The Virupaksha Temple is located in #Hampi in the Ballari district of #Karnataka, India. It is part of the Group of #Monuments at Hampi, designated as a #UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is dedicated to #LordVirupaksha, a form of Shiva. The temple's history is uninterrupted from about the 7th century. The Virupaksha-Pampa sanctuary existed well before the Vijayanagara capital was located here. Inscriptions referring to Shiva date back to the 9th and 10th centuries. What started as a small shrine grew into a large complex under the Vijayanagara rulers. Evidence indicates there were additions made to the temple in the late Chalukyan and Hoysala periods, though most of the temple buildings are attributed to the Vijayanagar period. The huge temple building was built by Lakkana Dandesha, a chieftain under the ruler Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire. Under the Vijayanagara rulers, in the middle of the 14th century, there began a flowering of native art and culture. When the rulers were defeated by Muslim invaders in the 16th century, most of the wonderful decorative structures and creations were systematically destroyed. The religious sect of Virupaksha-Pampa did not end with the destruction of the city in 1565. Worship there has persisted throughout the years. At the beginning of the 19th century there were major renovations and additions, which included ceiling paintings and the towers of the north and east gopura. #hampi #hampifocus #gopuram #Karnataka #travelkarnataka #lordshiva #virupakshatemple #hampidiaries #shivatemple #mahadeva #templesofkarnataka🙏🙏 #indiantemple #templesofindia #incrediblekarnataka #virupaksha #karnatakafocus #indianarchitecture #archaeology #unesco #unescoworldheritage https://www.instagram.com/p/CmsOfm1Bl8g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

With a heavy heart, we bid adieu to udupi and promise to be back soon. We stayed at hotel anugraha.. Costed 2250 for 2 nights, double occupancy. Fairly decent place to stay, very near to Shri Krishna Math. Packed our bags, saddled up and left around 6 am. Looking forward to the last leg our our journey. #karnatakaphotographers #karnataka_ig #travelkarnataka #explorekarnataka #templesofsouthindia #know_temples #templesofkarnataka #templearchitecture #templesofindia #templephotography #incrediblekarnataka #exploreindia #heritageofindia #indiantemple #hindutemple #ancienttemple #shivatemple #travelindiagram #ancientarchitecture #indiantemplearchitecture #architecturephotos #indianphotos #travelphotos #indianphotographers #murudeshwar #murudeshwartemple #nightphotoshoot #shotononeplus #beautifulindia #wonderfulplaces (at Udupi, Manglore) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQtZvHLnB3F/?utm_medium=tumblr

Close to 1000 years, Chamundeshwari Temple is a famous hill temple in Mysore. The original temple was built during the Hoysalas period while the temple towers were built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 17th century. This temple has a 15 feet bull statue around the 800th of the 1000 steps of the temple. From the 18th century, animal sacrifices have been stopped and are one of the 18 Maha Sakthi Peethas in the country. This Dravidian temple also hosts the deities of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesha. The popular Mahishasura Mardini statue is present in this beautiful temple and the best time to visit this temple is from October to December. People climb to the top of this temple using the 1000 steps the Woodeyar dynasty had constructed, to end all their sins and bad karma. 📸 @runa_nath Follow @indianpanorama Visit www.indianpanorama.in #STravelORIES #chamundeshwaritemple #templetuesday #templesofindia #templesoftamilnadu #templesofsouthindia #templesofkarnataka #secrettemples #indianpanorama #incredibleindia #temples #mysterioustemples #womentravel #travelphotography #travelgram #travelblogger (at Chamundeshwari Temple,Chamunda Hills,Mysore) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ71GWjB-WY/?igshid=1xqvxmaba93cs

Chamundeshwari Temple, Karnataka. At an elevation of 1,005m above sea level, the Chamundeshwari Temple is located on top of the Chamundi Hills about 13 km from the palace city of Mysuru in the state of Karnataka. Locally the temple is known as Naada Devi (ನಾಡ ದೇವಿ), which means State Goddess. It is believed that Goddess Durga slayed the demon king Mahishasura on the top of this hill which was ruled by him. The original shrine is thought to have been built in the 12th century by the rulers of the Hoysala Dynasty, while its tower (pictured) was probably built by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 17th century. #swiggywala #localguides @googlemaps #chamundihills #Chamundeshwari #Karnataka #travelkarnataka #templesofkarnataka🙏🙏 #indiantemple #templesofindia #incrediblekarnataka #karnatakafocus #indianarchitecture #india_undiscovered #thegenuineindia  #lost_heritage #IndianContents #incredibletemples https://www.instagram.com/p/CbxQTMLvFaS/?utm_medium=tumblr

Chennakesava Temple and Nageshwara Temple in Mosale, Karnataka Sudha G. wrote : "Have you come to see the temples?" a soft voice enquires. "Yes," say @radzzie and I. "I'm the Chennakeshava Temple priest's wife. Let me get the keys and open up the temple for you, she says." "What about the Nageshwara temple?" we enquire. "That temple has a different priest and he will be here shortly. Both temples are different you see," she explains. And that's why I have considered the two temples I'm talking about today as separate structures even though they are part of the same complex. From the outside, both temples are almost the same and practically indistinguishable from each other. Both the Chennakeshava and Nageshwara are ekakuta or single-shrined temples, with elaborately carved exteriors and vimanas. Some of the sculptures seen at the two temples, like Sadashiva, are unique in the sense that I did not these sculptues in any of the other Hoysala temples I visited during the trip. ○○The Unsung Hero○○ . . . Living in the land of tales and folklore, it's hard not to grow up idolizing the mythical creatures in them. Although, Hanuman is a favorite among most of us, today we speak of an unsung hero. The mighty Garuda. Whilst we all know of him as the vehicle mount (vahana) of Lord Vishnu, there are tales of his conquests aplenty unknown to us. Be it his quest to fetch the 'Amrit' (elixir of immortality), of how he got his name, why he is the king of the birds or why he was the chosen one to adorn Vishnu's flagstaff. As is a common practice, you always find a statue related to the God to whom the temple is dedicated at it's entrance. One will find this statue at the entrance of Chennakesava temple, Belur. Garuda(Tarkshya/Vynateya) is a legend not just in Hindu, but also in Buddhist and Jain mythology. . . --- #OurShortTale: My first encounter with Garuda began on a sunny day somewhere in the 90s as I chanced upon a picture of him in my granny's treasure trove. A curious kid that I was, it did not take much effort to persuade my grandmum to get me acquianted with this quirky bird-man. I must confess my granny is a master story teller. She spun a tale so vivid, I was spellbound and fascinated with this mythical being beyond repair. I still am! #incredibleindia #indiatravel #india #karnataka #karnatakatourism #belur #garuda #eagle #stonetemple #stonestatue #birdman #art #mythology #indianmythology #indianmyth #storiesuntold #storiesofindia #templesofindia #templesofkarnataka #guardian #lordvishnu https://www.instagram.com/p/BnWGNmOAkm4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10glt9uhhqa21
