This week of characters per day, "Super Heroes."
I'll be honest, I love superheroes but I don't have that much interest in making my own superhero universe. I feel like I don't have much new to contribute that hasn't already been said by many of the great storytellers. But even still, I do have a few characters that I would like to do something with. And a few of these heroes have shown up before.
Julie, to be clear, is actually part of the "magical girl scp" universe rather than part of this "World Hero Society" universe but there's no rule saying I can't crossover two of my worlds from time to time.
Flavor Text goes as follows: 1: "No I don't actually turn into solid gold, it's an indestructible alloy that kinda looks like gold."
"So why's your codename, Goldie?"
"Well... Goldie's a way better name than 'Indestructible Alloy-y' right?" 2: Defender Yellow, last survivor of The Ranger Patrol-Force continues the fight against evil as a solo hero. Attempts have been made to recruit her into the World Hero Society but all offers so far have been quietly rebuffed.
3: Julie, The Technomancer, has had enough monster bullshit right now. Dir Fairbanks recommends we stay out of her way.
4: The World Hero Society has kept an eye on the hero known as "Big Help" but has decided not to poach her away from her position as a small town defender. Besides, she seems to be happy in her role keeping one town safe and helping people when their broken down car needs a lift.
5: The WHS first became aware of the P4TT1 entity when she came to them with information about an imminent world wide threat to critical data centers on the web. P4TT1's ability to inhabit her consciousness in any copy of her likeness on the internet has proven a helpful asset.

Greedfall 2 Developers Are Going on Strike, Allege Studio Management Treats Workers Like ‘Galley Slaves’
The developers of upcoming fantasy role-playing game Greedfall 2 have announced plans to strike in protest of management just a few weeks before the game comes out.
Paris-based studio Spiders, which also developed Steelrising and The Technomancer, published an open letter signed by 44 of the 95 staff to studio management including CEO Anne Devouassoux. Spiders is wholly owned by publisher Nacon, which IGN has asked for comment.
The open letter details “several years of known problems, which have been greatly amplified over the past year with the arrival of the current head of the company: instability, opposition to anticipating problems and securing working conditions, global mismanagement, turnover and recruitment problems, unacceptable delays in achieving gender equality and parity, important lack of transparency, denial of problems, refusal to acknowledge worker representation and blocked negotiations.”
Specifically on Greedfall 2, workers allege it has suffered a “difficult” production and there is “widespread anxiety and a loss of interest among employees.” The staff also said they have suffered significant crunch working on the game.
“For many, it translates into a fear of releasing a disappointing game at the end and/or a feeling of shame over their own work,” the workers said. “For some, it's the last straw that pushes them to look for work elsewhere.”
Elsewhere in the document, the workers claimed that Greedfall 2's budget “was reworked multiple times and its early access release postponed several times.”
“Management gives the impression of treating us like galley slaves in the hold of a ship, rowing on and on without ever knowing either the route or the destination of their journey,” the workers said. “Spiders feels like a ship sailing with no one at the helm.”
Greedfall 2 currently has an early access release date of September 24, 2024, with a plan to release the game in full less than a year later. According to staff, that seems unlikely.
“The early access release is painful, as attested by the several delays it suffered, and the complete release of the game less than a year later seems difficult to achieve, as there is so much left to do,” they said.
The staff published a list of demands and outlined a plan to strike the week of September 2. Pickets will be held in front of the company’s offices and online on a Minecraft server created for the occasion, the staff said.
The Spiders strike comes amid a growing labor movement within the video game industry as workers seek to protect themselves from mass layoffs and the threats posed by AI. In July, Starfield developer Bethesda Game Studios became the first Microsoft studio to fully unionize under the Communication Workers of America, forming a "wall-to-wall" union of developers including artists, engineers, programmers, and designers. Sega of America's union ratified a contract earlier this year, with Activision's QA workers announcing a union of their own.

Medic (Starfinder Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by ianllanas on DeviantArt)
So two weeks ago we looked at Pathfinder Second Edition’s take on a medical professional-themed archetype, and now today, we’ll see how things change with a few millenia worth of medical advancement!
Indeed, today we’re looking at Starfinder 1E’s take on the medic, one that specializes in or supplements their magical healing with good old fashion actual medicine. After all, while we do have the biohacker class, it is more focused on how chemicals affect the body rather than focusing purely on healing.
Speaking of which, biohackers and mystics are both natural picks here, but as we’ll see, there are plenty of ways to play a medic. Imagine for example a mechanic medic that acts as a first responder in disasters, and has a drone to help carry patients, or even operating on them remotely through the drone if unable to safely do so.
Either way, in more sedentary settings these doctors may run or be part of clinics, helping patients when they come in, or they might be actual medics in armed forces, or perhaps doctors for hire catering to a wealthy client or serving aboard a starship’s crew. Either way, they are welcome wherever they go, as the healing arts are almost always respected, or at least required, by most every sapient species at least once in a while.
So let’s take a look at what they bring to the table!
Naturally as medical professionals, these characters bring some new uses to the medical arts. These include things like restoring stamina with excess healing, treating many patience with long-term care, returning heavily injured patients to consciousness, and treating diseases at a brisk pace.
Later on, this expands with even more bonuses and uses, such as healing vitality when performing mundane medicine, preventing a victim from degrading further due to a poison or disease, or even slowly restore patients in extremely poor health back to vitality.
Finally, the most skilled of these medical professionals can bring someone back form the brink of death, provided they reach them in time.
Whether they use magic or technology to heal, there is always going to be a use for a healer, which is why they can show up with any class or profession. As mentioned before, biohackers and mystics are obvious picks, but mechanics working with mechanical or exocortex assistance could be just as good with bodies as they are with machines. Meanwhile, combat classes might be cross-trained as actual medics either to keep their fellow soldiers alive and protect them, or perhaps out of a desire to bring more than death into the world. Even skilled classes like envoy and operative, as well as the other spellcasting classes can get involved, with the former two representing those that are extremely skilled in multiple areas (and maybe putting their extensive knowledge of anatomy to use to heal and harm for operatives), while spellcasters may seek mastery over every aspect of reality, even life. From precogs and witchwarpers envisioning a reality in which no one dies under their care, to the technomancers that won’t let a little thing like the limitations of their pseudo-arcane magic get in the way of helping others.
It can sometimes be hard to remember in the wealth-driven state of society (or the dystopian parodies of it that exist throughout science fiction, but the majority of people get into medicine not out of a desire to have great wealth, but to help people. Whether they are doctors in clinics, or a ships doctor or even a military medic, they all strive to preserve life despite living in a universe of deadly beasts and dangerous foes aplenty. That drive can be a good place to start when it comes to portraying them.
Turned into a biological experiment by an exploitative employer, Torvah the half-orc swore she’d never let anyone suffer a similar fate under her watch, and so she became a mercenary doctor specializing in breaking into questionably-legal facilities as well as preventing and rehabilitating victims of induced mutation, a role she excels at. However, she remains disgusted by her own shifting body, particularly the lethal bone spear she can extrude as a weapon.
The crew has been commissioned to hunt particularly deadly game, but luckily not to kill. Dr. Venagax is looking to retrieve blood samples from a xaxmellia, a colossal kaiju beast with acidic vital fluids, making even the process of extraction a dangerous prospect, let alone subduing the beast beforehand.
There has been a recent outbreak of implant rejections in the undercity. With resources being limited as they are most would write this off as a normal occurrence, but the infections all share the same genetic markings, suggesting that this isn’t a series of coincidental accidents, but rather deliberate contamination.

Click below to read all about this week's releases
Unbecoming by Seema Yasmin
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Two Muslim teens in Texas fight for access to abortion while one harbors a painful secret in this funny and heartfelt near-future speculative novel perfect for fans of Unpregnant. In a not-too-distant America, abortions are prosecuted and the right to choose is no longer an option. But best friends Laylah and Noor want to change the world. After graduating high school, they’ll become an OBGYN and a journalist, but in the meantime, they’re working on an illegal guide to abortion in Texas. In response to the unfair laws, underground networks of clinics have sprung up, but the good fight has gotten even more precarious as it becomes harder to secure safe medication and supplies. Both Layla and Noor are passionate about getting their guide completed so it can help those in need, but Laylah treats their project with an urgency Noor doesn’t understand—that may have something to do with the strange goings-on between their mosque and a local politician. Fighting for what they believe in may involve even more obstacles than they bargained for, but the two best friends will continue as they always have: together.
A Magic Fierce and Bright by Hemant Nayak
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
A young technomancer teams up with a handsome thief to save her sister in this propulsive, magic-filled young adult fantasy that is perfect for fans of Gearbreakers and Iron Widow . Adya wants nothing more than to be left alone. Content to be loyal to no one but herself in the isolated jungles of South India, she dreams only of finding her lost sister, Priya, and making enough money to take care of their family. It’s too bad that her rare ability to wake electric machines—using the magic that wiped them out five centuries ago—also makes her a coveted political pawn. Everyone seems to believe that her technomancy can help them win the endless war for control over the magic’s supernatural source. These senseless power struggles mean little to Adya. But when her enemies dangle news of her sister before her, she’s all too quick to leap at the chance to bring Priya home—even if it means teaming up with a rakish, disreputable thief in order to do it. With the threat of invasion looming ever larger on the horizon, Adya must reconcile the kind of person she is with the kind of person she wants to be and untangle the web of intrigue, conspiracy, and deceit that threatens to take all of India down with it.

"Blind allegiance makes you a pawn. A real leader protects his squad."
The Bad Batch, technically known as Clone Force 99, is the result of Kaminoan experiments to create a specialist unit of clone commandos. Hunter, their leader, is a strong and stoic soldier. Hunter has extraordinarily keen senses that give him an edge when tracking down targets.
Some stuff to kick off the New Year :) I’m not used to drawing a ton of sci fi outside of my webcomic, but I would like to improve in that area since it’s pretty relevant to my field IRL. Also I LOVE Bad Batch, just how often the characters balance each other out and have their own kind of specialties while on the run. As cool as the whole Jedi Sith thing is, I find the non fantastical parts of Star Wars more relatable. I’m pretty happy with how Omega actually feels like a kid without being a brat. Hunter didn’t interest me that much at first, but he’s grown on me because of how much he’s had to make difficult choices and balance out the team. It’ll be back to my Elden ring stuff next week but I will have some more Star Wars down the road, if at least to practice.

For theme
Mumbo and magic don’t mix which is really hard when you’re a redstoner which is basically technomancy. So every time he tries to make any type of redstone it’s always analog which makes him sad because of all the stuff he sees the other redstone hermits are capable of he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong! Until tango and doc pointed out he wasn’t using a spell focus which made a few gears click together. But even that had some rather…unwanted repercussions because whenever he tried one out it either blew up, disintegrated in his hand, or became sentient and tried to attack him Jevin is still trying to figure out how that one happened.
At that point Mumbo basically gave up! He was doomed to never use magic for as long as he lived…until he learned of a way to make it work at the expense of potentially blowing up half of gem’s forest. It’s quite simple really if mumbo has some sorta living anti-magic field around him all he needed to do was minimize said field and relocate it to somewhere else! And where no better then Gem’s abandoned starter base she’s not using it anymore!
And it worked! Mumbo started being able to cast spells properly and even use proper redstone magic! The other hermits have never seen him happier well there’s still the occasional issue that he programs in the wrong spell. Because just last week his new chest sorter unleashed a horde of sentient fireballs to chase after Grian and Doc by accident and when mumbo had to explain himself all he said was “wait so your not supposed to put fire spirits into the hoppers?”
The challenge now, of course, is that Mumbo is having to learn what most technomancers learned when they were young. His focuses are still sometimes a bit... Unfocused. He can't help it, his thoughts wonder and suddenly the stone he's holding is shooting into the ceiling!
It also means he's never learned the limits of what he should do with magic. Things that should and should not combine. Doc sits him down and tries to talk him through it - before Mumbo kills them all through a rogue spell. It goes in one ear and straight out the other. Accompanied by a whole lot of 'but why not?'
None of the hermits can really be angry at his mishaps, though. Mumbo's excitement is infectious! He's getting to experience something he's longed for. And, of course, he leaves very nice 'I'm sorry' presents for all the hermits.

I'm under the weather, but I'm back.
First point: the tech shop in the next town over are technomancers. They revived my old laptop. I didn't mind that they had to wipe everything and install a new OS. So, now I have two Win 10 boxes. They took care of all the bugs in the newer one and cleaned out bits of broken plastic. It is working as good as new. I'm quite happy. Second point: I have had pneumonia for the last month and this is not fun. My energy is low and all I seem to manage is two major tasks for the day on a good day. I'm on a third round of antibiotics. I'm really hoping this kicks it out of my system.
Third point: Starting next week, I am going to attempt to do all the blogging and the daily prayers. I don't know how successful I am going to be given that I am sick, but typing is a low effort activity which means I can do more of it and spend less proverbial spoons.
I want to thank you all for your patience and good will.

I did this in like, maybe ten-ish minutes today? Might have been faster, I didn’t time myself. But regardless, it came out so fricking cute I couldn’t keep it to myself.
So, have an Anetta inspired by the session from like, two? weeks ago where our team bullied the crap out of a very depressed widower arch-fey, who seemed especially uncomfortable when my lil technomancer warlock was around. She COULD have stayed in the van, but her curiosity got the better of her and well, much anxious squeaking was had. (One of our players was actually trying to measure the pitch of the squeaks I was making and it was honestly hilarious.)

When Flash-Freeze betrayed their team, it was a shock to everyone, the League of Heros, the public, and especially Villains United.
“Why? Why betray your friends and allies to join us?” The Lord asked, confused.
“I never passed high school. My family was extremely poor, so I dropped out and worked 3 jobs to help with the bills.” Flash-Freeze said numbly. “My mother died of cancer, my father was a drunkard and died in a car crash while drunk driving. My siblings and I barely made it by, my grandparents were able to take them in the day I turned 18, so they got a decent life, but I was stuck in my own, with no education, no money, and the power to freeze the air around me and anything I touch, while being completely immune to the cold.”
“So, you decided to join the League of Heros?” Technomancer questioned, immensely interested.
“Yes, I heard they had Skulk in their ranks, and he’s rich. I thought they would have decent pay, maybe free housing and some benefits like dental. You know what they had? Nothing. They pay around 120 dollars a week. No housing, no benefits, barely enough to buy food and pay rent in a shitty little apartment.” The air around them starts to grow cold, the floor of Villains United’s hideout frosting over. “They made fun of me, mocked me for being poor and less useful than Master Cold.”
“Damn that asshole, Master Cold. Hate that guy.” Speedy mumbled off to the side.
“We accept your request to join, Flash-Freeze. Welcome to Villains United.” The Lord announced. Flash-Freeze nodded, to the villains.
“I have a few things to do, you know how to contact me?”
“You have to ask?” Void Courier said sarcastically.
“Oh. Right, I’m going to make some changes to my costume. Let me know when I’m needed, and if it involves The Super, he’s mine.” Flash-Freeze states.
The group all murmured in agreement. Flash-Freeze walked out of the room and into their new chambers, pulling out their sewing equipment and getting to work. A few days later, Void Courier knocked on their door.
“Hey, we’re going on a heist in The Super’s city, The Lord thought you should know.”
The door opened slowly, inside the room was dark. A blast of cold, frigid air blew out, sending a chill down Void Courier’s spine. Flash-Freeze stepped out in their new costume. Their black cloak put over their shoulders, rapped around them, their former insignia on the back, slashed to ribbons. A mask covered their face, made to look like a frozen skull, and on their back sat an executioner’s sword.
As The Super approached the bank, he took notice that everyone inside the bank at the time was left unharmed. The inside of the building, however, was covered in ice and frost, and it was nearly cold enough to make him actually shiver. That wasn’t right, he was invincible to anything except dysprosium! (Real metal, look it up!) The only other thing that ever made him shiver was-
He just barely was able to move out of the way of the executioner’s sword swinging at his neck as someone in a black cloak and frozen skull mask brought it down.
“Wow, you nearly got the drop on me! Good one, nice attempt!” He said smugly, getting no response out of the figure. “Aww, c’mon, you’re clearly a villain, I’m a hero, we’re supposed to do the whole banter thing.” The air got colder as he finished his sentence, and the figure turned and ran towards the vault. The Super’s eyes went wide when he saw the back of the figure’s cloak, it was Flash-Freeze’s insignia.. the League of Heros thought they had gone on a trip to visit family, had they been ambushed and killed by this new villain? They were always the weakest members of the of the group after all. He didn’t really care if they died or not, but for his public image, he couldn’t let them get away with it without punishment.
He flew towards the vault, the air getting even colder as he punched through the ice covered vault door. In the vault stood the figure, along with The Lord and Technomancer, every box and stack of money in the vault was gone.
“You’re too late, Super! You lose!” Technomancer announced proudly.
“And now you’re outnumbered, surrender.” The lord spoke calmly. The third figure stood staring in silence, their executioner’s sword in their hand.
“Who’s your new friend, Lord? And where’s Flash-Freeze?” He asked with a false rage behind his voice.
“Why, they’re right here!” The Lord gestured towards the figure, a smug smile appearing on his face as the figure put their hood down. As they took of the mask, Super’s face turned to shock, and then instantly switched to true anger.
“No! That can’t be real! That’s a clone!”
“You would expect that, wouldn’t you?” Flash-Freeze angrily growled. “You may trick the public and the rest of the league, but you always showed your true self around me. And now, your weaknesses have been exposed to the world because you refused to show any kindness to me.”
The air in the vault grew even colder, Lord and Technomancer started to move, Super never noticed as they exited the vault. He was just staring angrily at Flash-Freeze.
“I know a weakness you have that not even you know of. One you instinctively fear.” They snapped, and the air around Super didn’t quite freeze, as much as it became a solid. Super felt as every molecule in him suddenly stopped all motion. It was a quite strange feeling, not cold as much as it felt like nothing at all. It felt as if all his senses became null as his body became encased in solid air.
“You can’t hear me, but you are now in absolute zero temperatures. Everything in you has stopped, the air around you has become a solid, as well as the air inside of you, your blood, your stomach acid, and every other bodily fluid.” Flash-Freeze spoke, Super heard nothing. He didn’t see anything, he didn’t feel anything, taste anything. He was alive and existing, but completely unable to even think.
Flash-Freeze put their cloak up and their mask back on as they picked up The Super and carried him outside. They threw him to the ground in front of the camera crew filming the heist.
“I have an announcement for the world. I am Absolute, I will talk what I want, when I want. The Super was too weak to fight me, give me an actual challenge next time.” Absolute said directly at the camera, as they took out their sword, and beheaded The Super. He never felt it as he died. He didn’t even bleed.
You are a superhero who joined a team for pay and benefits. However, the pay is minimum wage since you have no education and they made it so you are blackballed in the civilian world so you can’t work there either. So imagine their surprise when you joined the villain’s team.

Races Among the Stars 6: Grippli
We’ve got another blast from the past today in the form of everyone’s favorite tree frogs, the grippli!
Much like other species from lost Golarion, we don’t know much the grippli adapted to the industrial age and space age of Golarion, to say nothing of how they might have been during the Gap. However, evidence suggests that they retained many aspects of their hunter-gatherer society up to that point.
Regardless of where they were, grippli certainly know where they are going, adapting readily to new technologies and eager to explore the galaxy.
I imagine that most Grippli in the Pact Worlds are found on Castrovel, since it is after all one giant rainforest, but anywhere it is warm and wet seems a likely place to find them, despite their relative rarity.
Grippli haven’t changed much from the days of yore, still being a small race of frog-folk resembling tree frogs of all sorts of colors and description, though a few resemble the brightly-colored poisonous frogs also found in some rainforests (and might be just as toxic, though the alternate racial trait for that hasn’t been officially published yet). I imagine that grippli armor and clothing would be lightweight and breathable so that their skin can breathe, having tiny holes that close or are plugged by force fields when environmental protections are needed.
Not much details are given on Grippli culture in the far future, but given their history as hunter gatherers that lived in harmony with nature, their culture in the far future likely falls heavily in line with the philosophy of the Xenowardens, and many likely work as xenowardens or with them as part of survey or colonist teams. Others may find value in work as garden caretakers, guides, and the like, though obviously other career paths are possible.
Gripplis are typically agile and insightful, but their small size makes them rather weak.
They are adept at concealing themselves in vegetation, however, letting them strike from ambush.
Much like the tree frogs they resemble, grippli are adept climbers and jumpers, giving them highly vertical movement options.
They also can move through the muck and foliage of marshes without hinderance, knowing where to step and their webbed feet to distribute their body weight.
They also have a long history of using nets in combat, which carries over to the modern nyfiber designs.
With their dexterity and sneakiness, these grippli make very good operatives or commando-esque soldiers, not to mention ranged nanocytes, solarians or vanguards. Those seeking personal perfection may become evolutionists of the vital niche, representing a desire to become one with nature in a very literal way. Their knowledge of biology and poisons also comes in handy if they choose the path of the biohacker. Meanwhile, those eager to explore new worlds and meet new people might become envoys for that purpose. While not traditionally technologically oriented, grippli mechanics and technomancers are unafraid to use any trick to gain an advantage, and any drones they might use are likely equipped to be as stealthy and low-impact as possible. Mystic is a natural choice due to their history of shamanism and occult magics, but precog, and witchwarper are also viable. Indeed, the only thing that really hurts them is their strength penalty, but that can be overcome, either through boosting ability scores or replacing them with a handy suit of power armor, should you choose such a build.
That does it for this week, and that’s another species from the alien character deck done too. Look forward to more of these species entries in the future, and more archetypes next week!

Retrowave San Jose - Flamingo Motel on Alameda (17 x 11 in)
Remember that piece I did of that retro-looking motel in my downtown back when our Cyberpunk campaign was still going on? I took a leap on catprints and gave them a try! I think it looks pretty nice with a Light Card Stock - Gloss. I’ll be selling these and other prints tonight and this weekend at the Oddfellows’ Lodge in Downtown Mountain View for an Art pop up. This is my first time delving into art prints so any feedback is appreciated! The gloss is nice with the colors, although the paper feels a tiny bit thicker than what I’ve usually found at the Art Alley for Fanime. I know it’s a little different from what I usually post these days. but I’m in the real mood for something more colorful, something more retrowave or lofi, which I’ve always wanted to do. It has been a hard week, but I’m hoping to end strong. To all the people I’ve met on art walks, hope to see you there! Other artists will be there too if you just wanted to check em out n chat : )

(Sounds good!)
Well, we’ll get there shortly. First, why don’t we start with this.
The curse snaps her fingers and an incorporeal replica of the Cursed Goggles appear on the table.
This, is the cursed object in question. Found, in what would become the storefront of our friend here. The object grants the wielder nearly unlimited power over construction, and technology. It allows the user to completely scan an object, and understand how it works, and how to build it, along with granting the power to assemble anything the user can think of, assuming they provide the parts. It was found by the Technomancer, blah blah blah, I’ve told the story already, I don’t need to again.
Another Snap, and an intangible scroll of Infernal Parchment appears
And here, is the curse. Everything is laid out clearly, right there. This was presented to the Technomancer on the first usage of the item. “The artifact becomes bound, to the user, until the user perishes by any means. The artifact can only be destroyed by the user the artifact is bound to,” yadda yadda, legal mumbo jumbo, then finally, the part we’re concerned about.
“After utilizing the object for a trial period of 1 week, the object may ask for payment. In order to continue using this object, the payment must be payed in full. Payment may be re-negotiated, but anything already paid for may not be returned.”
In this case, the payment mentioned, would be the complete consumption of her soul, and takeover of her body over the course of a day, along with a down payment of 1,000,000 coloumbs of her Life Force. I will not offer to give back the life force, but I am willing to change the first section. The whole “consume her soul and take her body” thing. If we were to come to a compromise, I would completely reverse the takeover up to that point.
( @technomancing-in-a-magic-world we need to switch posts because Tumblr mobile is a mess and wont let me reblog)
