shannon is overwhelmed. his parents are overbearing. he can’t give chris a juicebox correctly because he hasn’t been there. helena throws him being a ‘hero’ back in his face. all his dad seems to give a shit about is the silver star. shannon asks to go to california. eddie feels alone too. shannon leaves. eddie isnt good enough as a sonhusbandfather still. he gets three jobs. his parents are angry he’s not doing enough. they blame him for leaving. he blames himself too.

he blames himself still for not being there because his mother meant well when she suggested it!!! its not her fault he wasnt simultaneously sonhusbandfathering well enough while being an army medic in afghanistan. he wasn’t there. his dad said he wasn’t there. but his dad wasn’t there either, right? his mom was, and that counts as trying. a mother needs her sonhusband at home with her. even if he has a baby of his own. even if he went to war when you suggested he enlist.

Everybody smiled and laughed. Her grandmother spoke again. She kept the baby and raised it as good as she could while building a life for them both. Deborah asked who the little girl was. Once again they all laughed. Her grandmother said it was her own mother. Deborah looked with even bigger eyes now. Her own mother was the little girl that her grandmother got pregnant with at sixteen. Suddenly she understood why her mother had send her to her grandmother. It all made sense now. After a while Phillip was born. Deborah understood now too why there was such a big age difference between him and her mother. They didn't have the same father. Deborah looked at her uncle and smiled. Then she looked at her grandfather again. He wasn't really her grandfather but that didn't matter. He was like a grandfather for her. He was so much better at it then her other grandfather back at home.
