Knight Commander Grenzel 'Zell' Hellsing - 10 of Swords

This piece has been so much fun to work on. I've learned a lot of new techniques and rekindled my love of illustration with this; I'm very excited to see where things go from here.

I went back and forth on doing a tarot-inspired portrait for my Knight Commander, partially because I didn't want to lean too hard on my gamer roots as a Dragon Age fan, partially because making a Tarot piece feel like it hit the mark is HARD.

Eventually I decided not to go for any one specific style and just let myself feel things out as I went, playing around with texture and composition until I landed on what looked and felt good.

As such, this turned into more than just a 10 of Swords piece, rather something that represents the full suite of Swords as well as the narrative themes that follow this particular character. Betrayal, Loss, and Anxiety paired with Clarity, Inspiration, and Ambition. Meanwhile, hidden in the background are clusters of six arrowheads representing victory within creative problem-solving. They look something like trees among winding riverbeds or nature trails- a reminder of his nomadic lifestyle and formative times in the River Kingdoms.

The scarlet halo suffused with blue light, and the blue cloth stained with blood, represent the constantly warring nature of his ancestries as a Dhampir and a Celestial. Heaven's light draws him, but also burns him, as represented by Lariel's flaming blade. Desna's butterflies remind his desire for freedom and secretly dreamy, romantic nature.

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I do! Now to find somewhere I can get this printed onto a blanket or something.

Anyway on a bright note I’m so enjoying this book I thought I’d ironically and sardonically hate listen evil style but I’m just unironically enjoying it it’s not high brow or nothing it’s just cute and makes me squee a little 🤭😋 tee hee !

hyrule warriors hylian culture to me seems to be based a lot on Lore and War. you do not get to see much of any given location outside of battle, but there are snippets here and there.

hyrule castle in particular is where a lot of the military power is focused, arguably The Place for those who enlist to train. some things i find interesting about it is that zelda seems to be the sole ruler, with no mention of a king or queen. zelda is also battle ready from the start, suggesting she has an incredibly active role in running the kingdom, if it does not fall solely on her (and impa, as her advisor/bodyguard). it makes sense then that the hylians are very much devoted to her as their princess as well as the Known holder of the triforce of wisdom.

that is another thing! people know about the triforce! or at the very least aware of the cycle. linkle’s introduction establishes that part of the Textual culture is that there is lore surrounding The Hero. it takes shape as both a role (ceremonial, there is a uniform and status for the hero set aside) And as a historical/mythological figure symbolizing courage and strength. children are encouraged to believe that they could be The Hero in the same way kids get told they can be astronauts.

the rest of what i have to say is like . All speculation and assumption on my part. i don’t have any textual evidence to support it i just think it is true ^.^ and im too nervous to get into it without evidence but i love you thank u for asking

LIKE!!! The investment in the metaphysics of souls and the elven relationship with the orcs was already SO bold and brilliant in this scene but KNOWING EVEN MORE OF THE BACKSTORY NOW IS JUST- I CAN HARDLY BREATHE IT'S SO EAGER TO GRIP THE INTERNAL WORLD PHILOSOPHY AND SHAKE IT LIKE A DOG

Like I'm so sorry this ⬆️ was genuinely groundbreaking tolkienian adaptation that both displayed full awareness of some of the most obscure tolkien lore but was also brave enough to engage with it in a radically inventive and heartwrending way. And despite my worst fears they have continued exploring it in season 2. For this alone I love the show.

I'm getting more out of my mind about this the more I think about it no but listen fuck listen to me okay what RoP has done is... create a narrative within Tolkien's middle earth where the most heroic act, the familiarly desperate fantasy-protagonist plan enacted by characters who did not know if they could succeed they only knew they needed to try, the most valourous action so far in the whole show that could have been the end of evil itself- THAT belongs to the Orcs. They bet their lives in the hopes that this one rebellion against evil could secure the freedom and peace for their people, inspite of the fact that evil truly is the only ally they will ever have in this world, and it nearly succeeded!! Until Galadriel just couldn't let it go!! LIKE!!

imagine sleeping in a little later than wesker - something that likely happens terribly often, considering. one morning, you're awoken by the sudden press of gentle, prickly, insisting stubble against the side of your cheek. you think it's just part of the waking sensations of a dream, but you feel it again, a little lighter, the other side... a little lower.

and then the fanning descent of morning coffee breath curling into a guard-dog sigh you'd never hear if he knew you were conscious. it's deep and rumbling, soft - unbecoming if you're cold and clinically calculated.

then, finally, you know he leaves your side by the sound of fabric softly, gently gliding away and off, footsteps near-silent as he regards your apparent unconsciousness with reduced volume.
