Thanks to @slutaciouslestat for the tag!
This was actually…easier than anticipated? Also for some reason I gave myself the extra rule that I needed to avoid showtunes so I have a little mini showtunes list if anyone is curious lol
Jenny - The Mountain Goats
Vincent - Don McLean
The Ballad of Lucy Jordan - Marianne Faithfull
Mary - Big Thief
Dear Avery - The Decemberists
I’ll be Right Behind You, Josephine - Josh Woodward

Do you have any idea of when that high-pitched laugh was added during the instrumental part of Masquerade? I’ve just noticed it in the more recent boots I’ve watched. Is it just that particular ensemble member who decided to do it one day and they kept it?
Yeah, I went back to my bootlegs, and I basically pinpointed it to sometime between December 1994 and May 1995 (meaning that in December 1994 it wasn't there but by May 1995 it was). So it's been around for a while!
Interestingly there were quite a few variations on it - in the beginning, it was just a small outburst of (what sounds like mostly male) laughter, then it started becoming longer and louder, and by the early 2000s they had added in some screaming too from the female ensemble members (or at least that's what it sounded like), though later they seemed to calm it down to just one person laughing / screaming. So it was definitely not just one ensemble member doing it at times, it was several of them, and if it was unplanned at first, then it definitely wasn't that as time went on.
As for when it got removed, based on my audios (which are of varying quality, so possibly I didn't hear it on some of them), it seems to have disappeared sometimes between the end of June 2012 and the end of July 2012. I think this also coincided with a fairly major overhaul of the ensemble at the time that saw a number of long-running members leaving (I remember Kimilee Bryant, James Romick, and of course George Lee Andrews, all departing the show around the 2011-2012 era), so I imagine the two are related - possibly one of the cast members leaving had been the one doing that laugh, or an overhaul of the cast also meant an overhaul of some acting choices that had been part of the show for a while.
On a more opinionated note, I liked the laughing and screaming - it lends the scene a more chaotic feel, which is probably how it seems in Christine's mind, and given that she's seemingly pursued and haunted by reminders of the Phantom, I think the laughing and screaming also works as another reminder, seeing as how the last time she saw/heard the Phantom, he was, well, laughing his butt off as he dropped a chandelier atop screaming cast and audience members.

Could you link some good sources regarding non-binary people? Specifically genderfluidity (since I’m thinking of drawing a genderfluid Erik), but feel free to include references for others under the NB umbrella for whoever needs it.
Yes, absolutely! I’ve discovered that it’s HARD to find guides that are specifically geared towards drawing nonbinary (or any variety of trans) characters, because they either encourage you towards a platonic ideal of androgyny, or they focus on the fact that there is no particular way to look nonbinary, which is true, but maybe not the most helpful. But here are some resources to get you started!
Here you can find the Generfluid entry on the Nonbinary Wiki.
I also like this guide a lot. I think it was supposed to be four parts, but I’ve only ever seen three. Each article links to the next, up to the third. This is a pretty short guide, discussing things like pronouns, transitioning, and even the genderfluid flag.
Here is a tumblr post that discusses genderfluidity, as well as what it means to be non-binary and genderflux. I’m including it because 1) it links to some other great resources and 2) I am genderflux so I like that it discusses it.
Here is a list of questions to consider when working with a genderfluid character. It’s geared towards writing, but I think it could also be a great jumping off point for artists drawing genderfluid characters. You may notice that some articles have slightly different definitions, which may be confusing, especially in reference to whether or not genderfluid people are nonbinary and/or trans. The best way I know to boil it down is that any genderfluid person is considered under the trans and non-binary umbrellas if they want to be, but some may choose not to use those labels. There’s no right or wrong, just preference.
As for more general info on non-binary characters, Here are some things I’ve found useful!
This is a quick guide on working with characters who use more than one pronoun set. It’s geared towards writing, but it’s good to keep in mind in general, and also might be of particular interest to someone working with a genderfluid character.
I really like this discussion on what it means to “look” nonbinary (spoiler: there is no specific way to look nonbinary, just different degrees of transition--or lack thereof--and presentation that people may choose). Here’s a glossary of terms surrounding gender identity and presentation. I’ve skimmed it, and it seems pretty useful for learning some of these concepts!
The Ally Resources list is nested into another link I posted, but I’m going to post it here too because it’s far more extensive than anything I could create. Please be aware that there is a (clearly labeled) NSFW segment with links to NSFW discussions. Please interact responsibly and avoid those links if you’re a minor.
Later on I’m going to try to post some definitions of physical vs social dysphoria, gender euphoria, etc., which can be relevant to binary or nonbinary trans people. I haven’t found definitions and explanations I like well enough to post just yet, so that’s forthcoming.
I hope that helps! If you have any more specific questions, feel free to get in touch!
