Updates from my Quantum Journey
It's been silent on my blog for a while now - the past year has been a busy time for me since I was working on my Master's thesis as well as working as a research assistant at Fraunhofer in parallel. Both were great experiences but it became so time-consuming that I totally lost track of posting any content on this blog!
In April 24 I finished my Master's Thesis in Physics in which I was mainly working on tensor networks. We tried to make DMRG (Density Matrix Renormalization Group) for Quantum Chemistry-like setups more efficient by lifting degeneracies in the symmetry sectors of the tensor network structure. Besides from what I learned on the physics-side of this project, it helped me to foster my fascination for method-development.
My work at Fraunhofer was very rewarding as well - I did not only learn a lot, I also had the chance to contribute in two publications in the area of quantum circuit cutting. In case you are interested, I could write a blog entry for one or both of the papers(:
During all this hard work and (to be honest) frustration and exhaustion in the past year I had this optimistic hope of doing a PhD after finishing my Master's degree. Now, this dream has become a reality and I started my PhD at the Technical University of Munich this month. I am really grateful for this oppurtunity in which I can work full-depth in the field of quantum computing - with a strong focus on software/method development. I am excited about what this journey has to offer and I am very much looking forward to it!

Farmed and herded animals maintain a circular flow of materials in agriculture, by using and upcycling large amounts of material humans cannot eat, turning them into high-quality, nutrient-dense food. One-size-fits-all agendas, such as drastic reductions of livestock numbers, could incur environmental and nutritional consequences on a massive scale.

Europe's forests have already been severely affected by climate change. Thousands of hectares of trees have already died due to drought and bark beetles. Scientists from the University of Vienna and the Technical University of Munich TUM have now investigated which trees can be used for reforestation. Their findings indicate only a few tree species are fit for the future, such as English oak in the UK. However, mixed forests are important for the survival of forests, otherwise the forest ecosystem as a whole could be weakened. The results of the study were published in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

Egypt unveils hidden corridor in Giza pyramid
An international research team has discovered a previously unknown chamber in the Cheops pyramid of Gizeh. As early as 2016 measurements had given reason to assume the existence of a hidden hollow space in the vicinity of the chevron blocks over the entrance.
Now scientists from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have used ultrasound and endoscopy to make an important contribution to confirming this assumption. The status of the Egyptian pyramid as one of the best investigated structures in the world makes this find particularly important.
The Cheops pyramid is considered the largest and oldest of the pyramids of Gizeh. As part of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World it has been thoroughly explored; however, the structure still holds many undiscovered secrets. TUM researchers have now solved one more of the pyramid's mysteries. Read more.

Tourist next to the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, 1958. "Sadly destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 after surviving nearly intact for 1,500 years, the monumental Bamiyan Buddhas were not the color of stone, but instead glowed with strong colors in ancient times. Restorers from the Technical University of Munich have analyzed hundreds of fragments of the statues that the Taliban Islamist government blew up and found that they had originally been painted in bright colors such as red, white and blue. In addition, scientists have managed to establish, for the first time and reliably, the time of its creation, which they place between the years 544 and 595 for the small Buddha, while the larger one was built between the years 591 and 644..." The transition to renewable energy requires efficient methods for storing large amounts of electricity. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a new method that could extend the lifespan of aqueous zinc-ion batteries by several orders of magnitude. Instead of lasting just a few thousand cycles, they could now endure several hundred thousand charge and discharge cycles. The key to this innovation is a special protective layer for the zinc anodes of the batteries. This layer addresses previous issues such as the growth of needle-like zinc structures -- known as zinc dendrites -- as well as unwanted chemical side reactions that trigger hydrogen formation and corrosion. The research team, led by Prof. Roland A. Fischer, Chair of Inorganic and Metal-Organic Chemistry at the TUM School of Natural Sciences, uses a unique material for this purpose: a porous organic polymer called TpBD-2F. This material forms a stable, ultra-thin, and highly ordered film on the zinc anode, allowing zinc ions to flow efficiently through nano-channels while keeping water away from the anode.

POWERWOLF To Release New Studio Album, 'Wake Up The Wicked', In July
POWERWOLF will release a new studio album, "Wake Up The Wicked", on July 26, 2024 via Napalm Records.
"Wake Up The Wicked" — the highly anticipated follow-up to the extremely successful "Call Of The Wild" (2021) — will arrive just in time for the award-winning band's first-ever full North American tour, starting in August 2024, followed by their biggest European headline tour to date, the "Wolfsnächte 2024".
"Wake Up The Wicked" was once again produced by Joost Van Den Broek at Sandlane Recording Facilities and marks a new benchmark and undisputed career highlight for the band. The new album is hard, surprising and full of variety. While staying true to their established, loved sound, POWERWOLF go one step further and showcase a different facet of their deft musical and technical skills. This is evident, for example, on the outstanding single "1589", which is based on a true story from the 16th century.
20 years after their formation in 2004, POWERWOLF are expanding their repertoire with the highest quality and adding many future live hits to their extraordinary discography. "Wake Up The Wicked" is yet another statement cementing the status of the band as a leading force in the world of heavy metal
"Wake Up The Wicked" track listing:
01. Bless 'Em With The Blade 02. Sinners Of The Seven Seas 03. Kyrie Klitorem 04. Heretic Hunters 05. 1589 06. Viva Vulgata 07. Wake Up The Wicked 08. Joan Of Arc 09. Thunderpriest 10. We Don't Wanna Be No Saints 11. Vargamor
POWERWOLF are undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and successful heavy metal bands of the last decade. Multiple No. 1 album chart entries, gold and platinum records, huge sold-out arena shows, as well as headline slots at the biggest festivals have paved their way. In less than 20 years of band history, POWERWOLF has made it to the very highest league of heavy metal.
POWERWOLF has conquered countless stages at the world's biggest summer festivals, and their last "Wolfsnächte" headline tours (2019, 2022),as well as their aforementioned North American debut in early 2023, were almost completely sold out — resulting in a massive triumph. They have performed headlining sets at Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze, as well as held premium slots at genre festival giants such as Hellfest, Graspop Metal Meeting, Masters Of Rock and many more, captivating enormous audiences. No other German metal band has been able to write a success story even remotely comparable in recent years.
Following their onslaught of North America, POWERWOLF will embark on their most impressive European tour yet in celebration of their highly anticipated 2024 studio album. Amid 16 shows in total, the tour will visit colossal venues in Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Hamburg and Antwerp. POWERWOLF will be accompanied by Swedish heavy metal legends HAMMERFALL as special guests, with support from viral rising stars, dwarven metallers WIND ROSE.
The story of the frontrunners of today's German metal scene, POWERWOLF, began in 2004 and only knows one direction: ever upwards. Their trajectory may seem like something out of a fairytale, but it is the result of the band embodying the highest quality of heavy metal in the universe. Outstanding album production, bombastic live shows and a tireless drive for perfection on and behind the stage are what this exceptional band is known for around the world.
Over the course of their career, the band has not only fascinated metal fans, but has also won over international press and critics. Countless cover stories in the most important magazines, critics' awards such as the Metal Hammer Award, and effusive album and concert reviews underpin POWERWOLF's outstanding international status.

"After 30 years of painstaking development, researchers in Germany and New Zealand have unveiled a laser gyroscope that can track fluctuations in Earth’s rotation in near real time and accurate to several milliseconds. The technique is much simpler than current methods and could provide further insights into phenomena that cause the fluctuations – such as shifts in ocean currents.
The Earth rotates once in one day, but there are tiny fluctuations in the rate and direction of our planet’s rotation. Some of these fluctuations are well understood – for example those caused by the tidal forces of the Moon and Sun.
Other tiny fluctuations are not well understood including those related to the exchange of momentum between the solid Earth and the oceans, atmosphere and ice sheets. These effects can arise from climate events such as the El Niño southern oscillation, which change ocean currents. As a result, measuring fluctuations in Earth’s rotation could shed light on important processes in the atmosphere.
Most rotation studies involve combining data from global satellite navigation systems; very long baseline radio-astronomy observations of quasars; and laser ranging. Due to the complexity of combining these techniques, only one measurement can be made per day.
Now, a team headed by Ulrich Schreiber at the Technical University of Munich has created a laser gyroscope that can measure the tiny fluctuations in near real time. What is more, their instrument can fit into a large room."

A Bavarian Romance
Markus, a 23-year-old with a mop of unruly brown hair and a mischievous grin, had always been a city boy. The vibrant energy, the constant buzz of activity, and the endless possibilities of Berlin were his natural habitat. Growing up in the heart of the city, Markus had developed a deep-rooted love for its diverse culture, its vibrant nightlife, and its endless opportunities.
Orphaned at the tender age of seven due to a car accident, Markus had found solace with his grandmother, who had lovingly raised him in the heart of the city. Despite the tragic circumstances of his childhood, Markus had grown into a resilient and optimistic young man. His grandmother had instilled in him a strong sense of independence and a belief in the power of human connection. She had taught him to appreciate the simple joys of life, to embrace diversity, and to always strive for his dreams.
When his grandmother suggested a week-long trip to Bavaria to escape the summer heat, Markus couldn't resist. The promise of quaint villages, emerald green forests, and towering mountains was too tempting to pass up. He had always been drawn to the idea of exploring a different part of Germany, a region known for its stunning natural beauty and its rich cultural heritage.
As he boarded the train from Berlin, Markus couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. He had packed his backpack with comfortable clothes, a good book, and a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery. As the train sped through the countryside, Markus gazed out the window, taking in the lush green fields, the quaint villages with their half-timbered houses, and the distant peaks of the Bavarian Alps.
The journey to Bavaria was a journey of discovery. As he arrived in the small town nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, Markus knew that he had made the right decision. He was ready to immerse himself in the beauty and tranquility of this enchanting region.
Markus had settled into a quiet corner of the charming, rustic café, enjoying the solitude and the peaceful atmosphere. He had always been somewhat shy, especially when it came to meeting new people. As he sipped on a refreshing Radler, he found himself drawn to the man sitting at a nearby table. There was something about his relaxed demeanor and his genuine smile that made him seem approachable.
Frederick, a 26-year-old with a lean build and a kind smile, was taking a year-long break from his demanding job as a management consultant with an MBB firm based in Munich. He had decided to spend some time in the Bavarian countryside to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature. As he noticed Markus sitting alone, he felt a pang of sympathy.
With a deep breath, Frederick mustered up the courage to approach Markus. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, his voice soft and friendly. Markus was taken aback by the sudden interruption, but he managed to nod politely. Frederick sat down across from Markus, who couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement. It wasn't often that strangers approached him in such a friendly manner. Something about Frederick's relaxed demeanor and genuine smile made him seem approachable.
"So, what brings you to Bavaria?" Frederick asked.
Markus responded in a shyful manner, "My grandmother suggested it. She wanted me to get away from the city for a while."
He had always wanted to explore the region's stunning natural beauty and its rich cultural heritage. When Frederick then asked about Markus's profession, the young engineering student lit up. He spoke passionately about his studies at the Technical University of Berlin, his specialization in mechanical engineering, and his particular interest in renewable energy. Markus believed that technology could play a crucial role in addressing climate change, and he was eager to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.
Their conversation flowed effortlessly as they discussed everything from the beauty of the Bavarian countryside to their shared love of renewable energy. Markus was immediately captivated by Frederick's warm smile, his gentle demeanor, and his intelligent wit. And Frederick, in turn, was intrigued by Markus's infectious enthusiasm and his genuine curiosity about the world.
Over the next few days, Markus and Frederick explored the Bavarian region together. One day, they hiked through lush meadows. During their hike, Frederick leaned in closer, his eyes locking with Markus'. There was a moment of electric tension, and then Frederick gently pressed his lips against Markus'. The kiss was soft and sweet, filled with a sense of intimacy and connection. Markus felt a surge of warmth and affection as he responded to Frederick's kiss. In that moment, he knew that he had found something truly special.
Frederick and Markus returned to their room, their hearts pounding in their chests. As they closed the door behind them, they couldn't resist pulling each other close. Their embrace was passionate and intense, their bodies pressed tightly together.
They undressed each other slowly, their hands lingering over every curve and contour. As they lay together in bed, their bodies entwined, they looked into each other's eyes with a mixture of love, desire, and wonder.
Frederick initiated the kiss, his lips moving gently against Markus'. Markus responded with equal passion, his hands exploring Frederick's body. As they kissed deeper, their bodies began to move in unison. Frederick's touch was gentle yet firm, his movements deliberate and intentional.
Markus felt a surge of pleasure as Frederick's fingers traced patterns over his skin. He responded instinctively, his body arching against Frederick's. Their bodies moved together in perfect harmony, their passion growing with each touch, each kiss.
Frederick took control, his movements becoming more forceful and deliberate. He positioned Markus beneath him, his body hovering over his lover. With each thrust, Frederick's hips pounded against Markus, driving him deeper into ecstasy. Markus arched his back, his body trembling with pleasure. The intensity of the moment was palpable, the heat of their bodies radiating through the room.
Markus felt no pain, only a wave of intense pleasure that washed over him. He was completely absorbed in the moment, his senses heightened to the extreme. Frederick's movements were powerful and rhythmic, his body a blur of motion. Markus could feel the sweat beading on Frederick's skin, a testament to the intensity of their passion.
As Frederick continued to thrust, Markus's body began to react instinctively. His muscles tightened and relaxed in perfect synchronization with Frederick's movements. He felt a surge of energy coursing through his veins, a sensation that was both exhilarating and terrifying.
As they reached their climax, they cried out together, their bodies shuddering uncontrollably. For a moment, they lay still, their hearts racing, their breaths ragged. Then, Frederick rolled over, pulling Markus into his arms. They held each other tightly, their bodies still warm and flushed. The lingering heat of their passion enveloped them, creating a sense of intimacy and connection that was both powerful and profound.
As they drifted off to sleep, Markus felt a sense of peace and contentment. He had found something truly special in Frederick.
As they spent more time together, their connection deepened.
One afternoon, they found a secluded spot by a crystal-clear lake. They spread out a blanket and lay side by side, gazing up at the blue sky. Frederick took Markus's hand in his, and they sat in comfortable silence, simply enjoying each other's company.
Later that evening, they went for a long walk through the forest. The air was crisp and cool, the trees casting long shadows. As they walked, they talked about their hopes and dreams, their fears and insecurities. They shared stories about their childhoods, their families, and their aspirations for the future.
As they walked back to their inn, Frederick took Markus's hand in his. "I'm so glad I met you," he said.
Markus smiled. "Me too," he replied.
That night, as they lay in bed together, Markus felt a sense of peace and contentment. He had found something truly special in Frederick, and he couldn't wait to see where their journey would take them next.
On the final day, Frederick and Markus stood on the platform, their hands clasped together. The train whistle blew, signaling the departure. Markus knew that this was not goodbye, but only a temporary parting.
Frederick pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to Markus. "Here," he said, "Give me your number."
Markus smiled and wrote his grandmother's house phone number on the paper, "I'll call you when I get back to Berlin," he promised.
Before they parted ways, Frederick pulled out his favorite shirt and handed it to Markus. "Here," he said, "Take this. I want you to remember me whenever you wear it."
Markus smiled and took the shirt. "Thank you," he whispered, his voice filled with emotion.
As the train pulled away from the station, Markus watched Frederick until he was out of sight. A wave of sadness washed over him, but it was tempered by the excitement of knowing that he would see Frederick again soon. He had found something truly special in the Bavarian Alps, and he couldn't wait to see where their journey would take them next.
A week later, the phone rang in Markus' grandmother's apartment. She picked up the receiver.
"Hello," the voice said, "May I speak with Markus?"
Markus' grandmother furrowed her brow, trying to recognize the voice. She held the phone out to Markus, who took it and listened intently.
"Markus?" the voice asked. Markus' heart skipped a beat.
"Frederick?" he replied, his voice filled with excitement. "It's good to hear from you."
He couldn't believe that it had only been a week since they had parted ways. The memories of their time together in Bavaria were still fresh in his mind.
