Fish List
I love fish so much. I have only been thinking about fish. Here is a list of my favorite fish in no particular order, with facts and random commentary sprinkled in between.
Copper Rockfish
If someone asks me what my favorite fish is, I'll say Copper Rockfish. It was the first fish I ever caught (and had to put back, since Rockfish are endangered), but genuinely I just think they look really neat. They're my favorite out of all of the Rockfish species.
2. Quillback Rockfish
Though Copper Rockfish are my favorite Rockfish, I'll also shoutout Quillback. I really like how their spines are blue, and standout really well against the yellow and black. All Rockfish are venomous (to my understanding), but I've always found these ones to be the most intimidating if only because the spines are so much bigger than the other subspecies.
3. Sockeye Salmon (spawning)
For those who don't know, salmon spawning is when salmon return to their birthplace (freshwater) to lay eggs and die, and they also change appearance. Pre-spawning, while they are in saltwater, all the different subspecies pretty much look the same: silver and lumpy, with only minor differences between them. When spawning, they all turn more green and red and become more distinct from one another. I've always liked Sockeye the most, with their green heads and bright red bodies, and the shape of their heads/mouths. I think it's really an iconic look.
4. Flounder
I love flounder just because they look stupid. Fun fact: they don't actually start flat. They're born looking like "normal" fish, with one eye on each side of the head, but as they grow the face shifts onto the top and they flatten to better blend in with the sea floor. Imagine hitting puberty and you turn into Flat Stanley lmao.
5. Cabezon
Cabezon, like Rockfish, have venomous spines. Also their meat is blue until you cook it, where it turns white, which I think is neat. Usually, they reside really deep in the ocean, but in fall and winter they come more into the shallows to make nests and lay eggs. The males are left behind to guard them, so this is the best time to catch one if you don't want to go out on a boat, and also don't want to worry about catching a female. I've never eaten one, but my dad says that they have a texture more similar to chicken.
6. Betta
Pretty basic species of domestic fish, but I still really like them. I had a red and blue male as a kid named Spike. Bettas are usually surface/top fish, but Spike liked to go to the bottom to feed with the Emerald Corydoras I had, and sleep on the moss ball (like it was a little bed). He had a surprising amount of personality for a fish.
7. Emerald Corydora
Corydoras are basically just little freshwater catfish. They like to be in groups, so you have to have at least five if you want to have them at all. I had Emerald Corydoras growing up, and I loved watching them spend all day picking at the sand with their little whiskers for food. They remind me of cows.
8. Panda Corydora
Panda Corydoras are also really neat. I like how shiny they can be, I think it makes them look like little Pokémon.
9. Albino Corydora
Albino Corydoras are cool, especially in comparison to the other species. I think they all look like little old men.
10. Koi
Another kind of basic fish, but they're still cool and I want to point them out. They can get really big if they're not kept in a small enclosure (Domestic Koi can get between 12 and 15 inches, Japanese Koi between 22 and 26, and Jumbo Koi between 34 and 36).
11. Pufferfish
Like flounders, they also look stupid and it amuses me endlessly. They have these two front teeth for breaking into snail shells and slurping them out. I remember there was this really big one at the fish store I used to go to (nearly identical to the one pictured on the left) that would follow your finger if you dragged it across the glass, all the while with that big-ass stupid smile on it's face. They're just so full of whimsy.
12. Telescope Goldfish
Never owned them but I think they're really neat. "Awooga!!" ahh fish. What are they goggling at smh.

Probably ironic asking someone with a goldfish as an avatar, but are fancy goldfish unethical? Because some of the breeds have no dorsal fin and, idk, isn't a dorsal fin important for a fish? Also those telescope-eyes look kind of awkward and uncomfortable, and even more those bubble-eyes that have weird sacs growing from their faces that seem to obscure their vision. It just seems cruel sometimes.
fancy goldfish like moors and orandas have existed for hundreds of years, and their body issues don't cause actual health problems like say a pug or flat-faced cat does.
the real issue is keeping them with other types of goldfish that can easily outcompete them for food or bully them, so as long as you have them in groups with only their own kind they're allowed to move at their own pace and do whatever and they're fine.
NOTE: there are a few newer fancy goldfish breeds like pearlscales that DO have health issues, but the ancient weirdo breeds are okay.

ɢɪᴠᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ᴛᴀᴋᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ʜᴏᴡ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ
…the tide goes in, the tide goes out, featuring goldfish!reader x cliffbythesea!matt.
Matt watches the seafoam from the library window, his headphones on but the music low. He’s supposed to be studying, but his mind drifts…to the way she smiled at him in the car yesterday, warm like the morning sun.
His brothers always tell him he’s a creature of habit. He drinks the same brand of apple juice every morning, swims the same stretch of ocean every evening, zones out in class at the same intervals every day. Maybe that’s why the telescope in his room has shifted from the ships at sea to the phases of the moon.
It’s fine. He likes the predictability of things.
But she doesn’t fit into a cycle. Not exactly. She’s more like an orbit, slipping in and out of his days at odd, unpredictable moments—always returning, always catching him off guard. Loud and bubbly, disturbing his peace and serenity.
Like a fish, he thinks suddenly.
The way she moves, darting between places, her energy uncontainable. The way she catches the light in her hair, her eyes. The way she never lingers in one place too long, but always comes back.
He’s startled by a book dropping onto the table in front of him. He looks up.
There she is, grinning winsomely. “Hi Matt,” she chirps, plopping into the seat opposite him, leaning her elbows on the table. “What are you listening to?”
Matt hesitates before sliding his headphones off. “Uh, Mac Miller,” he says. “Kind of a quiet day thing.”
“Nice,” she hums, tucking her legs onto the chair. She’s already flipping through a novel she brought, something with a pastel cover and dog-eared pages. “I like this time of day best. It makes me feel like I’m in a movie.”
Matt quirks his eyebrow. “What kind of movie?”
She considers, making a low hum again. “Something nostalgic. Like Before Sunrise but more magical.”
“Magic?”
She giggles, a pretty tinkling sound. “The potential of a new day is magical. Don’t you think so?”
He should’ve known she’d say something like that.
And maybe it’s the lighting, or the way she’s beaming at him, but the thought slips out before he can stop it…
“Can I call you Goldie, Y/n?”
She blinks. Then she grins, like he’s given her a gift. “Of course you can, Matt.”
The librarian glares at them, and Goldie presses a finger to her lips, still smiling. Matt shakes his head, but there’s something light in his chest now, something he can’t quite name.
The weeks pass like tide cycles. Ebbing, flowing, inescapable.
They keep meeting like this, like clockwork. The library. The grocery store. The beach.
She leaves oranges in his locker sometimes. “For the juice,” Goldie tells him brightly. He doesn’t even mention that he’s more of an apple juice guy.
He brings some of his CDs to his car, because he’s too nervous to invite her over yet. “This is essential listening,” he tells her, deadpan. She takes him at his word, nodding solemnly.
Somewhere in between the walking, the half-held conversations, the comfortable silences, Matt realises something.
She’s part of his routine now.
And maybe that should scare him, but it doesn’t.
Because when he looks at her, he gets the same feeling he did as a kid, cradling something small and alive in his hands.
Like he’s found something extraordinary. Like he’s been given something he’s meant to protect.
creds to @bernardsbendystraws for the dividers🫶🏻

I found a new (to me--it's actually quite old!) heartwarming collection of cute, collection of fables/fairy tale-esque children's stories anime, Fukuyama Gekijou: Natsu no Himitsu [Fukuyama Theater: Summer Secret]--I found it via Pinterest because look at this adorably sweet mermaid design!!!
It's by one of my favourite artists ever, Fukuyama Keiko, who painted those touching scenes used for the end of Pikachu's Summer Vacation (yup, the first Pikachu pre-movie short!) and a lot of old Pokemon postcards! Osamu Tezuka fans will also know her as the artist of the Melmo-chan reboot manga! It's where this super cute bunny came from!!! I used to mistake it as something from Chibi Maruko-chan! It used to make the rounds on tumblr a lot.
The intro/narrative frame of little mice reading stories gives me the same so-heartwarming-it-makes-me-teary nostalgic feeling as Maple Town. (Side-note: so many punny references to Fukuyama-sensei's name everywhere!)
The rabbits' story is just bunny propoganda, poor wolf!! He's as pitiful as Tom! But I am very amused at the catchy song just trying to get kids to eat the veggies. See, the wolf is ugly because he hated carrots, but the bunnies are smart, because they love carrots, fff.
The longest story is a silly, Flintstones-esque story about cavemen living among dinosaurs, namely focusing on an aspiring artist (Henoheno), trying hard to make it big, supported by his friend (later wife ♡) Pink and dinosaur friend Shiro (Shiro also ends up a mom to many, many little dinos, but the father amusingly isn't shown, Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Short, pfft.) Also, there's a famous established artist called (Moheji.) Yes, his and the lead's names are puns on the henohenomoheji doodle. As you can tell by the disclaimer, you are not to take this anachronistic story too seriously, it's just a sweet, funny, uplifting little story!
This little punk in the End of Semester Cleaning Contest story is very funny. Cute story. I did worry it'd take a dark turn when he fell down the stairs (they even had him wonder if maybe he died whe he fell), but no, it ended nicely... even if it's a little bittersweet.
There's some shorter stories that are mostly songs (another one about rabbits sung by a kindergartener and one song about yearning for love starring a little black dog named Kuro who does find a home!), and the last story is easily my other favourite after the mermaid story, and I'm so glad it was a longer one too... it's a very poignant story.
The Origami Princess is a little like Thumbelina, but very Japanese. A little girl, with her mother's help, makes an origami princess, but before she could go to the beach, she falls sick, so sends the princess in her place, floating her on a boat-shaped leaf down the river...
The princess is amazed by the beauty of the world and befriends a telescope goldfish (Kinguro), who was accidentally flushed while his tank was being cleaned, and he aids her as she seeks the sea, even as he warns her of the danger...
There's a dignity and grace in this story that's very beautiful.
(Also, tanuki statue spotted!)

Cabins decoration
When we look at cabins on museum ships today, we see either very plain cabins or quite decorative cabins. Generally, the gunroom and cockpit were kept very simple, unless their occupants took the decoration into their own hands and made it nice. The wardroom, on the other hand, could have painted canavases as cabin dividers, a table with a ceiling and even a fancy carpet. By the beginning of the 18th century, however, captains and admirals' cabins were as ornate as their ships themselves.
The rather simple Admiral’s cabin aboard HMS Victory, by graceewhite
Lined with the finest persian carpets, porcelain plant pots or even fish pots (a kind of aquarium, that is, a porcelain pot with water and goldfish in it), paintings, wood carvings, curtains, candelabra, tapestries made of canvas and even marble sculptures. However, as this was a great danger when the ship was attacked and the interior could be thrown through the ship, these things were banned until 1719. And one should also have the focus on the service and not be distracted by luxury. However, it was still allowed to have a carpet and curtains. everything else was then rather small things like small paintings, scrimshaws, weapons and telescopes. In other words, all the things that could be quickly grabbed and put away. In the end, one could say that the decorations were more simple and elegant.
