Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: RRR (2022, Telugu), dir. S.S. RAJAMOULI
RRR is a historical fantasy action drama that follows Bheem (NTR Jr), a Gond warrior who is in search of a Gond girl who was taken away from their home, and Ram (Ram Charan), the British Army officer assigned to catch him. Ram and Bheem meet under false identities and quickly grow closer, but everything is thrown into chaos once the truth is revealed and Ram is forced to choose between his ambitions and his attachment to Bheem.
Long before any white person had ever heard of RRR, queer Indians were cautiously optimistic that there would be something for us in this movie. There was the song Dosti, which felt more romantic than the average song about friendship; Bheem's intense declaration toward Ram in the trailer; Rajamouli explaining that there is no boy-girl romantic song (a staple of masala Indian cinema in any language) because "the romance angle is between these two guys only...bromance...they are the heroes, they are the hero and heroine, and they are the hero and villain"; the lead actors repeatedly questioning interviewers who referred to Jenny and Seetha as Bheem and Ram's love interests; and the writer, V. Vijayendra Prasad, being a huge fan of Salim-Javed movies, particularly Sholay, whose homosocial pairing has been read as queer by queer Indians for decades.
The movie itself gave us more than we could have hoped for from a project made on such a huge scale. Ram and Bheem mimic many of the "hero and heroine" pairings in so many masala movies, doing everything from the "slow-mo staring" for the first meeting, to getting a whole montage song for the progression of their bond, to dressing each other up, to dancing together at a party, to carrying each other, to rescuing each other.
The final rescue scene is perhaps the most telling, as it twists a well-known myth from the Ramayana by putting Ram and Bheem in the position of heroine and hero. It is not Hanuman who tells Rama where to find Sita in Lanka, but instead Seetha who tells Bheem where to find Ram. Bheem, upon finding him, promises to get him out 'even if [he has] to burn this Lanka down to do it'--then promptly carries him on his shoulders the way Hanuman carried Rama, to do away with any suspicions from homophobic audiences.
Those homophobic audiences still made their complaints--a glance at the oldest comments on any clip or behind the scenes video for RRR will make that clear--but they were drowned out by the many fans of the movie. Ultimately, like with any coded movie, the interpretation is up to the individual, but it is undeniable that a number of queer Indians felt that there was a romantic bond between Ram and Bheem. To dismiss that would do a disservice to the many queer people who have, are, and always will work quietly behind the scenes to write our stories, even if they can never say so directly.

I recently watched Salaar!
It was recommended by Netflix and I decided to give it a try. I didn't think I would like the movie though. It's not like I don't enjoy dystopian stories or action movies. But the movies involving mindless violence, hypermasculinity without any proper story and context put me off.
But I was intrigued by the intro and the dynamics between Deva and Varadha. Deva held a live wire to get Varadha's nose-ring back. In the next scene Varadha protected Deva and his mother by giving up his territory. And not just any territory, but his biggest territory. It showed the regard both of them hold for each other. Then the whole 'Salaar' lore is narrated by Baba and Varadha calling Deva, 'his Salaar'. I couldn't wait to watch more of their interactions.
Hence, you all can imagine my disappointment when the next scene wasn't about them, but the story of an Odia movie named 'Agastya'. I had watched it years ago and knew that it was a remake of a Kannada movie. I haven't watched the original movie though.
I persisted through the first half of the movie with a hope of seeing Deva and Varadha onscreen again. Tbh, the first half was not that bad with the mystery behind Amna and Deva's behaviour, the 'Prathi Gaadhalo' song and Radha Rama-Obulamma co-dependent relationship.
And I don't have words to describe the second half of the movie. I can only say, I am completely obsessed with 'Deva and Varadha'.
I am not someone who's into homoerotic movies/books. Simply because, I have a history crushing on fictional characters and love to imagine myself in place of the heroines. Or if I don't like the heroine's character, I imagine a new story with an OC.
But something about the relationship of these two characters, has me hooked.
I have already watched the movie in Telugu, Hindi and now watching it in English. I think I am going to watch it in all languages. The only movie I had watched in all languages was 'Bahubali 1 & 2.' I will definitely not stop until I have analysed each and every scene, character and relationship.
I will definitely be disappointed if in the second part, they will make Aadhya a love interest of Deva. I know, Indian Cinema hasn't evolved enough to show 'Deva and Varadha' as a couple. But showing their happy ending with 'legendary atoot dosti' is enough for me. But I can never imagine Deva choosing Aadhya over Varadha. That would be an offence.
I can't wait for the second part to be released. And do tag me when you all write fanfictions/posts on 'Salaar'.

'Cause we need Indian Dark Academia (though this is more chaotic academia)
*Imagine sitting by window with a good book on Indian myths (krishna? ramayan?) ad draped in a good shawl while its raining outside
*Imagine browsing through you history and past on a wooden bench that belonged to your grandfather with your laptop and loads of old writings from your grandfather's notes wearing a woolen sweater
*Imagine getting annoyed by your uniform so yu try different haristyles and stickers(tikli) each time.
*Imagine getting tea in those tea cups from the tiny tea shop and going to a part watching kids play badminton and you can smell the dried leaves.
*Imagine wearing payal and long skirt with desi style blouse and having bangles along with a bag made from home as you go to a library but you need to be over 18 to borrow so you sit there and finish reading and its midnight by the time you are done so you run back home with messy notes and pen marks on your face.
*Imagine wanting to learn sanskrit or prakrit but hindi or telugu or your own mother tongue is enough of a headache as it is and your parents tell you to get good marks in those first so you pretend like you are learning sanskrit or prakrit while practicing for your tests.
*Imagine you have an exam tomorrow so you stay up till midnight thinking and dreaming of going to all these western dark academia themes and then think 'imagine if nalanda still existed' and an impromptu searching up which ends past midnight.
*Imagine you have strict parents so you write your boyfriend secrets letters since you can't meet him while trying to feel like a class heroine and behave pretentiously all day (bonus: parents get mad because you are searching for dark academia cloths but find none and end up with all these mismatched go on nothing ones)
*Imagine going to streetside stores and buying small trinklets from there because walking or going to shops isn't allowed all that much in your society
*Imagine going to the same old one local museum (for me Salar Jung ) so many times you can be appointed a tour guide at this point (bonus:making a list of all the other museums you wish and swear to yourself you will go to when you grow up and if lucky before)

Damn it . . . RRR Headcanons here I go
Decided to finally make some head canons about RRR following the movie plotline kinda but being man enough to Queerify Ram and Bheem lets go.
Head canon No.1
Ram calls Bheem Diamond in English after the scene when Ram is introduced to bheem's fake family in RRR and Ram remembers his own family specifically his brother like in the movie but instead of making it brotherly I'll make it like Bheem seems like the first family he had outside of Sita and his Babai all his colleagues in the Police force were people he used but in that moment when he saw Bheem eating with his left hand and looking at Ram like that he knew that Bheem was different he was someone he'd grow to cherish like a Diamond. (I opted out of gold for some reason didn't like the sound of it). When Bheem asks Ram what Diamond means Ram lies and says it means brother in english like how Bheem calls Ram bhaiyya which means brother. Ram doesn't know why he lies he thinks its kinda funny Bheem doesn't know what it means an inside joke if you will. And since then Ram feels like his heart breaks a bit more when Bheem keeps calling him Bhaiyya he's supposed to feel like family but Bheem calling Ram Bhaiyya seems wrong for some reason. (he's realizing his feelings but plays it off like he's not used to affection from anyone else than his Babai and Sita).
I got this idea from an old movie I watched called Manam where the hero tells the heroine often that he loves her in english but she doesn't know english so she asks what it means and the hero lies saying it means to give something like a pen, pencil, paper etc. She doesn't find out what the saying "I love you" means till their wedding night.
Head canon No.2
Whenever Ram and Bheem hang out for what ever reasons after the whole um . . . Bheem getting whipped thing and the RRR plotline in general. As Bheem sleeps peacefully on Ram's bed because Ram insists looking as if he might actually break down if Bheem doesn't take the bed allowing Ram to sleep on the floor Ram often watches Bheem sleep (In a 'brotherly' way of course). His gaze drifts to Bheem's legs remembering the whippings Ram himself conducted on Bheem and feels intense sadness and often takes blessing from Bheem by putting a hand on Bheem's foot and then on his forehead its usually a blessing taken from Elders, husbands (take that as you will) or god. Ram believes Bheem to be someone blessed or divine because of how Bheem forgave Ram even after Ram betrayed Bheem in such a cruel way and Bheem still came back to aid Ram.
This head canon was also loosely inspired by another telugu movie I watched called Majilli where the heroine having a crush on the hero takes blessing from hero when he isn't looking because she wants to marry him this acknowledges her respect for him and they end up do getting married.
Head canon No.3
Ram felt like before it was his duty to marry Sita his mother wished for that and Sita was one of Ram's only family left and he fully intended on marrying Sita to fill that request to bond them eternally through marriage in order to get a piece of his family back in a way. But after Bheem was introduced into his life after Bheem saved him from his hanging he began pushing the idea of marrying Sita back and back trying to make excuses and why he would have to delay the marriage like defeating the British and whatnot. Sita also had a similar idea in mind but it wasn't as strong as Ram's sense of duty she'd actually be the one to say
"Baava I know marrying you is something Aunt (Ram's mother) wanted but I don't feel you need to keep the obligation anymore I am content just being your blood related family, your support system, your friend, I don't think it is my love is what drives you anymore."
Sita suspects that Ram was changed by Bheem somehow not suspecting romantic feelings because Homophobia was definitely a thing back then but Hell their Mythological freedom fighters they can be Gay.
This headcanon wasn't inspired by any movie in particular just the general concept of Duty which is very important in Hindu culture and I wanted to add this to make Ram a bit more complex thats it.
____________________________________________________________
I will make a part 2 later if people request it. Definitely gonna add something to the 1st head canon. But for now I'm tired so if you want some more headcanons or have some ideas tell me in the comments

Price: [price_with_discount] (as of [price_update_date] - Details) [ad_1] Hailed as the first pan-Indian female superstar in an era which literally offered actresses crumbs, Sridevi tamed Hindi cinema like no other. Beginning her affair with the camera when she was four, this doe-eyed beauty conquered Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada industries with performances etched in gold. Taking Hindi cinema by storm with Himmatwala in 1983, Sridevi emerged as one of the most iconic screen goddesses of India, playing characters that went on to become cultural touchstones. A supreme artiste who had mastered all the nine rasas, her comedy was peerless, her dances legendary, her histrionics awe-inspiring and her life a study in contrast, electric on screen, strangely reticent off it. Besides reigning as queen bee for the longest spell among Hindi heroines, she also remains the only actress who was No.1 in Tamil and Telugu cinema as well. Such was Sridevi's megastardom that she emerged as the 'hero' at the box office, towering above her male co-actors. Challenging patriarchy in Bollywood like no other, she not only exalted the status of the Hindi film heroine but also empowered a whole generation of audiences. After a hiatus of fifteen years, she shattered the rules again by becoming the only Bollywood diva to make a triumphant comeback in 2012 with the globally acclaimed English Vinglish. If her life played out forever in the limelight, so did her sudden demise in 2018. Charting five decades of her larger-than-life magic, this book celebrates both the phenomenon and the person Sridevi was. This is her journey from child star to one of our greatest movie luminaries who forever changed the narrative of Indian cinema. Sharwanand’s film to be a blood-fest
Recently, a film in the combination of actor Sharwanand and director Sampath Nandi was announced. The film is apparently going to be a high-voltage violent one.
As per the makers, a huge set spreading over 15 acres has been erected in Hyderabad for the upcoming schedule. Art Director Kiran Kumar Manne designed the set. The story of the film takes place in a village bordering Telangana and Maharashtra. And the entire story unfolds in the 1960s.
To be released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, this one has music by Bheems Ceciroleo of ‘Balagam’ and ‘Dhamaka’ fame.
Bankrolled by KK Radha Mohan of Sri Sathya Sai Arts, the untitled film is touted to be a blood-fest of sorts. The film will also explore the “unexplored times of history”. The ‘Shatamanam Bhavati’ actor is doing an action drama of this sort for the first time. A threat factor is that Sampath Nandi is well past his time. So, this one will be either another ‘Maha Samudram’, or, by stroke of luck, a surprise hit.
Sharwanand’s recent theatrical release is ‘Manamey’, directed by Sriram Adittya. Krithi Shetty was its heroine.
