Original Statement of Purpose in the final semester of college for Personal Reference: With a transparent agenda to celebrate Dalit cultural capital with pride and intimacy through my photographs, I wish my pictures to reflect the life of a Dalit, a first hand perspective of self-compassion. I want my work to escalate the political capital that the Dalit movement carries and demands. My work will be a source of confidence and assertion for the foot soldiers of the Dalit self esteem movement. I want to compassionately observe and document subaltern masculinity with a strong focus on pride and grace. In this process, I want to learn how to compassionately observe the stories of struggle and improve my skills of storytelling. Immediately, I want to commit to photography wholeheartedly and improve my observation and storytelling skills. I might later want to expand beyond photography and explore other media as well in order to tell the stories. Not only medium, I wish to visualize and document things beyond the Dalit world. This is with an anticipation to improve my understanding of the former with newer perspective and a wider understanding. As the process of documentation is innately collaborative with the subjects, to constantly explore ways to curate the documentation for the subjects as primary consumers will be a fundamental quest. My short term goals involve serious and rigorous preparation for photography school applications. My extensive education in engineering has given me a sense of rigor, hard work and commitment. While I walk away from the explicit application of my professional education, I understand and accept the accountability. Yet, photography is my calling. I have been intimately engaged in consumption and creation of visual documentation. Moreover, I personally feel it is my obligation to create high standard visual content for this generation. I also accept the responsibility to ultimately prove myself more fruitful to my community this way, considering the urgent need and vacuum. The previous generations, especially the ones from 70s, have created intensive literature and folk music. They brought volumes to meaning of the term Dalit Cultural Capital. I dearly owe them for creating that for my generation. Now I feel it’s our responsibility to create intimate visual documents and append into Dalit Cultural Capital.
My parents are from rural Vidarbha. My father and his brothers migrated to Aurangabad for education. His teaching job closely exposed me to the rural life in a Village in Jalana District, while I was growing up as a Zilha Parishad School student. I feel too lucky to have grown up in a Maharwada (a rural dalit basti) as a child, in a humble and intimate community setting. Later in High School, I was put in a leading Brahmin Major School in Aurangabad, political and economic center of Marathawada region. That experience has added extra dimensions to my empathy and understanding. Later, in IIT, the wide variety of culture, class, caste and vibrancy helped me grow as an observant person very extensively. My prolonged personal experiences with my mother’s schizophrenia,my father’s depression and my own during my undergraduate years along with a slack in my academic pace, pushed me to come out with best learnings in strength and perseverance.
I desire to make a portfolio that would help me get closer to an admit in a reputed photography school such as International Center of Photography. I need to create my application and have a visual appeal that is impossible to ignore. I find that extremely important to create enough boldness in both my personal and public space. It’s not only going to help me sharpen my critical thinking and expose me to the cutting edge flows in photojournalism, but I believe is also going to earn me a heavy social capital. And I plan to exploit the social capital and privilege that it brings for my subjects and to the discipline. Ultimately, to further underline and draw attention and importance to my subjects and my community.
