Thinking about the fact that I come from a family of highly educated people and was raised by them with certain expectations for what my future was going to be like, which I internalized and it ultimately fucked me up so hard and is still fucking me up to this day.
I was raised to believe that being smart is the most important thing for a person to be and by extension well-educated.
I had no doubts in my mind at all throughout my entire childhood and the majority of my adolescence that I was going to go to college and then to graduate school at a well-respected university or universities. I was going to have a successful career as some sort of scholar or artist. This wasn't something my family so much encouraged as simply expected. It wasn't a big achievement to strive for. It was the bar.
And there I was, this quiet, hyperlexic child, who took herself so fucking seriously. What reason could anyone, including me, have to doubt that I would meet expectations? I had ambitions after I hit puberty. I was going to go to college at University of Michigan and then become a Rhodes Scholar and go to Oxford for graduate school. I was going to be a musician. I was going to be an anthropologist. I was going to be a translator.
I had to adjust my expectations when I realized I was mentally ill and I would never be able to get the grades I needed to achieve my dreams. I settled for going to the shitty university my dad taught at because it was cheap and there were basically no entry requirements, but at least I could hold onto the unnecessary pride of going to a state university.
There, I got better grades, and I decided I was going to be a linguist and do grad school at U of M, thus bringing me back in alignment with my expectations. I was going to study abroad in Munich for a year to complete my German minor, and I was going to be a worldly person who had finally gotten away from her shitty family and started living her best life.
But I had adjust my expectations again when I learned what that field is really like and received absolutely no help from my family in trying to get into the Munich program and thus never did it. In fact, my father heavily discouraged me, probably because he hated the idea of not being able to control me. I struggled to complete my BA, between feeling like I was too stupid and mentally ill to go to grad school in linguistics and life throwing me a series of really awful curveballs. I just barely squeaked by at one semester beyond the expected four years. I started to apply to grad school for Creative Writing, because that's something I always loved and it would allow me to be an academic like the rest of my family without the pressure of scholarship. Alas, my grandfather's sudden death made completing the application impossible, so I waited a year and tried again.
Across two years, I applied to three different schools, including U of M (would have applied to more but woof those application fees), and every single one rejected me. So there I am, a sub shop employee with a BA in a "useless" field, my expectations utterly shattered, and I haven't got a fucking clue what to do with my life. Oh, and the pandemic hit shortly thereafter, so I had to quit my job over safety concerns. Got a menial office job for a while. Quit that one over safety concerns too. Made the insane decision to get an online TEFL certification that proved useless. By the standard of the expectations of my family, which I internalized, I am an abject failure.
The real kicker is that I've finally gotten a job as a teacher (well, tutor, but still), but I'm realizing that I may not be cut out for it. I may know the subject matter and have noble intentions, but I lack some very key skills. I've spent my whole life being taught to sit down and shut up and mind my own business. I'm too quiet and awkward and non-confrontational to be an authority figure. I've spent most of my life surrounded by academics and trying to keep up with smarter people with bigger vocabularies, leaving me as someone who feels stupid all the time, but ends up being incomprehensible to her students a lot because her idea of what counts as simple vocabulary is far beyond their understanding. How am I supposed to teach grade schoolers to read when I have a hard time even talking to them in a way they can understand?
And I got people asking me if I'm planning to go to grad school and get a teaching certification. Fucking no, y'all. It's time for me to accept being a complete failure and stop make struggling attempts at being an academic. The goal posts have been moved so far back, they are against the wall, facing a firing squad, and I have to find a way to process that shame without making it worse.
And after all of that, after chipping away at my hopes and dreams until there's nothing left but a sense that I've been conned my whole life, what am I to do? To borrow from gaming: I picked a class I don't have good enough stats for. I trained to be a wizard, and in my heart I want to be a bard, but I'm really just a shitty sorcerer.
My family has no interest in discussing my future anymore, and any suggestions I have about trying to just pursue writing or voice acting because I have nothing left to lose are generally met with something along the lines of "you and 10,000 other people" or just straight up "yeah, good luck with that". Cool. Love to have the support of my family in these trying times. Love to feel like I'm totally useless and have no potential.

six sentence sunday: 5 may 2024
i've been spending too long thinking about my tefl assignment and not enough time actually doing it and like i already knew i'd need to buy the extension bc i've never done anything self-paced like this, or anything comparable was a project where i already knew how long it would take so i could accurate pace myself throughout the semester and anything about spending money gives me *~acid reflux~*
i also didn't write much, but here's a little bit
A little more water trinkled in and I took another mouthful. Jesse sighed when we didn’t answer and melted further into the dirt. He was too tired to keep bugging us.
“How’s your stitches?” I was looking at the puffed-up skin from the corner of my eye. I didn’t want Lukas to know I was looking, as though my brother knowing I don’t want him to bleed out would be too honest for him to know.

quick academic life update
After a tumultuous few months I have decided not to finish my final year of college, and instead I am currently seeking an exit cert
This means I will be leaving college with a BA in Humanities rather than a BA Hons as I was originally enrolled for
In the meantime I have secured an extension for my TEFL course and will be finishing it in the next few months, which means I can hopefully begin looking for a job teaching English soon
It's been a stressful year for me academically (and personally but I won't get into that) but I wanted to be transparent about my academic career since this is, after all, my dark academia blog. I also wanted to share because everyone's journey through school/college/university is different and sometimes it can be messy and unpredictable. I'm already feeling much better now though, and I'm looking forward to the future again.
Thank you all for still being here - Em

I have been watching TLOVM with my brother and I AM SO FILLED WITH D&D INSPIRATION so some details about Fannar's D&D verse here
Fannar is a tiefling druid, largely reclusive and often shunned by other people due to his heritage. He is plagued by the winds speaking to him in an unknown language, urging him to wander; he is trying his best to settle down and create a sacred land for himself, but the winds always seem to find him again.
Fannar is a tefling druid (in my actual campaign he uses the virtue name Heimi ("Home") - ofc bc, Fannar Heimisson haha. I play 3.5 rather than 5e incase anything is 3.5 specific here o(--(
As a child, Fannar would sit out in the highlands filling book after book with the stories he could hear carried on the wind. He accumulated dozens of notebooks filled with stories - of adventure, loss, greed, and everything in between. He took to the outdoors mainly as whatever voices he thought he could hear in the wind provided company he was otherwise lacking in his life.
His mother was a tiefling, his father a human - but upon learning that tieflings breed true and that his son would be born as a tiefling, his father abandoned them. And so, Fannar grew up with only his mother, though they were both treated coldly in the predominantly human society in which they lived.
With time, he realized that although he wasn’t sure which way the winds would blow, they would always find their way back to him. As the years passed, he was able to gain some control of them, and the more time he spent in nature, devoting himself to connecting with the outdoors, the more he was able to harness its power.
It came with a drawback, though - as his connection to the land increased, he began to experience physical pain as it was exploited for more and more resources. It primarily affected his chest, where scars would form like roots of trees and he’d feel he was choking on ash.
Despite these pains, Fannar has a strong constitution: braced by the cold and the forceful winds.
Nature is wild, and it can be harsh and unforgiving: Fannar can be fiery in his desire to protect his land. He would do anything for the nature that he knows as his home, to the point of being self-sacrificial. He feels little connection to other people, but spares no mercy for those who treat the land - and by extension, him - with malice.
This stirred in him a fierce drive to protect the nature around him, and it is what spurred him to set out as an adventurer. He believes that the winds will lead him where he needs to go, to learn how best to protect the land he loves so dearly.
Fannar's decision to leave his mother and his hometown was not an easy one, as - despite the poor treatment they faced living in the town - she was really the only person he had. But as he got older and his connection to nature grew, he found that the longer he spent in the town, the more his body ached. Fannar could not understand why the pain would only subside as he stepped out into nature, but as the pain grew it became clear there was no way he could remain in any town.
He was startled to one day meet a man on his travels that was speaking wind-whispers. The man spoke of The Shalm, and Fannar is sure that he did not imagine the fleeting look of understanding as he explained the mysterious pains he so often felt. Before they could part, Fannar asked about the language he spoke: druidic. It was then he realised the path he was to follow.
He rushed home to put his books into safekeeping and prepare himself, and then he left to see where the winds would take him.

jason gideon: where would you want to live in the future?alex blake: do you wear makeup?unsub: have you ever been arrested? if not, what do you think you’d be arrested for?
Gideon: I'm the most boring person and don't know if I could ever move away from the UK, mostly because I wouldn't want to leave my mum. I've thought about being a TEFL teacher, or even just an English teacher, in Asia. But I don't know if I could ever actually move that far away, even though I think it would be amazing.
Blake: I do wear make up. I have an extensive, and excessive, eyeshadow collection that I almost never get to make use of anymore. Honestly, no one who isn't a make-up artists needs as many palettes as I have. I'm also a huge fan of Ofra highlighters and liquid lips 😍
Unsub: I answered this one over here lovely nonny!
Thank you for the ask😊

I could do with some online work for the next few months as I'm going to be moving around a lot so I thought I'd try something here.
I will proofread original stories, fanfics, academic essays of all levels, résumés, cover letters, and anything else you may have.
If a fanfic is from a fandom I'm familiar with then I would be happy to help with beta-reading, characterisation, etc.
Pricing would depend on the word count, turnaround time, and what you are able to afford. I'm flexible and happy to negotiate :)
I have extensive knowledge of English grammar as part of my training for my TEFL certificate and I've written some/read a lot of fic so I'm familiar with different styles.
I could also have a go at translating short (<5000) fics/other types of text from Spanish or French into English.
Please send me a message if you're interested (either @sunshine-and-tornadoes or @callxthexmidwife ), and please signal boost!

TEFL Courses
When teaching abroad, our TEFL courses prepare you Click here for more info about TEFL Courses
A TEFL certificate. Few things are as essential on the resume of an aspiring foreign English teacher (aptly also called a TEFL teacher). A lot of aspiring teachers view the TEFL course as nothing more than a hurdle to jump in order to procure that certificate vital to securing their dream career of traveling the world and educating its youth. However, TEFL courses should not be taken lightly. Along with providing the important certification, TEFL courses also provide all the much needed practical and theoretical framework necessary to ensure your success in the classroom. A good TEFL course will make sure you are fully prepared to produce educational and interesting lessons while giving you the tools needed to deal with any problems that will inevitably pop up in a classroom setting. Here’s how TEFL courses prepare you for life in a foreign classroom.
Classroom Management One thing all those colorful flyers promoting teaching abroad will have inevitably left out is this; children can (and will) be absolute monsters at times. There will be days that your entire class is involved, listening and focused but truthfully, those days are few and far between. Many days you will have all kinds of behavioral issues pop up, fighting, screaming, bullying, texting or simply not listening. Add this to the communication barrier brought on by the fact that the students understand very little English (and you probably understand absolutely none of their language), and it can be enough to make any self-respecting teacher fantasize about throwing the little barbarians off of very high buildings by the dozen.
However, seeing as throwing your students off buildings is generally considered a no-no by most faculties, one needs to come up with alternative methods for correcting unwanted behavior. That’s where your TEFL course comes in. Good TEFL courses will have long and extensive units dedicated to classroom management. They will have tips and tricks specific to both different behaviors and different age groups. As far as practical skills go, classroom management is by far the most invaluable one, you will use it every day of your teaching career so make sure your TEFL course has a good one!
Lesson Planning On Your first day of teaching, you’re going to walk into the classroom and see dozens of little eyes staring at you with no absence of curiosity only to realize something, you actually have no idea what you’re doing. Fear not! This will only last a few minutes thanks to your TEFL course. Another vital thing good TEFL courses teach you is how to create and execute a good lesson plan. A good lesson plan is the foundation of your class and how well the class goes depends almost entirely on how well laid out your lesson plan is. There are many components to a lesson plan and good TEFL courses will go through all of them to ensure that your lesson plans are iron clad and sufficient to hold the interests of even the rowdiest classes while being long enough to fill that entire hour.
Grammar You probably rolled your eyes at this one. “But I’ve been speaking English my whole life! I already have perfect grammar!” You probably do but, can you use the correct terms to explain the rules and subtler nuances of the English language? Do you know what synecdoche, prepositions, pronouns, antecedents, clauses, and Gerunds are? How about interjections, intransitive verbs, predicates, or present participles? Unless you’re an absolute grammar nerd (or an English teacher!), you probably don’t. And as an aspiring English teacher, you’re going to have to learn each and every one of those pretentious words in order to teach them to your students who will undoubtedly disdain them more than you ever will. The good news is that you already did learn most of that stuff in high school even if you don’t remember it! Good TEFL courses don’t spend too much time on grammar but go through all of it thoroughly to refresh your memory on all it’s forgotten. While grammar may be one of the least interesting components of your TEFL course, it’s very important to make sure your course has a good one!
Self Motivation, Dedication and Commitment As a teacher, you’re forced to pretty much manage yourself. Sure you might have a director or supervisor that you email your lesson plans into every week, but for the most part, you’re the king in your own classroom. Your director/supervisor probably doesn’t speak the greatest English themselves, and pretty much trusts you blindly. Now, this is great for a lot of reasons; you get to use your own ideas and creativity as well as manage your own time according to your schedule. But for a lot of other reasons it can, to put it quite bluntly, suck. With so much freedom, it can be pretty hard to motivate oneself to produce an adequate output for the responsibility entailed in being an English teacher. Your lesson times are fixed but all other aspects of your job are done on your own time; marking, creating lesson plans, and assessments. It can be very hard to get up the motivation to do these things, especially seeing as you’re in a new and probably exotic place with so much to see and do. That’s where your TEFL course comes in. Most TEFL courses are online meaning that like teaching, you must be 100 percent self-motivated to complete the class and obtain your TEFL certificate. There are no professors pushing you to complete assignments or meet deadlines, it’s all on your own head. True it’s not quite as much work and commitment as teaching will be, but it’s a very good start and provides you with the much-needed mind frame one needs to be a successful TEFL teacher.

I’ve read it somewhere that when you’re angry, try to express it with your body (actually working out) rather than speaking out aloud on someone and later regretting it. The science that works behind this is the secretion of some hormones also known as “feel good” hormones which have both short and long-term responses to exercise. For example, cortisol, prolactin, growth hormone and testosterone rise during workouts while a rise in luteinizing hormone becomes prominent only after rest (post-workout phase). New research found the production of another natural molecule after intense workout as “endocannabinoids” that act similar to the THC, the active chemical in marijuana.
It can be tough yet important to figure out how to keep your physical and mental health in check, especially with all the problems going on in the world and your head. If you can’t take those out of your body, they will take the control of your mind. Have a look at my first article on Home Workout where I briefly discussed about my stories and journeys with workouts, followed by my workout routines on Chest and Triceps with and without equipment. Let’s begin out today’s journey on Back & Biceps!
Back: For a number of reasons, it’s evident that people are obsessed with abs, arms, chest and boulder shoulders and not back muscles, as nothing much can be seen on camera. But, trust me, it’s one of the most important part of your body (if not the most important) as it will prevent you from injuries, helping you pull more weight in all lifts, to developing the coveted V-shape. The next few points will cover most of your back portions for overall growth at home, with and without equipment. Watch this Youtube video on back and biceps that I made for your convenience!
1. Superman: Like the name suggests, it a super exercise which can be deceptively challenging at times. Just lie keeping your face down on the floor, bed or any elevated platform. Engage your core, glutes and lift your upper and lower body off the ground, as high as possible, pause a little and return to the initial position in a controlled motion like below.
2. Backward Fly: Lying in the same position and core engagement, now take your hands from in front to all the way back over the head, like a bird will do with its wings while jumping from top to a position below. Try to contract the blades at your back, pause and then bring forward slowly.
3. Back Extension: Again, from the same position, you can keep both your hands crossed at your chest and press your feet into the floor behind you to stay balanced. Bend first at your waist, bringing your body down toward the floor and slowly raise your upper body upwards until your shoulders are above hip eight. Engage your core and glutes and keep your feet on the floor. Pause, and then slowly lower down on repeat.
4. Lat Pulldown: Most of you are Familiar with Lat pulldowns which work effectively on your lats. I have 2 customized home workouts in the similar pattern, starting with Lying Lat Pulldown. Lie on a flat surface for this, keep your hands forward wider than shoulder-width apart imagining that you're holding something there (you can use a towel if that helps you). Begin to lower your hands now toward your chest, bending your elbows and pointing them downwards. Engage your upper back and mid-back throughout the move keeping your torso straight. Another version of this item is Dumbbells Lat Pulldown. The only difference is that you'll stand up and use the dumbbells and gravity for hitting the lats in the similar fashion.
5. Rows: I have 3 customized versions of Rows here for you, which start with Close grip dumbbell rows. Just stand and then bend a little, hinge your hips, slightly bend your knees and maintain a neutral position. Hold the dumbbells with an overhand grip, a little wider than shoulder-width part. Now, pull the dumbbells toward your chest by squeezing your shoulder blades together and avoid overusing your arms. Slowly return the dumbbells to the starting position. You can do the same with one arm at a time, alternatively.
Another variation is wide-arm row where you follow the same mechanism but keeping your arms a little wider (but don't mistake it for flying).
6. Deadlift: It's said that there are 2 kings of all workouts, first of which is Deadlift (general) and I have 2 variations for it. Let's start with the Dumbbell Deadlift, where you have to stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Keeping chest lifted, begin to hinge at your hips and slowly bend knees, reaching down to pick up the dumbbells. Keep your back straight and hold the dumbbells. Keeping feet flat on the floor, push back up to a standing position keeping your back straight throughout the movement, your shoulders should be down and back. Return to the starting position, pushing your hips back and bending your knees until bringing the dumbbells back towards the floor. The next variation works same but keeping your legs wider, and picking the dumbbells from the space in between, in close grips also known as Sumo Deadlift.
Biceps: It’s one of the easiest target to hit in your body which can be done with any type of curls. Just remember that Bi means Two, so biceps is actually a set of two muscles (short and long-head) and your routine should hit all of them. Short muscles can be hit while contracting and extending your arms, keeping your hands close to your body and the long muscles can be hit with all other workout where you put your arms away from your body. Again, watch my YouTube video if you find difficulties regarding any of these items.
1. Hammer Curl: It's actually a heavily-overlooked workout because it hit the brachialis, a muscle beneath the biceps (not actually the biceps). But, increasing the girth of this muscle can raise your biceps from below, making your entire arm larger and fulfill your purpose! So, without wasting time, hold and turn your wrists with dumbbells in each hand facing each other. Keep your arms tucked in at your sides and flex your elbows to curl the dumbbells up towards your shoulders. Lower them back with control.
2. Reverse-grip Curl: This exercise is again a compound exercise, targeting biceps, forearms and brachialis. With your hands around shoulder-width position, palms facing down and neutral, grip the dumbbells and allow them to hand with arms extended. Now, curl them up while maintaining your shoulder position and keeping the elbows to their side. The only movement should come from the forearm and biceps muscles flexing the elbow.
3. Concentrated Preacher Curl: This one is the combination of Concentration and Preacher Curl and an interesting item as I have customized it in my own way. This is all about feeling your biceps work, sitting down somewhere elevated and resting your elbows just like you'd do on a preacher bench. It will keep the biceps under tension for a longer period of time, which usually equates to more muscle growth. Using the dumbbells, turn the hands inwards, making the move more comfortable on the wrists and keep doing the curls in a slow speed.
4. Overhead Dumbbell Curls: It's quite similar to that of cable curls. You just have to stand in a comfortable position, picking up a dumbbell in each hand. Tense your upper back and let your arms hand so they're fully extended in straight line like 180 degree. Without moving your shoulders, curl the weight up toward your shoulders. Pause there for about a second, and then slowly get back to the previous position with control.
5. Towel Curls: How could I finish the article without my trademark Towel workout!? 👀 So, here it is, hold a towel with both your hands, place it behind your knee-joint, as use your leg's power to create the resistance. Now you can simply do all the different kinds of curls, feeling all the tensions and you can change the grips depending on which workout you want to execute!
So yes! That’s pretty much all about it. Find the same article in my Blogger Website. As I said before already, I have used my body (read fingers) to make my anger disappear by writing all about my back and biceps home workout (I’ve worked out in the morning though). I feel much fresh now and am going to meet my friends to freshen up my mind more! 😻
#homeworkoutplanforBack #homeworkoutplanforBicepss #homeworkoutplanforbeginners #fitness #homeworkoutplanforwomen #homeworkoutplanformen #homeworkoutplan
See you again with my next article on home workout plan for legs soon. Till then, KEEP CURLING!
