The Tees Transporter Bridge, Teeside, Northern England The bridge, opened in 1911, crosses the River Tees between the towns of  Port Clarence and Middlehaven. The bridge carries a travelling 'car', or 'gondola', suspended below the fixed structure, across the river in 90 seconds. The gondola can carry 200 people, nine cars, or six cars and one minibus. The bridge has not been operational since 2019 and it is not expected to return to operation for a number of years. this is so neighbor and childhood friend luke who has been saving up to buy his dream car. and he finally has it but the condition is no where near perfect. the body is pretty solid, almost a dream save for a few scratches here and there, but everything under the hood is a nightmare. he told you this one day when you'd gotten home from getting groceries. in between running in and out of the house to transport bags he told you the details of his car, and you smiled and nodded and tried your best to understand.

but you really don't need to understand everything. the important details are that early in the morning, when the sun is starting to come up and it's not too hot to breathe comfortably, luke is outside working on his car. and it's such a beautiful sight.

one that makes you peek out of your window or sit on your porch. one that even drives you to going on early morning runs so you have a reason to be outside and look.

he's usually wearing a shirt, a tattered black tee or a thin grey wife pleaser, but there are a few times where it's already hot at 9 AM (a bad sign for what the rest of the day will be like) and when you go outside to grab something from your car you see the muscles in luke's back flex as he tightens something under the hood of his car.

that's it. that's all you can take. after weeks of looking at the oil on his forearms and watching the sweat glide down the straight bridge of his nose, after weeks of standing in the shower with the head between your legs or rubbing one out before bed thinking about him, you finally need a real release. something, anything will work.

so when luke's still working around 11 AM, and your parents are off to work, you send him a text inviting him in for sweet tea and lunch. it's really no one's surprise that you both end up on the floor of your room (you warned luke of oil stains on your new sheets) with luke driving his cock into you, the ice in your tea melting and your lunch getting cold downstairs.

The name "Pont De Souffre" is inspired by "pont disulfure" or in English, disulfide bridges. It's a French play on words translating to "Bridge Of Suffering" ("souffre" referring to suffering, instead of "soufre" which refers to sulfur).

Gatac Okazi's name and parts of his design are inspired by Okazaki Fragments ("Okazi" being some letters from "Okazaki"). His shoes and accessories are inspired by the Bacteriophage virus. His first name (Gatac) comes from the DNA chemical bases : adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). It's also inspired by the title of the film Gattaca, that was named in a similar way.

Nadah's name and design is inspired by cellular respiration (her first name being based off of NAD+/NADHs and her last name being a combination of "Mitochondria" and "Krebs" (referring to the Krebs Cycle specifically)). Her leg warmer and hairpin has car designs because NADHs were compared to taxis that transported electrons and hydrogen and I really liked that comparison lol

Tee-Min's name is based on the DNA chemical base thymine (T), their last name "Ceelyse" is based on cytolysis ("cytolyse" in French), this has also inspired their hair. Their shoes are inspired by agarose gel electrophoresis. Tee-Min's sweater has phospholipid sleeves and a phospholipid bilayer pattern on the torso. Their pants have a pattern referring to bacterial cloning vectors.

During the 1930s, Robert Moses led a massive redevelopment of New York that included building dozens of new expressways linking communities to new public beaches, parks, and other amenities. He did this by openly, and unapologetically by demolishing black neighbourhoods and bulldozing their houses to build the roads over. He did this even when more direct routes were available, and when those new roads were finished, he often had low clearence bridges placed over them that would prevent city buses from passing under them to those new public places, which effectively blocked many Black Americans from travelling to them, as many relied on public transportation. Cities around America copied Moses' redevelopment plans to a tee, and when Levittown, New York, the country's first modern suburban project opened, it was explicitly a whites only community. Every subsequent levittown and suburb up until past the civil rights movement was, and meanwhile those remaining black neighbourhoods which weren't demolished had their property values obliterated as funding went away from cities and to these new suburbs, and they deal with chronic health issues to this day as a result of living next to loud, polluting highways on all sides. White Americans destroyed their own cities, they destroyed their walkability, their mixed used urban environment, their character, in the name of segregation and racism. You cannot separate the issues faced by modern urban planners from the racism that led to them, you cannot separate the anti-urbanist screed from wanting to continue that racism. They decided they would prefer to live in worse cities with worse utilities and more unhappiness if it meant Black Americans would be worse off. That's just it.

Reinforced Concrete Bridges Across Massachusetts’ History

Massachusetts has had a pioneering role in the history of reinforced concrete bridge construction. 1893 witnessed the establishment of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) predecessor, the Massachusetts Highway Commission. With the aim of improving public roads, the commission experienced challenges in cost-effectively obtaining rubble masonry used in building culverts and bridges at the time.

By the turn of the century, reinforced concrete was being used extensively. As explored by a MassDOT executive in the Winter 2013 issue of ASPIRE, there were three main reasons: it lasted longer, it was more aesthetically pleasing, and it could be built using less-skilled labor. Such projects involved closed-spandrel arch and beam bridges with decks made of reinforced concrete.

By 1904, the commission had shifted away from consultant engineers to an in-house design staff. The oldest remaining example of a Highway Commission-deigned project is the Sisk Bridge. This segment of the Old State Highway traverses the Westfield River in Chester at 30 degrees across a 110-foot span. As the 21st century approached, a study determined that, while freezing and thawing had degraded the spandrel walls, the arch was still in excellent condition and could accommodate today's vehicle loads. A 2010 rehabilitation project thus focused on new spandrel walls and a widening of the arch extensions while leaving the central reinforced concrete arch intact.

Post-World War Two, prestressed concrete was introduced, which made construction far quicker. This proved critical in 1955 when Connie and Diana, a pair of strong hurricanes, pummeled the state in less than a week. Flooding caused bridges to fail in domino fashion across central Massachusetts. After one upriver bridge collapsed, debris would be swept to the next bridge, weakening it until it failed, and so on. In total, 220 bridges across 80 communities failed, and precast, prestressed concrete beams were a key asset in allowing a rapid rebuilding of transportation capacity.

With most bridges less than 40 feet long, MassDOT selected a uniform structure type wherever possible. Prestressed concrete deck beams, or I-girders, of set dimension were crafted with a surface of membrane and asphalt. Within two years, all failed bridges had been replaced, and a good number are still in service to this day.

The contemporary era of concrete bridge construction launched in 1990, when MassDOT engineers joined the Precast/ Prestressed Concrete Institute New England (PCI NE) as Technical Committee members. This resulted in precast concrete beam standards across New England's six states. While states kept individual bridge details, precast concrete beams now conformed to a standard cross-section detailing and size.

By 1994, the committee had implemented a uniform New England bulb-tee (NEBT) beam series that supplanted the previous AASHTO I-girder. Such bulb-tee girder sections were superior for beam splicing and continuity purposes, particularly with lengthier spans. New York State also adopted what became known as the "Northeast girder standard," which carried through to Canadian provinces such as New Brunswick and Quebec.

The PCI NE Technical Committee also developed a new rapid construction protocol encompassing precast concrete footings, full-depth deck panels, railings, wing walls, and abutments. These standards were ultimately utilized in the Federal Highway Administration's Rapid Bridge Construction manual.

I’m completely devastated by this news. It was such an iconic tree. So much part of the English North Eastern landscape. My heritage and my home.

As much a landmark as the Angel Of The North, The Tyne Bridge or the Tees Transporter.

But this wasn’t manufactured it was part of the natural world. Something we should cherish and protect not abuse and destroy for clicks.

I have my own word to describe these people. I won’t offend anyone reading. Make up your own. As I’ve said before on here evolution is a slow process, unfortunately we still have to wait for the stragglers to catch up.

This is pretty damn horrible.

You might recognise this iconic tree from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - the bit where they pretend Hadrian's Wall is somewhere near Dover.

It's also genuinely beloved and was voted tree of the year 2016.

If you ever wanted to visit this bit of the wall and look at this tree, you can't now. Ever. It's gone. For everyone.
