"4 stars from me"
OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Shamus. 4 stars from me. The course teaches everything you need to know when you are training to be a teacher of English. It covers the PPP teaching method, as well as the TTT method. PPP is Presentation, Practice, and Production. TTT is Teacher Talking Time. The PPP method is like gold because it forces you to divide your lessons into…

Sto imparando l'Italiano.
That means I am learning Italian. I really am, and a few other languages all at the same time. I have a thing about not knowing something. I don't like going to countries and not understanding the basics. When I do go and don't know a lot(Czech) I immerse myself. I become a local. I do what they do and eat what they eat. I look up basic phrases so I don't stick out. I learn what not to do very quick. The first time I had culture shock was when I came back to Canada after my tour of South Africa. We went to Toronto for 2 days upon coming back, drove to New York city where I continued to walk in the streets weaving between cars like we had done in Cape Town. It actually took a few days to readjust to our street laws. My only dangerous experience was in that same New York visit. Stopped at a McDonalds to use the washroom in Brooklyn. A lot of them require you to make a purchase to use their services. At the entrance I was looking for the sign that said so and found it. As I was turning to my brother to say "there's the sign", about 12 dudes who were previously sitting down, all stood up at once and started walking towards us with an air of aggression. So we bolted pretty quick. Jumped in the car and actually sped off as best as we could as they flooded out to the street. No idea what would have happened but I don't think we were going to braid each others hair.
Second time I had culture shock was also coming back to Canada, from Czech Republic. I did a TEFL course there and had a little apartment. I went for a couple weeks before it started to get a feel for the place and I stayed a week after the course. Us students had the greetings drilled into us so hard that we would greet each other in Czech and carry on our conversation in English. When Facetiming with my mom, I'd drop random Czech words that we were taught in our language learning classes we used all the time. Little known fact, Prague is a big tourist area. But outside of the main square, no one really speaks English and they will refuse to serve you if you walk into their shop with English even if you switch to Czech. So we got good at the phrases we needed. We didn't live in the square. We were in some old Prague. When I got back to Edmonton, I had a girlfriend pick me up from the airport. I stayed in her guest room and she drove me home the next day. Before that though we went to the mall. It was so incredibly weird to hear English that I couldn't focus on her talking to me. I was listening to everyone's conversations because I could actually understand people. We went to a restaurant and the waitress was POLITE. She greeted us like she actually cared. I just stared at her for a moment. Grocery shopping. Oh boy. They are so aggressive as tellers. You don't do your whole two weeks of shopping in one day. They will yell and swear at you until you leave. You speed pack your groceries and then go to the table outside of the store to fix your bags. We would shop in groups so one person could help you pack and then haul your stuff away while you paid. You did not want to buy more then a few items at once or hold up the line. It took me almost a year to break my speed shopping habit. Now this all sounds insane but I legit didn't want to leave and returned a year later for a visit. Loved it. We have plans for another trip back one day.
So back to the original reason for this post. Italian Espresso Romano. Take a shot of espresso, rub the rim with lemon and put a little peel in it. You'd be surprised what citrus does to a coffee. One day I will have one in Italy. All over Italy maybe. And I will order it in well spoken Italian.

The TEFL Academy: A Complete Guide to the Courses
When I look back on courses that made a big impact on my life, my TEFL certification course is probably the most important. A TEFL certification is a widely-recognized credential that will allow you to teach English abroad or online.
After getting TEFL certified, I found a job teaching English online while travelling. I love the flexibility of my current gig, but it’s comforting to know that I could also start teaching English abroad if I ever wanted to try something different.
For me, having a TEFL certification means having more opportunities to work and travel. It’s a handy tool for any adventurer to have in their back pocket, but you might be wondering where to get certified.
If you google “TEFL Courses,” you’ll probably find about a million certification programs circulating on the internet.
It can be challenging to decide which course is the best for you. For that reason, I’ve been profiling different online TEFL courses to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.
In this post, I’ll cover everything you need to know about getting your Level 5 TEFL certification from The TEFL Academy.
Note: Right now The TEFL Academy is offering 60% off their courses until midnight on Friday! Click here to learn more and to receive the discount.

If you decide to take a combination course with a classroom component, you’ll be able to choose from dozens of locations around the world.
Additionally, The TEFL Academy has internships, volunteer opportunities, and a robust job board available to students.

Cons Of The TEFL Academy

001 - Thursday October 26
It’s currently 6:00 AM here in Shanghai (6:00 PM in Toronto) and I can not drift back to sleep! I don’t have to be downstairs for contract signing for another 3 hours, so I thought it would be a perfect time to blog about yesterday...my first full day (001) here!
The Lingo
DE - Disney English
DA- Disney Ambassador
RMB - Our currency - 1 RMB = $0.19 CAD
On the first full day in Shanghai, I woke up at 5:30 AM wide awake (There is a twelve hour difference from Shanghai to Toronto...so just think of it as my night time is your morning and vice versa). When I woke up, I was instantly starving and craving dinner...but I couldn’t eat because we had medical tests...so I just sat in the shower until it was time to go. The driver picked us up at 8:30 and took us to the medical centre. It was about a twenty minute drive and I took in Shanghai from the back of a minivan. While at the medical centre, we were required to change into a robe. Once done, we wait to be called. In China, they have about 6 different rooms (X-RAY, EKG, Blood Tests, Optometry, Ultrasound & Weight & Height). When you’re there, they instruct you to sit down on a bench in the hallway and they send you to a room where there is a doctor waiting for you...then when you’re done, they send you to another room and so on. In the halls, it looks like a game of Pinball, each person is bouncing from one room to another... it was very comical to participate in. It was also very fast and efficient because there was only one doctor doing one specific test.
I won’t go too much into the details of each room...but I will tell you about the eye tests. I got called into this room with a female doctor sitting at a desk instructing me to sit down. She pointed at an image that was taped to her desk and asked me to tell her the number. It was a colourblind test, and the number was 680 which I was get to get within a matter of a few seconds. Then she told me to cover one of my eyes with this silver spoon thing, and told me to: Read what she pointed to a chart (google is now telling me that it is called a “Tumbling Eye Chart”...I have never seen one in my life until now). So here I am struggling to say “backwards E, 3, W,M”.... and could see her getting upset with me....I mean what can I say, bad font? ...so It turns out she meant....tell her what side the “fingers” point to...up-down-left or right. So I failed that and all I can think of is: What if I get kicked out of China for failing an eye test? Oh language barriers aren’t they fun?
After the last test - the blood test, my on boarding group all met back into the reception where there was a Freshly Squeeze Orange Juice machine. We had to try it because I have never seen a machine like it. Karla and I were struggling to understand the directions and how many bills we needed. An elderly lady was observing us and saw that we were confused so she came over and helped us.
Tumblr media
Once done at the medical centre we headed to a DE Centre, with our orange juice and met up with Fergal. He took the group of us out for lunch at Wagas where I had a Thai bowl (chicken, eggs, rice noodles, green papaya, green curry sauce) and a Chinese Iced Tea!
Tumblr media
Once full, we got our new phone plans! My number has 13 digits in it....so I know I will not memorize it! Our phone plan is super cheap!! 200 RMB for the first month ($38) and then 45 RMB ($9) a month for 2G of data and texting.
Then we went to sign up for bank accounts! When we were done, my on boarding group took the metro back to the hotel, rested for a bit and then went to explore Carefour - which is a grocery store. Now this grocery store had everything - not going to lie. One of my fellow on boarders got shoes for $7.00. Oh and speaking of everything...they sold eels, frogs, crabs and turtles - and not the kind you keep as pets...the kind that goes in a pot over some rice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After exploring the grocery store for about an hour, we got our snacks and we went back to meet the other on boarding team who was all working on their TEFL course at the hotel. Then because it was getting later, a bunch of us decided to go get some Ajisen ramen as a group at the mall. We had a great time getting to know each other and talk with this little Chinese boy! Many of the on boarders are from the United States...some have worked for Disney before, and others are new to this experience just like me!
Tumblr media
Later that night, a new friend of mine here at DE convinced me to go to “The Bund”. Ever google Shanghai, and the first image that comes up is the amazing sky-line with the Pearl Tower? That’s the Bund! At first I was not down because of the jet lag (12 hours difference is tough!) and I just wanted to sleep in my bed...but there’s plenty of time to sleep in Shanghai (like right now...). So we took the Metro, which is 4 RMB (A WHOLE $0.77 CAD) to the Bund. As soon as we walked up the steps to the road, I finally saw what everyone in Shanghai saw! It was like a small NY Times Square. Everything was lit and projected. It was magical. I finally thought to myself: Now this is the Shanghai that I expected! Everyone was out enjoying their night. There were so many global brands that I recognized like: Forever 21, Adidas, UniQlo and H&M.
We saw this Minion dancing in a storefront and we instantly knew we had to go in. The store was colourful, balloons were everywhere and the music was blaring. We went downstairs and were shocked to see how many toys were in such a small store. My friends former DA (who has since left but is working in another school in Shanghai) met us there and showed us even more of the Bund! We walked down the waterfront. There were about twenty to thirty women in red dresses getting their engagement photos taken near the beautiful skyline. The colour red is very traditional - meaning fortune and good luck.
After the waterfront, we went to go get some hot milk tea with jelly and beans in it. This was my first time getting hot bubble tea! It was so good and oddly reminded me of the Vietnamese 7 bean dessert with shaved ice. Delicious and it was a whole 15 RMB... about $3 CAD. Then we rushed to get one of the last metros because they stop at 11:00 here!
All I’m going to say about the later part of my night was that it was amazing and reinforced that I made a good choice in choosing Shanghai. I know I am in the “honeymoon stage” where everything seems wonderful - the pressures of work and not speaking Chinese hasn’t hit yet and I have been constantly on the go, I haven’t had a chance to miss home too much..but for right now, I am happy. I am content and I am realizing that my journey has only just started. I am chasing my dreams but in a country of 24 million people.

Teach Away review OISE University of Toronto TEFL review, submitted by Irma. The OISE TEFL course was designed by OISE University of Toronto TEFL and is delivered by Teach Away.
