Oliver Willis at Daily Kos:
Billionaire Trump donor Elon Musk and Trump’s travel partner and conservative activist Laura Loomer, who has embraced and promoted a host of racist notions, are in a public feud about immigration. The argument has received support on both sides, exposing another early division in the MAGA coalition.
The dispute began after Loomer complained on X about Donald Trump’s decision to name Sriram Krishnan adviser of AI in his upcoming administration. Loomer quoted a post in which Krishnan advocated for removing green card per-country caps for skilled immigrants. “It’s alarming to see the number of career leftists who are now being appointed to serve in Trump’s admin when they share views that are in direct opposition to Trump’s America First agenda,” she said. Loomer, who has described herself as an “Islamophobe” who supports “pro-white nationalism,” went on to describe Krishnan and others like him as advocates for foreign students coming to the United States to “take jobs that should be given to American STEM students.”
Later, Musk argued in favor of providing more visas to tech workers while responding to an X user expressing sympathy with Loomer’s position. “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low,” he said. Responding to another X user calling for a more restrictive visa policy, Musk said, “Your understanding of the situation is upside-down and backwards,” arguing that there is a “dire shortage of extremely talented and motivated engineers in America.”
Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump named co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency along with Musk, chimed in to argue that “American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long.” “A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers,” he said. [...] After Loomer’s X account was reportedly suspended and her ability to recruit subscribers limited, she alleged that Musk made the changes in retaliation to her criticisms of Krishnan and Trump backers in the tech industry who support bringing in more immigrant workers.
[...] The feud has exposed a schism between two of the key groups of the Trump constituency: anti-immigrant racists and billionaire tech executives who seek to cut spending on social good while pushing tax cuts for the wealthy.
MAGA-on-MAGA violence between the Musk/Ramaswamy/Tech Bros faction and the Loomer faction has brewed over H1B Visas and immigration more generally.

I would like to think I'm capable of awakening class consciousness in people and I'm going to keep having these conversations regardless because I'm incapable of shutting up about politics but I feel like every time I try to explain basic communist positions to other usamericans my voice falls on deaf ears. and I think the reason for that is that here in the usa, all of this discussion comes across as just abstract theory with no practical applications. the average usamerican is so unbelievably privileged that they've never had to think about how capitalism affects them because for them, the pros outweigh the cons. why bother pursuing drastic change for something that basically works for them when incremental change could give them what they want with no concern for anyone not from the usa?
it's extremely frustrating because it's not abstract in the slightest! even from my privileged position, I've seen it with my own eyes! at my previous workplace, every single person except me was an immigrant, usually indian, with most of them in the country on work visas, which meant that our employer could deport them at a moment's notice by terminating their employment if they didn't obey every order without question. they expected my coworkers to work overtime every single day and even work on weekends; meanwhile, they were much more lenient on me, a us citizen. that's not even to mention the large number of people in india who worked remotely for our company as contractors. a usamerican company employed all of these highly skilled tech workers to generate profit for them, when their labor could have instead been used toward the end of improving the conditions in their own country. all of these people were building up the digital healthcare infrastructure of the usa, and most of them likely would never be able to reap the benefits of their own labor on account of not being us citizens.
when I try to communicate to other usamericans that the convenience and comfort available to us are only made possible through the subjugation and exploitation of the people of the third world, they just don't care. to them, the people of the third world don't have names, faces, personalities, hobbies, or dreams; they're an anonymized hivemind whose suffering is eternal and cannot be explained. but it's not eternal, and it can very easily be explained! our government and the corporations it serves force these people to suffer so that our lives can be a little bit easier. that should make you furious! but the average usamerican is so selfish and entitled that even if they fully understand how imperialism benefits them, it doesn't bother them in the slightest. it makes me sick having to interact with these people regularly.

random but are you permanently settled in the USA now? or will you return after studies etc. or is it too soon to say
even if i wanted to, which i don't, H1B visa life is horrible and the wait time for a green card is about 30 yrs for my background. so nah, i'll finish out my 3 year work authorization after my degree and exit out. it is possible life in india will be untenable for even savarnas in tech in 5 years. i will consider immigration then but that will preferably be to somewhere that wants me. idk like the nice thing about having "in demand" skills is that the question doesn't feel existential atm but then again who knows.
#do not underrate my cowardice tho. maybe that stem engineering money will be too good to give up. maybe i will redacted.#asks#anon

Kelby Vera at HuffPost:
Vivek Ramaswamy got quite a strong reaction from conservatives when he tried to explain hiring trends across the tech sector in a culturally-charged social media post on Thursday. In an extended post shared on X, the tech entrepreneur wrote about how “top companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over ‘native’ Americans,” claiming the imbalance “isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation)” but rather because of differences on the societal level. “A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture,” Ramaswamy continued, before telling readers, “Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH.” The CEO-turned-politician’s assessment? That “American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long.” Ramaswamy suggested that entertainment has had an outsized impact on shaping mainstream American values “at least since the 90s and likely longer.”
“A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers,” he claimed. Comparing and contrasting characters from several popular ’90s sitcoms, Ramaswamy went on to say, “A culture that venerates Cory from ‘Boy Meets World,’ or Zach & Slater over Screech in ‘Saved by the Bell,’ or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in ‘Family Matters,’ will not produce the best engineers.” His solution? “More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less ‘chillin.’ More extracurriculars, less ‘hanging out at the mall.’” While Ramaswamy’s point about pop culture seemed reasonable enough, the entrepreneur’s diagnosis veered into problematic overgeneralizations when he claimed the difference boiled down to families’ cultural and geographic backgrounds. “Most normal American parents look skeptically at ‘those kinds of parents,’” he wrote. “More normal American kids view such ‘those kinds of kids’ with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.”
[...] Ramaswamy then tried to rally readers to help shift the status quo by envisioning a future where America “once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.” While he pinned demographic disparities across the tech world on supposed cultural differences, the imbalance is more likely about dollars and cents. In 2020, a study by the Economic Policy Institute found that employers that rely on America’s H-1B visa program to recruit temporary employees with “highly specialized” skills and technical education often pay those workers well below the market wages. Companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Walmart, Google, Apple and Facebook have all made robust use of the program to fill job shortages. With President-elect Donald Trump preparing to implement a draconian deportation strategy when he assumes office next month, conservatives still seem to be at odds over how to approach the labor shortages troubling many of America’s biggest and most profitable businesses. Though Tesla CEO Elon Musk, like Ramaswamy, has vowed to be behind Trump’s harsh immigration policies, on Wednesday he posted that “the number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low,” and the country needs “to recruit top talent wherever they may be.”
DOGE co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy helped spark MAGA-on-MAGA violence over his X post on cultural differences on work expectations between native-born and foreign-born Americans.

The Muskrat Strikes Back
It could be his last strike
ROBERT REICH
JAN 22
Friends,
First, it was over Trump’s nominee to be Treasury Secretary. The two finalists were Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and Trump’s co-transition chair, and Steven Bessent, the founder of the investment firm Key Square Capital Management.
Lutnick turned for help to Elon Musk, who posted on his X that Lutnick would be a better choice for treasury secretary than Bessent, because “Bessent is a business-as-usual choice, whereas @howardlutnick will actually enact change. Business-as-usual is driving America bankrupt, so we need change one way or another.”
I’ve spent quite some time around presidents and president-elects and even advised them about personnel decisions. The most basic rule of such advice-giving is you never make your advice public because it puts a president or president-elect in the awkward position of conspicuously backing you or not.
In this case, Trump didn’t back Musk’s candidate, and business-as-usual Bessent will be Treasury Secretary.
The problem for Musk isn’t that he lost this skirmish. It’s that he got into it publicly at all.
Strike one against Musk.
Then it was the matter of visas to foreign skilled workers.
Musk posted that they should be allowed into the United States. “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low,” Musk wrote on X. “If you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be.”
But several notable MAGAs, such as Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon, disagreed, to put it mildly. Loomer told The New York Times that Musk is “not MAGA and he’s a drag on the Trump transition,” and said she believed that Musk was using his relationship with Trump to further enrich himself. “Elon wants everyone to think he’s a hero because he gave $250 million to the Trump campaign. But that’s not much of an investment if it allows him to become a trillionaire.”
Bannon warned Musk “we’re going to rip your face off.”
Trump seems to have sided with Musk on this one, at least for now, but it’s bad form to start or expose a rift among a president or president-elect’s key advisors.
Strike two against Musk.
Then there was the little matter of Musk’s apparent Nazi salute on stage before Trump’s arrival in Washington’s Capital One arena on Monday.
Musk says it was misinterpreted. Others condemned it as an intentional sign of solidarity with and outreach to far-right groups.
No matter. The last thing a president needs — even one who’s a neofascist like Trump — is to provoke public worry over his administration’s neo-Nazi leanings.
But let’s not call this a strike against Musk, at least just yet.
The bigger problem for Musk is he just cast doubt on Trump’s first major tech investment.
On Tuesday, with much fanfare, Trump announced a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle to create at least $100 billion in computing infrastructure to power artificial intelligence — dubbed “Stargate.”
Trump took credit for the companies’ decision to spend up to $500 billion building data centers, which are huge buildings full of servers that provide computing power.
But in two messages on X late last night, Musk said that the venture wouldn’t succeed because it didn’t have sufficient funding. “They don’t have the money," Musk wrote in reply to an OpenAI post on the announcement. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”
I don’t know if Musk is correct or if he’s just pissed off at OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman. (Musk has his own AI company and has sued OpenAI and Altman for violating antitrust law. Altman took to X Wednesday morning to refute Musk’s assertion about insufficient funding.)
But that’s not the point. If you’re a president’s major advisor (and First Buddy, as Musk likes to say), you don’t do a public bowel movement on one of your boss’s first big initiatives.
Strike three.
Musk just moved into his office in the Old Executive Building next to the White House. but he’s already a loose cannon that makes Trump look weak and submissive. My guess is Musk is out within a week.

Why Everyone Will Travel to the U.S. Soon
Did you know that the United States is projected to see a 30% increase in international travel over the next year? With its unique blend of iconic landmarks, cultural diversity, and thriving vacation rental options, the U.S. is quickly becoming the ultimate destination for travelers worldwide. If you’re planning your next adventure, now might be the perfect time to book a vacation rental in the USA and explore all it has to offer. Discover how platforms like Llivo can enhance your travel experience with tailored accommodations and bundled services.
The Rising Appeal of U.S. Travel
The United States has always been a dream destination for many, but its growing appeal is reaching new heights. From world-famous attractions like the Grand Canyon and Times Square to lesser-known gems hidden in quaint small towns, there’s something for everyone. Coupled with the availability of comfortable and unique vacation rentals in the USA, travelers are now drawn to explore the country like never before.
Additionally, as European countries introduce new travel restrictions, such as the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in the United Kingdom and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in the European Union, the U.S. emerges as a more accessible and appealing alternative. These policies, requiring additional authorization for visa-exempt travelers, are expected to redirect some tourist interest towards the U.S. Learn more about these changes here.
Challenges That Once Hindered U.S. Travel
Historically, several challenges deterred visitors from traveling to the U.S., including:
Travel Restrictions: Stringent visa policies and pandemic-related border closures made it difficult for many to visit.
High Costs: The perception of the U.S. as an expensive destination often discouraged budget-conscious travelers.
Cultural Misunderstandings: Concerns about navigating cultural differences or large urban centers also played a role.
However, recent improvements and easing of restrictions have diminished these obstacles, making the U.S. an increasingly attractive destination for international travelers. While past immigration policies focused on curbing illegal immigration, they do not impact lawful tourism (Read more).
Why the U.S. is Now a Must-Visit Destination
1. Easing of Travel Restrictions
With many pandemic-era restrictions lifted, visiting the U.S. has become more accessible. International flights have increased, and simplified visa processes make planning trips less daunting. This newfound ease of travel is encouraging adventurers to consider a vacation rental in the USA as a base for their exploration. Platforms like Llivo simplify booking with transparent pricing and personalized services.
2. Affordable Travel Options
Economic factors like competitive airfare prices and the rise of budget-friendly accommodation options have made the U.S. more appealing to travelers. Platforms such as Llivo offer diverse rental options that cater to all budgets, making travel both affordable and convenient. From cozy urban apartments to serene countryside escapes, there’s something for everyone.
3. Diverse Cultural Attractions
From vibrant music scenes in New Orleans to the tech hubs of Silicon Valley, the U.S. offers unmatched cultural diversity. Visitors can experience everything from outdoor adventures in national parks to bustling urban landscapes, all while enjoying the comforts of a short-term vacation rental in the USA.
The Key Moment Driving the Surge
One of the most pivotal moments in boosting U.S. travel has been the return of major cultural and sporting events. Festivals like Coachella, global conferences, and world-class sporting events are drawing crowds from across the globe. These events, combined with scenic destinations and convenient lodging options, are making the U.S. irresistible to travelers. Secure your spot early with Llivo.
