by that point, winnie had resigned herself to the belief that her life would never become what she'd always fantasized about. it was easier to hold onto hope when she was a child and anything was possible, back when she still believed in such ludicrous ideas as true love and happily ever afters. she'd learned in her teen years that she had no hope of achieving a fulfilling life if she remained confined to the borders of her stiflingly small hometown, but she didn't have what it took to make it in the real world on her own. she was too soft, too sheltered, never having learned to properly fend for herself, so her only hope of escape would have to come in the form of rescue. whether or not that rescue came along with her desire for love, she would be elated either way, but it just so happened that she got all she ever wanted wrapped up in one handsome package. her heart flipped in his chest when teddy grasped her hand with the utmost gentleness, heartbeat speeding up in response as he allowed her to feel his. it wasn't nearly as erratic as her own, but just being able to feel the steady thumping of it beneath her palm while his hand dwarfed her own was immensely comforting. "i didn'... n-no, i... i didn't know..." her tendency to assume the worst left her with a warped perception of the world, having faced too much disappointment in her life to continue holding onto hope. it was impossible not to feel a little spark of it blossom once she finally learned of his true feelings, all those lofty dreams she'd abandoned a decade ago beginning to creep back in. they'd yet to discuss any sort of future plans, as winnie had been too scared to even express her feelings until then, but for the first time in ages, she felt as though a happy life was attainable. "no! not at all– i-i mean... 'course... i ain't never felt like this before. never thought i would... 'm just surprised, is all."

winnie was a sweet girl, almost too sweet for teddy's tastes but maybe that was what he needed right now. his tendency to indulge a little too much in things bad for him had lead him to her doorstep, running away from the repercussions of his unquenchable hunger had given him the opportunity for something a little more subdued. it would likely not last, nothing did with him , she didn't need to know that though. he hummed in confirmation before reaching out, his big hand swallowing hers up with ease before bringing it up to his chest, over his heart. "can't be much a surprise, can it? i thought with the way i've been following you around like a lost puppy you must've had an idea..." small town living had taken some getting used to but it wasn't all that bad, at least not when he had winnie there to fluster. he wasn't sure what he was going to do, whether he'd win her over then abandon her when it felt safe enough to return home or if he'd try and take her with him but either way, having her doe eyed gaze on him spelt some kind of hopefulness for the future. "tell me i've not made a total ass of myself... say you feel the same way."
