Jawan and the visual object of desire

Rewatched Jawan last night, and it was just as much fun as the first time.

One thing I noticed in particular on the rewatch: the way the "beauty" shots are handled is fascinating. You know the kind of thing -- an extreme close-up of a smouldering eye, an earlobe with an earring, slightly opened lips, the camera lingering on the décolletage.

Do you know who didn't get those close-ups in Jawan?

Any of the women.

Do you know who got those close-ups multiple times?

Both Azad and Vikram.

You might think that isn't remarkable - the male body often is an object of desire in action films, with all the gleaming muscles and whatnot, but it's usually paired with an overt objectification of the women too. In Jawan, they said fuck it, and just decided to make SRK play both.

I know Atlee said that the movie was a love letter to Shah Rukh Khan, but when he said it I thought it was one of those respectful semi-jokes that people spout during PR. It really wasn't though. The camera basically makes love to SRK non-stop.

I can't actually think of another movie that positions the male lead as both the masculine ideal and the object of feminine beauty in the same frame that way. It's really quite something, but it certainly explains some of the response, I think. It's very effective.

Vikram Rathore works so well like I get it also I don't get it.

He's strict and has charm. Sure. He was a soldier and loved his wife. And then goes against the bad guy and ends up presumed dead.

And when he returns there's this nonchalance about him. Like he's so chill with his earphones and casually just killing people. Lighting up cigar with sparks (I can't light up incense sticks with full burning matchsticks sometimes). Pretty cool with having a full grown son that is doing dangerous shit.

Like all round chill guy.

And then he remembers. And he howls and bawls and my heart just breaks for him. He has lost so much and he didn't even know it. What could have been more tragic than that.

And he's so funny. Sometimes unintentionally. But his comic timing was perfect.

Abort that. He was perfect.
