until the evening gets late / and i'm alone with you
summary: they're nuisances, that's what Naruto was sure of for years until he actually got to know them for a night, then he finds them stuck in his head
tags: oblivious naruto, pining, mild tension, happy ending :D
authors note: got inspired by that piece of narusasusaku art by @ksntoast where Sasuke and Sakura are what i assume to be incubi/succubi and then this was in my docs, so i hope it's not too much of a bother to tag ya. regardless! i hope the narusasusaku fans enjoy it, consider checkin' the Ao3 port if ya do
https://archiveofourown.org/works/60257614
Naruto is familiar with the sight of these two, they've come to pester him before.
Although, they usually look a little bit more well disguised as human.
Instead they've simply come to him laid bare of all human extras.
They're simple creatures. Skin a light hue of blue or pink that darkens at their hands and their feet. Hair voluminous to try and hide short horns that never go away. No clothing in sight, it reveals that their anatomy lacks compared to a humans. Whip like barbed tails as long as they are tall and probably prehensile, he's not quite sure.
He's just looking at them right now, taking in their appearance despite the dim light of his apartment. He's seated at the edge of his bed, they're just sort of lounged on his furniture. The blue one, Sasuke, is splayed across his couch, his lankiness taking up nearly the entire length of it. The pink one, Sakura, is politely seated on top of his glass tube tv instead, her presence puts it on a static fritz of so many more colours then just black and white.
Naruto stands up and walks directly to his kitchenette, completely bypassing the two.
He just has to live with this forever, doesn't he?
Someone decided to curse him, and now he has two demons forever flitting around him. They take so many forms he's lost count. But their favourite forms are just regular people, usually holding the similar aspects of what he assumes to be their true form. He's not so sure, if he knew what exactly they were he could do research, but they refuse to tell him.
Sasuke perks up, "You're ignoring us?" There's a heady whine to his tone as he switches the end of the couch his head rests at. He crosses his arms over the armrest and lets his chin sit on them.
"Yep, I'm ignoring you," Naruto answered with curtly.
"C'mon." It was Sakura speaking this time, he could see her come ever closer in the reflection of the dark window. They never actually let their feet touch the ground like this, they merely floated. "You really want to ignore us?"
Naruto nodded as dark pink hands came to rest on the counter, clawed fingertips drumming along the marble edge. He just buttered his toast and started walking back to his bed. He swallowed a bite of toast before speaking, "I don't even know why you're here."
"For fun."
"To pass the time."
"Because you're cute."
"We can keep going, if you'd like."
Naruto scooted aside Sasuke before taking a seat on the armrest of the couch. As fast as he had sat down the lithe demon was resting on his thigh as Sakura rested at his shoulders, floating with bent knees and an arm across his collar bones to rest at his shoulder. They weren't cold, they weren't scorching either, they were just comfortably room temperature.
Sasuke and Sakura don't continue, they just smile at him. Lovely smiles. They're almost sultry, but not quite.
"I didn't, I didn't tell you to stop," Naruto said roughly, a blunt embarrassment to his tone.
Sasuke gives a hum of laughter, "If we said anymore you might faint with all the blood rushing to your face."
"And elsewhere," Sakura teased.
"Knock it off, Sakura," Sasuke snapped.
"You're no fun, Sasuke," Sakura said with a bit of a pout. The disappointment quickly faded away as nothing more than a farce.
Naruto swallowed thickly, "So what even are you guys?"
"One incubus."
"And a succubus."
"If that's what you are then you sure have done an awful job of seducing me and like, killing me," Naruto answered with.
"You're too adorable to kill," Sakura said.
"It'd be awful for our conscience if we did," Sasuke tacked on.
"So, who sent you? People can do that, right?" Naruto asked.
Sasuke rolled to rest on his back, looking up at Naruto instead. He didn't answer. He just sort of, looked. Maybe he wanted to lie, maybe he wanted to be honest.
Sakura also goes uncharacteristically quiet. Her grip on Naruto loosens up and she unbends her knees, and her feet hit the ground. It's a jarring detail for Naruto.
"We were supposed to kill you a long time ago," Sasuke said bluntly, "Do the whole routine, I'm sure you're aware of how it goes."
Naruto suspected as much, they are demons, "But you didn't?"
"It's more fun to pester you all the time, even if we were supposed to keep it short," Sakura said, "Usually we can get someone in a singular night- but you, you were too dense for anything to get through your head."
"Your obliviousness saved your life," Sasuke said, "It's unheard of, really."
Naruto isn't sure if he should feel complimented or insulted. It feels like a compliment and an insult at the same time. He doesn't answer.
"Besides, even if we did seduce you, you could probably survive the night," Sasuke said, "You're an abnormality."
"An abnormality?" Naruto asked, his voice was a little bit quieter.
Sakura nodded, "You have a lot of life force. Usually one night with an incubi or a succubi would drain all of it, you have enough to last a night with two."
"And we never fucked because...?"
Sasuke groaned before sitting up and gripping Naruto's face, "Because you're an oblivious fox who can't understand any of the flirts we threw at you!"
Sakura was quick to slide her hands over Sasuke's, he retracted his. She turned Naruto to face her, reveling in the bright red hue on his face. She hadn't taken note of the fact she was floating again, but it felt proper for Naruto to have one of her knees almost knock against him with proximity. She smiled, one that showed how sharp her teeth were, "Why? Do you want to?"
"Maybe," Naruto answered with. His voice wasn't much louder then a whisper, "I wasn't sure if it'd be worth it."
"Even this much contact would leave the average human feeling drunk, Naruto," Sasuke said, hand sliding up Naruto's torso to rest at the nape of his neck, "You're different, you're special."
-/-/-/-
Naruto expects them to be gone in the morning, they even hadn't done much more then make out. He just felt lightheaded after long enough, after the tension had built too high. And they retracted.
Which is odd.
They're demons.
They could've just killed him.
But they didn't.
His head still aches a bit as his eyes come to focus on the ceiling above him. Sasuke and Sakura are laid around him. One hand up his shirt, one at the small of his back. A head pressed to the back of his shoulders and one at the base of his ribs. The reality of the situation snaps him awake and jolts him upright, clutching the blanket high to his chest.
"Woke up?" Sasuke asked.
"You were awake?!"
"We both were," Sakura corrected.
"You didn't leave?" The shock has faded out near entirely from his voice, leaving only an air of honest inquiry.
"Do you want us too?" Sasuke asked as he sat up. One hand raised to rub his arm as he spoke. He still looked the same as last night, skin almost aglow in the slowly yielding darkness of sunrise.
"We can if we're a bother," Sakura offered. She was still laid out on the bed.
"Don't you usually... Leave?" Naruto asked.
"Usually there's a corpse in bed," Sasuke answered with, "Incubi and succubi alike tend to consider being caught with a dead body a bad look."
"You fell asleep instead of dying," Sakura said, "It's new, we were never told what to do if that happened."
"So we stuck around."
"And waited."
Naruto swallowed thickly, "What were you waiting for?"
"For you to die."
"But you didn't- not even once did your heartbeat falter."
"And then you woke up."
"It's unheard of."
Silence.
"So do you guys, like, eat food?" Naruto asked, his tone was somewhat stilted, "Human food."
Sasuke and Sakura shared a brief glance, it was Sakura who spoke, "Sometimes, yes."
"It's not poisonous right?" Naruto asked.
"No, just doesn't do enough for it to be worth eating all the time," Sasuke said.
"Do you guys want some eggs? Or like, cereal?" Naruto asked, throwing aside the blanket and awkwardly shuffling to the edge of the bed. A heady yawn worked its way through him as he stretched his arms over his head. It's still too early to be awake on a Saturday.
"You're not kicking us out?"
"Nope."
"Why not?"
"I don't know how demons work, but until you two kill me you're failures to the others I'd assume- but, eggs?"
"Scrambled please," Sakura chirped amidst the questioning.
"Me too- but really, what are your actual intentions for not kicking us out? Nobody just trusts a demon."
"I guess I do," Naruto answered with bluntly.
"Do you have any drive for survival?"
"Apparently I have enough 'life force' to survive you two, so that counts for something."
"You're so annoying."
"It'll only get worse the longer you stick around."
"Then maybe we'll leave!"
"But isn't killing me your job?" There's a smugness to Naruto's tone as he looks back at them.
Sasuke looks like he might tear out his own hair at the somewhat loophole-esque situation they're in. Sakura merely looks amused at Naruto's attempts to find cracks in the way they work.
"We don't need to kill you," Sakura said, "It'd just make us stronger."
"So that's how it works."
"Did you not know that?" Sasuke asked.
Naruto shrugged, "I don't do much demon research, you're supposed to just be myth and legend."
-/-/-/-
There was an addictive substance in the way they kissed, Naruto decides after the seventh day without them.
They were already living in his head constantly, but now it's just gotten so much worse.
He sees pink and blue every time he blinks, like they got seared into the back of his eyelids. He never should've agreed to it. He never should've even so much as humoured them- they're demons for gods sake.
But here he is.
Still waiting for them.
It's like a gaping wound. The sudden lack. They're usually around the corner, usually somewhere around, usually they're looking for him. He had something to look forward to, even if he did classify them as nuisances.
He doesn't know why he's so fond all of a sudden.
He should do research when he gets home, see if there's a cure. If there isn't a way to cure this itch that rests on the inside of his skin then he doesn't know what he'll do.
His ankles knock against each other as he tries to eat. His overall appetite hasn't been proper lately. Even a bowl of ramen in front of him doesn't spark hunger as much as it should. He wonders if they're to blame. He wonders if they can fix it.
Two people sit across from him.
He knows.
"Hi," Naruto got out, lacking his usual exuberance. He struggled to take a bite of ramen before Sakura or Sasuke spoke, the flavor was decadent but something wasn't right. It was lacking of some sort of spice. He'd like to lie and tell himself it's because they got a new cook who wasn't quite right, he fears it's something worse.
"Sorry for disappearing," Sakura said.
Naruto shrugged, "It's fine- where were you anyways?"
"Doing business," Sasuke said, "Are we still allowed to crash at your place?"
"Did you get kicked out of being demons?" There's a snort of laughter on Naruto's voice as he spoke.
"No, we just need somewhere to stay," Sakura said.
"Why don't you go find someone else to kill, it'd do you some good," Naruto said, "You both look kind of..."
He squints a bit as he stares at them.
"Starved."
"Apparently that's because of you," Sasuke said.
Naruto went ramrod straight, "Because of me?"
"You ooze life force all the time, so much that we just pick it up without even realizing it. It's enough to keep us from withering without killing every other night," Sakura explained, "It probably has something to do with those whiskers on your face." In truth, both Sasuke and Sakura were heavily aware of the fact they were also eating up Kurama's chakra alongside Naruto's. But again, that's also a name that's been lost to the track of time. Only the essence of the monster passed down from person to person for eons as nothing more than a curse- one with visual tells that can be covered with makeup these days.
"Is that a compliment...?"
"A very high compliment," Sasuke assured, "So we need you."
"What? Too much effort to go have fun?" Naruto asked.
"We like you."
"You already know this."
"You're delicious to be frank."
"Why waste our time out there when we could be with you instead?"
"It's free food and an adorable partner."
"A two for one deal like none other."
"We'd be fools to pass up the chance."
Red was slowly rising to Naruto's face the entire time they took turns speaking, "Partner?"
"Or friend," Sasuke offered, "We'd understand if you don't want to partner with demons."
"What? No- hell no, that was just. I'm flattered," Naruto said, trying to recover, horribly fumbling his words as he did so, "I didn't think demons could love."
Sakura laughs a little bit, "That's a common misconception."
"Nobody thinks animals can love either," Sasuke said, "But they can, and so can we."
"So do you?" Naruto asked. He didn't mean to. Not really. Words formed in his head and as fast as he thought them up they were falling out of his mouth and dead in the air.
Neither Sasuke nor Sakura speak.
"If you don't you can keep being parasites, I don't mind," Naruto said.
Sasuke laughs. It's a quiet and subtle sound really, but entirely earnest. One that's near completely foreign to Naruto. "You're so fucking dense, Naruto."
Sakura has the guts to lean over the table and grab his face. She presses a kiss to his check that's almost dizzying after the absence of them for so long. "You're oblivious as hell."
"I'll take that as a yes then."

I need a fanfic where Obito marries Rin and Sasuke and Naruto get together, so Kakashi and Sakura start platonically living together.
It's mostly a character study??? Maybe?? On how Kakashi already devoted himself to protecting her if Sasuke and Naruto weren't around, on how they are so similar, how it feels to be left behind even if your team doesn't realize it.
If you think about it?
Well, imagine Sakura and Kakashi both fell for an Uchiha and had a jinchuriki be in love with them, only for the Uchiha to be interested only in your jinchuriki friend. Soon they get together and you start to feel like you're in the middle of something you are not part of. You still know they love you a lot, but it's not like you can erase the romance you were waiting for from your dreams.
And then you can add the fact that Gai and Rock Lee are kinda obsessed (in the good sense!) with Sakura and Kakashi. Neither Sakura nor Kakashi find them annoying, since Rock Lee and Gai were a source of strength when their team couldn't be there for them. Gai and Lee are their inspiration in so many senses. It's just another relationship they share, weirdly, funnily.
Of course they have their unique bonds, like the one Sakura shares with Ino, or the one Kakashi has with Tenzo. It doesn't mean that the themes are not shared: You see, Tenzo's wood release and Ino's whole deal with flowers are all about bloom and growth. Tenzo is that solid surface Kakashi can rely on when he feels he can't keep standing, the scarecrow that needs something to keep him upright. Ino is that force urging Sakura to open up to the world, to stop hiding who Sakura is for the sake of others; Ino is the gardener and Sakura is the flower.
There's the issue with their parents, who were not bad people, but who weren't there for Kakashi and Sakura while they grew up. Even when they love their parents, there's a void there, a tension, some distance that resonates and makes the absence loud and clear. Who Kakashi and Sakura are is not a product of some parenting: it's personal effort and being obstinate to no end.
Kakashi and Sakura greatly value each other. The proof is in the way they refuse to let each other carry alone their burdens. It's never as clear as it is when Sasuke is involved: in the Land of Iron, they tried to kill Sasuke to take the burden of killing a friend from Naruto's shoulders, but also because Kakashi didn't want that for Sakura either and she didn't want Kakashi to deal with it alone. Later, in the fight with Kaguya, Sasuke compares Kakashi to Sakura in how useless they were because they were mere humans in a fight with (basically) some goddess.
Kakashi and Sakura both suffer for not being able to free their teammates from the hurt. There's no doubt they would if they could. Not being strong enough, not being fast or skilled enough, being "useless" is their greatest nightmare. There isn't a day that Kakashi and Sakura don't hate their own weaknesses, there's not a night that they don't hate themselves for not being able to do more.
I don't know... It'd be interesting to study Kakashi in a more romantic light while Sakura is able to have more of a platonic centric growth. It would be entertaining, at least. What if Kakashi finally confesses out loud that he was in love, but he can only do it because he knows Sakura might be the only other person alive who understands what it is like to love an Uchiha? What if it is Kakashi who helps Sakura realize how many friends are there for her? How she can find fulfilment outside of the promises and dreams that are no more?
I also like a lot to see serious platonic relationships with age gaps, where the adult doesn't take any advantage given the difference in their experience and shows they can learn from the younger one.
A relationship that can't be described with nuclear family roles (father & daughter), the type where hierarchical roles are part of the drama because they see each other as equals, but even then they can't shake their responsibilities for the sake of their bond (Kakashi forced to send Sakura on a dangerous mission because he's the Hokage and she's a kunoichi, or Kakashi very openly refusing to use his status as her former sensei to force her to do something she doesn't want to do).
They are friends, just not the typical one... They're two different types of mirrors, reflecting broken images. And if they find in each other a bit of all the things they've lost and missed and they have hoped for, not enough to replace the originals but enough to lessen the hurt? Then, it's only natural they find easy companionship in each other.
#this is extremely self-indulgent for my aroace heart#listen healthy meaningful relationships with age gaps between people that are not blood related are vital for a better world#btw this is an extremely queer au in the aromantic and asexual aspects#non typical friendships and found families are queer!!!!!#it could perfectly end up in each team having two different poly situations without it defeating the purpose of romance not being the focus#the romance would have to come waaaaaaay later almost in the end and it has to be a minor theme compared to the Kakashi-Sakura bond#they keep their identities fairly separated they keep their personalities and their own traits#Kakashi doesn't have to become Sakura and Sakura doesn't have to become Kakashi they love each other for who they are#anyway enough of ranting#naruto#sakura haruno#kakashi hatake#team 7#team kakashi#naruto shippuden#naruto classic

i think what intrigues me most about naruto and it as a vessel for fan work is the team dynamics. it is shown that genin teams form super strong bonds, between people that would hate each other otherwise. i can’t handle that the sanin and team 7 are the exact same situation. that team 8 is still so close and loves each other, and that ino-shika-cho are close and love each other but there’s been GENERATIONS of them. kakashi mourns his team often, he’s a teammate without a team. we know hiruzen is still influenced by his team members as hokage. it’s just so ripe for opportunity in fic or art.
#if i say this contributes to my fondness of poly in fanworks#naruto textpost#naruto#naruto fanfic#naruto fandom#team 7

Summary: Task Force 141 operates successfully without an omega, at least that’s what Price has been saying since its formation. Two alphas and two betas balance the pack just fine, and they have the numbers to prove it.
It works for a while, until the Omega Initiative is born and the 141 find themselves having to adjust to the sudden addition of an omega to their pack. Fresh out of an institute, you’re hardly fit for their secretive, dangerous world, or so Price thinks.
As each member of the team gets closer to you, things begin to come to light, not only about you but about the decision to force you into their lives.
Maybe, just maybe, Price was wrong and the 141 does need an omega after all.
Pairings: Poly 141 x reader, Price x Gaz, Ghost x Soap

“Pads!” Remus shouts across the ice. “Focus!”
Sirius’ cheeks pinken slightly as he tears his stare away from the Russian soloist practicing her quads. You laugh and say something to him that makes him pinch your waist meanly, as if you’ve been acting any better.
You and Sirius are completely starstruck. Remus wants to be irritated at your distractibility, but it’s sort of adorable. You nearly fall on your bum watching the Austrian team run drills, Sirius is too busy eye-flirting with a Swedish skater to remember he’s supposed to be going into a turn, and you both stop your routine entirely when the Canadian duo steps out onto the ice.
You and Sirius draw plenty of stares yourselves, though naturally only Sirius appears to notice. He shoots a wink at a skater admiring him and a glare at another looking too closely at you, his hand possessively on your lower back anytime you’re not running your routine.
Altogether it means you have to spend a couple of extra hours learning to work through this specific brand of stage fright and running your drills again after you all get your heads turned multiple times, but Remus lets it slide. He remembers being just as dazzled during his first Olympics, seventeen years old and feeling like he’d somehow snuck into the hall of fame, an imposter among legends.
Part of him hopes that the embarrassment of having to do a half-ass death spiral in front of so many professionals will make Sirius finally go all the way, but no such luck. He keeps you firmly above where you ought to be, expression impassive even as Remus can see you pleading with him with your eyes. Still, the rest of the routine goes well, and Remus tries not to let it get under his skin. He hopes you’re right and Sirius really will pull through in the final hour; your faith in your partner is absolute, and Remus finds it easy to put his faith in you.
He lets you loose to spend the afternoon as you’d like, but it comes as no surprise when he sees you both on the ice again. Remus knows you’ve likely got plenty of nerves to work off. It’s one thing to compete in your home country, another entirely to represent your home country while competing amongst the best figure skaters in the world. He calls you off the ice before one of you can overexert yourselves and pull something. Sirius swears up and down that his ankle hasn’t bothered him since the day after he hurt it, and Remus hasn’t seen anything to make him suspect differently, but he knows better than to take risks with a healing injury. You spend the rest of the afternoon playing cards and gambling for candies in Sirius’ room.
Eventually you disperse to go to bed. Remus’ hip has been bothering him since the flight the previous day, so he goes on a walk to stretch it out. It’s odd, he thinks, how easy things have come to feel between the three of you. When he first arrived, Remus had every intention of setting up strict professional boundaries, of knowing you only as your coach and seeing you only during practice times. And then you started practicing together, and it seemed like his boundaries wouldn’t even be necessary. Sirius hated him, and besides that the two of you existed in a bubble no one could penetrate, intimate and trusting only each other. Now, after learning about what your former coach did to you, Remus understands why that was necessary. You were protecting each other, safeguarding your partnership and your careers. It would have made sense for you to keep Remus at more than an arm’s length, taking his coaching with grains of salt and keeping him well away from your private lives.
But then there have been days like today. Still bickering with Sirius, still watching the two of you interact with a familiarity only years of history can grant, but feeling warm and welcome despite it all. It feels easy, to tease Sirius and let him snipe back. To let you lean your shoulder into his and not move away. It feels good.
Remus’ hip is feeling fairly good too by the time he gets back, sore from the exercise but not so stiff. As he makes his way to his room, passing Sirius’ and then yours on the way, he sees light sneaking through the crack underneath your door.
He frowns. It’s late, and you’re meant to practice again early tomorrow morning, your last day of practice before you compete. You should be well rested. As he approaches your door, he hears sound coming from inside. Low, crackling voices, and a song that tugs at the fringes of his memory. Then a sound he knows too well, the shushing of skates on ice.
Remus knocks. The door is thin enough that he hears your little gasp and a quiet snap, and when you say “come in,” it sounds like a question.
He suppresses a smile, opening your door cautiously in case you didn’t really mean it.
You’re sitting on your bed, one hand atop your shut laptop. “Hi.”
“Hi,” he says, leaning against the doorway. “It’s late.”
“I know.” You look almost shy. Between that and the pajamas you have on, plaid little shorts and a bulky sweatshirt, Remus has the urge to pinch your chin between his fingers. “Sorry, I was just watching some, um…”
“Figure skating videos.” Your lips part, and he says, “I could hear them from outside.”
“Oh.” You laugh. It’s a nice sound, one Remus can happily say he’s come to know well, but this one is woven through with nerves. “That’s embarrassing.”
“Why is it embarrassing?” he asks honestly. “It’s normal to want to study your competition. And they’re fun, I still watch them all of the time.”
“It’s not…” You give him a tentative look, then scoot over on your bed. “Do you want to see?”
Remus can’t imagine you’re watching anything he hasn’t seen a million times, but he is curious which are your favorites. He’s careful to sit on top of your covers, a few inches between your leg and his. The bed doesn’t allow for anything more.
“Fuck, did they really have to go back to making them out of cardboard?”
That gets another nervous laugh out of you as you open your laptop screen, playing the video. And Remus knows then where he’s heard the music before. It’s his music. You’re watching his old routine, a niche one from a small competition back in Wales. Remus was fourteen when this was filmed.
He glances at you, and you’re watching the video with your bottom lip trapped between your teeth, the colors of the screen dancing across your eyes.
“I’ve always admired how tight your form was,” you say. “You were so young, but it was obvious you were putting the work in.”
“I practiced a lot,” Remus agrees. “Too much, really.”
The nostalgia he feels for figure skating is bittersweet when he watches videos like this. He remembers spending all his time in the rink, every hour he wasn’t in school or at home, nothing spared for friends or hobbies. He did love it, but in loving it he forgot to build a life outside of it. Life was constant motion, training and competitions and awards whirling around him like the rink during a spin; by the time he had his accident anyone that might have been his friend had their own friends, and Remus realized he may have been lonely for years.
“I’m really glad you agreed to coach us.” You’re still watching the video, young Remus doing a camel spin. “You’ve made us a lot better, both of us. I know Sirius is going to end up fixing the spiral, and I’m going to try my best, and…I really hope we can make you proud.”
“You will,” Remus says, instead of you already do. It feels wrong to take any credit for how incredible you are, either one of you, but that is what he feels when he sees you out on the ice. Proud. He looks at you carefully. “You’ve seemed wound pretty tightly lately.”
Your eyes drop, no longer looking at young Remus but not at the older one either.
“It’s alright to be nervous,” he says gently, “so long as you know that you deserve to be here. You’re going to do great.”
You rub your lips together. “Were you nervous during your Olympics? Is it okay for you to talk about?”
“Yeah,” Remus says, a bit surprised, “it’s fine. I was nervous. I was…” he chuckles “I was freaking out, honestly. But when I got out there, it was really just like any rink. The music and the routine were the same, so I just let myself get lost in it. I almost forgot where I was until it was over, and people were waving flags at me and all that from the stands.” He feels his lips curve with the memory. Bumps your shoulder lightly with his. “It’s not so bad. Anyway, I think it’s got to be better to go through it with someone else. I was on my own, but you’ll have Sirius with you.”
You give him a little sideways smile. “And you, right?”
A fond warmth blooms in Remus’ chest. “And me.”
“Has it been difficult for you to coach us?” you ask him tentatively. “I mean, to come back?”
Remus takes a deep breath. “Yeah,” he says after a minute. “At first, it really was. I’m not proud of it, and I don’t think I really knew it at the time, but I was jealous of both of you. Anytime you did something differently than I would have, I got so frustrated that you were throwing away these opportunities I would kill to have again. It was easy to look at either one of you and wish I was in your place.”
You’re nodding, not a trace of hurt or offense in your expression. You look at him like you understand.
“But that stopped a long time ago,” he says. “After I worked with you for longer, it became clear you’re both very different skaters than I was.” You huff a laugh, and Remus nudges your shoulder admonishingly. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think early on I wasn’t a very good coach to you because I couldn’t see your individual strengths. But now I think I can, and it’s really a privilege to watch you skate together. It’s lovely. And I’ve loved getting to know you and Sirius, too. So, yeah, it was difficult at first, but I’m really glad I came on. And I’m glad you were patient enough to let me stay.”
That got a bit more earnest than he intended. Remus feels heat rise to his face, but you’re still nodding, thoughtful, like you’re trying to wrap your head around it. He sees you rub your lips together again.
“I really want to do well,” you say softly, “but I’m not the skater Sirius is. I don’t have his natural talent, and I don’t flourish under pressure the way he does. I—that’s usually when I mess up.” Remus’ chest aches at the vulnerability in your voice, his hand moving unconsciously to cover yours on the bed. Some of the tension goes out of you at the touch. “I’ve tried my whole life to keep up with him, but I’m never quite there, and you guys, you’ve both been these incredible, talented skaters…” Your eyes meet his, timid and ashamed. “I’m afraid I’m going to let you both down.”
“Are you kidding?” You drop your gaze, and a surprised little laugh trips off Remus’ tongue as he ducks his head to follow, holding your hand more securely. “I’m sorry, that was rash, but really. How can you think that? You’re one of the most talented skaters I’ve ever seen.”
You’re still avoiding his gaze. He takes your chin in his hand, gentle, an encouragement more than anything, but you let him turn you towards him.
“I don’t care how much of it comes from natural aptitude,” he says firmly. “You’re an incredible skater. Even when I didn’t know you at all, it was obvious that you care about this more than Sirius or I likely ever have. That’s important. You can see it in how hard you train, and in how you move on the ice.” Remus shakes his head, expelling a breath. “It’s mesmerizing. You’re beautiful to watch.”
You’re not shying away from him now, but Remus doesn’t let go of you. Your expression is wide open, diffident but curious. He goes on.
“The way you skate, it’s not just about the motions or the art of it, it’s joyous. Anyone can see how happy you are out there. That’s what makes you so good. You really love it.”
“You did, too,” you murmur.
His voice softens in kind. “I did. But not the way you do.”
Your eyes lower, but this time he allows you it. Remus is suddenly acutely aware of your leg where it's pressed up against his, of his own heartbeat. He’s still holding your hand.
You wet your lips. “Do you really mean all that?”
“Why would I give you a whole speech I didn’t believe?”
You crack a smile. “Some coaches call it a pep talk.”
“You’re beautiful to watch,” he says again, voice dropping to a murmur as he realizes you’re staring at his lips. He breathes in, and the distance between you lessens. “You’re beautiful.”
Remus knows he’s judged you rightly when your hand comes around his waist, pressing into the softness of his jumper to glean an impression of the skin underneath. You kiss like you skate, with a sweet eagerness, ready to explore and wanting to learn. Your lips part, inspiring a similar parting in Remus, and you let out a breath with a soft humming sound.
Remus' nerves are alight underneath your hand on his side. He angles his torso to get you closer, free hand coasting up your thigh. Your fingers bunch in his jumper, kisses picking up heat as he lets his hand settle at the small of your back, an echo of how Sirius touched you this morning when—
Sirius.
Remus draws away from you so suddenly he hears you gasp. He still has your face in his hand, can feel the flustered warmth of it before he removes that too, putting distance between you.
“Sorry.” His voice is hoarse. Guilt burns in the back of his throat. “Sorry, it’s not you. I just, I—”
Sirius. Sirius. Sirius.
“I didn’t think that through.” He can feel his heartbeat in his mouth. Sirius is in love with you. Remus is only just starting to feel like a part of your team, but this could send you all back in time. Kissing one of his skaters, who the other is in love with? His stomach hurts. “I’m your coach, and you—we have a big competition coming up. I shouldn’t have done that.”
He edges off your bed, looking at you while he does. Your lips are still parted, eyes wide.
“It was a really shit idea,” he says, “and I’m so sorry. It’s my fault.”
You rub your lips together. Remus feels it like you’re still moving them against his own. “It’s fine,” you say on a breath. “We can forget it.”
“I’m so sorry,” he says again.
“It’s okay.” You’re shaking your head, and he’s backing away, both of you like deer caught in headlights. “You’re right, it was silly. We’re professionals, we can get past it.”
Remus feels himself nodding, feels the handle of your door in his hand.
“Practice in the morning?” you ask weakly.
He pushes out a breath as he opens the door. “Yeah. Six thirty.”

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay on this one. I've been trying to branch out a bit with my writing over the last little bit to keep the inspiration going.
To be honest, I'm feeling a little lost with this story. I'm going to continue writing it, don't worry! But I really only properly planned up until the Christmas chapter, so if anyone has any ideas of what they'd like to see happen, feel free to send me a request!
--
The door closed behind you with a loud thump. You leaned your head on it for a moment, panting to catch you breath.
It had been a particularly long day at work. Most of the staff were off sick due to a flu outbreak and it meant that all the more responsibility fell on you. On top of that, you'd felt extremely exhausted all day. You weren't sure if it was from being overworked or a lack of sleep or some twisted combination of the two but your limbs felt like lead and your eyes had kept falling shut from where they were fixated on the screen of your computer.
The walk up the stairs had been torture paired with the fatigue that was consuming your bones and you felt your legs ache as you entered the hall of your apartment.
"Are you alright?"
You jumped as a voice emerged from behind you and you swung around to see Remus seated on the couch with a book in hand.
"Jesus!" you shouted, clutching a hand to your chest.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
You shook your head, sniffling slightly. "No it's fine. I just... didn't expect you to be sitting there."
He chuckled dryly. "Right, well no one is home so I thought I'd make use of the living room for a bit."
"Right..."
James had left two days ago for some sort of 'team building' trip with his workmates and you supposed Sirius had a gig tonight with the band, leaving only you and Remus in the apartment. As happy as you were that you didn't have to interact with Sirius tonight (you were still upset with him and really didn't have the energy right now to put on a happy face), you sort of wished James was there to ease the tension. Things had been more amicable with Remus lately. His Christmas gift had helped to ease some of the animosity between you, but you were still far from friends. You barely talked outside of necessary pleasantries and you definitely never spent time alone together.
You cleared your throat awkwardly but it quickly morphed into a loud cough. Remus looked up from his book once more, his brows furrowed as he assessed you from across the room.
"That doesn't sound good. Are you feeling okay?"
You huffed out a breath, throwing your bag down on the kitchen counter and running a hand over your face.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine. Just a bit tired," you murmured awkwardly. "I think I'll have an early night."
Swiftly, you began moving across the room towards the bathroom.
"Okay but-"
You shut the door with a sigh before Remus was able to continue.
You leaned back against the bathroom door, feeling a drop of sweat trail from your hairline and down the side of your face. If you were being completely honest, you felt like shit. You were just too embarrassed to admit you felt like shit in front of Remus.
You took a deep breath and straightened up, hoping a shower would help you feel a little more like yourself.
You stripped off, shivering in the cool air of the bathroom and turned the shower nob. Then you stepped under the spray, letting the warm water wash over you as the room began to fill with steam.
You didn't know how long you stood under the water, letting it sooth your aching bones but once you stepped out, you noticed that the sky outside the bathroom window had grown dark.
Slowly you trudged from the bathroom to your bedroom at the end of the hallway, pulling on your comfiest pajamas. With the little energy you had left, you shuffled out into the living area in the hopes of finding some leftovers in the fridge to at eat for dinner before you went to bed and inevitably slept for the next 48 hours.
As you emerged from the hallway, you noticed that you had begun to feel substantially worse. You were shivering despite wearing your thickest woolen pajamas, but somehow you were sweating at the same time.
You were glad to see that Remus had retired to his bedroom for the evening, not wanting him to see you in such a pathetic state. Your legs felt like they had cinderblocks tied to them, every step taking an immense amount of your dwindling energy.
As you made your way through the room, you suddenly began to feel... odd. You're head felt heavy, your vision darkening around the edges.
You came to a halt beside the couch, blinking absently and taking a second to catch your breath but it didn't seem to help all that much. Then, without warning, everything went black.
--
"Y/n?..."
"...hey, can you hear me?"
There was a voice coming from somewhere above you but you couldn't quite place who's it was.
You blinked slowly, awareness returning to your foggy mind. As you vision cleared, the first thing you saw were Remus' concerned chocolate eyes boring down on you.
"Hey, are you okay? You with me now?"
It was then his full face came into frame. Looking around, you realised that you were lying on the floor beside the coffee table, your feet resting on a pile of couch cushions. Remus was on his knees beside you, leaning down with a hand resting gently on top of your head.
You mustered a nod, a wave of embarrassment rippling through you.
"Okay, that's good," he murmured kindly. "Did you hit your head?"
"I- um," you took stock of how you were feeling. You were uncomfortable and still vaguely dizzy. Your elbow was throbbing from where you must've hit it on the corner of the coffee table as you fell but other than that, you didn't seem to have injured yourself too badly.
"N-no. I don't think so."
Remus nodded, his brows pinching in thought as he scanned through the next steps in his head.
"How many fingers am I holding up?"
He flashed a peace sign in your direction.
"Two."
"Good, that's good. Do you think you feel ready to sit up?"
"Y-yeah... I think so," you mumbled unsurely.
"Okay, I'll help you. Take your time," he responded in a voice more gentle than you'd ever heard him speak in - to you at least.
He shuffled around a little bit so he was rested at your hip and then with steady hands placed under your back, he helped you sit up. The room tilted as you came upright but not nearly as violently as it had before.
Then, Remus guided you so that you were leaning back against the edge of the couch. He sat back on his knees, observing your form and you let out a heavy sigh, shaking with embarrassment - or maybe that was from the fever.
"Sorry about all this," you mumbled, shutting your eyes in the hopes of blocking out Remus' devastatingly concerned facial expression.
"It's not your fault," he was quick to reassure. "Besides, I'm a med student. You've given me an opportunity to test my knowledge on something practical."
You knew he was joking but your cheeks flushed nonetheless.
"It's really fine," he stated sincerely, upon noticing the mortification written across your face. "I just want to make sure you're okay. Your fever is pretty high."
"It is?"
He chuckled half-heartedly. "Yes. I would recommend that next time you don't take a scorching hot shower when your temperature is already at 39 degrees."
You cringed. "So this whole fainting ordeal could've been avoided then?"
"In theory, yes."
You groaned and covered your face with your hand. "Well on that note, I think I'm just going to go to bed."
You moved to pull yourself up but Remus rushed to grasp your arms on the way.
"Woah, hey, let me help you. You shouldn't be moving around too much yet."
"Right, sorry," you uttered awkwardly.
"It's okay. Here," with gentle precision, Remus got to his feet and lifted your arm around his shoulders. With so little energy remaining, you weren't bothered to be self-conscious as you leaned your weight against him and the two of you hobbled down the hall into your room.
When he deposited you into your bed, you immediately curled up in the sheets, shutting your eyes.
However, they popped open once again when you felt something cool press against your forehead only moments later.
You looked up to see Remus retreating from your room after laying a cool towel across your feverish forehead. As you drifted off into a fitful sleep, your last thought was about how he'd never been in your room before. You wondered if you'd remembered to tidy it.
--
You were running through a dark dense forest. Something was chasing you. You couldn't quite make out what it was but you knew it was angry.
You tried to move faster but as you ran, the forest grew wider and longer and darker. The branches were becoming thicker, they scratched your arms as you waded through the trees. You could hear the creature growling behind you. It was getting closer. You were panting and sweating, pushing yourself as fast as you could go but it felt as though the forest floor was covered in sand, your feet sinking into it every time they hit the ground.
You pushed on, carrying yourself forward, willing yourself to pick up the pace.
Then the ground dropped away completely. A cliff ledge had emerged in front of you and before you could stop yourself, you'd reached it.
Then you were falling.
--
You awoke with a start, gasping and panting for air. You were drenched in sweat, tangled up in your crumpled bed sheets. It was too hot, almost unbearably so. You thrashed around frantically for some semblance of relief.
It was at that moment, your door creaked open and a tentative Remus entered your room. He froze when he noticed you were awake and gaping at him with wide eyes.
"I just came in to check on you. How are you feeling?"
You went to respond but were overtaken with a slew of coughing that wracked through your body. Remus was at your side in an instant, a gentle hand placed on your back as you rode out the fit.
"I think it's time for some medicine," he mumbled under his breath, likely directed more towards himself than you.
It was then that you noticed the tray of items he'd placed on the table beside your bed. There was a bottle of water and an assortment of medicines as well as a thermometer which he picked up and proceeded to press into your ear.
You were so out of it, practically delirious with fever, that it took you a moment to realise how unusual this situation was. Remus - the same roommate who had been consistently cold and abrasive towards you in the months since you moved in - was now sitting at your bedside taking care of you while you were ill. It was completely unexpected, although you had to admit, not unwelcome. Something inside you stirred at the care he was showing you.
The pulled away, humming disapprovingly at the reading. You watched him with wide eyes as he busied himself reading medicine labels.
"Here, take these," he told you and dropped an assortment of pills into your hand. Then he uncapped the water bottle and handed it to you.
After you'd taken the medicine he gave you, he encouraged you to nestle back down under your covers and he pulled your duvet up to your chin.
"Try to get some sleep. Hopefully you'll feel better with a bit of rest," he told you.
He then turned, beginning to walk towards the doorway but you grabbed a hold of his wrist before he was able to leave.
"Remus," you muttered weakly, looking up at him with big, imploring eyes. Maybe it was the medicine or the fever, you weren't really sure, but an unwarranted confidence had begun to possess you.
He turned to look at you, his eyebrow raised in concern.
"Will you stay with me? Just until I fall asleep?"
He paused for a moment, clearly surprised as he pondered the request. Then he looked back at you, taking in your pathetic form and he sighed, his shoulders relaxing.
"Okay. I can do that."
You wriggled over a little, patting the left side of your bed. Remus hesitantly took a seat on top of the covers, looking very out of place in your bedroom.
Subconsciously, you edged towards him, drawn into his body heat as you moved to a comfortable position.
Your eyes grew heavier as the effects of the medicine began to take hold. However, as sleep claimed you, a few last words rolled off your tongue before you could stop them.
"Why don't you like me Remus?"
He turned to you, raising an eyebrow as his gaze cast over your form.
"I mean, I try really hard to be your friend and I want us to be closer but you always treat me like you don't care. I don't know what I've done wrong."
Remus sighed heavily. "That's not true, Y/n. I do care about you. I just... I was worried that when you moved in, the dynamic with my friend group was going to change and I didn't know how to deal with it. But I'm sorry that I took it out on you. It was my issue, not yours and I should've been kinder. The truth is, I-"
He was cut short when you let out a congested snore beside him. He looked down to notice that your breathing had evened out and you'd drifted off into a semi-peaceful sleep, your warm head pressed up against his hip.
He couldn't suppress the fond smile that crossed his features at the sight. With a feather-light touch, he leaned down and pressed a small kiss to your forehead.
--
It was just past one in the morning when Sirius returned from a gig with his band at a Pub down the road.
It had been a good night. The crowd was energetic and they didn't mess up any of their set-list. It was a great show and he'd hung around afterwards for a couple of drinks and a bit of flirting with a few of the girls who'd been in the front of the crowd. However, despite the success of the evening, something felt like it was... missing somehow.
Even sitting across from an eager and curvaceous ginger, with a free beer in hand, his mind couldn't help but linger on... you. This was something that had happened more times then he cared to admit over the past few weeks.
To his own surprise, he'd turned down her advances in favour of heading home to your company. He hoped you'd still be awake as you sometimes were at this time on a Friday night. He expected to find you binge-watching Modern Family in the living room with a glass of wine in hand.
However, when he arrived back at the house, he was disappointed to find the space devoid of human life.
He took off his leather jacket and hung it on the rack by the door as his eyes scanned the empty living room. When he walked down the hallway, he was happy to see that there was a faint light coming from under your door.
He carefully pushed it open, not wanting to disturb you if you were writing. To his surprise, the sight he was met with was far from the one he expected.
There was Remus, sitting on your bed, reading a book in the soft glow of your bedside lamp while you were practically curled up in his lap, your breathing ragged as you slept.
Remus looked up to meet his friend's wide eyes as he observed the scene before him.
"Oh, hi. You're back earlier than expected."
Sirius blinked at him for a moment, trying to act nonchalant as he regained his bearings.
"Ah yeah. I guess I just wasn't feeling it tonight," then he gestured towards you. "Is she okay?"
Remus just nodded, sending his friend a soft smile. "Yeah. She's a little under the weather but seems to be a little better now."
He brushed a few fingers over your forehead, stroking some hair away from you eyes in the process as he got a gage of your temperature.
Sirius' heart clenched in a way he couldn't quite make sense of as he watched the moment unfold.
"She had a pretty high fever earlier," Remus explained. "But we managed to get it down."
"Ah, right," Sirius muttered, leaning against the doorframe. "Is... um, is there anything I can do? or..."
Remus gently shook his head. "Thanks for the offer but I think we'll be fine."
"Okay, well... I'll leave you to it then," Sirius stated with a tight-lipped smile.
"Okay, goodnight. Sleep well, Sirius."
"You too, Rem," He responded, closing the door behind him.
He let out a huff of air once he was out of earshot. There were a bunch of unexplainable feelings swirling inside of him. Was he jealous? No that wasn't it. It was something else. An odd sort of ache that lingered inside of him, a yearning for something that he couldn't quite place.
All he knew was that he didn't like it.

you have never known peace throughout your existence on this planet, where the corrupts abidingly reign destruction and inequity across continents, because just when you thought that you could finally seek solitude, you are once again being thrust into the martial world that you thought you had left behind for good, and this time, a task force awaits you.
the missions that await you and the rest of your comrades are paramount, which also means teamwork is essential in order to succeed, but some of your teammates have expressed their detestation towards you from the moment you entered the task force for reasons beyond your comprehension. you find it infuriating that they view you as their enemy when the real threats lie beyond the borders.
palpable tensions continue to mount specifically between you and the four highly attractive soldiers, and you lack the fortitude to resist breaking the forbidden boundaries. above all, you can feel your heart beating in a familiar cadence that once died when they abandoned you in the very place where it all started many years ago. it is ironic how they each ignite the infuriating fire in your heart, and yet you have never felt alive like you are now. you had hoped that their hearts awakened the way they do yours, but at the same time, you fear that everything will crumble with all sorts of obstacles hurtling towards your task force, and so you hope for them to live alive, even if it means giving them your once-shattered heart for the second time just to keep theirs beating.

The sanctuary was nothing like they’d expected.
Dense fog clung to the forest floor, muffling their footsteps and swallowing every sound. Towering trees stretched endlessly above them, their branches twisted together like ancient hands guarding the sanctuary’s secrets. The air was thick and damp, carrying scents of moss and earth, tinged with hints of wild animals and faint traces of something else—something that felt old, almost sacred. It was a place untouched by the outside world, a haven carved out of the wilderness, and every instinct in Price told him they were being watched.
Captain Price led the way through the misty forest, his senses heightened, the quiet hum of wolf instincts ever-present in his mind. His eyes scanned the shadows, alert for any sign of movement, every fiber of him tuned to the pulse of the forest. Behind him, Ghost moved like a wraith, his panther-like form blending seamlessly into the darkness, each step careful and deliberate, his presence almost an extension of the shadows themselves. Gaz circled above in falcon form, his sharp eyes piercing through the canopy, scanning the surrounding trees with precision, watching for anything out of the ordinary. Soap followed close to Price, his husky ears perked and alert, his energy barely contained, as if every sound was calling him to explore.
As a pack, they moved seamlessly, each member adapting to the environment, their hybrid senses complementing each other. The forest around them was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of birds and insects absent as though the sanctuary itself was holding its breath. Just as Price was about to signal for a halt, Gaz’s voice crackled softly through the comms, a low murmur that barely broke the stillness.
“Got movement, Cap. Northwest, closing fast. Looks like we’ve got company.”
Price’s ear twitched, picking up the faint rustling of leaves from the direction Gaz had indicated. He raised a hand, signaling the others to stop, his body tensing as he scanned the shadows ahead. His gaze sharpened, waiting for any sign of a threat, when a sudden flash of red fur caught his eye, there and gone again, darting through the underbrush with silent grace and a speed that suggested they weren’t alone.
“It’s a fox,” Price muttered under his breath, though he didn’t relax, his hand hovering near his weapon just in case.
Moments later, a figure emerged from the trees, moving with a fluid confidence that put the entire team on edge. It was a fox hybrid, their stature smaller than the 141 members but exuding an unmistakable presence. Their sharp, glinting eyes danced over each of them, assessing, appraising, lingering just a moment longer on Ghost before finally settling on Price.
“Well, well,” the fox drawled, their voice carrying a playful yet dangerous edge as they crossed their arms. “More rogues, I assume? You’re not exactly blending in.”
The fox’s sly smile and relaxed stance belied a readiness, a coiled energy that suggested they could vanish or attack in an instant if provoked. Price held their gaze steadily, refusing to let himself be rattled. “We’re just passing through,” he said, his voice steady, but every word measured.
The fox tilted their head, studying them intently with a glimmer of amusement in their eyes. “Nobody just passes through here,” they replied, one brow raised as they spoke. “But if you’re here to help, then maybe we can have a chat. Otherwise…” They trailed off, their fingers twitching ever so slightly, a subtle hint that they could disappear into the shadows in a heartbeat if they chose.
Price exchanged a glance with Soap, who was watching the fox intently, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I like ‘em already,” he whispered to Ghost, whose only response was a quiet, amused huff from under his mask.
The fox’s gaze flickered between them, clearly aware of the silent exchanges. “So, are you going to keep staring?” they teased, their voice laced with a challenge. “Or should I show you somewhere a bit safer than out here?”
“Lead the way,” Price replied, stepping forward, his voice a quiet command as he signaled to the others to follow.
The fox hybrid didn’t hesitate, moving deeper into the forest with a quick, confident stride, winding through paths that seemed invisible to anyone who hadn’t been born to this place. As they walked, the fog grew thicker, shrouding the trees in a ghostly mist that muted every sound and blurred the edges of the world around them. It was as if the sanctuary itself was wrapping them in secrecy, guarding its mysteries from prying eyes.
They came to an abrupt stop near a secluded glade where a small fire flickered, casting a warm, welcoming glow against the cold mist. The fox turned to them, their gaze unwavering as they gestured for them to sit around the fire. Soap dropped down with a grin, his tail wagging with an eagerness that made Price feel the faintest sense of relief at being out of the open, if only for a moment.
“I’ll make this quick,” the fox began, folding their arms across their chest as they met each team member’s gaze. “There’s a group of rogues here, causing chaos for hybrids and humans alike. They’re not subtle, and they’re dangerous. If you’re here to help with that, then I can give you intel—maybe even show you some safe paths.”
Price studied them carefully, his expression unreadable. “And what’s in it for you?”
The fox shrugged, a slight smile tugging at the corner of their mouth. “I don’t trust anyone to do a job properly unless I’m involved. Besides, you all look like you could use a bit of help.”
Soap chuckled, an amused spark in his eyes as he looked the fox over with admiration. “You’re not wrong about that.”
Ghost’s voice cut in, low and sharp as he fixed the fox with a piercing stare. “And how do we know we can trust you?”
The fox met Ghost’s gaze without flinching, their own expression softening slightly. “You don’t,” they replied simply. “But you can trust that I don’t want those rogues overrunning my home.” For the first time, Price caught a glimpse of something deeper beneath their confident demeanor—a hint of loyalty, a fierce protectiveness that resonated with him.
The fox shifted, stretching out with a lazy elegance as their red tail curled around them, a playful glint returning to their eyes as they looked each of them in turn. “Well, boys, do we have a deal?”
Price didn’t need to look back at his team to know their answer. He extended his hand, sealing the alliance with a firm nod, his gaze steady. “Looks like we’re in this together.”

there's a man in the woods (1)
rhysand prequel, part two, part three, part four
(sorry for the long synopsis)
rhysand, azriel, and cassian were blessed by the cauldron with a mate. although, the circumstances were never seen before. the three males each had a mate, and it turned out to be the same female they were each bound to; bambi. they had spent months trying to track down the female that had been haunting their dreams and they finally did. she was tamlin's "mate". he had somehow discovered bambi was the rhysand's mate, so he took her as his own lover to spite him. tamlin still blamed rhysand for the death of his true mate, rhysand's sister. however, this plan to get back at rhysand was short lived seeing as the bat boys showed up and took her to the night court with them, leaving tamlin in their dust. pissed that he no longer had the upper hand, tamlin snuck into the night court and kidnapped bambi (1,917 word count)

Quickly after Bambi was brought to The Night Court she became the princess of the household. The Bat Boys were utterly obsessed with her, bending over backwards to please her or simply make her smile. But, naturally, when Bambi first arrived at the townhouse she was hesitant. She had been under the impression that Tamlin was her mate. However, she didn't love Tamlin like she thought she should. Something was missing. Turns out, the thing missing was a mating bond.
It took a handful of weeks for Bambi to come out of her shell around the Inner Circle. The first week consisted of her mainly being around Mor. The Bat Boys primal instincts were out of control, so Mor basically banned them to The House of Wind until they got their shit together so they wouldn't petrify Bambi.
It didn't take long for Mor to notice that there was something different about Bambi. From time to time she went quiet, and when she did speak her words lacked her usual sophisticated vocabulary. Then, after she grew more comfortable with Mor, Bambi would grow bolder, and more fussy, than usual during these spells. Mor confided in Madja as to what could explain her behavior, and she described it in medical terminology. But the common name was "little space". So, naturally, she reported this information to The Bat Boys.
Azriel spent 8 hours in the library after Mor informed him about Bambi's coping mechanism, wanting to learn everything he could so he could offer the support and care Bambi needed. After feeling satisfied with his newfound knowledge, he presented it to Rhysand and Cassian. Cassian struggled at first to grasp the concept, but with further education by Rhysand and Azriel, he understood why Bambi age regressed from time to time and wanted to support her the best way he could.
Now, after nearly a year together, The Bat Boys were experts on Bambi. They tended to her every need with unquestionable skill. They knew what she needed when she needed it without having to ask. They moved as one, taking care of her as a team.
But, the three males still had to attend to their responsibilities as High Lord, Commander of the Night Court's Armies, and as Spymaster. So, they couldn't be with Bambi 24/7. When they were busy, they assigned Mor to her. They tried having Amren look after Bambi, but it just resulted in Bambi coming home in tears because Amren made fun of her plushies and kept beating her at checkers (everyone else always let her win). From then on Bambi was always entrusted to Mor's care when they were unavailable.
Today was like any other day. Mor had taken Bambi to walk through the shops. Bambi wasn't feeling little today, but she was still easily distracted and forgetful so Mor accompanied her on her shopping trip. Plus, the entirety of the Inner Circle was overprotective of Bambi. Even Amren, at times. While Mor was finishing up paying for a new bracelet Bambi selected, Bambi wandered down a few stalls to look at pastries. She was about to flag Mor down to buy some when a large hand wrapped around her hand and began to drag her down the busy streets.
Mor searched the shopping stalls for hours in search of Bambi when she couldn't find Bambi's familiar blonde hair among the mass of people. After coming up empty-handed and beginning to panic, she returned to the townhouse to tell The Bat Boys.
"You. Did. What?" Cassian spits.
"How did you manage to lose her?" Rhysand demands, resting his hands on his hips. The moment Mor entered the townhouse without Bambi Azriel's shadows disappeared, already searching for her.
"She is quite small," Amren says from the chair she was in, filing her nails. Cassian scoffs at her lack of urgency.
"You know I would never let anything happen to her," Mor says, growing defensive, "I turned for 5 seconds and she... disappeared." Mor sighed, "I've searched every street in Velaris. She's not in The Night Court," she conceded. Mor looked over at Azriel warily, he was painfully quiet, "Az say something."
Azriel bristled, his hands curling into fists, "Do you have any idea how frightened she'll be when it gets dark outside?" he said lowly, glaring at Mor.
"She wouldn't just wander off like that," Cassian says, "She knows not to go anywhere without us. Besides, everyone in Velaris knows she's our mate. She could ask practically anyone for help and they would bring her to us."
"Then someone must've taken her," Azriel practically growls, his siphons glowing ominously.
"Who would do that? We're on good terms with all the Courts," Mor implored, "Except..." she trails off. Azriel's eyes snap up to Mor's face before he begins to storm towards the front door of the townhouse.
"Azriel wait, we can't do anything rash," Rhysand tries to reason, winnowing in front of him to block his path, "If Tamlin has her we need to be careful, he's unstable and unpredictable. We can't just go blazing into his court without expecting resistance."
"I welcome resistance, Truthteller hasn't gotten dirty in a while," Azriel threatened, his tone deadly.
"I'm in full support of blazing in there. I'll cut his head off before he can do shit," Cassian says, cracking his knuckles.
Rhysand sighs and rubs his forehead in agitation, "It would be nice to not always be the only reasonable one here for once," he mutters to himself before looking back up at The Inner Circle, "Let me try to reach her first, so we can see what we're up against."
"You haven't tried to reach her yet?" Cassian demands, clearly angry that Rhysand hadn't tried to use his daemati abilities yet.
"I've been preoccupied trying to stop you from destroying another court," Rhysand seethes. "Just... give me a moment," Rhysand sighs and sits down on one of the plush sofas in the room. Amren continued to file her nails, glancing up at Rhysand with slight interest. Rhysand focused, his mind reaching out in search of Bambi's. He knew her signature like the back of his hand, usually he could slip into her mind without a bit of effort, but today he couldn't, "She's far away," Rhysand mutters, shifting uncomfortably in the chair as he strains to reach out farther with his mind.
Azriel began to fidget as the minutes passed, the tick of the father clock breaking the silence. Cassian sat on the sofa opposite of Rhysand, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared at The High Lord, trying to decipher if he had found something while Azriel began to pace like a caged animal. Mor remained in the entryway of the living area, biting her nails anxiously as she watched Rhysand.
"There," Rhysand whispers as he finally feels Bambi's familiar energy throughout the sea of minds he had shuffled through. Azriel stops pacing and turns to look at Rhysand, while Cassian perks up in his seat. "I found her," Rhysand says breathily, "Darling, can you hear me?" Rhysand speaks into Bambi's mind, separated by miles. One of the first things Rhysand taught Bambi was how to speak with him telepathically, in case they would need it for times like these. Plus, he enjoyed having access to her mind whenever he wanted.
"Daddy?" she answers, her voice faint and echoey. Rhysand smiles to himself at the sound of her voice. He could barely make out her words due to the distance between them, but that didn't make hearing her any less comforting.
"I need you to tell me where you are. Do you know where you are sweetheart?" Rhysand asks telepathically, his tone gentle. It was obvious to Rhysand that Bambi was in little space, likely due to the fear and anxiety of the situation she was in. Azriel, Cassian, and Mor stared at Rhysand, practically unblinking, as they waited for any new information.
"S'hard," she says, her voice small, echoing in his mind. Rhysand knew she struggled to use her daemati abilities more than usual when in little space. She lost focus easily and struggled to remember what Rhysand had taught her to do. Plus, it was taxing on the mind and could easily exhaust her.
"I know little one, but I need you to try really hard for Daddy so I can come get you," Rhysand said gently, "Now, can you tell me where you are?" A few moments passed and Rhysand waited anxiously.
"Tamlin," is all Bambi managed to slip into Rhysand's mind. That was all the confirmation he needed.
"Sit tight, Daddy's coming for you, okay? Azzy, Cass, and I will be there soon." Rhysand says before cutting off his connection with Bambi, but leaving a window open in his mind so she could reach him if she needed. "She's with Tamlin," Rhysand says firmly, rising from his seat abruptly.
"Is she alright?" Cassian demanded, rising to his feet as well.
"Not entirely. She's little right now, which will make it harder to get her home safely." Rhysand says, "But she knows we're coming. Hopefully, that will bring her comfort."
Across Prythian, Bambi was sitting timidly at Tamlin's dining table as he poured her a glass of wine. Rhysand's voice was bouncing around her mind, "I know little one, but I need you to try really hard for Daddy so I can come find you. Now, can you tell me where you are?"
"Isn't this nice? Us being back together again?" Tamlin asks as he pushes the goblet closer to Bambi. She didn't reach for it, "That's fine faerie wine, you can at least pretend to look grateful." he scoffs, taking a sip from his glass.
Bambi was too focused on using her daemati skills to register Tamlin's words, straining as she tried to respond to Rhysand mentally, "Tamlin," she managed to transfer the singular word into Rhysand's mind. She let out a heavy breath, sinking into her chair once she managed to do so. Tamlin set down his goblet on the table with a thud.
"Did you just tell Rhysand something?" he demands and Bambi looks down at her lap, "Hey!" he snaps, grabbing her chin so she makes eye contact with him, "What did you tell him?" Tamlin growls, "Tell me! What did you tell him!" Tamlin demands and Bambi flinches with a slight whimper.
"I-I told him where I am," she says shakily, looking up at Tamlin anxiously as she waits for his reaction.
"Fuck!" Tamlin bellows, throwing his goblet onto the ground, causing it to shatter. "Why can't one fucking thing ever go to plan!" he shouts, throwing a chair against the wall next. Bambi flinched with each loud noise, fidgeting with the fabric of her dress to try to focus on the smooth silk instead of the danger around her.
"Sit tight, Daddy's coming for you, okay? Azzy, Cass, and I will be there soon." Rhysand's voice echoes in Bambi's mind and she stills, glancing up at Tamlin. Tamlin panted, resting his hands on his hips as he finally stopped throwing things around.
He looked over at Bambi, noticing her gaze on him, "What?" he spits.
"You should run," Bambi says simply, before focusing back on the fabric of her dress. Tamlin bristled slightly from her words.
Moments later Lucien walked into the dining room, his good eye scanning over the mess around the room before landing on Bambi. Lucien sighs at the sight of her, looking over at Tamlin, "Have you gone mad?"
