelid. So, yes, I could do with a white eyeshadow. I guess I could use it to blend out other colours too, because I often reach for Nars Biarritz to lighten up darker colours and fade them into my skin tone. Would a white be significantly different to Biarritz to warrant spending $40 on it?

I think I’m reaching a point where I can’t justify my infinite expenditure on makeup. I’m at a difficult halfway point where I’m not yet done with the phase but I can no longer blindly follow my old habits.

In reality, I think I’ve survived this long without a silver sparkly eyeshadow or a matte white, and I haven’t really felt a gap in the collection in their absence. Those $80 would be much better spent on something else, maybe even one of the CR polo shirts I was lamenting not being able to afford…

On the topic of silver eyeshadow, I actually remember a Natasha Denona palette I had with a silver eyeshadow. I put it on a few times but it was just a bit too much. So maybe the MAC Discotheque would be the same? I suppose I could blend it up to my crease and have like a bright one and done silver look. But when have I ever actually « craved » a silver look?

Like rationally I know I don’t even want these Mac shadows. My collection has survived just fine without them. I just want something to want.

If it was Nars Banquise, which is their silver shade, maybe it would be a different story. But it’s Mac. And I don’t want to throw myself into a whole new brand just for some single eyeshadows at $40 each.
